Fall Program 2020

Hello Dear Ones, To say we are living in interesting times right now would be an understatement. These times are reminiscent of the times that many of our great grandparents or grandparents lived through. I speak to the Spanish Flu Pandemic, Women's Right to vote marches, Social injustices, world unrest and labor shortages. This August is the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which granted women in the United States of America, the right to vote. Did you know, the passage of this amendment and human rights did not come about easily? Women of all colors, creeds, religions and sexual orientations fought for this amendment. Additionally, and interestingly, had women not fought and marched for equality including their right to vote, men who were non-property owners would not have been granted the right to vote. That’s right, before the 19th amendment men who did not own property couldn’t vote which, at the time, represented almost 6 million men or votes. While the 19th Amendment gave “some” women the right to vote ALL women did not receive that right until the 1960’s. It took women like Fannie Lou Hamer, Carolyn Katzenstei, Ida B. Wells, Harriet Forten Purvis, Sojourner Truth, Mary Church Terrell, Maud Nathan, Mary Fels, Ella Baker, Diane Nash and so many more to continue the fight for voting rights for all. These continued efforts helped address the racial inequality that prevented African, Asian and Native Americans from voting, regardless of sex, culminating in the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which prevented states from imposing discriminatory restrictions on who could vote. During these interesting times we are reminded that Girl Scouting teaches and instills in us that courage, confidence, and character is something found outside your comfort zone. Additionally, scouting teaches us, that maintaining neutrality or closing your eyes to injustices, does not influence change. True change, true

courage is found when you use your voice. Susan B. Anthony was asked during the suffragettes' peak in 1900 if women would be given the right to vote in her lifetime, she replied, “It will come, but I shall not see it…It is inevitable. We can no more deny forever the right of self-government to one-half of our people… but come it will, and I believe within a generation.” THIS is the time, 100 years later, we all stand together using our voice to ensure that all the people are truly ALL THE PEOPLE. In this pivotal time in history, “Deeds not Words,” the motto of the suffragette movement, is even more poignant than ever. We are called upon to ensure our girls are well versed in civic action. That we as adults model civic participation. Are you, are we, willing to stand for change and be a part of this history of strong women? Register, speak up, speak out and vote! In this Fall edition of Food for Thought, you will see how this Council, our volunteers, and girls have pivoted. How "Deeds not Words" allowed us to quickly address needs, how change, although difficult, was necessary. We have introduced new ways of participating in and promoting our programs which have influenced new experiences. Additionally, the opportunities to uplift volunteers who have gone above and beyond this past year have increased. Although recruitment opportunities for Girl Scouting have always been present, diverse Girl Scouting MUST continue and that means bringing in new girls, new volunteers, and new leadership from all backgrounds, to support our already outstanding membership base. This will not only enhance our current membership, but it will allow us to embrace and support our returning members as we move this mission forward. "Girl Scouting rises within you and inspires you to put forth your best." - Girl Scouts Founder, Juliette Gordon Low. Change requires your best effort. I ask you if not now, when?

Yours in Girl Scouting now and always, Elizabeth “ E” Locke-Thomas Chief of Mission Delivery

Welcome Girl Scout families to a brand new year of scouting, entrepreneurial program and success! As we enter the 2020 Fall Program, I know there is uncertainty regarding what the world and everyday life will look like from month to month. But fortunately, as Girl Scouts, we are flexible and prepared to handle any situation that comes our way with confidence and grace. The structure of the Fall Program has not been impacted and the full range of opportunities are still available. M2 Media Group is GSSGC’s new Fall Program vendor providing magazines in addition to their intuitive and supportive online sales system. While the system we use to participate in the Fall Program has changed, all of the yummy nuts and chocolate products from Ashdon Farms will still be available! As a friends and family program with a strong online component, girls can participate and reach their goals as they always have and by incorporating some easy social distancing procedures such as contactless payments and delivery, keep themselves and their customers safe while still reaching their goals! Together we will stay strong and focused to continue our mission to better ourselves and the world.

A Message from your CEO The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is changing how we live, work, and serve our girls. Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio Council is making important decisions in order to continue offering services, because our girls need us more than ever before. They are growing up in a time like no other — in fear, uncertainty, and isolation. Their generation is being shaped in ways we have never seen, but we do know that we can help and make a difference in their lives. By working together, and remaining highly focused on the needs of our girls, we can promise they will rise and become women of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. We work for today’s girls and for future generations. This is our duty and responsibility. Girl Scouts is the best positioned and equipped nonprofit to make sure we do not lose this generation of girls. Girl Scouts is that important. Through our virtual programmatic offerings, Girl Scouts is continuing to provide quality experiences for our girls. While we are not reopening Council offices until January 5, 2021, all departments are fully functional and working remotely to assist in all of your Girl Scouting needs. Members can chat with our Customer Care Specialists in real time via the chat app found on the Contact Us page of GSSGC’s website. To connect with a Customer Care Specialist by phone, dial the main number, (909) 307-6555, and at any point during the recording dial Ext. 5002. No matter what the future brings, what is clear is that there are girls that need us—girls that need Girl Scouts. Together, we will stand firm and meet the challenges before us. After all, we are Girl Scouts.

Yours in Girl Scouting,

Cynthia H. Breunig President and CEO

Girl Scouts Stands Against Racism and Pledges to Work for a Just Society for All At Girl Scouts of the USA, we build girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. In this moment of suffering in our nation, Girl Scouts commits to taking action to support Black girls, their families and their communities. We want to reiterate to all girls, volunteers, alums, supporters, families and staff that we do not tolerate racial injustice and we know that Black Lives Matter. We commit to doing all we can, using our collective power, to help create the change in our communities that is long overdue. We will do our part to dismantle systemic racism. We recognize that this is far from easy or fast work, but we are Girl Scouts—we believe in sisterhood, justice and fairness—so we are in it for the long haul. We take action when we see a need and we live by our Girl Scout Law, which demands we seek racial equity for everyone. We teach girls to lead by example, and to that end, we are committed to doing the difficult work to become an anti-racist organization. We are making an initial financial investment to partner with experts in the areas of race, inclusion and equity, with a focus on girls and women. This will support the following actions we will take at all levels of our national organization: Leadership. Girl Scouts of the USA is forming a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Taskforce at the national board level to help create an organization that works for all girls, including by ensuring that Black, Indigenous, Latina, and all girls of color feel supported, welcomed and treated with dignity and respect. In addition, we will create a DEI/Racial Justice Steering Committee made up of national staff and Girl Scout council CEOs to help guide and prioritize our work. Staff. This change starts from within, so Girl Scouts commits to strengthening hiring practices that help us reflect the communities we serve. We will also support and train all Girl Scout staff in the areas of diversity, equity and inclusion and pursue in earnest the ongoing work of recognizing and challenging our own biases and internalized racism. Volunteers. The strength of our organization rests among our more than 700,000 dedicated volunteers. We will provide additional resources, training and support to ensure these champions of girls are equipped to serve all girls equitably. Most importantly, Girls. All girls’ voices must be heard. We will provide all girls a place where they feel heard and where they have the resources and support they need to raise their voices and change their corner of the world.

We are asking for all Girl Scouts—girls, volunteers, alums, supporters, families, staff, and our suppliers and service providers—to commit to taking action to make the world a more equitable place. We have a lot of work to do—join us.

Juliettes The Girl Scout Fall Program and all Entrepreneurial programs are meant to be done as a team/troop activity. As such GSSGC will no longer be offering a separate, stand alone, Juliette Entrepreneurial opportunity. Rather we urge our Juliettes to join up or form troops. With new virtual troop opportunities available, Juliettes from all over GSSGC's 27,000 square miles can come together to meet and do programming together, enjoy socializing with other Girl Scouts and experience the troop/group opportunities. Contact customercare@gssgc.org for help and more information about forming troops.

Fill this form out completely and then click the submit button at the bottom of the form and it will email directly to Council. A separate request must be made for each girl. You will need to have all cookie/nutty card numbers or Troop Loot numbers for this.

WHAT CAN I BANK MY VARIOUS TYPES OF DOUGH/LOOT FOR?

1

Juliette Credits can be used to pay for camp, travel, programming, or just about any Girl Scout related program or GSSGC Shop expenditures. Juliette Credits are only valid for 1 year from the date of issue and are not bankable.

QUICK REMINDER - To access banked dough or Juliette Credits you must be a registered Girl Scout. Don't forget to renew for the 2020-2021 season.

PLEASE NOTE that due to the closures from COVID-19, the expiration dates on all Dough/Loot and Juliette Credits issued at Fall 2018 and Cookies 2019 will be extended based on the amount of time closures are in effect.

The Girl Scout experience is in part about teaching girls important life skills. One of these skills is managing expenditures. With troop leadership guidance, girls will learn key money skills that will serve them throughout their lives. Part of that management is having a plan or a budget. Another part is keeping records of receipts. Receipts are especially important for documenting any use of a debit card. The girls should be included in the process of establishing goals and budgets. By keeping appropriate records, following the budget and preparing regular reports, managing the bank account will be easier and the girls will learn proper financial management.

Tips for involving girls & families in managing troop finances: »  There is no individual accounting of troop money, which means that every girl in the troop participates equally in all troop activities even if some girls sold more cookies than others did. »  Troop activities are powered by proceeds earned through Council-sponsored product program activities (such as the Girl Scout Entrepreneurial Program), Council approved money-earning activities and any dues your troop may charge. »  The co-leader/troop treasurer should give a regular accounting of how much money the troop has in its account and how much was spent or added. To help prepare girls to make these important financial decisions, check out the Financial Literacy badges for all age levels. Contact customercare@gssgc.org to receive a list of all the Financial Literacy Badges.

New this Year! Starting in October, Troop Co-Leaders will be able to access and use the Troop Finance Tab through the Volunteer Toolkit year-round! This will give troops the opportunity to utilize the Finance Tab as a tool for better and easier tracking of troop funds, throughout the membership year.

Do you have a passion for Girl Scouts and want to help the GSSGC community grow?

ATTENTION Virtual Gurus!

In this new day and age of virtual activity and engagement, we are looking for Adult Volunteers interested in assisting in any of the following ways: ⇨ Serve as a Virtual Troop Meeting Mentor for new troops or those that currently feel uncomfortable running virtual troop meetings. ⇨ Host Virtual Recruitments, inviting new girl members to join, experience what Girl Scouts has to offer and welcome potential new Troop Co-Leaders. ⇨ Co-Lead a Virtual Girl Scout Troop, giving girls the opportunity to participate in Girl Scouts virtually when there are no troops available in their area or they prefer a virtual experience. ⇨ Spread the Word – sharing information online about upcoming recruitments and events by posting flyers and in your local community groups and or PTO/PTA’s. Are you interested in becoming a GSSGC Virtual Guru? Please let us know and we will contact you shortly to provide details, orientation and next steps: https://bit.ly/gssgcvg

Questions? Would you like more information? Please contact customercare@gssgc.org.

Tips for a Successful Virtual Troop Meeting

You may have girls in your troop or group who are facing unique issues due to living in remote areas without internet access, or with limited access to technology, or other economic circumstances. Make certain you are able to accommodate and include all girls, regardless of their issues, before moving forward with plans to go virtual. If you run into a roadblock, please contact customercare@gssgc.org and Troop Support will be more than happy to assist.

Ensure that your troop utilizes a video conferencing service that is accessible on all types of devices. For example, you may need to stay away from Face Time because not everyone has an Apple brand phone (Face Time is only available on IOS). Also, the video program should work the same on a cell phone as it does on a laptop or tablet considering that girls may or may not have the same devices.

You may wish to prepare some fun and respectful protocols for girls to agree upon for their virtual meeting and this is encouraged. For example, to speak in turn and not speak over each other. Think through your meeting and make some notes on the agenda with what you aim to accomplish during the time. A virtual meeting may flow differently than an in-person meeting.

Consider if your girls would like to dress a certain way to encourage and strengthen their sense of belonging. Some troops wear uniforms to their meetings and others may not. You may want to suggest having girls wear their vests for the virtual meeting to reinforce their camaraderie or have the girls vote on how they would like to show their Girl Scout pride when meeting online.

Consider the grade level and age groups of the girls when planning virtual meetings. Be mindful of the meeting time(s) that are set or any other factors that may differentiate the context of a virtual meeting between younger and older girls.

Make sure to plan a closing for the meeting, where you have the opportunity to wrap up the activities and discuss future meetings. Take this opportunity to gauge how the girls are enjoying the meetings. The brief closing should take about 5 minutes.

Invite your friends to join Girl Scouts! In these challenging times, the sisterhood of Girl Scouts is needed more than ever! Girl Scouts makes a difference in girls' lives. Now, imagine if even more girls had the chance to experience this bond and tackle challenges because they know they have Girl Scout sisters to cheer them on and lift them up. We encourage our girls to Invite-a-Friend! Girls who participate by inviting their friends to join GSSGC will have the chance to share the excitement of Girl Scouts with their friends, as well as receive a free patch! Not only that, for a limited time, Council will pay the $25 membership fee for the new girl joining!

Follow these three steps to Invite-a-Friend! 1 Host a Virtual "Invite-a-Friend" recruitment meeting for your troop or Service Unit area. 2 Invite the friends to join Girl Scouts: visit https://www.gssgc.org/en/about-girl-scouts/join.html, text the word “Join” to 59618, or call (909)307-6555. 3 Have the new friends select “Request Aid” on the payment screen. They will be sent a link to a form where they can let us know they have been invited and their membership fee will be covered. Once they’ve joined, troop leaders must submit this form for girls to receive their free patch: bit.ly/GSSGCIAF

Frequently Asked Questions: What are the benefits of having a larger troop? » More girls will expand friendships and confidence for everyone. » More girls get an opportunity to experience cooperative learning. » Your troop environment can be more diverse and inclusive. » You can ask more adults to help with troop activities and share the responsibilities. What if my troop is full? If your troop is full, a new family can look for other options by searching for troops in the Opportunity Catalog. New girls can also participate as a Juliette. How can I add new girls to my troop without posting my troop on the Girl Scout website? While we strongly encourage you to display your troop in our Opportunity Catalog, you can tell the girl and her family to select “Unsure” for the troop during the registration process and then list the troop number or leader name in the pop-up window.

Rules: » Deadline: November 30, 2020 » Joining girls must be new to Girl Scouts and register for the 2020-2021 Girl Scout Membership Year. » Co-Leaders must be registered Girl Scout members and have a current background check on file for the 2020-2021 Girl Scout Membership Year.

Programs in a Box

Troops and girls can check out or buy Programs in a Box to help them work on new and current badges or have some Girl Scout fun. Various prices: $10 to $60 per girl. Remember meeting outlines can also be found on the VTK (Volunteer Toolkit) for free. Each box will: ♥ Outline the what, why, and how to implement the program. ♥ Offer preplanned virtual “troop meeting(s)” either using the items in the box or those you purchase on your own. These can be translated to in-person meetings. ♥ A supply list including a shopping list for common household supplies like scissors, glue, pencils, and markers. ♥ Depending on box chosen it will also include supplies

Four types of boxes to choose from:

1

Download Box offers meeting plans and shopping list

3

2

Borrow Box offers a shopping list for all non-renewable resources (including common household supplies) and includes the opportunity to borrow hard to get or expensive items such as a telescope or Goldiblox.

Purchase Box offers most items needed to complete the topic (typically a badge). Common household supplies such as scissors, glue, markers, crayons, pencils and paper would be supplied on your own. Note: If the topic is a badge; it may include instructions for kids to complete portions of badges, that cannot be done virtually, with their family (such as hosting a star party).

Girl Scout Program Clubs Expand any girls’ Girl Scout experience. Join our specialty clubs for girls to have a chance to expand her interest or to explore new activities. Clubs are Girl Scout level specific for the most part. This means although Brownies and Cadettes are both listed; they will not be together. Clubs are 6 months, meeting weekly for about an hour each week. Clubs offer girls a chance to grow their communication skills, expand their social circle, rise above with leadership opportunities and set a firm foundation in good health habits and self-care techniques.

Current themes are: Service Learning: Get together with like-minded girls who are also interested in developing civic engagement and community problem-solving skills. Each meeting will actively involve girls in talking about problems in their community they would like to address. Discovering the root of an issue and creating a lasting effect for good in their local area. For Grades 6-12 Entrepreneurship: Girl Scouts has the largest girl-led business in the world (the Girl Scout Cookie Program). This club takes that experience and goes one-step further. In this club you will work as a group with business professionals to learn goal setting, decision-making, money management, business ethics and people skills. The girls will start work in the fall to develop their plan for a business idea they have, or they may choose to develop their plan for their most successful troop cookie sale yet. Choose the pathway within this club that is right for you. For Grades 2-12 Daisy Club: Juliette Lowe, better known as Daisy by her friends, founded Girl Scouts over 100 years ago to create a place for girls to explore and discover the best of who they could be. In this program designed for Daisy Girl Scouts, girls will learn about our founder, what it means to be a Girl Scout and take action to apply it to their daily life. This club will allow girls to get to know their sister Girl Scouts through interactive sessions designed to explore Girl Scouts and earn badges. Grades K-1

Career Exploration: What do you want to be when you grow up? Attend this club to start on a self-discovery adventure. Focus is on exploring career options, becoming financially fluent and meeting career professionals through Zoom. For Grades 6-12

Girl Scout Life: For over 100 years, Girl Scouts has been creating safe all girls spaces for Girl Scouts to grow and change the world. Dive deep into the words of the promise and law. Discover what it means to you and how to apply it to your everyday life. Learn about forming and maintaining healthy relationships, while as a group you identify and solve problems in your local community. For Grades 2-12

Outdoors & STEM: Can’t get outside together yet, but start your adventure with learning about the environment and earth concerns. Do science experiments to understand what is happening to our planet and as a group discover ways we can make everyday Earth Day! For Grades 2-5

Clubs start in October Register for a club now, space will be limited

This summer we had to stay away from each other in person, but that did not stop us from getting together virtually!

Camp Anywhere took the internet by storm and offered more than 100 opportunities for Girl Scouts to get together while keeping our distance. We offered it all: from 5-day camps to kits to do on your own. Girls made new friends attending 1, 3, 5 and longer programs. We had something for everyone. We served about 300 girls from 23 states spanning all four time zones. This was a new experiment for all of us and we are happy to say it was a success. But don’t take our word for it.

Here is what our campers and their families had to say:

What did you like most about her camp experience? ♥“That it gave her time to interact with others and not just her family. It was a nice break and a bit of normal in this crazy time.” ♥“She was excited to log on. She felt heard and valued and learned a lot of stuff.” ♥“Activities were fun and the camp counselors were really nice”

What would you tell others about the camp you attended? ♥“I would tell them to sign up because the camps are fun.” ♥“It’s really fun and you learn all about space and even get to make a rover!” ♥“I could not believe she was so excited to attend a VIRTUAL camp for 3 whole hours a day, but she loved it so much - eager to sign on each day, LOVED all the activities, and all the fun banter (20 questions, riddles, scavenger hunts, and dancing). She immediately asked if she could attend another camp.”

What did we learn?

As you can imagine not everything went right all the time. We were making adjustments every day! From how we communicated, what we communicated, what types of activities lend themselves to a virtual experience and which type of activities require way more help from an adult than we thought.

♥ We were so lucky to have such a wonderful rst group who were willing to roll with the changes and rise to the challenge as we all learned this new method.

♥ We were so lucky to have girls and adults willing to provide timely, on the spot feedback that allowed us to adjust immediately to provide a better girl experience.

♥ We are looking for additional feedback, as Virtual is HERE to stay! So far, for next year we have planned clubs (weekly meetings for

6 months on one theme), events (1-1.5 hour single theme experiences), series (multi-session 1-1.5 hour around a single theme experience), Facebook Lives (drop in live events throughout the month based on a monthly theme). However, things keep changing and we want feedback from you - Please complete the short 10 question Virtual Going Forward Survey to let us know what you think of these ideas and what else you know: https://bit.ly/VirtualForward

ONLINE TRAINING

Online training is an easy, convenient way to learn about Girl Scouts and it’s available for any registered member or volunteer. On the main website, in the upper left, you’ll see MyGS, there will be a drop down for Volunteer Toolkit. Or you can use the “sign in” underneath the “shop” link. Enter your username (Girl Scout email) and password. If you don’t remember your password, send an email to customercare@gssgc.org requesting your password be reset. Once you’re logged in, select gsLearn on the right side of the page. When your dashboard opens up, click on “content library”, then “courses”. HERE YOU’LL SEE: ☙ Higher awards – Bronze, Silver & Gold Award training ☙ Delegate Training

☙ Safety Activity Checkpoints & Activity Approval ☙ Courses offered by GSUSA

THIS IS ALSO WHERE NEW LEADERS WILL FIND THE BASIC 3: ☙ Leader Orientation

☙ Troop Financial Management ☙ GSUSA Successful Leader Learning Series (replaces GS101)

COMING THIS YEAR:

Look for the following trainings to enhance your volunteer experience with Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio: ☙ Diversity & Inclusion ☙ First Aid/CPR Blended Certification ☙ Driver Safety ☙ Extended Trip Training ☙ Extended Trip Training – Bridging Juniors

☙ Money Earning – Ideas, Purpose & Process ☙ Grade Level Training ☙ Volunteer Essentials – How to Use ☙ Ceremonies & Traditions ☙ Recognitions & Nominations

Did you know you have the ability to download and attach external certificates to your learner profile – thinking of your First Aid/CPR certification? Also, in the coming membership year, past trainings will be uploaded into your record so we can trace all the amazing things you’ve learned to better serve our girls. Once you’ve logged in to gsLearn, you can return any time to finish a course you’ve started or view free courses in the course library. Use Google Chrome as your browser. If using an iphone or other Apple device, download Google Chrome rather than using Safari for best results.

TRAIN THE TRAINER Are you passionate about the outdoors or leadership development? Do you have tips and tricks from years of Girl Scouting that you would like to share with other leaders? If this sounds like you – and you’re ready for a new challenge with Girl Scouts – consider becoming a trainer. Trainers collaborate with staff and other trainers to develop and deliver trainings that support the next generation of leaders and adult volunteers who help build girls of courage, confidence and character. As a volunteer organization, we are in need of trainers to help provide the most accurate information to new volunteers taking on the leadership role, current volunteers wanting more experience and older girls wanting to learn additional leadership skills. We also need volunteers willing to assist our council in making sure we are keeping our trainings current and relevant to the needs of our membership. If you love Girl Scouting, this is a great way to volunteer. Trainers are needed in all areas of the Council (especially more rural areas) to bring training closer to each Girl Scout service unit. Trainers are adults who work effectively with other adults and/or older girls; serve as role models for adult volunteers; are dedicated to and support the principles of Girl Scouting; like a flexible Girl Scout commitment; are responsible, dependable and follow through on their commitments. If you would like to become a Council trainer register for this session of Training for Trainers. Fill out this interest form at https://girlscoutsgssgc.wufoo.com/forms/wwyef1u1pa5nh1/ or email cchapman@gssgc.org for more information.

TRAINING COSTS While San Gorgonio has a lot of our trainings available online, we’ll never stop offering live trainings, whether it be in-person or live virtual classes. We feel that the opportunity to have face-to-face training and the ability to network with like-minded volunteers can never be completely replaced. We also value the time of our staff and our exceptional volunteer training team. Scheduling, organizing, confirming and preparing for in-person classes takes time for both the Council staff and the volunteer trainer. Imagine how disappointing it is to have a class with 15-18 participants registered and only 4-5 show up. This is happening more and more frequently. We understand that life happens and sometimes interferes with our best laid plans, but with proper notification, prior to the day of the class, your registration can be transferred to another class at a more convenient date. Effective October 1, 2020, for live in-person or virtual classes where a participant chooses to “not show up”, the troop account will be swept (ACH withdrawal) by Council for each absent person in the amount of $5.00 per person.

RECOGNITIONS program Remember, nominations submitted beginning August 15th are for the 2020 Membership Year – covering services provided from October 1, 2019 through September 30, 2020. Any mention of current (Membership Year 2021) services will be discarded and the nomination marked null and void. Make sure that if you nominate a recipient, part of your responsibility is to inform those you’ve asked to show support of the nomination. Remind them that they need to follow up and submit their own supporting nomination for the package to be complete. Again, so many worthy nominees won’t be recognized this year due to a lack of supporting nominations. Your local recognition volunteers will also be following up with emails. However, nothing beats that personal touch and a reminder of why the nominee is such a fabulous volunteer!

Awards presented in the Spring

We realize that we’ve yet to recognize our 2018/19 recipients, never fear our Council is working diligently to create a ceremony that will celebrate all the astounding people in our organization and the exceptional work they’ve done. In the meantime, we need to look at the epic year we just had – 2019/20. And it has been epic. The year started out like any other – Fabulous! Fall sale, fall rewards, membership drives and recruitment. Celebrations and battles between knights to kick off Cookies & recognize top fall sellers. Efficient Mega Drop and a door busting cookie sale. And then…(cue dun dun duuuun music) life took a left turn. But like great sister Girl Scouts before us, we rallied. Everyone has stepped out of their comfort zone and put on their creative thinking caps to keep our members engaged and connected. Let’s recognize those amazing people who ran a fantastic program when life was swimming along, and let’s celebrate those out-of-the-box thinkers who haven’t let a little social distancing, never-know-what’s-coming-next virus slow them down.

HIGHE R AWAR DS

10 YEAR, GRADUATING SENIOR, SILVER & GOLD

There’s change in the wind. We’ve heard you and are making a change. Traditionally, the “wufoo” that asks you to submit your name if you’re a Graduating Senior, a 10-Year girl member of Girl Scouts, and may also be receiving your Silver or Gold Award has been published on March 1st and is open for 31 days. For several years we’ve heard: “I never received the link”, “I missed the deadline”, “Where was that published?”, “I didn’t know I had to fill something out”. It saddens us that a deserving girl is not recognized for her accomplishment. So, wait for it…

We are now going to have the link open for a much longer period. The link will open on December 1st of each year and will stay open until April 30th. That’s 5 WHOLE months. Council will push the link on social media, email the information to service units, leaders of older girl troops and even send email reminders to members that are registered 9th-12th graders.

So, heads up, if you have girls in your troop or members of your family that are entering 9th through 12th grade, mark it on your calendar – December 1st. If you don’t come across the link, reach out to customercare@gssgc.org and they’ll take care of you.

2020 GOLD AWARD RECIPIENTS Oasis P. – Troop 610

Lollipop Moments With her school experiencing recent suicide and suicide attempts, Oasis want to make sure it didn’t continue happening. Working in partnership with the Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) club on campus, she organized and hosted a wellness fair to promote the resources available to assist students and their families who are struggling with mental health issues. She also created and installed “Wellness Walls” at her high school and the local recreation center. These walls showcase information on mental health organizations, facts, tips and tricks for coping with stress. The information provided is both local and county-wide. The school counselors and psychologist will keep the school wall up to date and the Teen Advisory Board, which has Mental Health Awareness as their mission focus, will maintain the wall at the center.

Kira S. – Troop 203

PAWS – Promotion of Animal Welfare Support Working with Redlands Family Services (RFS), a local social service agency, Kira developed a program to collect and distribute pet supplies to the low income population. Establishing an Animal Service Club on her school campus, she held a drive and set up a “Pet Pantry” at RFS. When low income families come in for items from the food pantry, they can now visit the “pet pantry” and also pick up supplies for their pet. Without access to these supplies, these animals may have been abandoned or dropped off at an already overcrowded shelter. The Animal Service Club will continue periodic drives to restock the pantry and excess items obtained are donated to the Redlands Humane Society and YAPS (Yucaipa Animal Placement Society).

Carson S. – Troop 970 Teacher Swap Carson noticed that at the beginning of the school year many of the new teachers didn’t have a lot of “extra” items in their classrooms. After doing a bit of research, she realized that when a teacher retires, they either throw their items away or they search for someone who could use the items; same thing happens when teachers change grade levels. Realizing that experienced teachers and new teachers needed to form a mutually beneficial connection, Carson organized and set up a “Teacher Swap” store. Collecting items from experienced teachers, she worked with her fellow classmates in the Special Day Class (SDC) where they learned real-life skills like sorting and classifying material. The students also acted as “retail clerks” the day of the swap. All skills that will benefit them in future employment. The project gained such traction that a neighboring school district is already working on hosting their own “Teacher Swap” hosted by their SDC students.

Hanna B. – Troop 593

Art for Awareness Addressing the lack of conversation about mental health and offering ways to release the frustrations, Hanna offered an opportunity for those struggling to use art as a medium to educate the community. Hosting an art show in conjunction with her local Teen Advisory Board, she had multiple artists present their work in a variety of mediums to the public. The best outcome of her project is when she had a friend who has attempted suicide, at first refuse to submit a piece, then said she would, but it would be anonymous, to submitted her poem with her name attached to it. This young lady said afterwards that it was freeing to share her story and she felt less alone. The Grand Terrace Rec Center in partnership with the Teen Advisory Board will hold this event annually with the on-site art teacher assisting.

2020 GOLD AWARD RECIPIENTS Ella W. – Troop 343 In Case of Emergency… Working with the Ronald McDonald House (RMH) is always a worthwhile endeavor, serving the families of those in crisis at a local hospital or undergoing long-term treatment, can be very rewarding. Ella noticed that while her local RMH had an evacuation plan posted for families in residence, when she asked about supplies on hand in the event of a disaster, she found out that the facility did not have the staff time or resources to put that in place. Compiling a list of necessary supplies while working with the facility manager, Ella was able to secure the necessary items to aid families in a time of emergency. Along with long-term supplies and a schedule of expiration replacements, she created a video explaining emergency protocols and safety procedures that all incoming families are required to view. Now families are prepared in the event an emergency takes place and can take comfort and have one less stressor that their immediate needs will be addressed.

Jordan M. - Troop 2081 Geocaching at Hidden Valley Nature Center Finding a fun way to educate the Girl Scout community and others about the safe way to hike and commune with nature, Jordan mapped out and installed a Geocache course and offered classes on Geocaching including caches that were only open to those who participated in the class. Jordan has posted her caches on a popular Geocaching website where anyone with interest or who Geocaches as a hobby can go back to nature, enjoy the Hidden Valley Nature Center and discover her cache locations. Jordan’s project has grown the Geocache community by teaching Girl and Boy Scout groups, youth organizations and the community through her 5-step program all about this sporting adventure.

Katrina L. – Troop 880 Pg-asa Sa Mga Bata (Hope for Kids) Identifying a gap in access to STEM activities, Katrina, working with her local library, built an accessible box with STEM activities and supplies for an audience of 7-12 year olds. Holding a workshop for youth attendees, they participated in lessons about gravity, physics, problem solving and much more. After her first run of workshops, the library staff continued to hold the workshop and upon her return for a check-in, Katrina found that there were even more students in attendance and some had brought their parents along so they could recreate the designs at home.

Jessie V. – Troop 710

Painting for Polly Having a sister Girl Scout with a rare auto-immune disease and seeing her struggle day to day was difficult for Jessie. The disease is not a visible ailment and people are not always the kindest. Jessie wanted to change that. Working with the Helendale Community Service District (CSD) and local artists, she hosted a “Painting for Polly” evening to educate the community and enlist their support for her friend. Experts presented information about the disease, brochures were provided and her family even spoke of the challenges they face day to day. By educating the community, the hope is that this disease will find more support and research can continue to find a cure. With over 50 people in attendance and positive feedback provided by social media, the family has found that more people are understanding of the disease and are supportive of efforts to spearhead additional research. The CSD will be holding the “Painting for Polly” event annually and brochures are continuously available at the center.

2020 GOLD AWARD RECIPIENTS Nicole V. – Troop 436 Save the Wilderness Regularly participating in lakeside clean-ups, Nicole noticed the amount of discarded fishing line was causing a real hazard not just to the wildlife, but to visitors as well. People visiting the lake often became tangled in the dropped lines and a few stuck with the fishing hooks still attached. Nicole, working with the park and other community partners, designed and installed 9 fishing line and hook recycling bins around two lakes and at the fish cleaning stations. Permanent signs were installed around the park educating people on the new recycling bins, their purpose and how they can contribute to the well-being of the environment. After just a short period, while emptying the bins Nicole noticed that they were ¾ full of fishing debris, hardly any trash and that the lakeshore seemed to be cleaner. The debris will be collected and sent to a recycling center in Iowa where it will be used to make artificial reefs.

Tess B. – Troop 355 The Great Outdoors Tess felt that her school and the students bordering the Mojave forest could benefit from an outside classroom. Serving the 6th grade science students, she constructed an outdoor classroom that included tables, benches, measurement instruments for energy and rocket projects; bringing the forest to the students, footprints of local animals were created to educate them on preservation and safety. A gardening area was also created to teach the students the process of photosynthesis and pollination/cross-pollination of plants. Her efforts have resulted in a 15% increase of students interest in learning and being in the out-of-doors. The school’s Board of Directors, the parent group and the teachers are very excited to have their own custom outdoor classroom.

Emily B. – Troop 504 Senior Technology Training Noticing the Senior Citizens in her church having difficulty using the iPads during church services, Emily wanted to restore their pride and confidence by providing technology instruction. Holding classes for the seniors, Emily taught a variety of topics, including using the internet, shopping, how to avoid scams, both online and by phone; learning how to FaceTime with their families, keeping abreast of church happenings through social media and evening managing their finances. She taught classes on email, photography, managing their health, using applications to play puzzle and logic games, which have proven to combat dementia and are a fun way to practice technology skills. Twenty one seniors attended and the pre/post questionnaire determined that all the seniors felt more knowledgeable, they used 150% more technology and it’s applications than before and their level of comfort rose from 5.6 to an average of 7.6. The church now offers “Tech Time” a weekly class that allows the seniors to use church technology. The previous class take turns hosting the class and teaching the newcomers.

Samantha N. – Troop 341 The Kinder-GARDEN Working with the school district and the kindergarten teachers of her former elementary school, Samantha created a permanent outdoor garden where the students, in addition to learning about plants and water conservation, this largely low-income school provided the opportunity for students to learn how they can contribute to their own health by growing, nurturing and harvesting healthy produce of their own. Booklets have been provided that supplement the kinder curriculum and seedlings and information packets are sent home with the students to exercise their new found skills to care for and harvest their own produce at home.

Everyone that loves camp (and who doesn’t?) was devastated by the need to cancel all summer camp programs due to the coronavirus pandemic. Just because our magnificent, magical Skyland Ranch was closed to camping doesn’t mean that exciting things haven’t been happening. You will see from the report on the facing page that many improvements have been completed or are in the works while campers were gone. We hope you will be inspired by the work that’s being done to support Skyland Ranch with a donation. Making necessary improvements is an expensive proposition, but the rewards for you and our girls are immense. And as “stay at home” orders are rescinded, the craving for outdoor experiences will be greater than ever. Please go to www.gssgc.org/donateform and make a gift supporting Skyland Ranch today! Thank you.

To discuss giving opportunities with our Development Ofcer, email Chuck MacKinnon at cmackinnon@gssgc.org or give him a call at 310-567-9318.

Latest Updates at Campsites:

Skyland Ranch: Sleeping Porches have been elevated to a new level of comfort and protection. New hard roofs provide better three-season protection. Screens and roll down window flaps are in the works.

Wishaven Cabins have undergone a complete renovation, with new siding, double-pane windows, metal doors and jams, radiant heat panels and lighting. A new accessible parking space and ramp have been added. Next project: new restroom/shower facility.

Duncan Lodge Solar Array – Applied Medical provided full funding for the installation of an expandable solar array that will offset the cost of electric usage on all of Skyland. We are walking our talk in moving to renewable energy. Duncan Lodge Landscaping Phase 1 A precast concrete split rail fence was installed to define and protect a buffer area around the Lodge. Smokey, aka Leslee Temple, created a planting design and list of drought tolerant plants to use. Planting is scheduled for Spring 2021; watch for opportunities to participate in this project. NRCS Fuel Management completed a multi-year project to manage the brush and fuels density on camp and included a fuels break that will help protect camp from potential fire hazards.

Directional Signs New durable metal driving and walking directional signs have been produced and installed thanks to Troop 2400. Among plans for the near future, as funding becomes available, is the conversion of the lower level of the Silver Barn into an Environmental Learning Lab that will house multiple teaching kiosks funded by U.S. Bank. We look forward to the day everyone can come back to camp. Until then you can track all the updates at camp at: https://www.skylandranchcamp.org/blog

Camp WiWoCa: Lodge – Gone are the days of dim lighting and the loud buzz of old fluorescent. New LED lights have been installed and a fresh coat of paint applied throughout the building.

New Lower Restroom Roof will ensure the longevity of this building for many more years.

Camp Azalea Trails: Though the public cannot access camp due to road damage that occurred February 14, 2018, our Rangers check on Azalea Trails on a monthly basis. We are glad to report that all is well and once the road is fixed by the US Forest Service, we will reopen this camp.
