We live in a beautiful area and in a community with so much to offer. Many of us are filling our time enjoying all the amenities, making friends and enjoying the weather. We are pleased to live in a safe community. The Oro Valley Police Department is extremely responsive to us. With all the above in mind, have you taken time to think about what you can do to serve our community, assist the police and continue to keep our area safe? Join the Posse, our neighborhood watch. Six hours a year (two 3-hour patrols) is all we ask. What are you waiting for? Your help is needed. Call Linda Simōn.

Director of Golf Maintenance - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063
June is a very slow time for many of the activities around the community with the very hot temperatures. However, the summer months mark the busy season for golf course maintenance. During the winter months there aren’t many opportunities to aerate greens, aerate and verticut fairways, or do any major projects without interrupting tournaments or impacting play during the peak golfing season.
The heat of the summer has a negative impact on people, but the Bermuda grass thrives in the high heat. The heat increases soil temperatures which then provides the best time to aerate greens, tees and fairways, because they are able to recover quickly without disturbing as many rounds of golf. Aeration is necessary to provide oxygen, water and nutrients to the roots, remove thatch, and relieve compaction developed over a season of heavy golf and cart traffic. This process provides a healthier and more playable turf in the long run.
This summer, the major priority is continuing to establish a good Bermuda grass base. The process started by not overseeding the previous winter and will continue until we overseed again in September. The fairways will continue improving without going through a transition that normally occurs in June.
The aeration and topdressing are going to be repeated on greens, tees and fairways at least twice before the next overseeding. With the increased ability to prevent weeds in the fairways and perform all the necessary cultural practices this year, without dealing with the whole transition, we will realize vastly improved playing conditions throughout the summer.

Enjoying summer golf with friends. Left-right: H. Garren, Louann Convey and Deb DeCuir
Our 2021-2022 golf season has wrapped up, but we don’t stop playing golf together. During the summer months, we play in the 7 AM shotgun Tuesday mornings. Todd and Golf Genius create our foursomes, but there is only one organized game a month. The other Tuesdays, each foursome decides what game they want to play. This is a great time to practice match play, where some rules and strategies differ from stroke play. In the summer, many of our golfers enjoy traveling together to other courses. These get-aways refresh the spirit and create new friendships. Wherever you play your summer golf, stay hydrated, wear your sunscreen and enjoy the game with friends, old and new.
