Did you know our wonderful community library has a small children’s section?
We just finished updating this collection and have added some fantastic Southwestern-themed children’s books, as well as some new popular authors. New titles just added include: The Gum Chewing Rattler, Guess Who is in the Desert, and Cactus Hotel. Many of our desk volunteers previously worked in a library or a classroom and are more than happy to make book suggestions for younger visitors at SCOV.
New donations to our video section include “Star Wars Episodes I-VIII” in addition to Ag- Top: Little readers enjoy the children’s section. atha Christie’s “Poirot” Bottom: A few of our new children’s books series, starring David Suchet, in which a renowned Belgian detective solves the most challenging cases of the Art Deco era.

Slowing Muscle Decay as You Age
Your whole life, you probably heard that age-related muscle atrophy, also called sarcopenia, is inevitable. Yet you have probably seen people well into their senior years who have incredible muscle mass and strength. How is that possible? The truth is that while some muscle atrophy can be expected over time, anyone can improve muscle agility and response. This includes a great-grandmother in her 70s, as well as a college student in his 20s. In fact, everyone needs to learn how to slow sarcopenia because having strong, reliable muscles is important for a healthy, long life. The key to keeping muscle atrophy at bay lies in a structured exercise program, not a haphazard one. Though lifting weights occasionally is better than never lifting at all, people need to systematically engage in strength training if they want to see long-term benefits.

All SCOV trash and recycle pickups take place on Monday. Don’t forget: Republic Services picks up between 6 AM and 6 PM on Mondays. You must have your trash and recycle bins out at 6 AM or you risk a missed pickup.
SCOV has a dedicated customer service representative with Republic Services. Many of you are aware of the labor challenges the country is currently experiencing, and Republic Services highly encourages residents to email any service issues, rather than telephone, in order to receive the best service. Our representative can be reached at scov@ republicservices.com. This email is listed on the Republic magnet you received in your annual dues mailing.
Visit our web page where you can find the following information: 1) Recycling: View a video and web page on what Republic accepts in their recycling bins. Glass is accepted for recycling. 2) Holiday schedule: Check when you need to shift setting your bins out due to a holiday. 3) Report a problem: Missed pickup? Bin damaged? Click the Report Missed Pickup tab, fill out our form and Republic will receive a copy.

Architectural Review Kris Ahlstrand 510-693-5502 ARC@suncityorovalley.com Zoom meetings Second and Fourth Tue., 2 PM
The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) meets on a regular basis with homeowners about their plans for expanding the footprint of their home. In the recent past, we have been made aware of a few contractors asking for a large deposit before the project has been brought before the committee. If you are planning an exterior home improvement project, please be sure to contact the ARC before spending money or signing a contract. ARC members at arc@suncityorovalley.com are here for you.
You can also consult the SCOV Consumer Referral List for a reliable vendor. Ask your neighbors to give a recommendation on work they had done, or talk to residents who have completed a project similar to the one you are contemplating. These are other ways to make sure you are getting reliable contractors. Remember, buyer beware.
Artisan Center Renovation Task Force Chair Tim Kelley tkelleyscov@gmail.com See SCOV calendar for meeting dates, time and location
The Artisan Center Renovation Task Force (ACRTF) meets the first and third Tuesdays of the month as needed. The SCOV website will have current meeting notices. The current ACRTF practice is for vaccinated ACRTF members to attend in person. Non-vaccinated committee members and all others may attend via Zoom.
An updated version of “A Discussion of the Existing and Future Facility Requirements for the Artisan Clubs of SCOV” is available on the SCOV website.
The SCOV website (go to Members > Committees > ACRTF) provides the ACRTF Charter and other information for the task force.
Community Directory Chair Lisa Collins 812-344-4773 scov.community.directory@gmail.com www.scovaz.com/members/services/directory
SCOV pays nothing for the paper directory: The publisher finances it with ad revenue. Now, most people use the Internet, so fewer businesses buy ads in directories. Let the advertisers know that you appreciate their ads and keep your fingers crossed for next year. If the publisher can’t continue, we will need to decide if we want to pay for a paper directory ourselves.
Did you know our directory is also on the SCOV website? Find your neighbors’ names, or all the people from your hometown, or whatever you seek. The incremental search box will display results as you type.
Are you included in the directory? New homeowners are unlisted by default. To add or update your listing in the directory, the preferred method is to complete the online form “Change your directory listing.” Otherwise, you can fill out an orange card at the Welcome Center.
