Letter from the Publisher Welcome to August Welcome to August, month of the Golden North Salmon Derby and the beginning of the end of summer. August is one of my favorite months for fish, picks (berry picking), and hikes. I’m typically not one for sport hunting or competitive fishing but I’ll admit it, I love fishing in the salmon derby. Every year that I fish it, I buy my ticket with the feeling that I’m going to be lucky this year, I just know it! Usually it’s a bust for me on the fishing end but I always have fun. I love the excitement, the snack food, watching other people’s poles bounce and of course the gorgeous scenery. August is a great month for hiking, running and outdoor sports. The weather can still be warm and by the end of the month the autumn colors begin to settle in and the crisp air cools us off. Some of my favorite hikes are ones where I can also continue to gather wild edibles to store for the colder months. Now, as any good berry picker or fisherman knows, we don’t readily reveal our sources or locations to just
as the variety of outdoor activities and long days combine to add depth to my workout. August is also a great month to start storing your summer harvest in preparation for the colder months. That includes vacuum packing, freezing, smoking and jarring or pickling nature’s goodies that we work so hard to get. I cannot tell you how nice it is to pull out some salmon or a bag of berries from the freezer during the fall or winter and savor them while reminiscing about the time it took to get them. So here’s to the beginning of the end, of summer that is. Good luck in the derby, or the Klondike or whatever other fun plans you may have!
anyone, that would just be silly. I will say that one of my favorite August hikes or trail runs is up Eaglecrest. You get the best of both worlds with mountain and lake views. It’s a nice wide trail but also has a good elevation gain. The foliage is different than most
hikes in Juneau and/or Douglas as it starts at a higher elevation then many trails finish. August is also the month that those who are training for the Klondike Road Relay Race are really hitting the pavement. For me, August is usually when I am in the best shape

CLEANING YOUR HOME OR KEEPING A CLEAN HOME? My mother has always kept an impeccably clean and organized home. I remember stories of how my mother’s friends would hesitate to come visit with their children in my parents BC (before children) years. This was because, despite her invitations and willingness to host, they all felt like a tornado of disaster walking through her door. Their kids would leave a path of destruction (as most kids do) and my mom would cheerfully follow behind wiping up spills and sliding coasters under drinks, picking up as fast as little fingers pulled down or dug into the house. One of her friends re-counts how the first time she ever saw my mother’s home with the dishes undone and clutter about the living room, that it “did her heart good”. On the flip side, I known more than one person who has said they prided themselves on the fact that their home was drastically more unkempt. They said the lack of cleaning was intentional so that people would feel comfortable if they happened to spill something, track in mud or knock something over accidentally breaking it. All of them thought the mess was actually more inviting than a clean home. That worked for the kids who frequented their homes, however, myself and my friends were always afraid to touch anything for fear of being covered in pet hair or something sticky. We weren’t sure if we should stand or move a pile of laundry to find a place to sit. We didn’t want to take our shoes off at the door because our socks might never be the same! At some point messy becomes disgusting and clutter becomes hoarding; both a potential health hazard! I find it intriguing how people accept the various levels of cleanliness (or lack there of) as normal and acceptable. I’ve found that I swing through different stages of both extremes throughout periods of life. However, my mother’s genetic tendency and influence toward a clean and organized home are predominant in what I desire, even when I’m failing to adequately achieve such a lofty goal. I find the advice of many psycologists concerning this issue rings true for me: a clean and organized home make it possible to

Do as much as you can as soon as you can. • Beds get made before we leave the house in the morning. Pajamas get put away or thrown in the laundry. • When groceries come in the house, I unpack and re-package them for storage or use immediately. Boxes get broken down and put in recycle and bags get folded and put away. • When cooking, I prep and clean as I go. If the dishwasher is full of clean dishes, then I rinse and stack the dirty dishes so they are ready to go in the dishwasher as soon as I empty it. Usually I empty the dishwasher while food is cooking, or randomly throughout the day, if I catch a few minutes between tasks. Just like with laundry, I’ve abandoned worry about making sure the load is full – I just run it if it’s close. I also clear the table, store the leftovers and do the dishes as soon as any meal is done.

• Shoes and coats get put away as soon as we come in the door – no shoes in the house! This also cuts down on the amount of dirt that gets tracked in, making keeping the floors clean easier as well. • I often sweep as soon as I notice a mess, but otherwise, it gets done in the evening before bed. We invested in a Rumba Pet Series vacuum that I often turn on while doing other chores. There are times a regular vacuum would be more efficient and I’ll likely get one when we move into the next house. However, the Rumba has been a life saver, especially with keeping the shedding from our dog much more manageable. • In the evening, I do a sweep through each room of the house, picking up random items, toys, clothes, etc. and at least making sure they are in the rooms they belong, if not actually put away. I finish up any last dishes, laundry, and floors before bed too. It is a relief to go to bed, knowing I will start the morning on a clean slate. There
have
been
periods where life was so busy that I would not have survived without my Mom and even friends popping in to help me get back on top of the cleaning chaos. I even hired a woman to come clean for a while to get us caught up and do some of the deep cleaning I hadn’t had time for. She was absolutely worth it – but that was because I had gotten to a place where my house needed to be cleaned. If you need that extra help – budget for it. Now I’m in a place where I can focus on simply keeping it clean. Usually, it is just me committed to this lifestyle, and there are times I resent that my husband and the girls are not as excited about helping me stay on top of keeping the house clean. Though at times the kids are great about picking up and doing extra. It’s an on-going conversation and exercise for all of us. I admit, there are times I really just do not want to do it…. But I’m building a habit. I believe the pay-off is worth it. I’m modeling a way of life for my girls. I remember my mother saying, “If the dishes are done and your bed is made, the house is clean.” I think that’s because it’s the basics. Start with the basics.

GET UNHINGED: 3 WAYS TO CREATE VISUALLY STRIKING DOORS IN YOUR HOME (BPT) - Think of a door opening and closing. Chances are you pictured it swinging on hinges, since that’s how most doors operate. But, more homeowners are choosing other door hanging hardware for a unique look with their interior and exterior doors. If you’re looking for a way to make visitors to your home say “wow,” consider alternatives to hinged doors for an unexpected twist. “Once you’ve chosen the door that’s perfect for you, it can be hung in a number of distinctive ways,” says Brad Loveless, marketing and product development manager for Simpson Door Company. “A pocket door, sliding barn door or a pivot door can add some personality and pizzazz to your home.” POCKET DOORS Similar to closet doors hung on a track, pocket doors slide open and closed, but disappear into the wall when closed. Popular in home offices, bathrooms and utility rooms, pocket doors save space and can make a room feel more open. Using
a pocket door in place of a hinged door saves about 10 square feet of floor space, notes home improvement expert Tim Carter. Depending on the width of the opening, you can use either a single pocket door, or double pocket doors that slide into opposite walls and meet in the middle when closed. Because they don’t seal as tightly as hinged doors, pocket doors are largely limited to use inside the home, instead of as entry doors. SLIDING BARN DOORS Barn doors are a bit like pocket doors in that they slide open and closed, but they’re hung on tracks that are visible. When opened, the doors are located on one side of the wall, instead of disappearing into the wall. For large openings, such as between dining rooms and living rooms, you can even hang multiple barn doors on tracks in order to divide the spaces. A number of companies offer high-end barn door track hardware, in a range of styles and colors. “People like the
unexpected look of a barn door,” says John Golesh, president of door hardware manufacturer Goldberg Brothers. “They’re a great way to add a rustic, yet elegant look to your home. And with the wide variety of door hangers and handles, a barn door can complement any interior décor.” In addition to the chic look barn doors offer, homes for sale with “barn door” in their listing sold for 13 percent more than expected and 57 days faster, according to research by Zillow Diggs. PIVOT DOORS Common in ancient buildings, pivot mounted doors are virtually unseen in North American homes. For homeowners who want an element of surprise, a pivot door is a good choice. In place of hinges or overhead sliders and tracks, pivot doors rotate open and closed around pins installed in the top and bottom of the door frame. The pins are set several inches in from the door frame, depending on the door’s size.
“For high-end homes with extra-wide doors, pivots are a great way to handle the additional weight, and will be unlike anything your visitors have seen before,” Loveless says. “We are making many different super-sized doors for this exact application.” Some of these doors are huge - measuring up to four feet wide or more. As “large, simple rectangles,” pivot doors can be designed to look like the surrounding wall, so fit well in modern style homes, notes architect Bud Dietrich. Unlike pocket doors and barn doors, pivot doors can seal tightly to their frame when closed, so can be used as entry doors.

Improve YOUR INDOOR AIR QUALITY BY CHECKING YOUR crawlspace especially when it is musty, moist or full of spider webs. If it is
It is recommended you bring the plastic up the wall at least two feet. However, I prefer to bring it all the way up to the sill plate (normally a 2x6 treated lumber plate that sits on top of the foundation wall).

ith all of the fantastic weather we’ve had in Juneau this summer, it’s hard to stay focused on house projects for as long as we probably should. One space you should give attention to at least once each year is your crawlspace. Just because the crawlspace in your home is not something you see every day, it’s not something you should ignore. Crawlspace moisture and air conditions can and certainly will affect a home. As cold moist air moves toward the warm air of the home, moisture in vapor form can enter the home from the crawlspace. This movement of air is called stack affect. More simply put, a house acts like a chimney for the crawlspace. For Example: When the dryer is running, the bathroom exhaust is going, and the range top is on, air is exhausting but where is the replacement air coming from? It is likely coming from gaps and cracks in thermal envelope such as around doors, windows and outlet boxes. Some of the replacement air is almost certainly coming from the crawlspace. This crawlspace air could be moisture laden, and potentially hazardous. How can you be sure your crawlspace is not causing problems in your home? This is going to require you to venture into your crawlspace. No one wants to go into their crawlspace

this is the time to get rid of it. With these items completed it is time to start laying out the vapor barrier. I like to use 20’ x 100’ poly sheeting and I plan out which direction I should run the sheeting based on the specific crawlspace.
moist a n d musty then it might be time to do something about it. Even if the dirt is clean and dry it might not always be that way. A dry crawlspace will still have evaporation or moisture vapor coming up from the surface. First, check to see if there is a vapor barrier. A typical vapor barrier is made up of a plastic sheeting (polyethylene 6 mil) on the ground of the crawlspace. You will want to inspect your vapor barrier to see if it is properly sealed so it can be as effective as possible. How do I go about installing a moisture barrier in my crawlspace? There are a couple of ways to go about sealing a crawlspace. The first is to use the polyethylene plastic sheeting or poly (typically 6 to 10 mil), acoustical sealant, 1x2 lumber (enough lineal footage for your exterior walls), concrete or wood screws, and a vinyl or house wrap tape. The first step is to make sure the crawlspace is clean of any organic material like wood scraps, paper, cardboard boxes, and large chunks of concrete or rocks. Inspect the subfloor and floor joists for any moisture related problems, high moisture content will suggest there is problem in the crawlspace. If there is any type of growth, fungal or mold,
SEAKLIVING

Now it is time to roll out the sheeting across the ground of the crawlspace leaving enough poly to reach the sill plate on all sides. Apply a ¼” bead of acoustical sealant to the sill plate extend the vapor barrier up the wall and fasten it to the sill with the 1x2 lumber and screws. This will keep the vapor barrier in place and provide a continuous seal around the perimeter of the crawlspace. Once the perimeter is secured, it is now time to seal around any posts in the crawlspace. At the posts, I will run the poly up the post like a sleeve, then caulk and seal any joints. Lastly, any joints in the polyethylene should be overlapped at least 6” with a bead of acoustical sealant applied and the joint taped with vinyl or Tyvek tape. I also like to seal any holes between the subfloor and living area using spray foam or caulk. The holes were likely created to run wires, pipes, and ducting. Sealing these holes will all but eliminate airflow from the crawlspace into the living area. It is also good practice to seal all exposed ducting with mastic or a foil tape; do not use duct tape. Another crawlspace sealing technique includes a variation to the above procedure where polyethylene sheeting is placed only a few inches up the foundation wall. Then using a commercial spray foam applicator, spray foam is applied to the foundation walls of the
crawlspace taking extra care to seal the vapor barrier to the foam. The foam will create an airtight seal up the foundation wall. This procedure will also improve the crawlspace by further insulating the space. Other crawlspace sealing membranes on the market range from 12 to 20 mills in thickness and accomplish a similar airtight vapor barrier as the technique above. These materials sometimes come in rolls of 3 or 4 feet wide and are applied and sealed up the foundation wall. Some are glued together, some are taped, and some have pre-applied tape strips. Some crawlspaces need to have drainage or a sump pump added to remove unwanted water. If a sump pump is required, it should be placed in a perforated drum at the lowest point of the crawlspace. All surface water should be able to drain into the sump pump drum. The vapor barrier can then be sealed over the top the drum, like sealing around a post. The key to all techniques is to be sure there is an airtight seal. Make sure all joints are overlapped and sealed. Seal around the perimeter and up posts. If you do the project yourself materials will likely cost around $0.50 per square foot. If you decide to hire a licensed professional to complete the project the price can range $1-5 per square foot depending on the material choice. A properly sealed crawlspace will reduce moisture in your home and can improve air quality. TRAIL RUNNERS I’m
sure by now everyone has noticed the increased number of runners on the roads and trails. Hopefully it is kind of hard to NOT notice us at this point; it means our safety colors and reflectors are working. Just like when the Woolly Bear caterpillars emerge in the fall, most people take a moment to stop and furrow their brows and say ‘huh, where did all of you come from?’ Hopefully May, June, and July saw sunny days and happy miles, but as we get into August, most of our running community is going to be settling in for the long and hard runs. Before I met some of the amazing women that I know now, I didn’t quite understand why there seemed to be a flood of runners in the fall; people running on trails, mountains, and roads. And sometimes they didn’t exactly seem to be enjoying it.
My father said to me one time, ‘you know, I never see a happy runner. They always seem to be scowling.’ Ron is very concerned with young ladies scowling; he says it gives us eyebrow wrinkles. So then I took it as a personal challenge to send him ridiculous selfies while running of me smiling. Anyone that thinks I take myself seriously on most things will be greatly let down. You should see the SnapChats I send. As with training for any run, it is important to remember that here in Alaska it is out of the house and into the food chain: we share our roads and trails with predators and prey alike. Just last night I watched a black bear lope across the road from a residential area into a grassy field. Running (walking, biking, hiking…) with headphones is probably the worst thing you can do for your safety. You can’t hear other people, you can’t hear animals, and you are shutting yourself off from important cues around you. I just play my music from my phone, and sure, if I pass someone they will hear Ke$ha or Nightwish for a few seconds, but I see it no differently than a normal conversation they would hear. I have run up on deer, bear, wondering dogs, people on bikes, and other people with headphones in who never heard me coming. I’m sure the cardio spike they experience at someone suddenly behind them is quite a shock, as their facial expressions would lead me to believe. For anyone who hasn’t heard ad nauseam about the Klondike Road Relay, it is the local pilgrimage of competitive racers, and runners who rock red dresses and tutus. Though our race is not in the name of any deity, the journey is fraught with mile upon grueling mile, and I’m sure many gods are cursed and called upon. The Klondike Road Relay is a way to ride the shirt tails of the tourist season, and basically have one last multi-town party before we all settle in for the rain and the wind that is biting at our heels as we cross the Canadian border. Expletives of frustration and bemoaning about tourists are common, but with our armor of running shoes and bright colors,

we flood our tourist-occupied town of Skagway and wine and dine at our favorite summer restaurants with only the stragglers of summer wandering the streets. Whitehorse welcomes us with excitedly honking horns and dashboard waves, and they are incredibly friendly to their Sister City.* I hope that they feel as warm of a welcome from us. The first race was six years before my parents would move to Alaska, and five years before I was born. What started off as a mere 25 teams in 1983, is now 153 registered teams. Last year we had a team from ‘Merica! that came up from Corralitos (by Santa Cruz), California. In 2015, 648 men and 1009 women pounded the 110 miles from Skagway to Whitehorse. But runners are not left alone to the roadside wilds, as most teams have between one and three support cars that leap frog them through the 21 hour race. And with 153 teams, that is quite an army of support! With some quick math, that could be an extra 459 people waiting for you at the finish line to cheer you on and cheers with beers. Some teams rent an RV and drive as one team, while other teams split up and trade off hotel keys and enthusiasm at designated checkpoints. The Klondike has welcomed us with northern lights, as September nights are dark enough and the start of the aurora season. Snow and frost have surprised runners coming over the pass. Moose have waited patiently for a break in runners to cross the road, ambling across without much concern for the dreary trickle of people. Bear have been spotted and shooed off the road by trucks where runners will soon wind along the lake shoreline. And probably the most entertaining sightings are the dresses, costumes, tutus, crowns, neon colors, pompoms, and painted cars. Several years in a row, a truck pulls a wood fire hot tub behind them, and we all want to be their friend. Then of course, you have to respect the teams who are actually serious teams, where splits matter and training has
been intense. But I would venture to say that the majority of teams are not in it to win it, but rather win leg 11. * http://www.juneau.org/clerk/Sister_ Cities/CBJs_Sister_Cities.php
Courtney Wendel has lived in Juneau since she was a year old. She has a twin brother and an older brother, and learned to enjoy the outdoors at a young age by following the boys into mischief. Graduating from JDHS in 2006, she attended UAS to receive her Literature of the Environment, BA English degree. When not at work she spends most of her time on the diverse trail system hiking, running, or camping with her spotted pooch and adventure buddies.

“Even by Alaska standards, this place has to be seen to be believed.” This beautiful acreage in Southeast Alaska has 3 separate cabins and is accessible by boat and float plane. It is located in Ground Hog Bay in Icy Straits, just a few miles from Swanson Harbor. There are existing moorings in the bay for your boats. The property is bordered on 3 sides by Tongass National Forest and faces approximately 900 feet of waterfront on the fourth side. With no private property adjoining, this site can be subdivided. The cabins face south for the best sun exposure, and each cabin is fully self-contained for spring-summer-fall living or a summer retreat. Each of the 3 cabins has a woodstove, propane heater, solar panel, generator, running water, septic system, on-demand hot water and full bath with a shower. There is a year-round creek running through the property. The maintenance building has all the tools and equipment you can think of, including ATVs, excavator and much more. Fish Pie I thought it is an important time to recognize our British explorers, and it’s a great time to talk about fish pies. Not traditionally known for their great cuisine, but coming up in ranks of style and taste. Southeast Alaska shares a lot in common with the same latitude, cool marine climate and forest biome. Precipitation is around the same, even though Juneau and London are about 4424 miles apart and Alaska could fit approximately 7 times the total area of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland combined. We have many names and history in our state thanks to the explorations of James Cook (Cook Inlet) in 1778 and Captain Dixon, John Meares, Portlock and George Vancouver’s 1794 voyage and survey from Puget Sound to Lynn Canal. They gave us many of the names we know today; such as Clarence Strait, Frederick Sound, Chatham Strait and Stephens Passage, who also brought along noted botanist George Menzies,

INGREDIENTS 2 lb potatoes, peeled, boiled and mashed Firm pinch saffron, infused in a cup of hot milk 6 tbsp butter 2 cloves garlic, peeled and smashed with flat side of knife 2 ¼ cup whole milk 1 pound halibut, rockfish or other fresh white fish 110g smoked black cod/butterfish 2 tsp flour 2 tbsp chopped chives for garnish Dash smoked sea salt (http://www.alaskapureseasalt.com/ is my favorite)
METHOD Preheat the oven to 350 F. Boil and mash the potato with the saffron milk and 2 tbsp of butter. Taste and season with salt and pepper. Pour the milk, peeled and smashed garlic into a wide pan, and place the fish fillets, skin side up on top. Bring slowly to the boil, cover the pan and
turn of the heat. Leave to stand for five minutes, or until any skin can be peeled off and the fish flakes easily. In another pan, melt 2 tbsp of butter and stir in the flour to make a quick roux. Cook for a minute, then stir in the milk from the fish pan. Cook, stirring, until thick and smooth (put it through a sieve if necessary). Stir half the sauce and all the chives gently into the fish, letting it fall in large flakes: add more sauce if necessary. Arrange the mixture into an ovenproof dish or individual dishes ( I love the little Le Creusset pots or mini cast iron pans for this type of individual serving). Top with the saffron mashed potato, and dab the last of the butter and pinch of finishing smoked salt on top. Bake for about half an hour, until browned. Serve with a crisp white wine, cold prawns, rhubarb crisp and minted peas From her majesty’s table to yours enjoy….
