What incredible weather we’ve had this past month and I can only hope that it continues into August. I don’t know about you but this summer has been full of fantastic memories, itchy bug bites and peeling sunburns. The unusually warm, sunny weather has me doing things I haven’t done in years; like drying laundry outside on a line, ordering a slip-n-slide, watering the lawn, and wading in the ocean. August is the month of the Golden North Salmon Derby and the beginning of the end of summer. August is one of my favorite months for fish, picks (berry picking), and hikes. I’m typically not one for sport hunting or competitive fishing but I’ll admit it, I love fishing in the salmon derby. Every year that I fish it, I buy my ticket with the feeling that I’m going to be lucky this year, I just know it! Usually it’s a bust for me on the fishing end but I always have fun. I love the excitement, the snack food, watching

CONTEXT BATCHING Or, for you, maybe “Food Prep” means cleaning the fridge and pantry on “Cleaning Day” (perhaps Monday since Mondays are already the designated day of the week everyone hates - lol) menu planning on Thursday so you can grocery shop on Saturday and food prep on either that same day or the next. There is no strict right or wrong way to batch tasks other than that they have to be contextually similar enough to allow flow and focus. Only you can really know what will work for you and it might require some trial and error. Pick a day for errands, a day for returning phone calls, a day for paying bills, etc. Try to limit social media too a designated time as well! The goal is to create rhythm and routine to as

many aspects of your life as possible. I am by no means an expert in this area; I’m sure there are plenty of internet resources available to learn more, and I’d love to hear about hacks for better batching you find and try. Context batching should actually make it easier to complete things much more quickly, make your mind sharper, increase how much you’re able to accomplish, and actually decrease how much you have to do simply because of efficiency. Fireweed Harvests Fireweed Jelly Ingredients 8 cups fireweed blossoms (no stems)

¼ cup lemon juice, organic 4 ½ cups water 2 pkgs of pectin (I like Pomona’s brand it’s vegan, gluten free and GMO free sadly there is no commercial organic pectin on the market) 5 cups of sugar, organic Pick, wash and measure fireweed blossoms, in large saucepan add flowers, lemon juice, water and boil for 10 minutes. Strain flowers from the jelly, add pectin and return to boil. Hard boil mixture for 1 minute and pour into sterilized jars and seal in boiling water bath with ½ inch coverage for 20 minutes. Additions for flavor or coloring can be salmonberry, blueberry, huckleberry, nagoon, rhubarb as well, but highly suggest to make one batch just fireweed to have it’s pure essence. Fireweed Infused Honey (Mel) Ingredients
Clean, sterile and dry jar with a tight fitting lid Directions Next you need to make sure your jar is sterile by either placing it in hot, boiled water or sanitizing it in the dishwasher. Be sure to let it dry all the way before making your honey because water can cause your honey to spoil which would be sad! Next fill your dry, clean jar about ¼ of the way with dry herb. Fill the jar the rest of the way with honey. Watch carefully as you may see some funny, slow moving honey bubbles journey to the top of the jar and pop! The herbs may absorb some of the honey (or was it the fairies visiting for a snack that made your honey level go down?) and you might need to add more honey to the jar. Once your jar is full, put the lid on top. Next is the hard part, waiting! It is best to wait at least a week for the herbs to infuse into the honey before you eat it. Try and flip your jar over a couple of times a day to keep the herbs covered in honey. You might want to place the jar on a plate for this so that honey doesn’t get all over the place, should the jar leak. When you feel your honey has infused for long enough you have two options. You can either strain the herbs out of the honey. (I like to make a big pot of tea with the leftover herbs!) Or you can eat the honey with the herbs still mixed in! Yummy! Be sure to label your herbal honey with the herb you used and the date you made your honey.

Lemon juice, as needed 1/4 cup applesauce 2 teaspoons nettle leaf powder (or slippery elm root) 1/4 teaspoon fireweed powder (dried and ground blossoms) 2 ounces pomegranate juice Optional: 2 tablespoons honey (or fireweed mel) If using fresh fruit, remove rough peels. Add 1 teaspoon of lemon juice for each cup of light colored fruit (to reduce oxidation). Place all the ingredients in a blender or food processor. Blend until smooth (to the consistency of commercial baby food). Thin with juice or tea if necessary. Use a spatula to spread the puree on parchment paper or a silicone mat to 1/8 inch thick. Dehydrate at 135°F/57°C until the texture is pliable and not sticky. The rate of drying will depend on climate. (During the summers here in southern California, my leathers take about 2 1/2 hours to dry in the dehydrator.) While still warm, roll and cut the leather into pieces. If using a silicone mat or plastic, peel the leather off carefully and roll it in parchment paper. If drying on parchment paper, roll the leather in the paper and cut. Store the leather in an airtight container in a cool, dark location. Fruit leather will keep for a month at room temperature or up to a year in the freezer.
