Welcome to Andrea Hargreaves’ rundown of arts and cultural events coming up in Seaford this month. Be aware that events could be affected by Covid rule changes announced after the time of writing

Cinema

At the Barn Theatre, Seaford Community Cinema is screening Cruella (12) on Friday 4th March at 7.30pm. Marking International Women’s Day, this manic black comedy pits crazy Estella Miller (Emma Stone) against her fearsome mentor, played by Emma Thompson as Estella stops at nothing to develop her Cruella de Vil line. Next up, on Sunday 13th March at 2.30pm, is Jungle Cruise (12), a fantasy adventure involving a female scientist (Emily Blunt) on a mission to Brazil to find a tree whose flowers cure illness, heal wounds and lift curses, plus Spanish conquistadores and a dodgy boat skipper. Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Coleman both won Oscars for their roles in The Father (12), with Hopkins giving a devastating performance as an elderly man suffering dementia. See it on Friday 18th March at 7.30pm. The cinema’s spring season should have been closing on Friday 1st April at 7.30pm with Daniel Craig’s final Bond outing in No Time to Die (12A) but on Saturday 2nd April at 7.30pm it will also be showing the rescheduled Gala event for The Youth Counselling Project, In the Heights (U), see page 70. Apart from the Gala tickets are £6 members, £7 non members, £4 18s and under from the Tourist Information Office in Church Street, from seafordcinema.org or on the door.

Seaford Little Theatre is staging Noel Coward’s Private Lives from Friday 4th March until Saturday 12th March at 7.45pm with matinée only on Saturday 5th March at 2.30pm, seats £9 and £8, from Ticketsource. Directed by Mike Truman, passion, laughter, romance, anger and love set the stage for a battle of the sexes as a divorced couple find themselves unwittingly thrown together in this classic 1930s’ comedy of manners.

Charity quiz

Air your general knowledge and help raise money for The Youth Counselling Project by forming a team of up to eight people to answer Peter Linsdell’s fiendish quiz questions on Tuesday 8th March, 7.30 for 8pm. Tickets £5 each on the evening.

SEAFORD ROTARY

Seaford Rotary is 75 years Young

Towards the end of 1946 a group of Seaford businessmen met for lunch in a small upstairs room at Granny’s Tea Shop in Clinton Place, now Olliver’s Restaurant. Amongst them was Stanley Blomfield, a past member of Hove Rotary Club and two Rotarians from the Brighton Club, Alfred Gardner and Harry Symes. Their meeting was to discuss the possibility of forming a Rotary Club in Seaford. These informal lunches continued each week until numbers had increased to 24, when it was decided that things should be taken a step further. As a result, 75 years ago, on 7th February 1947 the inaugural meeting of Rotary Club of Seaford was held at the Dorothy Café in High Street. The first meeting of the Council of the Interim Rotary Club of Seaford followed four days later. Now 75 years on Seaford Rotary is still going strong with 38 members supported by over 100 Friends,

Business Partners and volunteers; Santa’s sleigh in December and Boot, Craft and Produce Fairs on Martello Fields on the first Sunday of the summer months raising money for charitable causes; donating to charitable organisations and those who are less fortunate; carrying out community work such as supporting Seahaven Foodbank; helping young persons in the town with donations for school and club activities and equipment, and all the time supporting the fight to eradicate Polio. Donation to Guide Dogs for the Blind Last March whilst the country was in lockdown due to the Covid pandemic, a talk was given remotely via Zoom to Seaford Rotary by Mick Etheridge and Pam Byrne from The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association, known under its working title as Guide Dogs.

After the presentation, it was agreed that the club would make a donation to support this charity, and that this should be done in person once the lockdown was over, and it was possible to meet again face to face. Thus, on 12th January, both Mick Etheridge accompanied by his guide dog Onyx and Pam Byrne accompanied by her guide dog Poppy attended the lunchtime meeting when the donation was formerly handed to them. Their two guide dogs sat obediently whilst lunch was served. After lunch the donation cheque was presented by Vice President Ann Reed. Seaford Photographic Society January’s meetings were all Zoom-only, starting with two set-subject competitions; People Portraits and Triptych. Our judge for the evening was Darren Pullman CPAGB EFIAP BPE3*. A triptych is made up of three images, either separate photos or one photo divided into three. Anna-Marie Armstrong took the winner’s trophy with her stunning The Three Faces of a Kite (photo below),

another fine example of nature photography, for which the club is getting something of a reputation. Janice Hewitt took 2nd place and Simon Rigby 3rd. In the People Portraits competition first place went to Thelma Long’s In Blue, (photo right), with Simon Watkins and Colin Mitchell taking 2nd and 3rd respectively. Next up was the Marrutt Trophy, the annual inter-club battle with our nearest neighbours, Seven Sisters Camera Club. Seaford was hosting the meeting as they were the current holders of the trophy. Around fifteen members joined us from Seven Sisters, with a similar number from Seaford, and the judging was carried out by Andy Smith LRPS, a regular visitor to both clubs. By the half time break Seven Sisters was very slightly ahead with 176 to Seaford’s 171, so it was going to be an exciting second half. The scores for the second part of the evening were Seven Sisters 178 and Seaford…178! So Seven Sisters maintained their 5-point lead for a 354 to 349 finish, the closest result for many years. It was a fun evening and Andy Smith commented afterwards, ‘I thoroughly enjoyed the

competition. As ever, a warm welcome from Seaford and many great images’. Well done to Seven Sisters for their win and we look forward to them hosting next year’s event. We usually have a print league competition but, because of the Covid limitations, it

has been impractical again this season, so we had a second PDI league starting in January. Round one was judged by Peter Fry ARPS DPAGB BPE4* on Zoom from his home in Barnstable. Peter had particular praise for those images where the photographer had obviously thought seriously about the composition and taken time to work out where to stand to take a photo with maximum impact. In the standard group Martin Brewer scored a 20/20 for his black and white custom car shot (photo top). Chris Dawson’s minimalist monochrome (photo above) and Colin Mitchell’s tawny owl, taking off (photo right) scored the only 20s in the advanced group. For the last meeting of the month we welcomed Andy Phillips to give his talk on ‘The Inner Landscape’. This excellent lecture was about creating beautiful still life images using just natural light and no expensive equipment. There was lots of detailed advice on everything from the practicalities of setting up to final post-processing. We also appreciated being shown some of Andy’s wonderful landscapes, with lots of advice on how to create an image with impact. The Growing Project at the Downs Leisure Centre

Exciting news! Plans to create a community garden and orchard at the Downs Leisure Centre have been approved by Lewes District Council. The Growing Project is a three-year strategy developed by the Friends of Sutton Downs and involving the local community in making space for nature.

Our health is inextricably linked to nature – diversity of wildlife is essential for the water we drink, air we breathe and food we eat. The UK’s natural biodiversity is in dramatic decline, with ecosystems that support us becoming increasingly fragile. Loss of nature is not only a disaster for animals and plants, but for humans too. We need to change this, and with urgent conservation action we can! Urban gardens and community greenspaces have a lot of potential to support nature and wildlife, and the Downs is no exception. As part of The Growing Project the council will seed wildflower areas to encourage

biodiversity and mow paths for people to enjoy walks around the grounds. Earlier this winter, together with Trees for Seaford, we planted seven trees in the car park verges that, left uncut, will permit the flora and fauna to thrive undisturbed.

How we produce and consume food is a major climate issue. Industrial agriculture is a cause of habitat destruction and species decline, and sustaining global supply chains has a huge carbon footprint. The UK imports around £8 billion of fruit and vegetables each year whilst studies suggest allotments and community gardens can play an important role in meeting that demand at a local scale. The community garden and orchard at the Downs presents our community with an opportunity to grow and enjoy seasonal, organic fruit, vegetables and herbs, nurturing nature and ourselves in years to come. It’s said that ‘gardening adds years to your life and life to your years’, and as the pandemic exacts a toll on physical and mental health, and the cost-of-living crisis begins to bite, the potential health and economic gains of community food growing may have even greater value and importance for us. Improving the ecology of our town and its green spaces looks like a win-win - we need nature in our neighbourhood and nature needs these spaces. We are looking for people who can help bring this project to life. Nuthatch: the bird table buccaneer Back garden birdwatchers know there’s a pecking order on the peanut feeder. Coal Tits are elbowed out by Blue Tits who in turn are ousted by Great Tits. But when the Nuthatch shows up, everything scarpers. With its streamlined body, blue back, pink chest and black eye-stripe, the Nuthatch cuts a dynamic figure; a swashbuckling, bird table buccaneer. The weapon it wields is a stout, dagger-like beak, but it’s not designed for skewering birds. Nuthatches are nuts about nuts.

The Nuthatch’s name comes from ‘nut hacker’ in reference to the bird’s habit of jamming hazelnuts and acorns into tree crevices and then using its powerful bill to noisily smash them open. There’s an old Sussex name which fits this manic, intense bird perfectly: Nutjobber. I have never seen this nutty little bird sitting still. They’re so crazy about climbing that they’re the

only British bird that can actually climb headfirst down a tree. At this time of year our garden birds become more vocal and aggressive as they claim and defend territories, and croon their tunes to attract a mate. Spring lacks this urgency for the male Nuthatch. He hasn’t stopped fighting all winter as he angrily defends his hectare of woodland. Nuthatches are monogamous too and the loyal pair soon dispense with spring serenades and get down to the hard work of making a home. Many birds start from scratch. Twigs and moss are laboriously collected and nests are painstakingly woven. Nuthatches however are happy to let someone else undertake the heavy construction work. Their residence of choice is a spacious tree cavity drilled and abandoned by a woodpecker. Sure, it needs a bit of work but the Nuthatches will make do and mend. The main problem is the front door. It’s too big. This gaping hole can let in predators or Starling squatters who will happily turf out nesting Nuthatches. So while the male keeps guard, the female Nuthatch starts bricking up the entrance hole. Her bill is used like a plasterer’s trowel to smear mouthfuls of mud until the terracotta porch is perfectly Nuthatch sized. She is a compulsive builder, and if they move into a nestbox she still cannot resist plastering mud around the hole, even if it’s already the right size. And it’s great to report on a bird that’s actually increasing in number and range. Once restricted to south-east England, the Nuthatch now breeds in Scotland – probably assisted by the provision of garden peanut feeders as it marched north. And as Britain seemingly gets crazier by the day it’s nice to know there’s still space for a few more Nutjobbers. UNO22 THREE: An Uplifting New Display for Spring at Seaford’s New Gallery Gallery Uno, 14 High Street, Seaford BN25 1PG Open Daily: Mon – Sat 10am – 4pm, Weds 10am – 1pm, closed Sun. From Thursday 3rd March until Tuesday 29th March. Winter will soon be banished to memory at Gallery Uno when Seaford’s new art gallery presents their third exhibition of 2022. As we approach springtime UNO22: THREE will lift the heart and will be a treat to the eyes. There will be indeed some wonderful things on display that make thoughtful and original gifts or something to enhance your home, and if you are so tempted a purchase would not break the bank. As with every UNO and Sussex Arts Collective exhibition the guiding principle is to bring to the forefront the fantastic talent and diversity of artists, designers and craftspeople working in our highly inspirational county. No more so than our next artist under the spotlight, Ian O’Halloran, who will be exhibiting during UNO22: THREE.

IAN OHALLORAN – Printmaker

Ian describes himself as an Artist, Gardener and Musician; more or less in that order. He followed an unconventional route into the Arts; he didn’t grow up having a passion to draw and paint. On leaving school he went to Hastings’s College to study Building and Construction. From there he went on to train as a Civil Engineer for East Sussex County Council in the Highways Department. Eleven years on, he decided that the world didn’t need any more roads and bridges and realised that he needed to do something more creative with his life. Aged 29, he abandoned a perfectly good career and enrolled at Eastbourne College to study Art and Design. He had always been inspired by the English landscape and the work by artists who portray it especially Paul Nash and Eric Ravilious. He is particularly drawn to

landscape that he considers as ‘ancient’ those of myth and legend; ones that tells a story. As a result he often includes standing stones, dolmen, chalk hill figures and trackways in his work. Although his work is based on actual locations, he doesn’t try to depict a true representation. Instead he conveys a feeling of what it is like to be there by using colour to evoke an emotional response in the viewer. Having studied painting at Eastbourne College he had several successful one-man shows of his oil paintings in the early 2000s. Around 2008 Ian started exploring printmaking techniques, particularly multi-block lino print, and this now forms the main part of his artistic output. Each intricate design is painstakingly printed one colour at a time from several carved blocks. Subsequently each edition is strictly limited. In 2013 his print Dartmoor Oak was selected to be part of The Artist of the Year show sponsored by The Artists and Illustrators Magazine at the Mall Galleries, and in 2016 he was commissioned to create a print for the cover for Mary Ann Ochota’s book Hidden Histories: A Spotters Guide to the British Landscape. In 1994 Ian and his wife moved to their current property to embark on a life’s work transforming a 5-acre field into what he calls a garden smallholding for self-sufficiency and wildlife. www.morethanjustagarden. co.uk. Meeching Amateur Dramatics

HAGGARD

For their next production, Meeching Amateur Dramatics (MAD) will be taking you back to the Regency Period, a colourful and turbulent time in our history. Set in the 18th century, ‘Haggard’ tells the story of Squire Amos Haggard, constantly hard up, lecherous, dishonest and drunk, conceived and brought to life by Eric Chappell of Rising Damp fame. Haggard is assisted by Grunge, his hapless but loyal servant; and his son Roderick, both of whom are always drawn into Haggard’s schemes. The three of them blunder their way through a series of misadventures including a wedding, a brush with pirates, a duel, and the plague! With its parallel to Blackadder, this comedy moves along at a fast pace. MAD will be staging this production at Meeching Hall, Fort Road, Newhaven on four consecutive days: Thursday 31st March, Friday 1st April, and Saturday 2nd April, all at 7.45pm and a matinée on Sunday 3rd April at 2.30pm. bishopstone station crowdfund appeal

Bishopstone Station was built in 1938 to accommodate a new housing estate which was shelved due to the onset of the Second World War. The building was then used for military purposes due to its proximity and gun emplacements were built. This is the only railway station building with gun turrets in the UK. In later years the building has deteriorated and a group of residents formed Friends of Bishopstone Station and adopted the station through the Sussex Community Rail partnership scheme. We are a passionate group and our main aim is to restore this unique Grade 2 listed building back to its Art Deco glory. We now have planning approval and listed building consent. Phase 1 is to raise funds

to renovate the rundown former general store, which was once the old parcels office, to create a community hub for local people to use. We want to turn this area into a much-needed space to be used by various community groups who are desperate for a venue. This will also include a drop-in centre for a variety of needs. The money raised will pay for a new kitchen area, plumbing, electrics and appliances, hot water facility, broadband and USB ports, new foyer doorway and access for disabled people and those with mobility issues plus a new multi purpose unisex toilet. Until these works are done we don’t have a useable community space. We have just published and started a Crowdfunding UK page under: Friends of Bishopstone Station Community Hub. Prune roses to give a good shape for the summer. Cut dogwood, willows, continues down to the base to promote vigorous new growth. Tidy up alpines, cutting off dead foliage and top up with grit. Continue dead-heading winter bedding like pansies to promote new growth.

Sow: l

Sow hardy annuals e.g. poppies and nasturtium outside. Sow other annuals and veg seeds indoors or in a cool greenhouse. If you didn’t sow sweet peas in the autumn sow a batch now.

Plant: l

Plant lilies and other summer flowering bulbs in pots or in the ground. Think about planting some annual climbers for that extra splash of colour. Sweet pea, Ipomoea lobata (Spanish flag), Cobaea scandens (cup and saucer vine), Rudbekia hirta (black-eyed Susan). Plant a herb garden in a pot outside the back door, useful and pretty. Parsley, mint, sage and thyme make a nice combination. Don’t be tempted to plant annuals from garden centres outside until all risk of frost has gone!

Ericaceous plants in pots e.g. Camellia, Rhododendron, Azalea, will respond well to a suitable feed. Feed roses. Add fertiliser if reusing soil/compost in pots for summer bedding. Mulch and fertilise beds.

growing here, courgettes, onions, garlic and tomatoes.’ As regular readers will know, elevenses is an important feature of life in our garden at the Crouch of a Wednesday mid-morning. It’s a time when tools are laid down for 20 minutes or so, aching muscles are rested and chilly hands encircle warming mugs of coffee or tea. There may even be a biscuit or too, or even a cake if a volunteer has a birthday. For some months now beverage-maker-in-chief Veronica has been using a smart set of gas burners to get the vast kettle boiled, but washing up had to be done in a too-small plastic bowl. Not any more: no sooner had someone wistfully said: ‘If only we had a sink’ than, hey presto! Brian and Val conjured one up, complete with drainer, and set it into a unit constructed from pallets. Ingeniously, the design also incorporates ‘umbrella stand’ slots to keep bamboo sticks upright and tidy. Plumbing consists of a hose, with a bucket under the sink, but at least the collected water won’t be wasted. Oh, it’s all mod cons here! Some of those looking forward to a warm-up in the polytunnel at the beginning of February were busy volunteers including Amy, whom Katie was showing how to divide and repot snowdrops, Neill was busy hoeing a raised vegetable bed and James tending strawberry plants, some under cloches and some in open soil. Elsewhere more strawberries are bordering young garlic – we also have elephant garlic – and broad beans are romping up under their protection of netting. A bed inside the polytunnel has been cleared ready to take tomato seedlings much later on. Katie again: ‘We’ll have all the ingredients for ratatouille

The garden obviously impressed Di Morton from Bishopstone. When her parents Mike and Beryl Trott were about to downsize from their garden in Woodingdean, they made a present of a mass of pots and plants from their former garden, including nerines which have now been potted up, chrysanthemums, salvias and other outdoor and indoor house plants. As a grateful daughter Di observed: ‘As one garden comes to an end so another flourishes.’ So, Veronica has got her sink and hopefully persuaded some volunteers to do the washing up, but there’s still another want, a bicycle rack. Beth is ready to look into the possibility of providing one outside the garden gates, that could be used by any visitors to the Crouch Gardens – to the football field, playground and of course the Community Garden. Thinking about it, our garden is a great example of selfsufficiency, re-cycling and ‘green’ growth, but don’t let us just blow our own trumpets – come in and see for yourselves. in June and July but there is still plenty of interest in April. We will be serving afternoon teas and have created two new seating areas in amongst the flower beds. All our public openings this year are in aid of the National Garden Scheme (the NGS supports nursing and healthcare charities). We will also run plant sales throughout the spring and summer with proceeds supporting Stay Up Late. This year we will be able to offer a card reader for plant and other sales.

We are delighted that following the first and very successful opening of our Spring Garden last year, we are doing it again in 2022. There are lots new tulip bulbs planted around the garden and if the weather is good they will hopefully be blooming. We have just completed Phase 2 of our garden makeover, and hope returning visitors will like what we have done and new visitors will enjoy the experience. Some old favourites like Sweet Peas, Roses and Succulents remain, but do come and see what we have planted in the drought/gravel bed, and the new tropical bed – these will be at the peak of flowering

Seaford Musical Theatre

Lights, Action, Musicals!

After two years in the dark, Seaford Musical Theatre erupted in a blaze of razzle-dazzle with Lights, Action, Musicals filling the Barn Theatre with vitality and fizzing energy. And it was so good to have this group back with even more bounce and ingenuity than ever. The success of the show was largely due to the energy of its director Kate Long, who not only had her large cast not missing a theatrical trick as they sang and danced their way through numbers relating to a storyline that brings a group of women to New York and Hollywood with stardom in their eyes. The first act served out a dollop of cynicism, and then in the second demonstrated success by reprising filmed musicals in the glitzy world of MGM over 30 years from the 1940s to the 1970s, from Somewhere over the Rainbow to The Age of Aquarius via The Lambeth Walk. And oh yes, as Darrell Grey sang, it was loverly.

Thanks to teamwork between Long, musical director Russell Taylor, some brilliant choreography by Donna Bull and dance captain Luisa DeLuca – how she kept everyone on that small stage without anyone falling off I’ll never know – the continuous links between scenes and numbers were virtually seamless. I particularly enjoyed the first half because it told a story and featured some great songs, starting with the opening number, Just Arrived, sung with verve and hope by Wannabees and Dreamers Monique Loosemore, DeLuca, Tori Blackwell, Alicia Jolly, Andrea Mallord, Josie Puttock-West, Emily Blake and Beata Paffey. On the way they come up against disappointment, a Director played by the splendidly commanding and amusing

Christopher Peck, and the Writers with Graeme Tubb the standout for his rendition of I’ve Got Rhythm as he bangs out words on a tiny portable typewriter. The show was primarily a vehicle for women but they were complemented so well by the other men too, Rick Baxter, Dan Kerry, Dominic Avey, the expansive Panos Christophi and Steve Frost. The Wannabees are one thing but what about the Has Beens? Now I couldn’t possibly admit to identifying with them but for me they were top dollar, outrageously funny, poignant and in vibrant strong voice. There were great performances from Grey, Bull and Long, Carole Blaine, Sandra Dry, Stephanie Verrall, Anna Grimble and Alison Avann. There was a point with Gotta Get a Gimmick when I wondered if Seaford was ready for all this raunchy excitement, but that’s what theatre should be about… isn’t it? The set was minimal, with the few props moved around to effect, and much of the success must go to sound and light man James Nolan, with assistants Tanya Ryan, Owen Dique and Izzy Dry coordinating and highlighting the performers and music ably provided by Russell Taylor (keyboard), Alex Harrington (drums), Simon Underwood (guitar), Andy Harsant (bass) and Steve French (trumpet). But I’ll reserve my last plaudit for Long and Hilary Ryan’s spot-on costumes. Bravo Seaford Musical Theatre and so glad you are back. Encore! Andrea Hargreaves Photo by Lamiah Gow

Seaford Head Dewpond Restoration Project

Time to Act!

A dewpond is an oasis in the desert that is the South Downs, a haven for migrating birds and thirsty mammals, a rendezvous for courting frogs and dragonflies, and a home for those countless invertebrate creatures we call ‘pond life’. Yes, we all know there is plenty of rain on those hills, but the water simply drains away as soon as it falls because chalk is so porous. As a result there are no streams or rivers on the Downs. From Medieval times farmers have solved their herd’s hydration problems by digging dewponds, small round ponds, artificially lined to hold water. There used to be dozens of them on the hills around Seaford and now there is one, up on Seaford Head, beside South Barn. But it is no longer a haven for wildlife, in fact you would be hard pressed to describe it as a pond at all! It is overgrown, choked with an invasive non-native weed, the New Zealand Pygmy Weed, also known as the Australian Swamp Stonecrop. It doesn’t sound attractive and it isn’t! We need to eradiate it and restore the pond into the area of open water it once was, vital to our native wildlife. Funding from the South Downs Trust has allowed work to begin. By the time you read this the old fences will have been replaced, with the support of STC and SDNPA rangers and volunteers. That was the easy part. Now the hard work begins. The resulting renovation will benefit our natural wildlife, increase biodiversity in the Nature Reserve and be a source of wonder to the thousands of visitors who walk past it every year. We need you to volunteer to help. We are creating a ‘Friends’ group to undertake the next stage of the work and to be responsible for the future health of the pond. Seaford Bonfire Society Last October Seaford Bonfire Society (SBS) was finally able to celebrate the postponed 10th year anniversary since re-forming, attracting circa 10,000 visitors throughout the town and at Martello Fields. Seaford Sunshine Strummers I’m a sunshine strummer! Who would have thought that at my antiquated age I could achieve so much fun from learning to play a little toy-like wooden instrument, but hey, I have, along with many others in Seaford! Now most of you are probably wondering what on earth I am talking about, but if you happen to reside in a local care home, or if you have strolled along Seaford prom on a clement Friday afternoon, you may well have heard us. Six years ago the Seaford Sunshine Strummers Ukulele Group was just an aspirational vision in Trevor Jones’ imagination, but he was determined to make things happen and now we are a vibrant group of folk (admittedly mostly somewhat past their prime), who meet to sing together, accompanied by our trusty ukuleles, and under the patient direction of John Cave. The group has proved so popular that it has grown too large to take on new members, so notwithstanding the challenges of Covid a new thriving ‘Beginners Group’ has been formed under the tuition of Martin Murphy. Why do we do it? Well to be truthful, mainly for our own enjoyment, but if I mention that last year we raised £1,300 for our chosen charity, the First Responders, you will see that we also have a beneficial effect on the community (and that was with Covid preventing us from fulfilling most of our booked gigs!). We perform, free of charge, for local community groups or at charity events, and are often given donations, but this year the majority of the £1,300 came from the generosity of people hearing us on the prom on Friday afternoons, and dropping some coins (or even notes in some cases) in our collecting box. Sadly the weather has become too cold for those sessions now, but we will be back when it turns warmer in spring, between 2 and 4pm on Friday afternoons. We are often joined by other musicians – Mark with his clarinet and Dave with his accordion, to name but two regulars. We love it when people stop to listen, and are particularly fond of those wonderful people who dance to our tunes! The main reason for this article is that this year Trevor has had a plan to raise some money for the Little Theatre, while giving us a chance to put together a proper performance for the Seaford public. Our first

ever concert will take place on 1st April (no joke, honest!) from 7.30 to 10.15pm, and really should be a fun occasion. There are only about 100 seats in the Little Theatre, so once friends and family of the performers have snapped up their tickets, I believe places may be in short supply. Crosby Menswear in Broad Street has kindly agreed to sell our tickets from 1st March, so make a note and get in early! Tickets are £8 each, which includes a programme and free refreshments at the break, and all profits will go to the Little Theatre, a charity which has obviously had a hard time financially in recent years. Shipwreck with a happy ending... There have been many shipwrecks in Seaford Bay over the years and 140 years ago, in1882, a 301 ft long ‘iron screw steamer’ called The Gannet which had been built on the Clyde by Barclay Curle & Co in 1878 was returning from Calcutta, destined for London. On Valentine’s Day morning it ran aground in thick fog near the Martello Tower in Seaford. Captain Hardinge and his crew were all brought ashore safely and taken to The Bay Hotel to recover from their ordeal. He was helped to dry the ship’s paper by a young lady who worked at the hotel. The ship had been very heavily laden with a large cargo of wheat, linseed, cotton, indigo, hides, tea and coffee and miraculously, most of the cargo was reported as having been salvaged. This was made possible thanks to the newly constructed sea wall from which

a form of doubletracked bridge out to the wreck was constructed, enabling wagons to go back and forth. The goods were then carted to the railway station for onward transmission or taken to be stored in the barn at Pigeon House Farm. It is interesting to note that a number of sources reported that there was no demand for tea and coffee from local grocers for a long time! The ship was still stuck on the beach when, two weeks later, a strong gale broke it in two. Apparently, for many years afterwards it was possible to see parts of the iron keel at low tide and her propeller shaft was recovered in 1913. There was a lovely postscript to this tale, many years later. Shortly after the opening of Seaford Museum, an exhibition on Shipwrecks was held. On the opening day of the exhibition, Pat Berry, chronicler of the museum for many years, was approached by descendants of the young lady of The Bay Hotel story who brought the story up to date . . . Captain Hardinge married her and took her back to the East with him – a happy-ever-after tale! The thrice-yearly Martello Magazine is out now and contains articles about Micklefield School and a possible medieval lighthouse on Seaford Head. The magazine is on sale at the Martello Tower and at Seaford Tourist Information Centre in Church Street.

Wow – is Seaford Sessions excited?! You’ll be stomping your feet in Seaford Little Theatre on Saturday 2nd April at 7.30pm when the band, dubbed the Sex Pistols of Folk by mastering engineer John Davis, takes to the stage. The three-piece group The Trials of Cato is currently on a UK tour. The Trials of Cato won BBC Radio 2’s Best Album in 2019’s Folk Awards, with Mark Radcliffe saying of them: ‘One of the real discoveries on the folk circuit in recent times,’ fRoots magazine said they were ‘A band name on everyone’s lips’ and the Guardian described them as ‘Swaggering’ with ‘Glossy results.’ They pay homage to folk tradition but then twist it into something else entirely to resonate with the modern world. Formed in Beirut, the band returned to the UK in 2016, performing up and down the country. Their debut album Hide and Hair received much media attention and repeated airplay on Radio 2 and 6 Music. Following a year of wall-to-wall touring across the UK, Europe and North America in 2019, their march was halted by Covid but they have emerged from their enforced chrysalis transformed, with mandolin, Irish bouzouki and banjo player plus singer Polly Bolton, formerly of The Magpies, completing the line up alongside Tomos Williams and Robin Jones. Their second album, Gog Magog, is scheduled for release later this year. Polly said: ‘I’ve always loved The Trials of Cato’s powerfolk vibe, so when they approached me about joining the band I knew that this was going to be the perfect outlet for that new sound. It felt like we already shared a creative vision, but when we played together for the first time we knew that we had something really special.’ So get those tickets booked fast, from the Tourist Information Office in Church Street or online from WeGotTickets, before they all sell out. The Corelli Ensemble has a host of gorgeous music to play for you this March, including Grieg’s much loved Holberg Suite, and the heartrending theme from the film Ladies in Lavender performed by violinist, Maeve Jenkinson. There is a strong local twist to this concert, with Six Traditional Sussex Folk Songs, collected by Butterworth and arranged for strings by Ed Hughes, plus an exciting opportunity to hear Seaford Snapshots by Paul Lewis, evoking aspects of our wonderful surroundings, such as Splash Point, the Esplanade, and the Seven Sisters. The club has a wide range of children’s and youth teams, and holds training sessions at The Salts and plays matches at the Downs Leisure Centre. The defibrillators donation was possible due to Peter Lambert’s tireless fundraising. Peter rallied the local companies and worked with the Oliver King Foundation to bring the potentially lifesaving equipment to Seaford. The foundation is run by the parents of Oliver, who sadly passed away during a school swimming contest. Their goal is to ensure defibrillators are available at every school and sports club in the country. We’d also like to wish all the best to Seaford Town FC as its first team continues to do very well this season.

The former NatWest Bank building in Clinton Place has now become a place for banking or withdrawing seeds rather than money. Now the home of Seaford Environmental Alliance (SEA) Hub, it represents many local organisations concerned with climate change, the need to recycle, cooking healthily, and a lot more besides. The Hub is kicking off the gardening year on Saturday 19 March with its first Garden Jumble Sale for both new and experienced gardeners, and especially for families who would like to make their gardens more productive by growing food.

Is your shed cluttered with duplicate or unused tools or equipment? The Hub is open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings between 10am and 1pm so that others can give things a new life. Have you got too many seeds? Or been too successful with your seedlings? Bring them along too for sharing and swapping. Learn how to sow seeds to get them off to a good start. Cinema Gala for TYCP Seaford Community Cinema and The Youth Counselling Project (TYCP) have a new date for the postponed gala benefit evening. So get those tickets booked before they sell out for what promises to be a really fun-filled night at the Barn Theatre on Saturday 2nd April. The main event is a showing of the critically acclaimed musical In the Heights (U) at 7.30pm, but before that a Clubby’s burger, meat or vegan option, available from 6.30pm, is included in your ticket price. To put you in the Noo Yawk vibe the film will be preceded by a dance performance by up and coming local group Streetfunk. All profits are going to TYCP, the Seaford-schools-based charity which provides counselling for young people suffering mental health problems. In this academic year TYCP is paying for 80-plus students from Seaford Head and the town’s four primary schools to have blocks of 10 individual sessions of one-to-one therapy from appropriately trained counsellors which TYCP employs. In addition some group sessions are held if it is felt those pupils would benefit more from this approach. Seaford Scene is a completely independent small business. With a rise in anxiety levels for young people of 30 per cent, it is estimated that one in six youngsters is now in serious need of counselling for a variety of problems, up since Covid from one in 10. Each block of 10 sessions costs about £500, which means TYCP needs at least £40,000 a year plus admin costs. The bulk of the money comes from foundations and corporate concerns but TYCP has to apply for grants, usually annually, so nothing is ever certain and it has just received a blow: there will be no grant this year from the National Lottery’s Community Fund which has supported the charity with three amounts of around £10,000 in the past. Chair Julia Hancock said: ‘With great regret we may have to reduce our service unless we can make up the difference through extra fundraising.’ The upshot is that TYCP badly needs any boost that it can get so that it isn’t forced to cut the number of young people that are helped in the next academic year. Buying a ticket for what promises to be a great evening out will help enormously. How loneliness can lead to an increased risk of dementia in adults As social isolation has been increasing among older adults, a new study shows a notable link between loneliness and dementia risk. Researchers found a three-fold increase in risk of subsequent dementia among lonely adults under 80 years old who would otherwise be expected to have a relatively low risk based on age and genetic risk factors. Their study also found that loneliness was associated with poorer executive function (i.e. a group of cognitive processes including decision-making, planning, cognitive flexibility and control of attention) and changes in the brain that indicate vulnerability to Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD). ‘These signs have become particularly acute in the past two years where Covid isolation has meant that it has literally been a health risk to meet together with friends and family. Acknowledging signs of loneliness in yourself and others, building and maintaining supportive relationships and providing much-needed support for the people in our lives who are feeling lonely are important for everyone. But they’re especially important as we age to increase the chances that we’ll delay or perhaps even prevent cognitive decline. The social environments we live in day-to-day are a vital part of leading a healthy, vibrant and thriving life. At Clifden House, we ourselves feel we are coming out of hibernation as we can reintroduce visits and events to the home, including the welcome return of the Tickled Pink theatre and musicals group, who have treated our residents to so many wonderful and heart-warming shows in the past. We use these

events as an opportunity for family and friends to come and join our residents, just as they would at a live event out in the community. Re-engaging with that sense of community is as important for us as a home, as it can be for each and every individual. Trees for Seaford

New Year, new trees, new members

Winter may be the time that sensible creatures hunker down and hibernate, but it’s a crucial time of year for Trees for Seaford, as we had lots of new trees, including disease resistant elms, chanticleer pears and frosted whitethorn to be planted during winter. After some delays from the tree suppliers before Christmas (due to the weather being too warm!) we finally got the last batch of trees delivered ready to plant in January. Back in November we felt very privileged to have tree expert Keith Sacre guiding our tree planting sessions. There are a lot of things to remember when planting trees so they will thrive. There are even more things to worry about when planting in grass verges and residential areas. It is important to ensure that residents are happy to have trees in their streets and are able to water and look after them. All ground must be surveyed in advance for any potential pipes/wires and other services. Although all volunteers, including residents on the streets we are planting, are welcome, we especially appreciate our trained volunteers when it comes to supervising the actual digging, which is done with orange-handled insulated spades, and the subsequent planting and staking. We ask residents to help follow up with ongoing monitoring and watering during dry weather. Keith is coming back in February to do another training session – this time about the correct pruning of trees. Many thanks to Keith, and also to Karen for writing up detailed notes about the training to share and taking photographs.

In January we planted more trees in Tudor Close and Westdown Road. Thank you to all the delightful residents who supported us and who offered to plant bulbs around the new trees. A big welcome to all our new members, especially Dan who brought not only a wealth of horticultural and arboriculture experience, but became even more popular when he served the hard-working volunteers hot drinks and biscuits from his car! We will be restarting our Tree TLC sessions again from February – approximately 2nd Saturday and 3rd or 4th Tuesday of most months. We are still asking people to look out for interesting trees around town. Monica told us recently about one in Micklefield Green. The Paulownia tomentosa is an unusual tree with large heart-shaped leaves and large fragrant violet flowers. It’s also known as the foxglove tree, or the princess tree. In Japan people would traditionally plant one if they had a daughter, and the tree was so fast growing, that the paulownia wood could be made into a highquality chest or other items for her dowry. We would love to hear about your favourite trees. In Seaford we’d rather be planting than cutting down the trees, but if you do have fallen trees or branches, maybe you could make a woodpile for wildlife, or make the wood into bird or insect boxes? THE PROBUS CLUB OF SEAFORD At our recent meeting we had a presentation from Peter Gwilliam, Chairman of Seaford Lifeguards. Peter explained that Seaford Lifeguards was founded in 1970, with the purpose of keeping Seaford beach safe for residents and visitors. They are an independent, voluntary organisation, but work closely with the RNLI at Newhaven and with the Coastguard Agency. Since Seaford Beach is classed as a ‘Rural’ beach, there is no responsibility on the local authority to provide a Lifeguard function, unlike at Brighton, which is classed as a ‘Resort’ and therefore the City Council provides and funds the Lifeguards. Peter explained that, although all those involved are unpaid volunteers, it still needs funding of around £10,000 per year for the operation to function, and to keep all of their equipment in fully serviceable condition. They do receive an ‘allowance’ from the local authority, and they pay no rent for their operational

headquarters above the Rugby Club at the Salts, nor for their base at Martello. They cover the whole of Seaford Bay, from Splash Point to west of the Sailing Club. Their Operational Lifeguards are qualified to international standards, and their duties include First Aid, and rescue. As an aside Peter mentioned that many of their volunteers are older teenagers, perhaps waiting to start at university, an apprenticeship, or work. The work they have done with the Lifeguards is often well regarded by potential employers as an indication of team working expertise, dedication and community spirit. It is encouraging to note how many lifeguards have gone on to successful careers in the Armed Forces, as Paramedics or in the Police and Fire Service. The Lifeguard’s operational season is from 1st May until 30th September each year, to align with the dates of the local bye-laws. They provide a service every Saturday and Sunday during the season, in addition to any Bank Holidays. They are normally in position by 9.30 am, and stay in post until 6pm, although if the beach is particularly busy, they may stay later. The Lifeguards are there to render assistance to people (and animals!), to watch over the beach for items of danger being washed ashore (including sofas!), and to offer advice to visitors. Peter commented how visitors from inland areas often have no concept of tides, and hence the numbers that get cut off at high tide. They encourage considerate use of the beach, for the benefit of those sunbathing, swimming, paddle boarding or fishing. They also inspect safety equipment, such as buoys and lifebelts, throughout the year. Peter stated that, after the volunteers, their most useful assets are the two ‘Arancia’ rescue boats. These are very fast and manoeuvrable, and can often reach areas inaccessible to the Lifeboat service. Finally, Peter commented that a couple of years ago, Seaford Lifeguards were one of the biggest and strongest units in the country. However, following lockdown and other restrictions they were now struggling with both volunteers and funding. However, they were determined to succeed and will definitely be back. A New Greenhavens Network As the winter months come to an end and spring is here, Greenhavens Network has reformed and is ready to continue connecting communities with nature. Our committee has changed and we have two new coordinators: Jessie Rodriguez who will continue her fantastic Wilder Gardens Champions programme and training and Miriam Thundercliffe who will be administrator and point of contact for training and supporting local groups. Both local mums are committed and passionate about community and nature. Although the last two years have been tough, our love for nature has increased. Seaford u3a News Having said this before and been proved wrong, Seaford u3a is now back on its feet again. Of course last time Omicron came along and all the carefully laid plans went by the board, but we are now ‘learning to live with Covid’ as the politicians urge us to. Now when, at least at the time of writing, there are no new variants of Covid and the warmer weather might keep it at bay it is hoped that progress can be made. The monthly coffee morning got going in January with a good turnout of members previously starved of social contact. This month it will be on Wednesday 16th March from 10am to 12 noon at the Con Club, Crouch Lane, Seaford. There will be a small charge of £2 for coffee or tea and light refreshments. As usual this is open to members and non-members, the latter particularly welcome. Non-members can be introduced to meet some members if they wish.

Book groups are meeting and a member from one which meets once a month has sent a review of December’s book. It was The Siege by Helen Dunmore. This is about Leningrad, September 1941. Hitler orders the German forces to surround the city at the start of the most dangerous, desperate winter in its history. For two pairs of lovers – Anna and Andrei, Anna’s novelist father and banned actress Marina – the siege becomes a battle for survival. They will soon discover what it is like to be so hungry you boil shoe leather to make soup, so cold you burn furniture and books. But this is

not just a struggle to exist, it is also a fight to keep the spark of hope alive... The book was chosen by a member who said: ‘My reason for choosing this book was the beautiful expressive writing. The cold felt cold and the bleakness of life felt bleak’, The wind has dropped. Snow falls straight down in large, soft flakes that blur footprints as soon as they are made. All sounds are muffled. Other members found the book powerful, beautifully descriptive although harrowing and thought the determination and strength of the human spirit to survive against all odds was remarkable. The book ends in spring 1942 when the Russians start to break the blockade by means of an Ice Road across Lake Ladoga. The surviving members of the family go out for a walk and Leningrad settles like a swan on the calmest of waters. Members agreed that they had gained in knowledge. SEAFORD AFTERNOON FLOWER CLUB At our meeting on Thursday 17th March we will be having an imposed workshop entitled An Easter Basket. Members will be provided with mechanics and flowers, and shown how to create an attractive arrangement in preparation for Easter. The competition will be A Foliage Arrangement – another challenge for our talented members. We did not meet as a club in January, but several members enjoyed a delicious lunch at the White Lion in Seaford. This was a good opportunity for us all to meet and chat in an informal setting. Three of our members demonstrated flower arranging techniques to the Seaford Hard of Hearing Club at their February AGM and the arrangements are shown in the photographs below. We were grateful for their donation to our charity of the year, which is the Seaford Foodbank.

Looking ahead, on 21st April Colin Whiteman will be talking to us about Seaford Head Flora and Fauna. Colin is an accomplished expert in his field and we are sure his talk will be fascinating to hear. Reflecting the theme of the afternoon, the competition will be ‘A Seascape’. Neighbourhood Watch Roundup Joy of joys, spring is springing up all over and with it, we are out and about, which is a truly wonderful thing having endured as much as we all have through the pandemic. It is a time for rejoicing and rejuvenation! Early in the pandemic, we made an executive decision at NHW HQ, to get behind our lovely community and do what we could, however we could, to make life as simple and as safe as possible. We set up our website as an information portal and coordinated our efforts with the Lewes & Eastbourne Council Community Hub. And like you, we hunkered down and got on with it. This meant we didn’t run our membership and subs quite the way we used to either and now that the worst of it is behind us, we are ready to rejuvenate too! NHW has changed a lot since our Association was registered back in 1986. Back then, there was no national presence and no guiding body. These days NHW is quite an impressive organisation throughout the UK and ultimately accountable to the Home Office for what we do and how we do it. Our Association runs a little differently to most and is recognised by National NHW as both innovative and trend-setting in the way we do things. Our belief is that Great Neighbours make safer communities, and so our focus is always on neighbourliness as a priority – as a result, our town enjoys a very low crime rate compared to most others in the country. Knowing our town like we do, makes us both relevant and effective, and we are most effective where we are most visible.

It is a proven fact that where NHW is visible, crime reduces by between 16–26 per cent But what does ‘visible’ mean? It certainly doesn’t mean neighbours in high-viz patrolling their patch! Just by having a NHW roundel on your front door, or even one on your car windscreen, you are sending a clear and visible message that NHW is active in our town and that we look out for one another. That puts opportunistic crime on a back foot straight away. Having a street sign on your road is another visible deterrent to crime and our town, for the most part, is very well signboarded. Another visible deterrent is a No Cold Calling decal at your front door. Our association was fundamental in rolling out No Cold Calling in Sussex and working closely with Sussex Police and trading Standards, we were the very first No Cold Calling town in the county. No Cold Calling is enforceable and with a decal on your door, you are well within rights to report callers to the Police if you feel threatened or the caller is persistent. We have a simple-to-navigate website which is constantly updated, and our RoundUp email newsletter shares out relevant and helpful safety information to our subscribers regularly. We have two major open meetings a year, in May for our AGM, and again in September. These open meetings are run in Expo format with displays and information tables showcasing various community safety and support organisations, a speaker, refreshments and the good biscuits. All of this costs money, but as a well-managed Association we keep everything running within our means. This has meant that our Association Subs have not changed in more than five years and remain at £3 per household per year and discounted to £2 per household per year for senior citizens. There is also no obligation to join the Association. We consider everyone a beneficiary of the work we do, and membership to NHW is free. Those subs do keep us going, so if you can afford to join the Association, we encourage you to do so. Joining us is as easy as pie, and you can choose how you want to join and at what level. On the Verge

Marching into Spring

As I write, a few of us have been out and about looking for evidence of emerging wild flowers. The mild weather has encouraged the foliage to appear very early, and by the time you read this, many more should be in full bloom! Many thanks to our new Renaturing Champions. These volunteers have been out checking their local green spaces and blossoming nature corridors. My highlight was the discovery of Blatchington Trees – a lovely spot of woodland alive with blackbirds, squirrels, great tits, blue tits and a wren near Seaford Primary School. In the undergrowth insects were buzzing round the Winter Heliotrope. The woodland floor was a carpet of green. We are currently investigating how we can work with residents in this lovely ancient lane to fully appreciate

and monitor the existing biodiversity and potential for improvement. For example, looking at gaps in the hedgerows, watching out for invasive species, documenting the magnificent trees in this lane, and sharing our sightings. Do get in touch if you live nearby and would like to get involved. One of the delightful ‘hidden’ green spaces we are monitoring is the green between Sandore Road and Millfield Close. Melene noticed sweet violets appearing, and up to 100 starlings high in the tree tops, and another observer that some branches had been lopped off, and sawn into a pile (perhaps for wildlife?). In mid January in the Sea meadows (Martello fields) there were lots of flowers starting to come up, and already in flower were some surprisingly big daisies, buttercups, dandelions, chickweed and groundsel. The humble dandelion (often maligned as a weed) can be a vital source of nectar for early bumble bees, such as in this vibrant verge last year in Nursery close. In late January, the group checking out the new growth in the field dips near College Road (known as the Covers) spotted a hoverfly, and even a fox! Thanks so much for our keen volunteers in these spaces, who have also been helping to pick up litter and address other issues. We are particularly looking for ‘renaturing champions’ to monitor the plants and wildlife of the meadow areas of the Salts, and the verges in nearby Edinburgh Road. Please do get in touch if you are interested in helping – enthusiasm is more important than experience! Spring is nearly here (astronomical Spring is on 20th March) and if you need a bit of encouragement to get planting (or are keen to help others do so) do come along to the SEA hub 10am to 1pm on Saturday 19th March for the Get Ready for Gardening workshop, where we can share, recycle and repurpose tools, materials seeds and plants, to help Seaford’s nature-filled gardens spring into life! 2022 Martello Half Marathon The Martello Half Marathon finally emerges from Lockdown, reinvigorated for 2022! As you will all know, many events have been cancelled or postponed over the last two years, including the Martello Half Marathon organised by Seaford’s Martello Rotary Club. Although restrictions meant we couldn’t hold proper events, we did keep the pot boiling with a number of virtual runs, but of course these are nothing like the real thing. We had hoped to hold the race on Sunday 18th July last year, but this turned out not to be possible due to clashes with other events held on the same day. So, on Sunday 27th March, nearly two years after the last event, the second Martello Half Marathon will take place, starting and finishing on the seafront near the Rugby Club at the Salts Recreation Ground, and offering a beautiful but tough run following footpaths and tracks

up onto the Downs. After taking in the stunning views, there will be an exhilarating downhill run to Bishopstone, then along the seafront to the cheers of the crowds! 2019 attracted over 150 runners, and we are hoping for more this year. In fact initial entries have been so encouraging, we’ve had to restrict the race to the first 275 entries due to constraints on some facilities. Inner Wheel Day On 10th January 1924, thanks to the initiative of a group of women who met at the Turkish Baths in Manchester, one of the most important volunteering organisations in the world was inaugurated. 10th January is a special day to members of Inner Wheel and is celebrated in many different ways by Clubs and Members around the world, with the main intention of bringing Inner Wheel into the public eye. Margarette Golding was the founder of the first meeting in Manchester and achieved so much in promoting Inner Wheel in the 1920s and 30s when all she had was a telephone and ‘slow’ mail. A sure sign that summer is on its way is when Seaford Town Council prepares to bring a splash of colour to Seaford seafront with the return of its West View Beach Huts, available for weekly hire from April and situated just a stone’s throw from the idyllic Seaford beach! Bookings are now open for members of the public to hire Seaford’s West View Beach Huts and have their own beach haven for a week! Situated right next door to Frankie’s Café kiosk and with access to toilets close by, these vibrant huts will be ready from the end of April and available all summer, until the end of September. The huts will be available for weekly hire from a Friday, costing £135 during the quieter months of April, May, June and September. During the peak times of July and August, prices will be £165 for the week. A Seaford Town Council representative said, ‘This is something really positive for people to look forward to, especially after a tough couple of years for some. Homeland Elegies

by Ayad Akhtar

Homeland Elegies is a novel which could be (and partly is) an autobiographical series of essays. Mr Akhtar is a cardiologist, non-practising Muslim, and supporter of Donald Trump. He and his wife were Pakistani migrants, professional educated people, who moved to the USA, enticed by the American Dream. Life is good and Ayad enjoys a privileged middle-class US childhood. Then 9/11 happens and Ayad notices how attitudes towards his family change. The very first chapter explores the rise of Donald Trump. If you have ever wondered what people see in Trump, how they are seduced by his message and how he came to power in spite of being dismissed as a showman, then Akhtar examines this using his relationship with his father as a way to explore this momentous change in the nation. Akhtar goes on to explore themes of American life, 9/11, Partition, Muslim identity, family dynamics and Salman Rushdie. It’s not a light read, but it is intelligently written, and the essay style of writing means that it can be read in bite-sized sections. At its heart, Homeland Elegies is the story of a father, a son, and the country they both call home. It seamlessly blends fact and fiction to tell a story of belonging and dispossession in a post-9/11 world. Tash Donovan
