Letter from the Publisher Welcome to August, month of the Golden North Salmon Derby and the beginning of the end of summer. August is one of my favorite months for fish, picks (berry picking), and hikes. I’m typically not one for sport hunting or competitive fishing but I’ll admit it, I love fishing in the salmon derby. Every year that I fish it, I buy my ticket with the feeling that I’m going to be lucky this year, I just know it! Usually it’s a bust for me on the fishing end but I always have fun. I love the excitement, the snack food, watching other people’s poles bounce and of course the gorgeous scenery. August is a great month for hiking, running and outdoor sports. The weather can still be warm and by the end of the month the autumn colors begin to settle in and the crisp air cools us off. Some of my favorite hikes are ones where I can also continue to gather wild edibles to store for the colder months. Now, as any good berry picker or fisherman knows, we don’t readily reveal our sources or locations to just anyone,

SEAKLIVING

Welcome to August as the variety of outdoor activities and long days combine to add depth to my workout. August is also a great month to start storing your summer harvest in preparation for the colder months. That includes vacuum packing, freezing, smoking and jarring or pickling nature’s goodies that we work so hard to get. I cannot tell you how nice it is to pull out some salmon or a bag of berries from the freezer during the fall or winter and savor them while reminiscing about the time it took to get them. So here’s to the beginning of the end, of summer that is. Good luck in the derby, or the Klondike or whatever other fun plans you may have!

that would just be silly. I will say that one of my favorite August hikes or trail runs is up Eaglecrest. You get the best of both worlds with mountain and lake views. It’s a nice wide trail but also has a good elevation gain. The foliage is different than most

hikes in Juneau and/or Douglas as it starts at a higher elevation then many trails finish. August is also the month that those who are training for the Klondike Road Relay Race are really hitting the pavement. For me, August is usually when I am in the best shape

AUDIBLE: THE HOME REMEDY FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY In my on-line facebook group, Brighter Days, I had posted a link to the April 2012 TEDTalk by Robert Gupta, entitled “Between Music and Medicine”. I shared with the group that this video was profound for me. He talks about that elegant integration of two things that I love - Music & Medicine. This past month, I grabbed a beautiful old Kimball piano that had been posted on-line (Free - You Haul!) and signed my 8 year old daughter up for piano lessons. It has been such joy to sit and play again, to see my girls rush to the bench first thing in the morning. It has been humbling too. I realize that I did not fully value the music lessons I had as a child. Abandoning piano classes my Freshman year of college, I

thought they were too difficult and time demanding when I should be focused on “science/medicine”.

world for healing. The designation, shaman, was then applied to individuals who held an identical role in cultures from Australia to South America and North America. Shaman are regarded as being able to heal by mending the soul. Mending the soul was believed to bring the body back into balance and therefore alleviate illness and allow healing. During the middle ages, it was the religious convents of Europe that taught medicine, arts and music – weaving the three together.

What I did not know then is that Music IS Medicine! Music has been a medicinal tool of healers with rhythm, dance, and music being interwoven into the shamanism of indigenous peoples across the globe. The term Shaman was first recognized by the western world in describing the people of the area of Siberia inhabited by the Mongols and Turks who were regarded as having access to spirits. These Shaman could enter into a trance state during rituals and evoke the help of the spirit By Dr. Summer Beattie, ND

Loss of music in the routine practice of medicine was perhaps partly because of this mingling of music

with religion and ceremony. As advances in science were made, it was common to dismiss anything not seemingly explained by current methodology. It was also likely due to the trend in separating out studies into either natural sciences or humanities. However, the rise of medical specialties in neurology and psychiatrist sparked a return to an interest in music in medicine. That interest has only grown with the development of “music therapy” in the latter half of the 20th century. The ability to study the brain with imaging and measure neurotransmitters has made it possible to quantify and qualify the physical effects of music. CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

AUDIBLE: THE HOME REMEDY FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

All over the world, there has been a surge in peer reviewed scientific study of music in health and its implementation into medical practice. Whole institutions of music therapy study have been established. Practitioners are now studying and using music to help treat conditions such as pain, depression, Autism, ADHD, Parkinson’s & Alzheimer’s disease, stroke and other brain injuries. Music Therapy is being researched and used to support premature babies and the results from a study at Beth Israel Medical Center showed that three methods, a gato box (a drum-like instrument used to simulate two-tone heartbeat rhythm matched to the babies’ breathing and heart rhythms), womb sounds, and lullabies selected and sung by the parents,

all slowed the infants heart rate. Singing was most effective at lowering the heart rate and increasing the amount of time the babies stayed quiet and alert. The Gato box was most effective at improving sucking behavior and the womb sounds improved sleep. Music therapy aslo lowered the parents stress. “Music very much has a way of enhancing quality of life and can, in addition, promote recovery.” I can attest to the fact from both professional and personal experience that type, level and duration of stress is one of the most profound impactors on our health and wellbeing. If music can alleviate this stress and spark healing, then we should absolutely be using it in our everyday lives. We do not need a physician to prescribe

music therapy or a practitioner to deliver this “medicine”. Music is one remedy that is easily available and inexpensive, if not free, for us to implement into our daily lives. I strongly encourage you to create a commitment to implementing intentional music in your home. Not just music designed for entertainment or used as background noise because quite makes you uncomfortable. Music that touches the soul is what you want to find and embrace. You do not have to purchase a piano or start music lessons – though I would highly recommend this even for adults. I recently purchased the album “Weightless” by Marconi Union because it was specifically composed to reduce stress in the listener, and has been shown in studies to literally decrease anxiety

by up to 65%! That’s huge! I play it for my girls and myself as part of our bed-time routine. Still, implementing music therapy at home is as easy as simply starting to hum, whistle or sing a song that soothes or uplifts you. A 2004 graduate of Bastyr University, she served two terms on the board of directors for the Washington Association of Naturopathic Physicians, and has worked in a variety of primary and specialty care settings. This has given her a broad wealth of experience that she now uses in a unique clinical practice with a focus on rejuvenative physical and aesthetic medicine. TRAIL RUNNERS I’m

sure by now everyone has noticed the increased number of runners on the roads and trails. Hopefully it is kind of hard to NOT notice us at this point; it means our safety colors and reflectors are working. Just like when the Woolly Bear caterpillars emerge in the fall, most people take a moment to stop and furrow their brows and say ‘huh, where did all of you come from?’ Hopefully May, June, and July saw sunny days and happy miles, but as we get into August, most of our running community is going to be settling in for the long and hard runs. Before I met some of the amazing women that I know now, I didn’t quite understand why there seemed to be a flood of runners in the fall; people running on trails, mountains, and roads. And sometimes they didn’t exactly seem to be enjoying it.

My father said to me one time, ‘you know, I never see a happy runner. They always seem to be scowling.’ Ron is very concerned with young ladies scowling; he says it gives us eyebrow wrinkles. So then I took it as a personal challenge to send him ridiculous selfies while running of me smiling. Anyone that thinks I take myself seriously on most things will be greatly let down. You should see the SnapChats I send. As with training for any run, it is important to remember that here in Alaska it is out of the house and into the food chain: we share our roads and trails with predators and prey alike. Just last night I watched a black bear lope across the road from a residential area into a grassy field. Running (walking, biking, hiking…) with headphones is probably the worst thing you can do for your safety. You can’t hear other people, you can’t hear animals, and you are shutting yourself off from important cues around you. I just play my music from my phone, and sure, if I pass someone they will hear Ke$ha or Nightwish for a few seconds, but I see it no differently than a normal conversation they would hear. I have run up on deer, bear, wondering dogs, people on bikes, and other people with headphones in who never heard me coming. I’m sure the cardio spike they experience at someone suddenly behind them is quite a shock, as their facial expressions would lead me to believe. For anyone who hasn’t heard ad nauseam about the Klondike Road Relay, it is the local pilgrimage of competitive racers, and runners who rock red dresses and tutus. Though our race is not in the name of any deity, the journey is fraught with mile upon grueling mile, and I’m sure many gods are cursed and called upon. The Klondike Road Relay is a way to ride the shirt tails of the tourist season, and basically have one last multi-town party before we all settle in for the rain and the wind that is biting at our heels as we cross the Canadian border. Expletives of frustration and bemoaning about tourists are common, but with our armor of running shoes and bright colors,

we flood our tourist-occupied town of Skagway and wine and dine at our favorite summer restaurants with only the stragglers of summer wandering the streets. Whitehorse welcomes us with excitedly honking horns and dashboard waves, and they are incredibly friendly to their Sister City.* I hope that they feel as warm of a welcome from us. The first race was six years before my parents would move to Alaska, and five years before I was born. What started off as a mere 25 teams in 1983, is now 153 registered teams. Last year we had a team from ‘Merica! that came up from Corralitos (by Santa Cruz), California. In 2015, 648 men and 1009 women pounded the 110 miles from Skagway to Whitehorse. But runners are not left alone to the roadside wilds, as most teams have between one and three support cars that leap frog them through the 21 hour race. And with 153 teams, that is quite an army of support! With some quick math, that could be an extra 459 people waiting for you at the finish line to cheer you on and cheers with beers. Some teams rent an RV and drive as one team, while other teams split up and trade off hotel keys and enthusiasm at designated checkpoints. The Klondike has welcomed us with northern lights, as September nights are dark enough and the start of the aurora season. Snow and frost have surprised runners coming over the pass. Moose have waited patiently for a break in runners to cross the road, ambling across without much concern for the dreary trickle of people. Bear have been spotted and shooed off the road by trucks where runners will soon wind along the lake shoreline. And probably the most entertaining sightings are the dresses, costumes, tutus, crowns, neon colors, pompoms, and painted cars. Several years in a row, a truck pulls a wood fire hot tub behind them, and we all want to be their friend. Then of course, you have to respect the teams who are actually serious teams, where splits matter and training has

been intense. But I would venture to say that the majority of teams are not in it to win it, but rather win leg 11. * http://www.juneau.org/clerk/Sister_ Cities/CBJs_Sister_Cities.php

5 WAYS TO CREATE

big luxury IN A SMALL master bathroom

(BPT) - If you’re thinking about remodeling your small bathroom, you may know that studies show updating a bathroom of any size can increase the value of a home. However, there’s a statistic from a Houzz survey you might not know: 75 percent of people who renovate a master bathroom don’t make it bigger. Enlarging a small master bathroom is often impractical; you may need to take space from another room, or extend an exterior wall to accomplish an expansion. Both options have disadvantages and costs. The truth is, you don’t need to move walls or spend like a home improvement show host in order to create big luxury in a small master bathroom. Here are five ways to make a small bathroom space feel lavish and spa-like: 1. Rethink the shower stall versus tub debate. Many large luxury bathrooms have a separate shower and soaking tub. In a small bathroom, which may be used by multiple members and generations

cost-effective choice. For a reasonable price, you can use quality materials to significantly boost the upscale feeling of your small bathroom. 4. Add pizzazz to functional elements. You can increase a small bathroom’s feeling of extravagance by adding some flare to functional items like faucets, mirrors and cabinet hardware. For a modest investment, you can turn everyday, often-overlooked elements into items that underscore the overall beauty of the room.

Small bathrooms can be big on luxury and comfort, with the American Standard bright white Americast tub accented with a high-style Colony PRO shower/tub faucet set and matching bathroom sink faucet, all for an affordable price.

of a household, creating an upscale feeling by separating the tub from the shower might not be a realistic option. Instead, look for ways to boost the appeal of your tub/shower space, perhaps by choosing a visually appealing, bright-white model for an updated, yet classic, style. 2. Step up your shower game.

The shower isn’t just where you get clean; it’s also a morning wake-up tool or end-of-day relaxation therapy treatment. Deluxe showers often feature multiple jets, rainfall showerheads and hand showers. Replacing an ordinary showerhead with a shower system is a cost-effective and easy way to add a luxurious experience to the shower. Options like the GROHE Retro-Fit Shower System offer a drenching rain showerhead, along with an integrated hand shower for ultimate convenience. Since the main showerhead is mounted on a movable arm, you can position the spray overhead (to function as a rainfall shower) or at an angle for additional comfort, all with the choice of spray patterns. Even better, the system works with existing plumbing, eliminating any need to open the wall to change piping. For added indulgence, consider a shower system with an elegant brushed nickel finish to elevate the look of your overall shower and bathroom decor. 3. Splurge on luxury materials. Yes, materials like travertine tile or granite countertops can be costly, but when you’re renovating a small bathroom, you need less of those materials. Adding marble tile above a small tub/shower area will cost far less than outfitting a large walk-in shower. Replacing a modestly sized vanity with a new cabinet and granite countertop won’t be nearly as expensive as redoing a large, double-sink vanity. When you have less real estate to refurbish, high-end materials can be a

For example, replacing an ordinary or outdated faucet with a modern-style option from the Colony PRO bath collection is an affordable way to improve aesthetics and functionality. Sleek styling translates well into modern bathroom design. Plus, single- or double-handle design means that faucets are user-friendly for children and adults of all ages and mobility levels. Replacing a typical bathroom medicine cabinet or mirror with a luxury model is another way to elevate a small bathroom to premium status. Today’s medicine cabinets come with an array of leading-edge features, such as defogging functions, built-in electrical outlets, night lights, USB outlets, interior lights and set-in magnifying mirrors. 5. Lighten up the space. Finally, adding more natural light into a small master bathroom can make the space seem larger and more appealing. If your small bathroom already has a window, forgo blinds or shades in favor of easy-to-apply privacy film. Readily available in home improvement stores or online, in a breadth of simple or fancy patterns, this opaque film allows light to enter the room while providing the necessary privacy. If your budget allows, consider adding a skylight for natural lighting and passive ventilation. Even if your small master bathroom is on the ground floor, it may be possible to use a tube skylight to bring more natural light into the space. Achieving ultimate comfort and luxury in your small-space bathroom is at your fingertips, easily and affordably.

Huckleberry Coffee Cake

Recipe

CAKE BATTER

1 ½ cup flour (organic spelt, almond, coconut) 2 ½ tsp baking powder (aluminum free) ½ tsp sea salt 1 egg, beaten ¾ cup organic sugar or honey 1/3 cup butter melted ½ cup milk 1 tsp vanilla 1 tsp orange zest 2 cups wild berries, rinsed

STREUSEL TOPPING ¼ cup organic brown sugar ¼ cup organic sugar ¼ cup organic flour mix (whatever you used for the cake) 3Tbsp butter, softened 1 tsp cinnamon Vaccinium Alaskaense or Alaskan Huckleberry are prolific from Crater Lake National park in Southern Oregon to all of Southeast Alaska and well into the Yukon. Harvesting from spring (for flower harvest) to September with August being my favorite month to fill up my baskets. We have the following sub species: V. ugliginosum, V. caespitosum, V. nivictum, V. ovalifolium and V. alaskensis V. ovatum, V. menbraneceum, V. scoparium , V. parvifolium with the last five commonly harvested and found here in Southeast. Did you know there are medicinal uses such as, the regular use of blueberry leaf-alfalfa tea helps maintain a stable blood sugar level? Medical studies have registered decreases in blood sugar levels after administration of the leaf extracts. Huckleberry leaf tincture is used to treat hypoglycemia. Blueberry fruits are high in iron and mineral salts. Use the fruit with milk for convalescents and tubercular patients. Eating the fresh berries has been observed to regulate bowel action, stimulate appetite, end intestinal putrefaction (which produces gas and flatulence), and expel ascarids.

Blueberry juice is a good mouthwash and is reported helpful for sore throat and inflamed gums. Leaf and bark decoctions are recommended as a gargle for mouth and throat sores; sip the astringent decoction if you are troubled by diarrhea. Leaves are also antiseptic and used in teas for urinary disorders. According to the Alaskan Flower Essence Project, an infusion of the flowers of bog blueberry, V. uliginosum, helps and individual become more receptive to life. A flower essence is an infusion of fresh flowers in pure water. I know you had my favorite red huckleberries last month for the fourth, but I had to share my favorite breakfast too! Seriously never enough berries and it was a cold spring, so make sure to save a few for the bears, they seem to be needing a few extra this year. If you encounter a bear on the trail, or in your campsite, stop what you are doing and evaluate the situation. Identify yourself by speaking in a calm, appeasing tone. Back away slowly, preferably in the direction you came. Walk, don’t run, and keep your eye on the bear so you can see how it will react. In most cases, the bear will flee.

CAUTION: An excess of blueberry and huckleberry leaf tea is said to spark minor symptoms of poisoning. Normal doses are generally quite harmless. As always, proceed slowly until you’re familiar with how your own system reacts. But no leaf tea in this recipe, my favorite breakfast is coffee cake, I can’t eat kimchee and kale every morning, so during the summer I love to make coffee cake, with fresh berries of whatever kind I can get my hands on. Also a note that I’ve started using almost all spelt flour in my recipes instead of wheat due to glyphosate contamination. If you are reducing glutens, try organic spelt, it’s much easier to digest and you can also sprout coffee cake overnight. If you haven’t heard of Tony Mitra’s book Poison Foods of North America h t t p s : / / w w w. a m a zo n . c o m / P O I SON-FOODS-NORTH-AMERICA-navigating/dp/1520976429 please check it out… to see the food test results from over 7,000 foods the Canadian government has done on chemicals in our food. Eat Wild, eat clean and enjoy the summer bounty!

½ tsp cardamom Sift flour, dry ingredients, toss two tablespoons on fresh berries in separate bowl and set aside, liberally grease and crumb/flour 9x9 or loaf pans, place oven rack in the middle of the oven at 375 degrees. Beat the butter on medium speed until it’s smooth and golden, at least a minute. Add sugar/honey and beat for another 3-4 minutes. Add in salt, egg, orange zest, vanilla and milk slowly add in dry ingredients, making sure it’s fully incorporated before adding more, then carefully fold in huckleberries. Pour into prepared pans and level. Mix streusel topping until nice and crumbly, sprinkle evenly over the batter. Bake for 45 minutes until toothpick draws clean. Cool 30 minutes if you can wait that long to take out of the pan, or use a small sharp knife and serve warm with a pat of butter and cup of coffee. From my breakfast table to yours, Enjoy
