From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Policies vs Operations by Ronna Heinig Imagine that we are all on a beautiful cruise ship. The passengers on board elect seven of us to determine the destination of the ship. After much deliberation, we choose Santorini, a small picturesque Greek island in the Mediterranean Sea. It is now up to the captain and the crew to safely get us to port. Policy is what guides our operations, and policies are made by the consent of the group. In this case, the elected seven chose our destination. At SCOV, policies are also governed by our Master Declaration and our By-Laws. The role of operations is to carry out policies, making sure we get to our destination. Your Board of Directors (BOD) has steered a course that has taken us from January 2020, when COVID was thought to have been just another variety of flu, to a major shutdown of operations, through the pandemic storm, and finally, safely to our reopening destination. The past 18 months have reminded us of the famous words from poet John Lydgate: “You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time.” Responding to your inquiries and concerns is an important part of our job. When you email “Directors,” all members of the BOD will receive your email. It is helpful for all BOD members to understand your questions and concerns. Members of the Board may have varied opinions on a topic, but the Board can have only one voice, our president, or their designee. Often, we receive questions regarding operations at SCOV. Since we are policy makers, we often refer these questions to our General Manager (GM), who captains our SCOV ship. We do this because our GM is best suited to answer questions that have to do with getting us to our destination. Questions about our destination are best suited for your Board of Directors. We are now setting course in a new direction with the renovation of our Activity Center. We are hopeful for “fair winds and following seas” as our community sails forward.

All Are Welcome at Sun City Oro Valley uring the COVID pandemic, I have become D aware of how diverse our individual ideas, thoughts, attitudes and opinions are at SCOV. Many of us were able to see those who wanted our community to be completely isolated, while others wanted SCOV to be completely open. Some agreed with the mask mandates, the room capacity limitations, and the six-foot social distancing, while others did not. It is this diversity that makes our community great. We have a plethora of committees at SCOV. Members of those committees bring their differing ideas, thoughts and opinions to the table to discuss the various points the committee may be considering on any given day. And they don’t always agree with one another. Sometimes there must be some give and take to make things work. We may not agree with all of your thoughts, ideas and opinions and you may not agree with ours. But one thing I think we can agree on is to respect each other’s diversity and reflect that respect as we agree to disagree. We have rules for our community that all residents have agreed to live by, and we will respect others as we keep the rules and governing documents. In the tapestry of life, we weave with all our individual lives in our community, and we welcome all our residents and their guests. We welcome those who visit The Views Restaurant and The Views Golf Course. We will do our best to treat all with equality.

Activity Center Renovation Updates There are two ways to be informed about the progress of the Activity Center Renovation. First, sign up for “This Week in SCOV.” You can sign up to receive these updates at www.suncityorovalley.com > News & Info > This Week in SCOV and then select “Click here to subscribe to this email.” Follow the directions on the form. The second way to find this information is on our website under HOT TOPICS > Activity Center Renovation. From here you have several options. There are updates, a place to ask questions or to find answers to previously asked questions. There’s also a button for the original concept from the Activity Center Renovation Committee that was voted on in March 2021. New information will be added as the plans are finalized. Communication is one of the most important elements of SCOV, and this is another way information is provided.
Program/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8077 Finding New Ways As the Activity Center renovation nears, the activities and club meetings that take place there have been moved to new locations. Understandably, it is a challenge to accommodate all clubs’ regular meeting days and times. Coco Sullivan, facilities coordinator, has worked with club leaders to relocate their meetings. Some schedules had to flex in order to maximize opportunities for all clubs. Thank you for working with Coco and your willingness to be flexible during the time the Activity Center will undergo its much-needed improvements. If your club is choosing not to meet for the summer, please inform Coco Sullivan at 520-917-8072.
Community Services - Katy Mosier scoroval@ciramail.com 520-917-8058 Having Work Done on Your Property? A good rule of thumb: Whenever you plan to make any kind of change to the exterior of your home, you will need some kind of HOA approval prior to acting on the project. This approval can be in the form of an Architectural Review Committee approval or an In-House approval. Applications for both kinds can be started by going to www.suncityorovalley.com and signing in. If you have not yet registered, please do so. If you are having difficulty signing in, please contact the front desk of the Administration Office and they will help you. Once you have registered, go to Members/Member Services/For Your Home. At this point you can request directions for a paint submittal or any other project. Follow the directions from there. Remember, if you are contemplating an expansion project such as a new patio cover or room addition, there will be steps in addition to the normal submittal procedures involved, and a longer time period before you gain approval. For more information on the Expansion Process, please go to Members/Documents/Board Policy/Board Policy ARC-006.

Beginning on July 3, the Library will open every Saturday morning from 9 AM-Noon, a complete return to pre-pandemic hours. Author events are gearing up with a mix of Zoom and in-person events in the works. Last month’s JA Jance event was a hit, with 56 residents logging in on Zoom to hear about her latest Ali Reynolds mystery-thriller. Laura Morelli, author of over a dozen books, including The Night Portrait: A Novel of World War II and da Vinci’s Italy, will give a Zoom presentation in September (see Coming Events on page 11). In-person visits with local authors are in the planning stage. If you enjoy indie movies and foreign films, you will want to attend the Great Views program, featuring Garry Buck on Wednesday, July 14, 10 AM, Catalina Vista/Mount Kimball and Pusch Ridge rooms. Come and hear Garry’s review of 20 movies, over half of which will not be on our shelves until after his presentation. This event is a perk for Friends of the Library members, but it is not too late to join. Applications are available in the Library. New items arrive almost daily. Expected in July are the latest books by Daniel Silva, Marie Benedict, Elin Hilderbrand, Charles Todd, Debbie Macomber, James Patterson and others. Over 40 videos were added to our collection over the last couple of months to help keep you occupied indoors during monsoon season. Stop by the Library soon to check out books and movies to keep you entertained or visit us online to browse our collection.

Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 How Can I Prevent Injuries? To avoid injuring yourself during exercise, don’t try to do too much too soon. Start with an activity that is fairly easy for you, such as walking. Do it for a few minutes a day, several times a day. Slowly increase the amount of time and the intensity of the activity. For example, increase your walking time and speed over several weeks. Start every workout with a warm-up. This will make your muscles and joints more flexible. Spend 5 to 10 minutes doing some light stretching exercises and brisk walking. Do the same thing when you’re done exercising until your heart rate returns to normal. Pay attention to your body. Stop exercising if you feel very out of breath, dizzy, faint, nauseous or if you feel pain. Talk with your family doctor if you have questions or think you have seriously injured yourself. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or problems with the AFC. AFC and Desert Oasis: See Hours of Operation on page 2. Tuesday, July 13, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, July 14, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and reopen the following morning at the regular time.

Active Health Committee presentations will resume in the fall when we expect to be able to meet in person. Look forward to dynamic speakers who will discuss what can be done to maintain and improve our health and longevity. Suggestions are welcomed on speakers who will discuss active lifestyle and healthy lifespan.

Architectural Review Kris Ahlstrand 510-693-5502 ARC@suncityorovalley.com Zoom meetings Second and Fourth Tue., 2 PM Fencing has been the most frequently received submittal for the past several months. If you are considering installing a new fence, partial fencing by tying into your neighbor’s, or adding on to the height of your existing two-foot brick wall, there are some things you should consider. The first requirement is to find out where your property line is located. A survey is the most reliable way to know who owns the wall or fence. The property line may be defined by rebar placed on the connecting corners of the property lines, or by a mon-

ument disk about the size of a quarter embedded into the cap of the wall. If this disk sits on your side of the brick cap, you own the property up to the wall, meaning your neighbor owns the wall. If the disk is placed on the other side of the brick cap closest to your neighbor, then you own the wall. If the disk is in the middle of the brick cap, the wall is shared by you and your neighbor. If there are no markers, inform your neighbor of your plans to add fencing, additional bricks, or fence to increase the height. The easiest way to ensure quick review and approval of your application for fencing is to include an ARC Neighbor Permission letter signed by all affected parties. All metal fencing must be painted weathered brown. For any additional questions, please contact us at arc@suncityorovalley.com.
Artisan Center Renovation Task Force Chair Tim Kelley 734-645-8199 tkelleyscov@gmail.com See SCOV calendar for meeting dates, time, and location
The Board of Directors authorized the Artisan Center Renovation Task Force (ACRTF) at their meeting on May 25 and named Tim Kelley as chair. As of this writing, the members and liaisons for the task force are being identified. The SCOV website (Members > Committees > ACRTF) provides the Charter for the task force. The website also provides “A Discussion of the Existing and Future Facility Requirements for the Artisan Clubs of SCOV.” An informal working group comprised of representatives from the artisan clubs met over the winter to research and write this discussion paper. The ACRTF will now build on the discussion paper, work with an architect, and develop a recommendation for the renovation of this 34-year-old Artisan Center facility. Find meeting dates, times and location on the website.
Community Directory Chair Lisa Collins 812-344-4773 scov.community.directory@gmail.com www.scovaz.com/members/services/directory
The paper directory typically goes to press in August. Read “This Week in SCOV” for updates. Check both the online and paper directories to ensure your listing is correct. To update your listing, the preferred method is to complete the online form “To change your directory listing….” Otherwise, you can fill out an orange card at the Welcome Center. Is your deceased partner still listed? Many people like to keep their loved one’s name in the directory, for safety or for sentiment. So, deceased spouses are removed only when the surviving spouse requests it. Only you can decide if it’s time to update your listing. Are you a new resident or have you moved within SCOV? New owners are unlisted by default. This includes those who move within SCOV. FYI: The publisher controls the Business White and Yellow pages. We can’t fix errors in those sections.
Consumer Referral - Vendor List Susanna Moran scovconsumerservices@gmail.com

The Vendor List may also be viewed at the monitor’s desk in the Activity Center during business hours. Please check the Vendor List often, as changes are made frequently. Vendors should email Susanna Moran to inquire about applying to be on the Vendor List.

Finance-Budget Chair Tim Kelley 734-645-8199 tkelleyscov@gmail.com Quarterly meetings on Mondays on Zoom. Check SCOV calendar for dates and times. The Finance Budget Committee (FBC) will meet on Monday, August 2, to review the unaudited financial results for the 2020-2021 fiscal year. These results will be audited by an outside independent firm with the results reported in October. Randy Ternary will be presenting the annual FBC member orientation at this meeting. This is an excellent opportunity for residents to listen in and learn about the budgeting process and financial reporting for our community. This summer, the periodic Asset Reserve Schedule and Fund study will be completed by an outside firm. The results of this study will be available in the fall. SCOV financial information is always available on the SCOV Members area of the SCOV website. FBC meetings and Quarterly Financial Conversations with Residents are held quarterly. Several projects are under consideration for committee support: 1) Renewing the community table has been suggested, for single diners to enjoy conversation with others, when adequate staffing is available, starting in August; 2) Utilizing donated funds to Friends of the Restaurant to cover the purchase of high quality, cost-effective wine and coffee systems, so high-end wines and signature coffee can be offered at reasonable prices in the new Activity Center coffee and wine bar; and 3) New furniture/awning for the terrace and grassy knolll. Fencing for the grassy knoll is being studied by the Board. The committee will meet as needed on Zoom this summer, the first Monday of the month, 2 PM.

Summer is here, and the weather is hot, making the coolness of the Gift Shop especially welcome. Featured artists for July are Pam Dage Kathy Mashburn (left) and Pam Dage and Kathy Mashburn. While looking for a new hobby, Pam found pour acrylic painting online and watched a lot of YouTube videos. Pam said, “I made many paintings, but I was missing my jewelry making since I could not get into the Silversmith and Lapidary Club and decided to try combining jewelry making and painting. The jewelry reminds me of my painting and the painting reminds me of the jewelry.” Originally from Utah, Kathy taught school, co-owned a bookstore and ran a small cafe in that store. Kathy says, “Crafting has always been interesting to me when I had the time. I am enjoying making felted clogs, leather belts, tatted items, knitted scarves, jewelry and bug offs, beaded covers for food and drink.”

Holiday Lights Chair Linda Bretz
The newly formed Holiday Lights Committee is pleased to announce several additional flowers have been fabricated for our display this year. We are nearly done making this season’s lights and are looking forward to finding new placements for these additions, plus those previously at the Activity Center, which will be under renovation during this holiday season. Not only does the flower fabrication take strong fingers, a great deal of patience and a whole lot of time, the materials are quite expensive. While donors support the majority of that cost, the Association chips in, and this year the Foundation has also provided a grant. A five-year plan has been developed to enhance our holiday display and includes a holiday tour of homes. You can help and have a great deal of fun in the process. Six more homes are needed that look gorgeous during the holidays willing to be on a Holiday House Tour the first Saturday of December. If you or someone you know fits that category, please contact Linda Bretz nashuachristmas@comcast.net for more details.

Loan Room - Community Assistance Chair Gay Russell Third Thu., 3 PM, WC1; Loan Room hours: Tue., Thu., 8-9 AM www.suncityorovalley.com/members/services/loan-room/
The Loan Room is located at the end of the Cart Barn and is open to all SCOV residents Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8-9 AM. Reservations may be made up to two months in advance of need, either at the Loan Room or on the website. Walk-ins are also welcome. When using the website, please remember that you are only making a request for items; it becomes a reservation when the process is completed by staff, usually twice a week. You will then receive a confirming email about your requested items. We have available most medical items, but some of the children’s toys are one-ofa-kind, so may not be available at the time of your request. During holiday times or seasonal parties, tables and chairs may be in short supply. We are open throughout the summer on regularly scheduled dates, unless otherwise notified. We greatly appreciate your continued support of our aluminum can recycling program.

Our committee is in recess. No meetings are scheduled this month. We plan to resume meeting in September.
Neighborhood Pride Chair Tempe Johnson 520-825-6994 Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 It’s Monsoon Season – Hopefully If they haven’t already, the monsoons hopefully will arrive much to the delight of desert plants which so badly need the moisture. With the rains come weeds, and it doesn’t take much to make them pop their heads above ground. Keep an eye on your yard and remove weeds while they are still small. Rains also cause bushes and trees to grow, seemingly overnight. Be sure to keep them trimmed back and off pedestrian sidewalks. Tree branches must not hang lower than seven feet above the sidewalk, so as not to interfere with or cause possible injury to pedestrians. As a reminder, it’s a good idea to look at roofs in your neighborhood, as strong winds can sometimes lift and move the tiles. Be a good neighbor and let others know if you see any roof damage or trees down during the summer. With so many of our residents away, it’s helpful to keep an eye out for each other. Be a good neighbor. Take pride, not only in your property, but that of your neighbors and friends.
Posse Chair Linda Simōn 520-789-7169 posse@5LP.com First Tue., 3 PM, Desert Oasis (no meetings until further notice) www.scovaz.com/committees/posse/ (must be logged in first)
It’s hot outside, and many of you want to air out your garages. Just remember to be sure to close your garage doors before going to bed. You don’t want unwanted creatures to surprise you late at night or early in the morning. We are looking to resume Posse patrols in October. We’re looking for some new Posse members and ask that that they be willing to spend a minimum of six hours a year on patrol (two 3-hour patrols). For those who may be interested in joining the Posse, please call Linda Simōn. I would enjoy talking to you and being able to give you an overview of what we do. Be healthy and stay safe.

Properties Chair Rich Oaks richoaks114@gmail.com Third Thu., 9 AM, via Zoom
Like all of the committees at SCOV, the Properties Committee is comprised of resident volunteers who give their time and expertise to our community. Horace Shearman has been an exemplary member of the committee for 20 years. Horace is retiring from the committee. He brought important technical expertise to the committee as he is an electrician by trade with extensive experience as a plant engineer. Horace recently worked on energy-saving lighting retrofits at various SCOV buildings and parking lots. His cheerful willingness to serve and his knowledge of SCOV facilities will be missed. The committee has met recently via Zoom. Please see the calendar on the SCOV website for scheduled meeting dates, times and meeting format.

Cell phone cameras are great, aren’t they? Most of us use our phones exclusively to capture the scenes of people or objects that we want to keep for posterity or possibly submit to the Tipster. Lately, many of the photos that we receive are too small for use in the printed Tipster. The reason for this is that when the photographer saved or emailed the photo, they selected “small” when prompted by the phone. Please always select “large” or “actual size” if you want to submit the photo for the Tipster. If you have any questions about submitting photos, contact editor, Marsha Dean, mdean@ suncityorovalley.com, 520-917-8069.

During the summer heat, hydration is extremely important. Let’s be prepared for thunderstorms, possible flash floods and lightning. It’s officially monsoon season in Southern Arizona, which means we need to be careful. Be sure to observe the following suggestions to keep yourself safe while heading out on the course: Check the forecast and check it often. Download and use a reliable weather radar app. Seek shelter immediately if you’re not able to get off the golf course in time. Don’t worry if you can’t finish your round; we are happy to give you a rain check “credit” to complete your round another time. The important thing is to be safe and use your best judgment when the weather is questionable. How to purchase or renew a membership: It’s the start of our fiscal year and time to renew or purchase a membership. If this is your first time purchasing an annual membership, visit the Pro Shop or call for more information. To renew an Annual Membership, you can go online to www.theviewsgolfclub.com to purchase, or contact the Pro Shop, 520-825-3110. We look forward to your joining us for the 2021-2022 season. Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063
In the middle of July, it will have been one year since the new greens were sprigged with the new TifEagle grass. The original goals of the greens renovation were to increase the size of the greens, provide more pin placements with less severe slopes, improve drainage to leach salts from the reclaimed water and provide a superior putting surface. After one year growing grass on the new greens, it has definitely been a learning experience. One of the biggest differences between the old greens and the new greens is irrigation management. The old greens had no drainage and held water. The problem with holding water well is the accumulation of salts which are detrimental to turfgrass root growth and leads to other issues like disease and algae. Conversely, the new greens are built on 10-12 inches of sand with drains at the bottom, so they drain quickly. They drain so well it is difficult to determine how much irrigation is required to maintain healthy turf. Over the winter months when the TifEagle was dormant, the greens were watered frequently to help soften the putting surface. However, even with frequent irrigation, they drained so well the new turf desiccated around the edges. This is what led to some of the edges being thin as they started to grow in the spring. After one year, the goals of drainage improvement, playability and size were all reached, but there is still much to be learned about maintaining these new greens.

The Men’s Nine-Hole league is playing through the summer. We play every Thursday, nice and early in the morning, so we are finishing long before it gets hot. Shotgun starts are back, which means we can be back in The Views Restaurant by 9:30 AM for a cold drink and maybe some breakfast. There are not many of us, so if you are sitting around wondering what to do on Thursday morning, join the league and play with us. You can join online and begin getting a handicap, if you do not already have one. It takes ten 9-hole games or five 18-hole games to establish a handicap. The Pro Shop can help if you have questions, or you can contact Tod Milton, theodore.r.milton@gmail.com.

When the Activity Center is closed for construction, you can still drop off your tabs at the Welcome Center, Desert Oasis or Catalina Vista. Remember, every tab counts. Did you know 1,267 tabs makes one pound? On average, the Ronald McDonald House of Southern Arizona raises $3,000-$5,000 annually through tab recycling. Japanese flower arranging, Ikebana, is the art of arranging flowers, branch materials, grasses and leaves. At its core is the beauty resulting from a combination of color, shapes and graceful lines. More than simple floral decoration, it is a form of sculpture with plant materials. Learn from certified instructors at your own pace, and make creative arrangements for your home.

Photo by Tom Prall Somewhere in rural America is a small spot on the map called Prairie Crossing, where a country road crosses a railroad. There’s a modest station where only the local passenger train stops, no express service to distant big cities. Across the road and just out of sight is Christie’s diner, a small café that serves folks from the neighboring farms and passing truckers. In the foreground on the local spur track is Underland’s Feed and Seed selling fertilizer, crop seed, animal feed, and other goods to keep the local economy humming. Club members named it in honor of the modeler who built it, Bob Underland. Next door is a loading dock where those two John Deere tractors will be unloaded for local delivery. If you think that building models–cars, boats, trains, spaceships, whatever–might be an enjoyable hobby, consider joining our club.

Tracy Getz created these two sculptures above, entitled the “Guardians.” The lions are approximately eight inches tall. The dark sculpture was made using three different bronze acrylics. Two of the bronze colors were used to provide shading and highlights. The white lion was made with white clay and painted a color that Tracy did not like, so he vigorously washed off the paint which left a white-washed, aged look. If you have a dog or cat, you probably already have a comfy bed for them. We want to provide comfy beds for the Humane Society’s animals. We use washable recycled fabric scraps and polyester fiberfill to make all sizes of pet beds. We hope to make those cats and dogs comfortable while waiting for adoption. We need more scraps and more bigger fabric pieces for the pillows. Can you help? Last month we donated 45 pet beds. Summer is here. If you want some relief, our shop is nice and cool while you work on one of your creations. We hope to have a silver casting day as well. Members, check your email for updates. This month the featured piece is a creation by Steve Adams, our club president. He made this bolo tie using a base layer of silver. He used a jewelers’ saw to cut out the shapes from another piece of silver, then soldered the two layers together. To fill in the the clouds, rain and corn, he used ground turquoise and silver dust. It is for sale in our Artisan Center shop windows. We hope this will inspire you to create a unique piece of your own.

Victor has been an SCOV resident for over 14 years and an active woodworker for the past four years. Thanks to help from the Wood Shop pros, he immediately fell in love with wood turning. This mesquite flower pot came from a tree cut down by a neighbor. The clock is a collaboration with Karin, his wife. You’ll usually find him having fun working on one of the shop lathes. A new member orientation is held at the Wood Shop the first Wednesday of each month at 4 PM. Call Bill Norton for further instructions. Club dues are $20 annually. Continuing Education Astronomy Pres. Allan Mashburn 435-219-0042 scovastronomy@gmail.com Oct.-May, Catalina Vista, date and time varied due to Activity Center remodel, check website www.scovastronomy.weebly.com
The Astronomy Club will return to live meetings this fall. The first meeting is Saturday, October 16, 7-9 PM, at Catalina Vista due to the scheduled renovations to the Activity Center. Future meeting dates will be posted in the Tipster. The Astronomy Club has a new website at https://scovastronomy.weebly.com for club information including future meeting dates. Check out this astrological event on Tuesday, July 13, 7:51 PM: Venus and Mars will come together in the western sky, 15 degrees above the horizon and appear to kiss in the night sky (very fitting, considering that in Roman and Greek mythology, Venus and Mars–or Aphrodite and Ares in Greek–were known to be lovers). This only lasts about 1½ hours before they set below the horizon.

“In this world of pain, even half a rainbow, even one cherry blossom.” Writing and reading poetry helps us define and process reality by allowing us to examine what we see, think, feel and imagine. The brevity and seeming simplicity of this haiku by Deborah A. Bennett encompasses the current status of our world with one sufficient descriptor: “pain.” It then offers the means to abate that pain with the hopeful symbol of even “half a rainbow” and the living beauty of “one cherry blossom.” Printed as part of a series called “Five Haiku in Spring,” this selection seems to celebrate a welcome reversal of the Covid closures that began last March and the gradual return of what this season used to mean. Experience the panacea that poetry can be. Newcomers are always welcome at the “Corner.”

On May 14 we hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for the opening of the new small dog addition and expanded large dog section of the K-9 Korral. This was originally envisioned by Dr. Bill Abel back in 2005. In 2018, Ron Brown and Allan Keller volunteered to research and propose upgrades to the dog park. They visited other local dog parks, surveyed Fido’s Friends members, researched costs and prepared presentations. In 20192020 Kari Durfur and Chic Garner (co-presidents) presented the Bob Abel (Fido’s Friends founder) findings to the SCOV board. After and Chic Garner (Fido’s Friends president) several board presentations and discussions, and with the lobbying by Ronna Heinig (even though she is a cat person), the expansion project was approved.

The ribbon cutting ceremony marks the first of several improvements planned for the K-9 Korral. With the SCOV project money and the generous donations from club members, we are continuing plans to install a new entrance sign, provide more shade structures and additional seating. We want to extend our thanks to all persons who made this project a success and to Phil Fisher for photographing this event.

Aqua Tone is a toning water workout that incorporates a variety of rhythmic body movements performed in the water. This aquatic exercise class enhances cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance. We meet Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 9 AM in the winter, 8 AM in the summer, at the AFC pool. There is no fee to join the club or the class. The teachers are club member volunteers. Being able to do a basic swim stroke is very helpful. Items used in the class are buoys, boards, noodles, balls and a fitness band (you’ll need to bring your own). A band can be purchased from Marcia for $5. We assign an experienced member to a newcomer to help with learning the various movements. You will get a good workout in a fun class.

Have Covid restrictions decreased your movement and mobility? Our club is back in the swing of things and we perform 55-minute gentle water exercises based on those designed by the Arthritis Foundation to help with balance and range of motion. These are great for those of us with arthritis, fibromyalgia, replaced joints, etc. Each exercise can be modified for personal limitations. You may wear your hat, sunglasses and shirt for protection from the sun. Water shoes may also be brought in. Come give it a try. Please note: The outside air temperature must be 77 degrees or higher for the class to be held.

Sally Martinez is expert at keeping us strong and flexible with a variety of aerobic and weight exercises plus wonderful stretch and balance moves. You’ll be amazed at how good you’ll feel. Unfortunately, we can have no new members or guests at this time. We will continue to use SignUpGenius to register to attend. A link is provided by email each month. Pilates Mary Ayers 520-638-7916 scov.pilates@gmail.com Mon., 3 PM, Thu., 1:30 PM, AFC/Studio
Summer is here and both the Monday and Thursday classes are small and more personal, making it a great time to try out Pilates. Stretching exercises are done first to warm up, then the Pilates mat routine is performed with modified moves for those of us with limitations. People ask, “Can the benefits of Pilates, which come from strengthening and stretching exercises, really develop the body’s core (your abdomen and back muscles), make you stronger overall, increase spine mobility and build flexibility?” The answer is a firm yes. Additional benefits include improved balance, muscle tone, stamina and a feeling of well-being. The cost is $8/class and annual club dues are $20 pp. Please join us or just stop by and watch. Call Mary with questions.

The barn owl is just one of several owls seen here in SCOV. The largest and most common is the great horned owl with a wingspan of 44 inches; but the seldom seen, ghost-like barn owl is pretty big too, with a wingspan of 42 inches. Adding to its scariness is a scream that resembles that of a frightened woman. While the barn owl is nocturnal, it has been seen here several times during the day. But, like most owls, it prefers to prowl the area at night Steve Holmes photo looking for rodents. The Birders Group has now entered the summer hiatus with only informal ad hoc trips during the hot summer months when even the birds take a break. We will resume our scheduled activities in September. Come join us.

All courts in use with members waiting Summer is here and many seasonal residents have left. In the first quarter of 2021, we had a very active court usage. At times members had to wait to play. Everyone is enjoying the playing time and having fun. We stress safety. Proper shoes (tennis) are necessary. No street shoes or sandals may be worn while playing. For liability purposes, any guest or nonresident who plays must sign in and be accompanied by a resident of SCOV. During the month of June, the pickleball courts were resurfaced, so no play occurred. However, once the courts have been refinished, play will start again. The club also had three fans installed by the courts which will help cool summer players.

Water volleyball is a year-round sport. Summer is a great time to come out and get your feet wet, so to speak. Singles or couples always welcome. The water is refreshing and what better way to stay active while cooling off for two hours, twice a week. Sunday and Thursday are casual play days. These are days where folks don’t take things too seriously, but still enjoy the activity. We strive to make it fun for everyone. If a more competitive type game is for you, it’s best to come and watch a few Monday games first. Either way, it’s fun for all. You’ll hear us long before you see us as we are quite boisterous. We’re a friendly group that encourages all participants. Good serves, sets and hits are always acknowledged by both sides. That’s what makes it fun.
