Sun City Genealogy Society will hold our final in-person meeting on Monday, May 16, 1 PM, Catalina Vista. Please check the website for addition information about the meeting.

Exciting news for all genealogists: The National Genealogical Society (NGS) will hold their annual conference in Sacramento, California, from May 24 - 28, 2022. There will be three methods to attend the conference: in-person, online at home and on demand at home. Check out the NGS website at www.ngsgenealogy.org for information about registering for this conference.

More good news: the National Archives released the 1950 U.S. Census on April 1. The census is currently being indexed and will be available to club members on Ancestry and FamilySearch in the genealogy lab in the upcoming months. Check out where your family lived in 1950. Great Books Pres. Barbara Gates 302-354-6615 VP Maryfaith Fox 612-414-7789 maryfaith.fox@gmail.com Oct.-Apr., First and Third Wed., 2 PM, Catalina Vista/Mt. Lemmon

Our club provides a twice-a-month opportunity for discussions of challenging ideas using the anthologies published by the Great Books Foundation. The topics and genres vary widely, but the conversation is always thoughtful and lively. We meet twice a month, October through April, and will start a new volume, Great Conversations 3, in the fall.

Newcomers are always welcome. For more information, please contact Barbara or Maryfaith.

ILR - Institute of Learning in Retirement Pres. Mary Lee Fitzgerald fitzgerald.marylee@gmail.com www.suncityilr.com

The Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR) is returning to in-person classes for its fall term beginning in October. A long-time favorite, and co-founder of ILR, Gene Bammel is scheduled to teach “Philosophers Speak of God: From Plato to Whitehead.” ILR has the largest membership of all SCOV clubs and will celebrate its 20th anniversary in January 2023. Thanks to the creative leadership of the Bammels, the Myersons and so many more volunteers, ILR delivers an impressive array of adult learning opportunities here in Sun City. Information on registration, membership and ways to become involved can be found on the ILR website.

Metaphor is a figure of speech that allows poets to embellish their writing by creating vivid images that transcend literal meanings. Metaphors tend to activate imagination and broaden the reader’s understanding of what the writer wishes to convey. “Playing with Metaphor” is an excellent example of club member Christa Lubatkin’s skillful use of this device to describe a real or imaginary couple (this poem was previously published in “The Write Launch”):

His eyes were sunshine / my eyes pooling rain drops together we were morningdew / moonbeams searching the dark the torch of peace in the night / cascades of wisteria in purple and white we were yoke and withers / trotting together to unseen commands we reveled in each other’s goodness / costumed for the ball of our lives god and goddess frolicking/parting waters weathering fire and ice

Our present plan is to continue Zooming our meetings throughout the summer, enabling those who change locations to participate. Newcomers are always welcome to receive an invitation.

This is a month for “Thank You” and “Welcome Aboard.” Thank you goes to the outgoing Fido’s Friends board members, Chic Garner and Carol Tombre. Chic served as president and co-president over the years and is instrumental on getting many improvements completed at the K-9 Korral. Carol has served on the board as treasurer and co-membership positions for several years and has really kept this club on track with her commitment to getting things done. We welcome three new board members: Pres., Mary Murck; CoSec., Bertha Medina and Co-Membership/Treas., Marion Olson. Thank you all for stepping forward.

One final special thank you goes out to Rick Price and his staff at the Views Golf Club. They put on the Yappy Hour that our dogs and owners enjoy so much. It is a good time to meet other dog owners in SCOV that don’t necessarily use the dog park. Check “This Week In SCOV” for when these events are scheduled.

Garden Club Co-Pres. Joyce Wisbey 520-825-5425 bwisbey90@msn.com Co-Pres. Peggy Knapp 520-825-0664 pegnap@gmail.com VP Charlotte Herbert 541-580-6289 charlotte.h12@gmail.com https://sites.google.com/view/scov-garden-club/home

May recommendations for gardeners: • Adjust your drip-irrigation timer to meet plant needs in warmer weather. • Apply regular watering to fruit-producing plants such as citrus. • Fertilize container flowers, roses and citrus late in the month. • Prepare beds for monsoon vegetable gardening. • Remove fading cool-season annuals and replace with warm-season growers. • Keep your compost pile moist and turn it weekly. • A container garden using five-gallon tubs is a good option for keeping a small garden. Enjoy your summer. Our next meeting will be in October. Havurah David/Marilyn Smoler 520-818-7880 www.havurahscov.org

This month our community will bid goodbye to many of our winter visitors. We wish you all a happy and healthy summer, and look forward to seeing you again in the fall.

Havurah’s new board of directors is busy planning an exciting 2022-2023 season of events for our members. Continue to check our website periodically for updates in programming. The Book Group will soon choose our selections for the coming season. Our last book of this season, The Last Jew, by Noah Gordon, will be discussed on Zoom, Tuesday, May 10, 3:30 PM. Our club will show the movie Everything is Illuminated, Monday, May 16, 6 PM, Catalina Vista. Come join us.

One course in the Seafood Feast at Bob and Charlotte’s home

This club provides an enjoyable social evening monthly during fall and spring, to get to know your SCOV neighbors who enjoy cooking (and eating) interesting food. Our four dinners in members’ homes (December - March) provide relaxing fun as we explore various cuisines (e.g. German, Indian, South American) or get creative with more ambiguous themes, such as Color. The March theme was Seafood Feast (see photo; many additional mouth-watering photos are on the website). Since everyone brings part of the shared meal, the hosts can be spared huge effort. Each dining group decides how to translate the month’s theme into menus. We also have catered events and an occasional summer potluck. We’ll email our members about this coming summer. Questions or suggestions? Please contact a club officer. Republican Club Pres. Marilyn Rego 520-575-4022 mmrego@centurylink.net Second Mon., 3 PM, Catalina Vista/Mt. Our committee is seeking energetic volunteers to share their ideas and talents in planning next year’s party. Contact Anne.
