Our club provides a twice-a-month opportunity for discussions of challenging ideas using the anthologies published by the Great Books Foundation. The topics vary, but the conversation is always wide-ranging, thoughtful and lively. Our April readings include selections by Toni Morrison, Roxane Gay, Maxine Kumin and Denise Levertov. Now that Omicron is fading, we are back to meeting without masks.

Newcomers are always welcome. For more information, please contact Barbara or Maryfaith.

Self-care: An introduction to techniques for easing mental tension, stress and anxiety. On Wednesday, April 20, 3 PM, Catalina Vista, Cindy and Dean Silverlock will discuss how to address that deeper layer of tension that is hard to access. This work helps with trauma, addictions and every day stress. You will learn how to work on your own feet to access this deeper tension that resides in your spine.

Metamorphosis is a gentle touch approach. Using your fingers, you will learn to sense this tension. There is not dialogue or analysis, making this a very relaxing experience.

When discord in our country, our communities, even within our inner circles, seems more prevalent than ever, club member John Padgett’s poem helps us think about bridging the gaps and why we need: Connection I’ll not speak of love / love is too ephemeral / So what do our souls need? Connection Connection with: Colleagues to share / ideas and experiments / Friends to share / joy and sorrow / Family who share / genes and history If we are open to connection / we appreciate / our colleagues / friends / family / and love them / for how we are enriched Don’t forget strangers / they bring / new experience And with connection they become / colleagues / friends / even family Connection

Fighting Covid has cost us both smiles and handshakes, but we’re getting them back and we can still aim to connect by listening respectfully and seeking to find areas of agreement rather than dissent. Reading and writing poetry might help. Join us.

Enjoying the Arizona liquid gold

Temperatures are rising, and that brings out snakes and other venomous creatures. Last month we held our annual snake aversion training and had a fantastic turnout. I heard several stories of snake encounters and these trained dogs know to avoid approaching a snake. If you have a fenced yard, you should install screening around any openings, such as gates and drain holes in cinder block walls to discourage snakes from entering your yard. We have screening installed along the whole dog park perimeter to minimize snakes entering the grounds. Since the park borders a wash and a brushy area, you should keep vigilant to spot snakes and report to 911.

This club provides an enjoyable monthly social evening during fall and spring. Get to know some of your SCOV neighbors who enjoy cooking and eating interesting food. Our four dinners in members’ homes (December-March) provide relaxing fun as we explore various cuisines (e.g., German, Indian, South American) or get creative with more ambiguous themes, such as “Color.” February’s theme was “Songs;” it was surprising how many songs reference foods (cherry pie, anyone?). Since everyone brings part of the shared meal, the hosts can be spared huge effort. Each dining group decides how to translate the month’s theme into menus. We also have catered events and an occasional summer potluck. Visit our website to see more photos and details. Questions? Please contact a club officer.
