The Chalk Creek wash is the largest wash in our community. In the past, heavy storms caused damage to the wash and golf course and threatened homes. As a result, a program was established to maintain the wash and minimize the threat from heavy storms. A key element to the ongoing maintenance of the wash is a series of inspections to determine the condition of the creek and identify potential threats to surrounding properties. The Properties Committee, together with HOA staff, will conduct an inspection during April. The Properties Committee works on a variety of tasks like this during the year. Our recent meetings have been in person and via Zoom. Please see the committee calendar on the SCOV website for scheduled meeting dates, times and meeting format.

Spring is finally here as the weather warms up and the Bermuda grass is starting to grow. Again, we appreciate and thank you for understanding how important it was not to overseed this winter season to allow for the improvement of the long-term health of the golf course. You will certainly see the dividends in course conditions during the transition this spring, summer and into next season.

The Cure for Cancer event last month was a huge success, and thank you to all who participated and donated to the cause. We raised well over $40,000 for the University of Arizona Cancer Center.

The Men’s 18-Hole Member Invitational is scheduled for April 8-9. All leagues are wrapping up their main tournament events this month, and we all look forward to the construction project with the Activity Center being completed next season to allow for meeting space and luncheons.

Our Chip & Putt event on Thursdays continues through this month on April 14 and 28, starting at 4:30 PM. You can play up to six people per group. The entry fee is $15 pp for golf, prizes, and dinner on the terrace. Sign up online through the reservation system or call the Pro Shop at 520825-3110.

This month’s Yappy Hour will be Thursday, April 21, from 4-5 PM, on the driving range tee. There will be drink specials and treats for the dogs. Social dogs with up-to-date shots are welcome and leashes are required. The driving range will close at 3:30 PM for a clean pick of all the range balls in the wash and desert areas. Volunteers are appreciated in helping us collect the balls.

Next month we will announce our new rates and membership plans for our fiscal year starting July 1, 2022.

We look forward to enjoying the golf course conditions this spring and thank everyone for their support in playing golf.

There were many agronomic reasons for not overseeding the fairways this season. Controlling persistent weeds in fairways is difficult when overseeded with winter ryegrass, and the biggest reason of all is to give the underlying Bermuda grass a break from the ryegrass competition. More time was also spent on other projects like drainage and desert clearing around tee boxes,

For over twenty years, most of the fairways were overseeded each fall. The exception was one year when we skipped overseeding as part of the two or four-hole rotation. The constant overseeding is very tough on the Bermuda grass, especially when it is irrigated with reclaimed water that introduces large amounts of salts. Combined with the surface competition of the ryegrass for sunlight and nutrients, the salts have a negative impact on the Bermuda grass roots. This year the Bermuda grass will not have any thin or bare areas in early summer and will be much more dense than previous summers.

However, even though the fairways will be in very good condition, they will still require the usual maintenance practices that are performed each summer. In June the fairways will be aerified and topdressed. During the later summer months, the fairways will be verticut several times to maintain thatch levels and improve growth patterns. Growth regulators will be applied to slow the growth rate and prevent excess clippings and scalping from mowers.

Not overseeding was just another part of the yearly maintenance of the golf course. All the other maintenance practices are still required to continually improve the health of the course.

No parking

It’s said, “April showers bring May flowers.” Around here, we’re hoping April showers bring fairway grass. To help create the best possible conditions, please remember to fill your divots with the right mix and please fix your ball marks. I know, it’s been a while since we had to be reminded about that.

Parking within 30 feet of the greens with or without a handicap flag is prohibited. “If you see something, say something.” The player’s assistants shouldn’t have to be the parking police.

Thanks to Mike’s crew for all their hard work.

In March, The Views Women’s Golf Club played their own version of the Solheim Competition. You might follow this competition at the women’s professional level of golf. The Solheim competition between the United States and Europe started in 1990. The competition has three formats: two-person best ball, alternate shots and individual match play. The team/country with the most points wins the Solheim Cup. The United States has won seven matches to Europe’s seven.

In our Solheim, we divided our members into two teams, the Hookers and the Slicers. Team colors were proudly displayed during this three day event. Team captains selected their players and determined the pairings for the matches. Their biggest job was to keep up team spirit. The captains this year were Pat Stark and Peg Bushong for the Slicers The Views 9-Hole Women’s Golf Club

This month we are featuring our On-Key Karaoke duo at The Views Restaurant on Sundays, 4-7 PM.

Pam Artibey started the Sedona Crossing band with Tom O’Shea in 1990. Their band became one of the top bands in Arizona in the 1990s, performing at Phoenix resorts. They opened for two Fiesta Bowls and performed at Rawhide in Chandler for over eight years. Pam also performed the National Anthem at an Arizona Diamondbacks game in 2001. She continues to perform as a single act: singing, playing guitar, flute and harmonica.

Tom O’Shea is a lifelong musician. Tom is a full-time bass player and audio engineer. He performed for an Arizona- based touring act, Corte, in the 1980s. Later, he started his own company, Blue Skye Sound Company. He has worked with artists such as Cyndi Lauper, Gordon Lightfoot, Kris Kristopherson and Smokey Robinson. Tom and his wife, Liza, moved to Oro Valley, AZ in 2020.

Easter will arrive on April 17 this year. We will be featuring a plated dinner (price and menu TBD) from 10 AM to 5 PM. Please call at least one week in advance to reserve your meal(s). As usual, there will not be any table reservations.

Once again, we want to thank everyone for their continued patronage and support. We hope you have a joyful and blessed Easter.
