Welcome
to the July issue of Seaford Scene Wow! the year is flying by – we’ve already had the longest day of the year, and as I write this, the warm sun is shining and summer is finally here. I hope you enjoyed last month’s Bank Holiday and Platinum Jubilee celebrations? Chichester Road certainly did (page 4) as did Cradle Hill Community School (page 13). Our cover photo this month is of the award-winning Driftwood Garden, which will be open as part of the Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail, along with other beautiful gardens in Seaford (see page 8). Be sure to visit these amazing gardens in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. If you fancy getting active outdoors during the summer, why not join Cycle Seahaven who have both on- and off-road rides for all abilities (page 32), or pop along to the new tennis courts at The Salts – it is Wimbledon season after all (page 49)! But the applause must go to three local dads who have committed to the Ocean Adventure – the world’s toughest row of 3,000 miles. Turn to page 82 to find out more. Seaford Photographic Society have their annual exhibition this month (page 24) and Life in Front of the Lens is on at the Star Brewery Gallery, Lewes (page 104), whilst Richard Potter’s exhibition, Landmark – Landscape Paintings and Other Works is on at the Crypt Gallery (page 43). There’s lots more to see and do in the What’s On section, see it on pages 123 to 128, so have fun in the sun and enjoy your July! Fran Tegg, Editor

Seaford’s Platinum Jubilee What a better opportunity to bring the community together than a street party for our Queen’s Jubilee. That’s what we all thought when we were granted permission to close the road, but none of us could have imagined the impact and fantastic energy it could bring to our lovely street and our now bigger community. I’m sure not many could have foreseen how the impact on good old fashioned community bonding would be replenished with our street party. Never did I expect the impact, it was totally amazing! Chichester Road in Seaford has over 100 residences. Once our amazing neighbour Paul, with his lovely wife Jo had organised the closing of the road, it was time for a group of us to plan how we could make the day special. We knew we wanted something fun and low key, no big extravagance but just lots of fun kids activities, whilst us grown ups could engage with neighbours who we should have met many many years ago.
What a great start with people galore all chatting and laughing. Our introduction to the afternoon was announced with a poem by our amazing resident Brett. In 1952 they said… “Hey Liz put this on your head!” A crown of gold and jewels it is, It is now yours, your Majesty Liz. Wear it with pride and dignity, Lead your people on this island in the sea. 70 years have been and gone, Since that day you put it on. You’ve travelled the world, flying the flag Keeping Britain great, you never flagged. People the world love you so, The people of Britain won’t let you go! So here’s to you, from all the land And with a glass, can we all stand. So here’s to you, 70 years it has been Raise a glass and ‘God Save The Queen!’ With much cheer our day began and got better and better – neighbours young and old getting to know each other, neighbours who have lived on the road for years and years, having never met, laughing, new neighbours bonding over crazy life coincides, chatting for hours, children meeting friends and games galore – treasure hunts, quizzes, splat the rat, pavement chalking and more. Children were enjoying cycling, scooting and just playing on the closed road for hours with new found friends – not bothered or interested in their tablets, play stations etc! Chichester road couldn’t have wished for more. Thank you Queen Elizabeth II for everything you have done to serve our country, but also immensely from Chichester road, how we have all relished in the love of community spirit.

Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail This month sees the Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail take place across the weekend of 23rd and 24th July. Regular readers will know the event has been raising money for the Macmillan Horizon Centre in Brighton over the last 10 years and is organised by Driftwood Fundraising Group, headed up by Seaford garden owner, Geoff Stonebanks. Geoff tells us, ‘This summer will be quite special on two counts, the first, our total fundraising for Macmillan Cancer Support will top the magical £100K mark and the second, our Patron, TV gardener, Christine Walkden will be present to open the event at 11am in my garden, Driftwood.’
Seahaven Hard of Hearing Club
Last month our members enjoyed a Jubilee party. We were joined by the Seaford Sunshine Strummers who were, as usual, brilliantly entertaining. The tables were laid out in red, white and blue. Jenny, a committee member, brought along the game of Play Your Cards Right so we had two teams playing. It rekindled memories of the wonderful Bruce Forsyth. The raffle was also very popular with good prizes to be won. Members also went to see to see the comedy Off the Hook at Seaford Little Theatre on the 11th June. Lip reading commenced on 7th June at 10am and runs every Tuesday at Sutton Corner Barn, formerly the 60+ Club. If you would like to join, phone Jayne on 01323 655957. The next social meeting will be on Friday 1st July when our speaker will be Neil Sadler talking about gongoozling for beginners -- a life on the canals. We meet at St James’ Clubhouse, Blatchington Road, Seaford at 2pm. Everyone welcome. Pauline White

This year, there are 17 gardens scheduled to open across the weekend between Brighton and Seaford, with all bar 1 allowing dogs on leads too. Seven gardens are located in Seaford, including a couple of returning gardens, who have not opened for several years. There are Seven in Brighton, including a brand-new allotment belonging to the Horizon Centre, with two gardens in Saltdean and one in Telscombe. Weather permitting, it will be a memorable weekend with several of the gardens along the trail serving delicious home-made tea and cakes. As far as Seaford is concerned, both Sally Attrell, at 27 Alfriston Park and Geoff ’s garden in Bishopstone will both be serving teas. Driftwood also has a selection of local artists’ work for sale across the weekend too. Christine Walkden will be at Driftwood for the opening of the trail at 11am and may well be able to visit other gardens in the town too, check the website for full details on the day. Tickets for the event can either be purchased in the first garden visited or bought online ahead of the day, with all the information on the trail web site www.macmillangardentrail.co.uk. Tickets cost is £8 per day, on both Saturday and Sunday, or just pay £3 at the gate for each garden visited. Check the details for each garden before visiting as four of the 17 are only open on the Saturday. Photos from top: Driftwood garden; Lullington Close garden.

Cradle Hill Community School celebrates Queen’s Platinum Jubilee The pupils of Cradle Hill Community School celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee by having a week of activities and celebrations. The week started by officially opening the school’s time tunnel. Each of the seven year groups created a section of the tunnel to celebrate the decades of our Queen’s reign.
On Friday 27th May in the afternoon the Deputy Mayor of Seaford attended the schools official planting of the Queen’s Green Canopy at the school. The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a

The school then attended a tree planting ceremony at Paradise Park gardens with all the other schools in the area to commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in their special Jubilee garden.

unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 which invites people from across the United Kingdom to Plant a Tree for the Jubilee. (Canopy, 2022). The day was finished off with a whole school picnic party on the school field for all 615 pupils and around 80 staff and volunteers. Mrs Keith, Head Teacher said, ‘It was a fantastic week for the children, learning all about the Queen and the decades she has reigned. Our staff arranged a wide range of exciting activities that I hope will ensure all our children have made memories that will stay with them throughout their lives’. The Guardian newspaper’s Health Policy Editor Denis Campbell has highlighted not only a shocking rise in the number of young people being treated for mental health problems but also the fact that many others are not receiving the help they need. The latest NHS figures show ‘open referrals’ – troubled children and young people in England undergoing treatment or waiting to start care – reached 420,314 in February, the highest number since records began in 2016. ‘Open referrals’ are under-18s who are being cared for by child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) or are waiting to see a specialist, having been assessed as needing help against treatment thresholds. GPs, teachers and mental health charities believe the criteria are too strict, exclude many who are deemed not ill enough, and amount to rationing of care. Consultant clinical psychologist and founder of youth mental health charity stem4, Nihara Krause, is quoted as saying that teachers and GPs state that children in mental health distress were either being rejected in record numbers because their difficulties do not meet the high threshold for treatment or were stuck on long waiting lists. She said not just the prevalence but also the severity and complexity of youth mental health problems had increased in recent years. In addition, Covid-induced loneliness, more time spent online, disrupted routines and exposure to family stress had increased levels of distress. NHS England’s national mental health director Claire Murdoch said demand continued to skyrocket, with a third more children treated in February this year than February 2020. The NHS had responded by expanding mental health teams in 4,700 schools and colleges and setting up 24/7 mental health crisis telephone support services for all ages. These now received 20,000 calls a month.

So where does The Youth Counselling Project (TYCP) slot in? Imagine a pyramid with CAMHS’ services and hospital admissions at the top and the schools-based TYCP just below. With demand for CAMHS’ services outstripping ability to provide it, it is no wonder that requests for counselling by TYCP’s specially trained therapists continues to rise. With that of course comes the need for money to pay therapists who are currently on course to help 93 children in the next academic year from all five of Seaford’s state-maintained schools. Each block of 10 sessions of one-to-one therapy costs around £500, with more money needed to pay for group sessions should these be deemed more appropriate for some other youngsters. TYCP is fortunate to receive a number of large grants from foundations and other agencies, but these have to be competed for against other charities so it has to be continually on its toes, particularly in the current economic climate of high inflation and increasing need. Generally these big monies can only be used to fund the therapy itself so TYCP’s team of volunteers hugely welcomes donations from smaller local groups and individuals as these can be used to pay admin costs, as well as contribute towards paying for counselling sessions. A huge thank you to Scoop & Weigh in Broad Street which has raised an amazing £720 for TYCP. As this issue was going to press TYCP was organising a fundraising quiz at The Old Plough, and in May a raffle at an event at Bishopstone raised £61.73. Andrea Hargreaves Photo: A meeting at Seaford Head School to publicise the work of TYCP, (l-r) trustees Jo Stone, Julia Hancock (chair) and Christine McAllen with headteacher Bob Ellis.

Is Equity Release safe? Yes, equity release is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), providing protection and security. Premier advisers have specialist Equity Release qualifications. The FCA says that all promotions must be clear, fair, balanced and not misleading. This should make choosing between plans relativity easy, as information has to be given in such a away that you can compare details. These rules give further protection, security and, if need be, access to compensation schemes. As an extra safeguard, Premier is a member of the Equity Release Council (ERC) and recommend ERC approved plans.

UNO22: seven –
An Inspiring Selection of Art, Craft and Design for the Summer Season Gallery Uno, 14a High Street, Seaford BN25 1PG UNO22 SEVEN Opening times: Mon – Sat 10am – 4pm, Sundays Midday – 3pm (Closed Wednesdays) from Thursday 23rd June until Tuesday 19th July. Whether it is a gift to mark a special celebration, a token of friendship or an item to adorn the home, you will find something to suit all tastes and pockets during Gallery Uno’s next exhibition UNO22 SEVEN. Phil Duncan, Gallery Uno’s curator, says ‘One of the great joys of our exhibitions is discovering the back stories behind each and every artist. Recently it has been my pleasure to learn more about our next featured exhibitor Debbie Siniska; rag rug and felt maker, artist, author and teacher.’
Debbie Siniska – Textile Artist
Debbie moved to leafy Ticehurst, East Sussex, from South East London in the early 1990s. Already working in textiles, using vintage and found fabrics, she came across some fascinating old hand tools whilst textile foraging in a local charity shop. The tools turned out to be for traditional rag rug making, and with a bit of trial and error, they soon became an intrinsic part in the development of her future artwork. After studying felt making at City and Guilds level she went on to teach both rag rug making and felt making in schools, and adult residential colleges in the South East, including West Dean College, near Chichester. She devised the Creativity in Schools project sponsored by Veolia, Brighton and Hove and Kent County Councils which travelled round primary schools teaching children the virtue of traditional hand tools and using recycled textiles. Beautiful school banners and tiny cushions were created that were later exhibited in libraries and churches and featured on the local news channel.
20
In the early 2000s Debbie was a regular contributor for Inspirations magazine, Popular Crafts, Crafts Beautiful, Make It! and Craftsman. The craft suppliers sponsored these articles and created her projects as printable versions for students. Her work also appeared in several how-to craft books. In 1994 her book Decorative Beadwork was published as part of the Letts contemporary crafts series and later she self published her books Rag Rugs Old into New which are available through her classes or on Amazon. She has also appeared on satellite TV and on Channel 4’s Homemade Home with Kirstie Allsopp, showing her rugs and demonstrating the techniques. She was subsequently very busy from then on with teaching, talks and commissions. Her work has been exhibited in the V&A in London, as part of the Heritage Crafts Association. She was commissioned by the Tate Gallery shop to create 8 rugs in the style of the Bloomsbury group to accompany exhibitions to celebrate the millennium. Charleston Farmhouse, former hub of art collective the Bloomsbury group during the 1930s, also commissioned her to create a facsimile of an old Bloomsbury rag rug. It is now displayed in the bedroom once used by John Maynard Keynes during his stays at Charleston. Recycling has become an essential element to her work, as it evolves incorporating favourite old fabrics with memories into commissioned pieces to bring life and meaning to the work. She continues exhibit widely and run pop-up rag rug and felt making workshops, keeping these two endangered heritage crafts alive.

Seaford Photographic Society The final month of our 2021/22 season started with an Out and About social evening, where we had a wander around Cuckmere Haven with our cameras then headed back to a Seaford pub for a few drinks. Next was the Chairman’s Challenge, a fun competition with the set subject Motion judged by our chairman Colin. Well done to Kevin Smoker, Simon Watkins and Chris Dawson, who took the top three places. There was some lively discussion afterwards about how the photos were taken and what the photographer was trying to achieve. The penultimate meeting of the season was a lecture by Colin Winstanley on How to Edit Your Photos. This was an excellent talk about the importance of editing and how it can turn a dull image into something special. To do this properly, you probably need to spend as much money on your computer as on cameras and lenses! He explained the basics of how Lightroom and Photoshop
work, as well as other similar but free options, and went through his workflow for editing. Finally we had the club’s AGM and Awards evening. Congratulations to Thelma Long, Simon Watkins, David Nickalls, Anna-Marie Armstrong, and Stephen Day, who all came away with trophies. Thelma Long was awarded the ‘Photo of the Year’ prize. In the Standard Group the Photographer of the Year trophy went to David Nickalls, who will now move up into the Advanced Group for next season. Particular congratulations to Anna-Marie Armstrong who had a very successful year and went away with the Advanced Group Photographer of the Year trophy. Last month we reported that several of our members had photos accepted for the annual KCPA Exhibition, held in Faversham. We are pleased to announce that Colin Mitchell, Simon Watkins and Chris Dawson have now had images selected to represent the KCPA in the PAGB Inter-Federation Print Competition. It is quite an achievement to have your work chosen to go forward into this national competition, so congratulations to Colin, Simon and Chris. The 2021/22 season has finished and we are now in our summer break but the good news is that we are having our traditional annual exhibition, for the first time since 2019, starting at the end of July, (see the advert left). This will be a great opportunity to come along and have a chat with some of our members, see our work, and find out a bit more about what we do. We’d love to see you there. It’s at a new venue for us as well. You can see all you need to know about the club on our website www.seafordps.org, including the latest news, programme of events, successful images, competition results, and how you can join us. There has been much said, in the last few years, about the general malaise affecting Britain’s seaside towns. Fortunately Seaford has escaped such criticism, essentially because much has been done to improve the local environment for its residents. It is essential that, as a town, we keep moving forward with projects which not only make this a good place to live but also help to boost the local economy. The Seaford Community Partnership has been at the forefront of projects such as The Shoal and the Gateway Project, providing signage to help visitors access the town’s shops and access to the seafront year-round at The Causeway. We have also, in partnership with the South Downs National Park Authority and local groups, been involved in the development of environmental projects. Now we want to hear from you. What improvements would you like to see? Do you have ideas for projects which would make Seaford an even better place to live? On 25th July at 7pm at Crossways Church, Seaford Community Partnership will be holding it’s AGM and we would like you to come along. Let us tell you what we have been doing, and tell us how we can help your ideas to come to fruition. Please contact: keithblackburn@live.co.uk If you would like to be involved with the Cliff Gardens Project as published in the June Seaford Scene, page 40, please email: hm@seafordpartnership.co.uk

It was a stormy sky when Cycle Seahaven’s WOW group (Women On Wheels) recently set off on a ride over the South Downs but they made it to the top (photo top). A well-earned refreshment stop was taken at Beanstalk Café located in a beautiful setting between Firle Bostal and Bo-Peep Bostal along the Old Coach Road. Plenty of chat, laughter and good banter ending with ice creams, and even avoided the rain (photo above). Dr Bike is a group of cycle enthusiasts from Cycle Seahaven who want to help local people to use their bikes more. If you are not pedalling because of dodgy brakes, stiff gears, rattles, creaks or soft tyres, then bring your poorly cycle to a Cycle Seahaven Dr Bike surgery located at The Big Park in Peacehaven, 10am-12pm on the 3rd Saturday of every month. Additional surgeries are throughout the year and advertised via Cycle Seahaven and local media. Neighbourhood Watch Roundup
Special Edition: How Safe is Seaford Really? All The Statistics
Our police resources are allocated based on need, and so if no crime is reported, no resource is allocated. We are dead certain that more than three bicycles were swiped in Seaford Central in the last 12 months! Overall, there has been a significant drop in crime over the previous year, specifically robbery, which was
We say it every time, that Seaford is one of the safest towns in the country but is that as true to say today as it was before the pandemic? Have cost-of-living increases, job losses through the pandemic and other pressing social and economic factors made an impact on crime in our town? Luckily, we have superb statistics available to us through the Sussex Police website, so the answer is relatively easy if you have the time to troll through the data. Sussex Police has divided Seaford & Bishopstone into five areas, so to have a thorough look at what’s what in yours, head on over to: https:// www.sussex.police.uk/area/your-area and enter your postcode. For an overview, here’s some crime data we put together for Seaford Central over the last 12 months and total reported crime over the last 36 months from May 2019.
It seems our biggest challenge in the centre of our town is how we treat each other and how we behave! Of the 415 reported crimes (an average of 34.5 incidents a month), an astonishing 312 involve bad behaviour toward each other or criminal damage. Of course, these stats reflect reported crimes, and once again this exercise underlines the importance of reporting every crime.
38
something we barely ever experienced before the pandemic. Although these statistics are only relevant to Seaford Central, a quick look at the data for other areas of town echo the trend – not only is Seaford one of the safest towns, but our crime rate is also reducing year on year. It would be really interesting to see Cyber Crime reported as a separate statistic, as that seems to be where all of us are most vulnerable. There is definitely merit in the new policing model implemented over the past couple of years – there is real value in having dedicated PCSOs who get to know their town and townsfolk, and this is reflected in the significant reduction in crime, specifically the reduction in antisocial behaviour. Our DC for Lewes is CI, Di Lewis. Di is the policing commander for Eastbourne and Lewes and is responsible for the local policing of these districts. She leads the local Neighbourhood Policing Team consisting of both police officers and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) who are dedicated to protecting our communities, catching criminals and delivering an outstanding service in the locality. It sounds utopian, but it is honestly so simple even if all we give is a friendly smile.
PCSO’s are at https://www.sussex.police.uk/area/, pop in your postcode and click the “On The Team” tab. We too have our role to play as Great Neighbours because nobody knows the neighbourhood better than we who live here. Keeping an eye out for things that look iffy, reporting crime, caring about our neighbours who are more vulnerable or need a little help, all adds
A visible and relevant Neighbourhood Watch also helps to keep crime at bay and we need do no more than display a roundel on our front doors to achieve this. While every resident of Seaford and Bishopstone is automatically under the umbrella of what we do, our Association relies on membership to keep doing what we do. It costs £3 per household per year to be Association members, and £2 per household per year for retirees. Joining is so simple too – just head over to www.sandbnhw.org/join

Landmark – Landscape paintings and other works From12th to 23rd August, I will be showing my latest Landmark landscape paintings and other works at The Crypt Gallery in Seaford. Most of my landscapes feature our stunning East Sussex and places like the Cuckmere Valley and Ditchling Beacon, which I try to capture in a bold and colourful way. Walking in nature and looking at artworks that embrace nature’s essence is uplifting and therapeutic. My philosophy is to use colour and form to reconnect us with our roots, in the earth and the natural cycle of the seasons. In a similar way, the Rock and Ore series of modern works look at nature more directly; in rock layers that span millions of years. I used my previous experience
as a graphic designer to make the rock forms I came across, into a more unified series of paintings to heighten the senses. With information overload and shortening attention spans we crave a return to simplicity and connectedness. For me, nature in all its forms symbolises this yearning. Since 2017, I have been teaching Watercolour, Acrylic and Drawing courses at St James’ Trust in Seaford, which is an excellent venue for all sorts of community activities. I offer a structured and layered approach, with a sense of humour, to give my students the best possible array of painting techniques so that they can progress confidently. I also intend to run a Creativity for Wellbeing art course in Seaford if there is enough interest. Back in 2015, realising that there was no internet platform to give people creative inspiration, I built one! I remember that when I did my teacher training, I could have benefitted from a resource full of ideas for art activities, which inspired me to create www. creatvity4wellbeing.com. Enjoy! I look forward to seeing you at the exhibition. Do come and browse! Richard Potter BA Hons PGCE MA

How to Sell Your Seaford Home Successfully Moving home is a big life-changing decision So, it’s vital you get things right when choosing to up sticks and sell. The good news is that by avoiding the mistakes people often make when selecting an estate agent, you dramatically raise your chances of a successful, low-stress sale. The key to unlocking your property’s potential is selecting the right agency to sell your home. The days are long gone when all an agent had to do was put a property on the internet and wait for the phone to ring. We’ve been serving Seaford since 1987, and these tips below are based on our decades of experience. This approach gives you the best possible chance of success when selling your biggest tax-free asset.
Do Your Research Look at which local agents have good reviews and seek word of mouth recommendations.
The Rule of Three Call at least three agencies
to see how they handle your initial enquiry. Judge them on the questions they ask you because this shows their level of interest and enthusiasm to understand your specific selling situation.
Beware of Overvaluations Some unscrupulous
agents may overvalue your property simply to get your instruction. This can cause significant problems, price reductions, and further headaches.
Cheap Fees = Less service If an agency tries to lure you in with cheap fees, remember that something always has to give when low prices are offered, and it’s usually the level of personal service you receive. Seek Evidence A good estate agent will have no
issue putting you in touch with recent clients who have used their services successfully. If you follow the advice above, we’re confident you’ll put yourself in a position for a more successful moving experience. We’re here to help with any questions, so feel free to contact us. Thanks for your time.

A New Epidemic
Is stress making you sick?
We all know about COVID but in fact one of the major health risks today is stress. Workdays lost to stress, depression and anxiety, are estimated to cost the British economy in excess of about £35 billion a year in lost output. But what exactly is stress? Stress is a natural, short term response to danger. It floods our bodies with the hormones, adrenalin and cortisol. In combination, these hormones activate our heart and cardiovascular system. They raise our blood pressure and set us in a heightened state of alertness. They affect our liver and increase our blood sugar. During a stressful event, all nonessential body functions, e.g. cell repair and ovulation, cease. If we’re under immediate threat from say, a mugger, or a life-threatening accident, a strong stress response is good, it may even help to save our lives. But long-term stress is bad for us. Exposure to large quantities of adrenalin and cortisol over a long period compromises our immune systems and increases our risk of suffering from high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and Diabetes.

The most common form of long-term stress reported to GPs is work-related, and specifically it is reported by those people who feel they have little or no control over their working environment. A healthy working environment includes choices; some control over what you do and an element of appreciation for the effort you put in. Unfortunately, many working environments fall short of this.

Alarmingly, the Whitehall Experiment, which monitored 10,000 civil servants over a long period, found that those at bottom of the hierarchy experienced four times the mortality rate of those at the top, even when poor diet and smoking were factored into the calculations! It seems that some of us quite literally, are working ourselves to death. If you feel this is you and a change of job isn’t possible, then advice has been to try to balance stress levels both at and away from work. Yet recently the pandemic has meant that for many of us, home and work have become inseparable, and this has been added to by wider stress in the world, including soaring food and energy prices and the war in Ukraine. Take a few minutes and see if you can articulate in a few words what the major sources of stress are in your working environment: unrealistic deadlines or targets, obstructive colleagues, interfering management etc. Then do the same for stress triggers away from work. If you feel you can tackle any of the issues, then do that. This isn’t always possible, but sometimes just knowing exactly why you are feeling stressed is enough to help you cope and see a way forward. Perhaps you need to restrict the time you spend answering work emails out of hours or cut down on the amount of news you consume, or make time to go for a walk in the fresh air. Exercise is actually an excellent stress reducer, along with yoga. A well-balanced diet also helps, and drinking lots of water is a great way to help the body rid itself of toxins. In addition, it has been shown that therapies such as massage also have potent stress-reducing properties. Bringing down your stress levels in 2022 may not be easy but your body will thank you for trying. Louise Addison

SERVING UP BRAND NEW TENNIS FACILITIES! Seaford Town Council’s official opening of its three brand new tennis courts at The Salts Recreation Ground on Saturday 21st May 2022 saw a fantastic day and great turn out. The day started with the Town Crier, Peter White, announcing the event in Seaford’s town centre and then shortly afterwards at the courts, where he also acknowledged the part-funders involved: Lewes District Council, Sport England, and the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), the governing body of tennis in Great Britain. The tennis courts were then officially opened by the Mayor of Seaford, Olivia Honeyman, supported by the Young Mayor Erin Franklin and Deputy Young Mayor Nia Waite. Also in attendance were members of the public, a representative from the LTA, Seaford Town Councillors, and Seaford Town Council Officers. Seahaven FM supported the event by kindly loaning their PA system, and broadcasting the event the following day. The courts were free for all to use from 11am to 9pm. Free rackets and tennis balls were also available to borrow to have a knock around. Alongside this, three coaches were on hand, serving up free tennis tips to players. The event was also supported by the nearby Salts Café, who served up a promotion of scones, jam, cream and strawberries.
The day was a great success, attracting a steady stream of players of all ages throughout the day. Mayor and Cllr Honeyman said, ‘It’s been a good morning and great to see people using the courts’. Jemima Lee, LTA’s South East Participation Development Manager said, ‘It is fantastic to see the courts refurbished with the addition of floodlights and gate access system to aid all-year-round play and improve the customer journey to court, and we’re very pleased to be working with Seaford Town Council to develop their park courts and help open tennis up to more local people. Tennis courts in parks play a key role in introducing people to tennis, with around 1.7 million people across Britain playing on park courts in the last 12 months. The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) is committed to promoting tennis and working with Council’s to implement sustainable, low-cost usage models for park tennis courts to ensure they continue to serve as hubs to bring individuals and communities together through tennis’. Booking a court is a straightforward four-step process at: www.clubspark.lta.org.uk/thesaltstennis/Booking. Special thanks for everyone’s support on the day and helping to make this happen. It was a pleasure to see the courts being so busy and well used. The development of the new tennis courts contributes to the achievement of one of the Town Council’s five long-term strategic objectives for the town: to improve and maintain the recreational facilities. Bicentenary of the chalk (and coal) Two hundred years ago in 1822, Jean d’Halloy, a Belgian pioneer geologist and anthropologist, formally proposed that the chalk in France belonged to such a distinct kind of ancient rock with ammonite shells that it should lend its name (in latin, creta) to a new geological division – the Crétacé. In the following decades, the Cretaceous Period of Earth history was also recognised in England, and there is indeed a chalk ammonite at the bottom of Seaford Head (image above). By the turn of the century, our local chalk (image left) was being explored in considerable detail in order to compare with the French chalk and beyond (Seaford Scene February, 2016, issue 106, page 28). With the discovery of the Earth’s natural radioactivity in the last century, we learnt that the Cretaceous was 66 to 145 million years ago, and was longer than the length of time since the Cretaceous Period ended! The Cretaceous proved not all chalky, however, and came to include the clays and sandstones of the Weald, as well as the chalk of the North and South Downs. The clays contain ironstone and the iron grave marker in St Leonard’s Churchyard (image right) is a reminder that South-East England was once the centre of Britain’s iron industry when fuelled by charcoal from the forest. The end was nigh, however, when also in 1822, William Conybeare, West Country curate and lecturer, proposed the ‘Carboniferous Period’, with its focus on coal – which now shifted the industry to the English Midlands. At the same time, he recognized the ‘Weald Clay Formation’
50
(image left) which later became renowned for its dinosaurs and even fossil insects (image below), as well as for making bricks and tiles. In the stone age, the chalk produced another historic raw material – flint, for making tools before metals were known. Next month, we commemorate the Dieppe Raid that was in the summer 80 years ago. Unfortunately, the abundant flint pebbles on the beaches of Dieppe, unlike here, slowed down the advance of our new tanks in support of the infantry. This was not fully anticipated, as our beach pebble supply had been blocked by the Victorian quay building in Newhaven, which had created a new pebble rather than flint-land there instead (image below). Being light in weight, the brown coal (strombolo)
from West Sussex nevertheless still washes up onto the beach at Seaford (image right). As in China today, it was once used for carving and rough-outs for Celtic bracelets,
resembling lost fishing gear, which occasionally still wash up after storms (image left, 20p for scale). No Carboniferous coal has been found in Sussex, unlike in the Midlands, but tradition has it that Mary Mantell came across the Iguanodon in 1822 (first vegetarian dinosaur) – it was a memorable year! WILDFLOWERS, INSECTS AND BATS! What a fantastic spring it has been for Greenhavens, we have enjoyed some fantastic events and connected with lots of people out in the community, enjoying being around nature and all with a passion to preserve our natural world. May saw two fantastic wildflower walk weekends. The first at Riverside Park, Newhaven, where our group loved spotting all the beautiful flowers and insects along the way. We even had members in the group who taught us how to identify birdsong – a fascinating walk. The following weekend we visited The Last Wood and Meadow in Seaford – an abundant area for wildflowers and wildlife where we identified flowers such as Birdsfoot clover, Cranesbill, Scarlett Pimpernel and Yellow Rattle to name a few. We spotted many butterflies: Small Copper, Brown Argus, Large Skippers, and loads of bees and insects. What makes these walks special is that none of us are experts, everyone with various knowledge of the flowers etc but everyone learning, connecting with each other and together committed in our love of nature and the vital role it provides to our planet. These sessions were fun for everyone, and we will be returning to the Last Wood and Meadow to see the orchids at the end of June. Our fantastic Wilder Gardens champions responded to a lady in Peacehaven who wanted her lawn rewilded. Jessie and her Peacehaven Pod spent the day planting in wildflowers and getting the lawn ready and already flowers have started to grow. This will be a fantastic place for pollinators and give joy to the householder as she watches the garden evolve and spring to life. The end of May saw a group of us meeting at Riverside Park, Newhaven to go on a Batwalk. The evening was led by our Jessie Rodriguez, and armed with sonar detection we set off as the sun went down. We loved hearing the amorous Marsh Frogs as we walked along
54
the riverbank and were treated to a glorious sunset with a chorus of birdsong to accompany us. This evening only one Bat was seen and detected but we were in a large group all chatting and enjoying ourselves too much! This was a great evening, and at the time of writing, we have arranged another one on the 17th June at The Meridian Centre, with smaller groups we hope to detect more this time. Our final event in May was the Buglife day with Alice Parfitt. The morning saw her talk all things bugs with an adult group, we then went and applied our newfound knowledge at Riverside Park. I learnt lots about parasitic wasps who lay their eggs in other bees’ abdomens, their larvae grow and eventually kill their unwitting host… A gruesome but rather fantastic way of survival! These findings were recorded on the Fit App and we all learnt loads. The afternoon saw us move over to the Last Wood and Meadow in Seaford. Here we were joined by lots of families, and it was amazing to see the kids catching bees in their pots, identifying them and then letting them go. Fun was had by all and the children enjoyed making dragonflies before returning home. Thank you, Alice, for a fantastic day. Before this gets published we will have had an amazing Wildflower Roof Tour at our AGM, a fantastic Froglife day, learning everything about Amphibians and another Batwalk. Greenhavens Network will have attended the Fish Festival and we will be getting ready for our Big Butterfly Count event with the amazing Dan Danahar on 9th July, starting in the morning at the Peacehaven Community Orchard and moving onto the Castle Hill Nature Reserve in the afternoon. If you want to book and join us please email: contact@greenhavens.network. All events can be found on our Facebook page: Greenhavens Network, do add yourself to keep up to date and check out our website www.greenhavens. network where there is a fountain of information to get your garden wilder, and find all the great groups we have if you fancy getting involved on a project. Please do share any interesting events or photos of all thing’s nature to our Facebook page, we would love to hear from you and see if we can help you in anyway. From all at Greenhavens we hope you have a fantastic July, here’s hoping the sun stays out so we can enjoy all the beautiful nature around us. Miriam Thundercliffe, Greenhavens Coordinator.

Signs a loved one may not be coping at home
Advertising Feature
Nial Joyce of Clifden House Dementia Care Centre, Seaford, looks at some of the warning signs that suggest additional support, in the form of residential care, is needed for a dementia sufferer.
1. Not eating: Many dementia sufferers
display a marked decrease in appetite and a lack of motivation to prepare meals, especially if they live alone. This places them at risk of malnutrition that, even in its mildest form, impairs the immune system and increases the risk of infections. In a specialist care setting like Clifden House, residents are provided with nutritious, home-cooked meals to ensure their dietary needs are met.
2. Decreased self-care: Dementia sufferers often stop paying attention to their own personal needs, such as forgetting to take medication, missing health appointments, not getting dressed and a general decrease in pride in their appearance. This decline in self-care and self-confidence can prompt a withdrawal from the world and isolation.
5. Behavioural changes: These can
be among the most distressing symptoms of the disease. This can include aggression (verbally and physically), agitation, delusions and hallucinations. These can be tricky to manage and professional help is advised.
If you are a carer it is important to remember that your needs are as important as those of the dementia sufferer. If you are struggling to cope with the emotional and physical demands of your role then it may be time to consider residential care.
3. Home safety: While adaptations to the
This decision is often reached following a crisis such as a fall or medical emergency. Depending on the severity, dementia sufferers may go into a dementia care home, such as Clifden House, as a crisis admission for respite care prior to a decision being made regarding their long-term needs.
4. Wandering: Dementia can reduce a

Royalty in Seaford
The Platinum Jubilee of our Queen led us to search our archives to see what connections Seaford has had to royalty.
King’s Mead School, one of the many independent boarding schools in Seaford, was where two future kings were educated. Rama X (photo left), controversial King of Thailand and deemed to be the wealthiest monarch in the world, was named ‘Vajiralongkorn Borommachakkrayadisonsantatiwong Thewetthamrongsuboriban Aphikhunuprakanmahittaladunladet Phumiphonnaretwarangkun Kittisirisombunsawangkhawat’ according to Wikipedia. He was educated here in the 1960s prior to going on to Millfield. A couple of years later the future King Muwenda Mutebi II of Buganda joined King’s Mead school. Ronald Edward Frederick Kimera Muwenda Mutebi II born 13th April 1955 and often called King Ronnie (photo right). He went on to Magdalene College, Cambridge. with his wife Sophie and their daughter on Seaford beach in 1905. The photo above was taken by Princess Victoria. Although Queen Elizabeth has never visited Seaford, Newhaven was fortunate enough to have a visit from the Queen 60 years ago, in 1962. More recently, in 2013, the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh visited East Sussex. They started by visiting the fisheries in Newhaven then on to Harvey’s Brewery in Lewes. It is probable that the main reason for the visit was the opening of the new East Sussex Record Office, The Keep, in Falmer on 31st October that year. This world class centre for archives nestles in the shadow of the Amex football stadium and is open to all (see their website for details). Here in Seaford the only British Royal family recorded royal stay was Edward VII who stayed at The Esplanade Hotel in 1905 and we will cover the Esplanade and his visit in a later edition. Since 1905, the only royal visit to Seaford was by George V and Queen Mary in 1935. They were staying in Eastbourne and came over to visit one of their godchildren, who happened to be a pupil at King’s Mead school. Unfortunately it seems they failed to phone ahead as the pupil in question was away on a school outing. It was reported that they did not stay around and headed back to Eastbourne! Thus ends our rather minimal record of royal visits. They don’t know what they’re missing!

East Blatchington Lectures
Bible story
She has become a well-known figure in and around Seaford in the last three years, particularly now as chairman of Seaford for Ukraine, the town’s inspiring campaign to aid refugees from the region, with local church, community, and council leaders combining to offer support. The Rev Arwen Folkes is Rector of St Peter’s in Seaford and St Andrew’s in Bishopstone, and this month she will be giving the latest in the series of East Blatchington Lectures. Her subject will be a topic very close to her heart – the Bible. In particular, how the book all of us have heard about, even if very few of us have read it all, came to be in English. After all, it is one of the world’s most published books, with estimated total sales of over five billion copies, yet the first complete English version didn’t appear until 1382. How that happened, and the striking effect it immediately had, makes for a fascinating story whether you are a believer or not. Arwen is well suited to tell it, a story that should intrigue everyone. All are welcome to the lecture on Tuesday 5th July at St Peter’s in Belgrave Road, starting at 2.30pm. Tickets are £7, including tea and cakes, and it’s best to book ahead. To book, call 01323 899054 or email officeebb.benefice@gmail.com. SEAFORD AFTERNOON FLOWER CLUB At our meeting on 21st July we will be welcoming our friendly local florists from Ambers who will be demonstrating a range of floral designs for us. It is always a pleasure to welcome them back and we are sure we will have an entertaining and enjoyable afternoon. Our competition is entitled Fun with Flowers which will certainly give our arrangers plenty of scope. At our meeting in May, Susan Tausig demonstrated Scrumptiously Summer and we were treated to a wonderful display of seasonal arrangements. Our competition was entitled Green as Grass (see photos of some of the entries above and right). This was a challenging theme but our members have made it seem easy, as usual.
Looking ahead, at our meeting on 18th August we will be holding our AGM. This will be followed by an instructive class entitled What Not To Do, which will highlight common mistakes in flower arranging and how to rectify them. Our competition will be entitled Summer Holiday. We meet at the Baptist Church Hall in Belgrave Road, Seaford, BN25 2EE on the third Thursday of each month (except January) at 1.30pm. Our fees for this year are £30 and visitors are always very welcome at £5 on the door which includes refreshments. Contact Mary Morris on 01323 893899 or Sue Ward on 01323 894848 for further details.

Are you struggling to lock your UPVC door? Try this simple 3 point test to see if your door needs adjusting before it breaks... With one hand... 1. Push the door closed 2. Lift the handle and let go 3. Turn the key
Business as usual, but from a safe distance
If you can’t do the above easily and have to hold the handle or force the handle to turn the key, then you need to get your door adjusted before it breaks. The weight of the door on a badly adjusted locking mechanism will eventually break, usually in the locked position!

A Good Read
Hamnet
by Maggie O’Farrell This novel is the fictional retelling of the life of Anne Hathaway, who was married to William Shakespeare. The bard is never actually named in the book, which forces us to concentrate on Anne. Shakespeare left no documentation about his personal life: if he wrote diaries, they are lost. This leaves O’Farrell free to use her imagination within an historical context.
• •
• •
Agnes – pronounced ‘Anyis,’ also known as Anne, is a farmer’s daughter, who is married for love to a younger man with few obvious prospects. She is a gifted herbalist with psychic abilities, whose confidence and self-assuredness marks her out among women of her time. He is the son of a bully, with a love of the intricacies of language and a penchant for wordy puns. They certainly make an unusual couple. O’Farrell’s novel comprises of a series of interwoven short stories, centring on each of the characters. Some of the earlier stories involve Anne’s extended family of in-laws, with whom the couple live following her first pregnancy, and her arrangements for her husband to seek his fortunes in London, while she’s pregnant with twins. In spite of their separation, the couple remain close until one of the twins, Hamnet, dies aged 11. The stories then centre on their shared grief and the strain this puts on their relationship, which culminates in him publishing his most famous tragedy, Hamlet. O’Farrell writes beautifully, and if you like attention to historical detail coupled with elegant storytelling then you’ll love this book. If you prefer a spare, more fluid style of writing then you might find the going a little slow. O’Farrell also adopts the trend of writing women from history as possessing contemporary traits. I didn’t find this an issue, but I can imagine purists wondering if Anne really would have been quite as liberated as she’s written here. A wonderful read for history-lovers with a satisfying ending. On the Verge – Every moment counts Volunteers at On the Verge have been busy again this month, trying to get the message out about bringing nature back to our town. Thanks go to the tireless volunteers who have been visiting local schools, where children have been delighted to get their hands dirty making seed bombs (photo above at Seaford Primary School), planting trees and wild flowers, and playing games to learn all about bees and pollination! These days children have less freedom to explore the natural world for themselves, so its so important to encourage them. Hopefully they will then grow to appreciate it, and want to protect it for future generations.
Every flower
More volunteers have been out monitoring our green spaces, and it’s wonderful to watch flowers and wildlife emerging. It seems there is something new every day I walk past my nearest fields. On the Verge volunteers recently had a lovely picnic meet-up in the Salts. The families that came along helped to count flowers in metre-square quadrats. Based on that sample, the Plantlife calculations showed that a bumblebee could fly for 70 hours with the flowers blooming there. Imagine then how many bees we could maintain in all the green spaces and gardens in the town! The Martello Fields are thriving, with both meadow areas and shorter grass, which is working really well for both people and wildlife. Our observers have spotted bees, hoverflies, moths, beetles, ladybirds and grasshoppers. Birds particularly are appreciating the seed heads and insects in the field near Ringmer Road.
76
Pebble trail
We recently visited Seaford Environmental Alliance at the Beacon show launch where enthusiastic visitors started a beautiful new pebble trail with the theme of the natural world. It would be great if people can keep adding to the trail with their own pebble art. While there we noticed a pretty little flower clinging to the edge of the Martello Tower (probably lesser sea spurrey!). It’s amazing what you can spot when you keep an eye out!
Learning together
We all carry on learning throughout our lives. This month I learned, via social media (thanks Mike!) that an insect I photographed two years ago (and again this week) was a Scorpion fly (Panorpa germanica). I also learned it had not been often recorded at this location. It reminded me how important it is to record species if we can (using I-record or similar) so that populations of flowers/insects etc can be monitored.
Precious moments
When we feel so passionately about our cause, we have to be careful not to spend all our time, rushing from one meeting to the next. We need to make time, to stop and smell the roses, listen to the buzz of the bees, and admire the gorgeous flowers of our gardens and wild spaces! These mindful moments are so important for our wellbeing and happiness, that doctors are starting green social prescribing to help with mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety. When we do enjoy a beautiful moment with nature, whether the unfurling of a scarlet poppy in the gutter, hearing a swift overhead, or spotting a rare butterfly, it’s even better to share these moments with other likeminded people who will appreciate them.
Renaturing Seaford project
This is why we are about to launch a new project. Renaturing Seaford is a new communication channel about bringing more nature to Seaford. This includes a Facebook page, email newsletter and website for Seaford groups and naturalists of all ages and abilities. This will help support and strengthen our community and ensure that all our observations count on our Renaturing Seaford journey! Please join in! Every moment shared counts! https://www.facebook.com/groups/renaturingseaford (Watch out for our website and newsletter very soon!)

AN Ocean adventure! We’re a team of three Dads based out of Seaford and Newhaven who have signed up to The World’s Toughest Row, The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge which starts on 12th December 2022. With a combined age of over 150, we’re aiming to show people that the perception of a pipe and slippers life and ‘middle-aged spread’ is not mandatory. We’re raising funds for two charities close to our hearts: Wolo Foundation, a Seaford charity that supports families of those suffering from cancer, and Prostate Cancer UK. The challenge is to row 3,000 miles unsupported from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua in the Caribbean. We’ll be aiming to do it 40-45 days and nights, rowing a gruelling shift pattern of two hours on, one hour off, nonstop until we hit Antigua, with temperatures regularly between 30–40ºC. Food will be consumed through rehydrated food packs, snack bars and hopefully the occasional fish we can catch. Water is provided by a solar powered desalination unit that converts sea water to drinking water. Each crew member will consume between 6,000 and 8,000 calories per day, with many rowers typically losing 1lb of body weight per day at sea. Our progress has been fantastic so far. Since signing up in the Spring of 2020 we already have two winters’ training behind us. Spring/summer preparations and training are now in full swing since our boat was

Flo – The Spirit of Sussex Freemasonry.
We have been fortunate to have some great early sponsors, who we will continue to publicise throughout our journey. Newhaven Marina and Simpson Marine have also committed to helping us with our boat preparations, and Sussex Sign Company are supporting us with visuals for the boat. Water-based training will continue in Seaford Bay and beyond throughout the summer of 2022, and will include long rows of up to 72 hours. Our intention is to fully engage with the local and regional communities as much as possible and are happy to take part in events and interviews. We already have multiple schools and college bookings where we will be speaking to students about the boat, the challenge and the ocean. If you know of anyone who can help raise awareness or provide support in any way it would be greatly appreciated. St Leonard’s Living Churchyard
The Church of England in partnership with A Rocha (ARUK) has created the Eco Church award scheme that includes the Living Churchyard campaign. Churchyards are where we bury our dead, come to grieve, pay our respects and reflect on our own mortality so the very idea of Living Churchyards may at first seem incongruous. Witnessed by the architecture of centuries, churchyards carry stories of place and space, both sacred and secular, with meaning and memory of a profound cultural history and heritage. Amidst the noise and haste they are also a peaceful oasis for natural history. We are invited to slow down, bearing in mind: ‘One who moves too hurriedly misses the way.’ (Proverbs 19.2). We are called to care for God’s Acre with the spirit of service, stewardship and sanctuary for all Gods’ creatures and trust that these teachings may ripple into the world beyond our flint walls. Here at St. Leonard’s we are working in partnership with
Alfriston & Cuckmere Valley Twinning Association
Our July event is the exciting visit to our twin village of Veules-les-Roses. We’ve not had a group visit recently, although some members have made individual trips to see friends there. Being able to visit frequently because Veules-les Roses is so near to us, is a wonderful part of our twinning experience. We can’t wait to see what our hosts have organised for the weekend! Two events are planned for the August Bank Holiday weekend: Quiz Night again (Hooray!) on Friday 26th August and the ACVTA Stall & Games at the Alfriston Fair on Sunday 28th August. Over 70 people enjoyed the lovely atmosphere and had fun at the Jubilee Quiz Night and raffle, with many French-themed prizes. ACVTA is donating to the

the District Council and idverde mowing contractors to develop a management strategy that combines accessibility, aesthetics and biodiversity. By initially focusing on plants and wildflowers we hope to create food and shelter for pollinating insects and other mini beasts. Thanks to its unique history some of the flowers in this ancient grassland, like Wild Clary Sage, Burnet Saxifrage and Chimney Sweeps are not found in many other places in Seaford. The beautiful mosaic of Nature in our churchyard teaches us about the remarkable interconnectedness of all living things such as the Small Copper butterfly laying its eggs on Sorrel or the Common Blue butterfly breeding on Bird’s Foot Trefoil. In June St Leonard’s Church held a Wildlife Hunt as part of the Churches Count on Nature campaign organised by A Rocha and Caring for God’s Acre. Congregations across the country celebrated and recorded churchyard flora and fauna with the results entered into the National Biodiversity Network database. We would like to thank On the Verge and Seaford Natural History Society for their participation. Next time you are walking through St Leonard’s we invite you to take a moment to discover the wildlife in our own Living Churchyard. Photo: Churchyard in bloom by Keith Oldham, On the Verge. Alfriston Emergency Group in appreciation of their work, particularly in preparation for the Jubilee weekend. Twinners also enjoyed the Members’ Afternoon Tea with musical accompaniment, in the garden of two of our committee members. Our French friends have their return visit to Sussex on 16th to 18th September. Membership is free this year – yes! – fees have been waived for everyone in 2022! There’s no need to speak French – our events and visits are planned so everyone can take part if they wish. Our membership secretary is Robert at rmorri1847@aol.com. THE PROBUS CLUB THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF SEAFORD OF ST GEORGE SEAHAVEN BRANCH
Our Ladies’ Lunch at the Hydro, Eastbourne in May was a great success, with over 40 members and partners enjoying an excellent meal, and good companionship.
The speaker at our most recent meeting was Mike Winton, a retired Police Officer. Mike was born in Brighton, his mother a cleaner and his father a painter. The family were not well off, but he had a good childhood, and never lost sight of his background. He did not manage to pass the 11+, and on leaving school he wanted to be a Police Officer, but was not, at the time, tall enough! He managed to get a job in the offices of Southdown Buses, but office work was not for him. Fortunately, he had grown taller, and was taken on as a Police Cadet, and then spent three months at Hendon Police college. The motto at Hendon was that good policing was achieved by ‘the use of tact and good humour’, and Mike used this as the guiding principle for the rest of his career. He was posted to City Road Police Station, in the East End. In those days the only equipment issued to a Police Constable on the beat was a truncheon and a whistle: no radios, only the occasional Police Box to communicate with the station. His duties included crowd control at events like Trooping the Colour and the Boat Race, both often on hot days, which demonstrated how uncomfortable the serge uniform could be. Mike then changed direction by undertaking the Police Driving Course at Hendon and hence joined the Traffic Police. He happened to be in the office on night duty when the Kray Twins were arrested – he was their jailer for the night. He later transferred to Scotland Yard, joining the well-known Flying Squad and undertaking Deportation duties. Mike joined the Special Branch Protection Group, where he provided one-to-one protection for, amongst others, the Israeli Ambassador, the Leader of the Palestinian Liberation Army, and Ian Paisley MP. Mike said that it was important to realise that he was there for the protection of the individual, regardless of their religion, politics or philosophy. His duties did not only include politicians or Political Leaders: at one time he provided protection to Telly Savalas (Kojak), who was the guest of the American Ambassador in London.
The Members of the Seahaven Branch of the Royal Society of St George were deeply saddened to learn of the death of their Chairman, Major Bob Peedle MBE who died on 29th May 2022. Bob had been instrumental in forming the Seahaven Branch in 2010, and under his Chairmanship the Branch has grown in strength from a handful of Members to the present membership. Bob formed a very strong committee, and because of this, the Branch will continue to grow and carry on Bob’s work and the ideals of the Royal Society of St George. He will be sorely missed by the many organisations which have been assisted by the Seahaven Branch of The Royal Society of St George, and also by all his friends and colleagues, and on behalf of everyone we send condolences to his family. After retiring from the police Mike went to private security practice, where his clients included King Hussein of Jordan, Margaret Thatcher, after she left politics, and her son Mark Thatcher. When Mark went to live on South Africa Mike went with him, and also worked for many wealthy families in Cape Town. In summary, Mike looked back at a fascinating and challenging career but said he never forgot his humble origins. For further details of our club please contact our Secretary Gavin on (01323) 893760. Raspberry Swiss Roll Surprisingly easy to make!
Preparation time: 30 mins Cooking time: 10 to 30 mins Serves: 6–8
Ingredients
4 free-range eggs, 115g caster sugar, plus extra to dust (you can also use icing sugar), ½ tsp vanilla bean paste, 75g self-raising flour, 200ml double cream, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 200g whole raspberries For the raspberry jam: 150g caster sugar, ½ lemon, zest and juice, 350g raspberries
Method
Preheat the oven to 190C/170C Fan/Gas 5 and line a 23x33cm/9x13in Swiss roll tin with greaseproof baking paper. Place the eggs, sugar and vanilla paste into a bowl and whisk together until pale, fluffy, and thickened to the consistency of double cream. Sieve the flour into the mixture and carefully fold it in, preserving as much air as possible. Pour the mixture into the lined tin and spread it evenly with the spatula. Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until just firm to the touch.

Place a sheet of baking paper, slightly bigger than the tray, onto a work surface and dust with caster sugar. Turn the sponge out onto the paper, peel off the baking paper on the bottom of the sponge and set aside to cool a little. Pour the double cream and vanilla extract into a large bowl and whip to soft peaks. Make the jam – Heat a pan until hot. Add the sugar, lemon zest and juice, and cook for 3–4 minutes until the sugar has dissolved. Throw in the 350g of raspberries and cook for 3–5 minutes until they break down and thicken. Remove from the heat and set aside to cool. Spread the jam over the sponge, leaving a 2cm gap around the edge. Spread the whipped cream over the top of the jam, then sprinkle over the whole raspberries. Starting with the shortest edge of the sponge and using the baking paper to help (but take care not to roll the paper inside the sponge!), roll the sponge up tightly, making sure the filling stays inside. Keep rolling until the sponge rolls off the baking paper. Dust with extra caster sugar or the icing sugar and cut into slices to serve.

Seaford u3a News The popular monthly coffee morning had an extra attraction on 18th May when a lovely cake, baked by a local baker was given to attendees in celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. It was a large cake decorated with a rice-paper ‘badge’, which soon disappeared to the appreciative members and was quite delicious. Members and non-members are invited to attend the July coffee morning the Con Club, Crouch Lane, Seaford on Wednesday 20th July between 10am and 12 noon. As with all Seaford u3a’s monthly coffee mornings this will be completely free to all and no booking is necessary. Just come along and take part. The coffee morning is the only Seaford u3a event open to non-members and often serves as an introduction for prospective members. The u3a movement celebrates its 40th year in the UK this year and the national organisation, the Third Age Trust, encouraged members to hold a celebratory picnic on 1st June. The members’ magazine Third Age Matters, suggested some very tasty recipes and some members got together in Crouch Gardens with their picnics. Preparations are on-going to start the next u3a year in good style. Membership renewals and a programme for the year will be sent out to all members ready for the start of the membership year on 1st August. A comprehensive programme of groups is being offered on subjects including Art, Music, Science and Technology, Climate Change, table games such as Bridge and Scrabble, and several language groups. There will also be a good range of members’ interests talks taking place at the Downs. Some of the groups will be limited in size because they take place in group leader’s houses but the groups held in various halls will be able to take more members. The Downs talks have ample room for all. Outings continue to be popular – the organiser of the May trip said: ‘Our visit to the Poppy Factory was fascinating and a sombre reminder that one hundred years on from the formation of this inspirational
organisation, nothing has changed. War with its death, mental and physical injury, trauma, destruction and devastation is still present in today’. In 1922, Major George Howson MC had a vision to employ injured veterans returning from The Great War, the “war to end all wars”. He founded the Poppy Factory where veterans started making the iconic poppies for the British Legion. ‘The outing continued to Kew Gardens where members saw the Grade 1 listed architectural glass houses, the Georgian Kew Palace and Queen Charlotte’s cottage. They visited the tranquil manicured Japanese garden with its raked gravel, Minka House and a resident male peacock looking rather bored. Members also walked amongst wild areas, beautifully designed planting, the beautiful Rhododendron Dell and towering redwood trees in the Grove. There was also a huge calming lake, an arboretum with 2,000 species of trees, and dotted around were temples and follies, various places to eat and a wonderful adventure playground for kids.’ For more information about Seaford u3a see the website www.u3asites.org.uk/seaford. SEAFORD ROTARY
Young Voices at the O2
On Monday 25th April 2022, 53 children from the choir at Seaford Primary School travelled to the O2 Arena to join 8,000 other children at a Young Voices massed choir event. What an event it was, with the sound of all those children’s voices performing songs including O Fortuna, medleys from the Lion King and of Beatles’ songs, and the ever-popular Power In Me all interspersed with supporting acts Urban Strides, The Beatbox Collective and solo singers. This was one of 25 Young Voices evenings this year held in Birmingham, Manchester, Sheffield and Wembley, as well as at the O2 Arena. Young Voices was started in 1997, so this year marked its 25th Anniversary. It is an extraordinary task to put this together each year, but is worth it for, as Ben Lewis, CEO of Young Voices says ‘Young Voices has always been about coming together, connecting, celebrating joy and creating those magical memories that leave lasting memories’. Seaford Rotary had received a request from Seaford Primary School to help with the cost of hiring the coaches to take them to the O2 Arena along with children from Chyngton Primary School, which we were pleased to do.

Caravan Cleaning for Children with Cancer Fund
On a very wet Thursday morning we wondered whether it was worth going to St Leonards to clean the Children with Cancer Fund caravan. There had been thunder and lightning overnight and it was still raining heavily at 8am. The forecast, however, looked as though it would clear by mid-morning and since we had already postponed the cleaning operation twice, we decided to go. So, armed with buckets, rags, cleaning materials, brooms and step ladders (for the higher bits) and tea and coffee, past Presidents Martin McGill, Mike Roper, Frank Thompson and Paul Vaesen set forth in two cars to Combe Haven Caravan Park. Children With Cancer Fund is a charity that we have supported over the years. They do a great job in granting wishes for children and the families of children that have been or are suffering from a form of cancer and they have been awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. They have three caravans which they let families use, and we have regularly cleaned one of them, until Covid stopped everything. It is three years since we last cleaned the caravan at Combe Haven, so it required more work than usual this time. We stuck to it, and by 1pm had got it looking pretty good, so we returned home, via a lunch break at The Star at Normans Bay, with the feeling that we’d done a good morning’s work. Seaford Rotary welcomes new members and new Friends of Seaford Rotary. For more information contact us on www.seafordrotary.org.uk. Life in front of the Lens
People and Stories by Andrew Whittuck Following on from his very successful Landscape exhibition last year, Seaford Photographer, Andrew Whittuck will be holding his third exhibition at the Star Brewery Gallery, Lewes which features People and their Stories. The photos this year will include some from the tragic Aberfan Mining Disaster in South Wales. These are very poignant as are those from the project he worked on with Farrukh Dhondy when looking at the effects of Undergraduate Strain on Cambridge Students, some of whom were their friends. The photo story, Maharishi and the Beatles included Mick Jagger and Marianne Faithfull before they all went up to North Wales for a ‘preach in’ with the Yogi – thus launching Transcendental Meditation. Andrew was working as a freelance photo-journalist when, together with Farrukh Dhondy, he covered the story of Pink Flloyd. He was able to take close ups of them in his studio using a tripod as well as their gig lighting. He was therefore able to make very high quality prints which nobody else was able to do. He then went to Abbey Road Studios where he took photos of them as they completed their first album Piper at the Gates of Dawn. One of his photo story collections, based in Dublin, features Irish writer Christy Brown, author of My Left Foot. Other portraits included in this exhibition are Melvin Bragg and family, Kenny Everett and Dave Cash (photo), Helen Mirren in her first film, Antonio Carluccio the chef and many more. You won’t be disappointed! For more information do visit Andrew’s website: https://andrewwhittuck.co.uk/ and the Star Brewery

Recruiting: Trainee Volunteer Advisers
Lewes District Citizens Advice is currently recruiting volunteer advisers for our current mainly digital online advice service. We also have some opportunities in our main Newhaven office for inperson volunteering. Since Covid, we have built up a successful telephone, email and video conference service for local clients. We have also developed a full remote training programme for trainees. If you enjoy helping people, have good communication skills and would like to make a difference to your community, we would love to hear from you. You would benefit from a very thorough training, and would gain broad experience across a number of advice areas, from consumer rights to welfare benefits. You would also join a great team of people who come from all walks of life. Many of our volunteers go on to obtain paid work with the experience they’ve gained, while our retired volunteers are able to give the benefit of their past experience to help the community. We ask that you are willing to commit at least 6 hours a week to us, with some flexibility in hours, and some additional training at times, and that you possess good computer skills. We are keen to recruit from all sections of the community, whatever your background or experience. For further information, please email training@ lewescab.cabnet.org.uk or telephone 01273 007557 and leave a message. We will ring you back to have an informal chat. Gladiolus
t
Fashions come and go, and apparently Gladiolus is back ‘in.’ The tall, colourful flower spikes are ideal for cut flowers, and could be grown in your sunny veg patch if you don’t have space in the borders. Try G Mahler, a strong stemmed variety with purple flowers, or G Evergreen for lime green flowers. Gladiolus species are daintier additions for your border; Gladiolus byzantinus (see pic) will produce vivid magenta flowers in May alongside your alliums and tulips. Gladiolus murielae, Abyssinian gladiolus, is another delicate offering with purple throated fragrant white flowers. This one flowers late summer to autumn. Gladioli corms should be deep planted (15cm) in fertile but well drained soil. If soil is heavy, add grit and plant the corms on a layer of sand. The corms are not fully hardy but they can be left in-situ in the south, protected with a layer of mulch.

Summer is here, but before you are tempted to pull out the sunbed, bear in mind that the Annual Show is just a few weeks away on Saturday 6th August. The venue is Cradle Hill Community Primary School, where we hope to see a mass of entries in all classes. So before you nod off in the shade, check out the sections in your annual programme, then scan your garden and ponder what could achieve peak perfection by the 6th. Some entries don’t require horticultural skills – there’s baking, home-made preserves, photography and arts and crafts, the latter section open to non-members, as is flower arranging. (Non-members can find details of show classes on our website at www.seafordhorti. com). There’s definitely something for everyone, especially the kids, so see you at the Show.
Jobs to do in July
3 For the biggest dahlias (for showing) you need to disbud plants. Take off the two side buds that generally appear on either side of the ‘boss’ bud. 3 Take cuttings of pinks about 3 inches long using non-flowering shoots. Dip in hormone rooting powder and plant around the edge of a pot using 50/50 potting compost and grit. 3 Continue to sow lettuce and radish. If you are quick you can still sow some beetroot, try reliable variety Boltardy.
MEMBERS’ NOTICE BOARD PLEASE TAKE NOTE: Annual Show Saturday 6th August at Cradle Hill Community Primary School, Lexden Road. A change of venue due to the sudden unavailability of Seaford Head School. Gardener’s Question Time on 31st May was a fun evening, with topics including peat free compost and slugs. There was good audience participation and a special Jubilee raffle raised £345 for charity. This month’s offering at St Luke’s Church, Walmer Road, 7pm on Tuesday 26th July, is a ticketed event (£4), with Guest Speaker Tom Hart Dyke. This plant hunter is an entertaining speaker with a vast knowledge of plants. Contact Jan Williams 01323 873675 to secure your place. Another ‘not to be missed’ is the coach trip to NT – Polesdon Lacey on Thursday 8th September. Only £18 if you are National Trust Member, contact Pippa Logan 01323 491566, before they sell out.

The Hobby
Recently I’ve spent a lot of time on the beautiful West Sussex heaths, where I’ve been lucky to encounter an animal which always gets my heart beating as it speeds past; the Hobby. Around about now, high in a twiggy tree-top nest, two eggs will be laid. The proud parents have flown all the way from the Congo Basin to raise their family in the Sussex countryside. Hobbies look debonair and dashing. With their black ‘eye mask’ and drooping ‘moustache’ there’s a touch of Zorro about them. And, like that enigmatic swordsman, Hobbies are famed for their speed and dexterity. Superficially the Hobby looks similar to the Peregrine, which along with the Kestrel makes up the trio of falcons that breed in Sussex. But Peregrines are very different birds. They started raising their families way back in April and adult Peregrines are up to four times

heavier than a Hobby. Peregrines hunt by putting their weight behind their attack, whereas Hobbies use aerial agility and acceleration; the ninja to the Peregrine’s sumo. The Hobby’s slender scimitar wings slice the air as they twist, turn and tumble to pluck their victims from the sky in their talons. These victims are the reason for the Hobby’s 4,000-mile journey from Africa, and for their late egg laying. The birth of the hungry Hobby chicks is perfectly synchronised with their food supply, which is most abundant in Sussex skies in July and August. Hobbies specialise in catching the uncatchable; swallows, martins, swifts and dragonflies – all accomplished aviators themselves, who probably thought they were invincible whilst airborne. Watching a Hobby hunting is watching an accomplished predator at work. If you’ve been on a wildlife walk with me you’ve probably already heard my favourite piece of Hobby trivia. In 1946 Mr Adolph of Langton Green, Kent had an idea. Presumably, with a name like that, the preceding seven years had been a tough time for Mr Adolph, but now he was free to unleash his incredible invention upon the world; a game which involved flicking wobbly model footballers up and down a tabletop. This game, he insisted, would be a great hobby for boys and he named his invention just that: Hobby. But when it came to registering the name, the Patents Office said that ‘Hobby’ was too general a term. Instead, Mr Adolph took the scientific name from his favourite falcon. And so the agile Hobby (Falco subbuteo) became forever linked to wet Saturday afternoons flicking headless Crystal Palace midfielders around the dining room. The photos on this page were taken the day before celebrations marking the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee began, and in the beds and on the paths the community spirit that this event engendered was working its magic. Not only were flowers glowing like jewels in the sunshine and vegetables massing upwards, but volunteers and visitors were feeling the joy of being in a beautiful, purposeful garden. To crown it all, our amazing space in the Crouch personified community. In the past few weeks alone Seaford Community Garden has by arrangement hosted little people from Charlie Bears nursery, who have become frequent visitors learning about horticulture by doing it, sowing and planting in our special children’s garden, using their own tools. The Strengthening English Group of people living in the town and nearby area whose first language is not English, have visited to use the garden experience as a way of toning up and improving their vocabulary and use of idiom, as volunteer Lesley put it, ‘chatting while gardening,’ and planting nasturtiums after a guided tour. Volunteer Dave added: ‘It really was a very pleasant morning. One young man is coming with a friend as a volunteer. And they are all very keen to visit again.’ A local group which is supporting guests from Ukraine is also being approached to see if they would enjoy a visit to the garden. And then there are the Open Garden days when our plants are dressed overall in their best colours and, to allude to one particular tree, in full fig. June’s National
110
Gardens Scheme, was a huge success, attracting 111 people through our tall gates and raising £183 in entry fees for NGS charities. Macmillan will benefit from the next charity opening on Saturday 23rd July when produce will be further forward and later-flowering plants will be at their best. And don’t forget that Seaford Community Garden opens on Saturday mornings too, 10am until noon, from 2nd July onwards. Visitors who haven’t had time to come in recently may notice that the flower beds are even fuller than before, allowing insects the best chance to pollinate. June featured a riot of plants from royal purple geraniums to roses in colours from regal red to palest cream, with apricots and yellows in between, while the broad beans were ripe for picking and peas were displaying their first white blossoms to promise a good harvest ahead. So please come and see for yourselves any Wednesday morning from 9.30am to 12.30pm, or on Saturday mornings during the rest of the summer to early autumn when the sales table should be groaning with fruit and veg. And don’t forget to pick up choice plants from a huge variety for sale just inside the gate, all very reasonably priced and segregrated into planting locations from sun to shade. The Garden Team Photos from top: Beth harvests broad beans; Can anyone name this beauty?; Yellow irises flourish around the wildlife pond edges; Foxgloves in the children’s garden; Geraniums proliferate; Charlie and his grandmother Lesley at work; Tree echiums tower into a blue sky.

Observing Seaford promenade’s dog ban by-law from 1st May – 30th September. Seaford is well known for its attractive and unspoiled seafront. The beach is enjoyed by visitors all year round but in particular during the warmer weather and summer season. In order to ensure the comfort and ease of all beach users, a dog ban by-law was put in place from 1st May to 30th September on certain parts of the seafront. Seaford Town Council would like to remind all dog walkers visiting the seafront to please take care in observing the dog ban areas, which differ for the promenade and beach itself, and are in effect from Frankie’s Beach Café leading west to the start of Bönningstedt Promenade.
There are signs along the promenade displaying the designated areas either for Dogs on Leads or No Dogs Allowed. Dog owners are also reminded to please pick up after your pets; this allows all users to enjoy the beach safely. To report an issue with dog fouling or breaches of the by-law, please inform Lewes District Council’s Neighbourhood First team online at: https://www. lewes-eastbourne.gov.uk/environmental-problems/ neighbourhood-first/ or report it through the District Council’s Report It smartphone app.
Please also clean up your dog waste in ALL areas of Seaford and surrounding areas. Thank you.
