Seaford Photographic Society January’s meetings were all Zoom-only, starting with two set-subject competitions; People Portraits and Triptych. Our judge for the evening was Darren Pullman CPAGB EFIAP BPE3*. A triptych is made up of three images, either separate photos or one photo divided into three. Anna-Marie Armstrong took the winner’s trophy with her stunning The Three Faces of a Kite (photo below),
another fine example of nature photography, for which the club is getting something of a reputation. Janice Hewitt took 2nd place and Simon Rigby 3rd. In the People Portraits competition first place went to Thelma Long’s In Blue, (photo right), with Simon Watkins and Colin Mitchell taking 2nd and 3rd respectively. Next up was the Marrutt Trophy, the annual inter-club battle with our nearest neighbours, Seven Sisters Camera Club. Seaford was hosting the meeting as they were the current holders of the trophy. Around fifteen members joined us from Seven Sisters, with a similar number from Seaford, and the judging was carried out by Andy Smith LRPS, a regular visitor to both clubs. By the half time break Seven Sisters was very slightly ahead with 176 to Seaford’s 171, so it was going to be an exciting second half. The scores for the second part of the evening were Seven Sisters 178 and Seaford…178! So Seven Sisters maintained their 5-point lead for a 354 to 349 finish, the closest result for many years. It was a fun evening and Andy Smith commented afterwards, ‘I thoroughly enjoyed the

competition. As ever, a warm welcome from Seaford and many great images’. Well done to Seven Sisters for their win and we look forward to them hosting next year’s event. We usually have a print league competition but, because of the Covid limitations, it
has been impractical again this season, so we had a second PDI league starting in January. Round one was judged by Peter Fry ARPS DPAGB BPE4* on Zoom from his home in Barnstable. Peter had particular praise for those images where the photographer had obviously thought seriously about the composition and taken time to work out where to stand to take a photo with maximum impact. In the standard group Martin Brewer scored a 20/20 for his black and white custom car shot (photo top). Chris Dawson’s minimalist monochrome (photo above) and Colin Mitchell’s tawny owl, taking off (photo right) scored the only 20s in the advanced group. For the last meeting of the month we welcomed Andy Phillips to give his talk on ‘The Inner Landscape’. This excellent lecture was about creating beautiful still life images using just natural light and no expensive equipment. There was lots of detailed advice on everything from the practicalities of setting up to final post-processing. We also appreciated being shown some of Andy’s wonderful landscapes, with lots of advice on how to create an image with impact.
