Letter from the Publisher Happy August everyone! Hope you are cooling off from the hot weather and your lungs are healed from the smoke and dust from our dry weather.

And then there was two

was a full-time job to get my daughter to sleep when she was a baby, and it still is. We knew every creaky floor board in the house and spent hours sitting on bouncy yoga balls soothing her cries. This new guy sleeps well, and with ease. He is a quiet observer, and pretty content just to look around and take it all in. He loves a bottle. He gets cranky when tired but is easily consolable. I am still learning things about him and her, and will continue to for the rest of my life. They require different needs at the same stages in life and that’s great.

This month I want to talk about having more than one kiddo. Why didn’t anyone tell me it feels like I have more than two! Comparing: This, by far, has been the biggest lesson I’ve learned in the journey of parenting two kids. Do. Not. Compare. Them. Every baby, toddler, kiddo and so on is different. In my case, pretty much extreme opposites from what I can tell thus far. My daughter who just turned four is a ball of energy. She’s never enjoyed sleeping, doesn’t want to miss out on anything (total FOMO), never took to a bottle, pretty picky when it comes to food but likes odd foods like her dad (sea salt and vinegar chips, green olives) and so on. When my son was born I didn’t really think about “getting to know” him, I thought I knew how he’d like to be nurtured. Boy was I wrong! As I said he is a completely different baby. It

Naptime: I’ve never whisper-screamed so much in my life. Though my son is a good sleeper, he still wakes up easily. And my daughter is a wrecking ball of noise and energy. She never stops talking, asking questions, telling stories, singing. And that’s great, except when it’s naptime and I want to enjoy just watching one kid. The phrase “shhhhhhh, don’t wake the baby...” gets said a lot, to the point that I start feeling guilty about it. I don’t really know what the answer is.

I know routine is important but I have yet to figure it out. I am a wing-it type of parent most of the time and we wing most days depending on weather. Bedtime: Sweet, sweet sleep. Say what now? Dylan is a great sleeper so the anxiety of not getting enough sleep is fading. My daughter however is still a night owl. I am very lucky that my husband has taken on the task of putting her to bed. It is no easy feat. I go to bed much earlier than them because, surprise, Dylan is a morning person. I am a light sleeper so I can hear Ari running around, demands from both of them back and forth and the typical bedtime shenanigans that happens with most kids. The Car: Oh dear god, getting everyone into the car without tears is near impossible. Baby hates the carseat, and when it’s not moving he hates it even more. I’ve forgotten the anxiety I experienced when the stoplight turns red and I am just waiting for the crying to begin. Ari is currently in the “I can do

it” phase, so that’s a good ten minutes of letting her climb in and buckle the straps. I run over to the other side, snap the carseat in and run to the driver’s seat while my four year old remembers she forgot a toy inside and she NEEDS it. If the car idles too long baby will cry, if I don’t get the toy toddler will cry. Cool. Cleaning: I feel like this is an endless task and some days I ask myself “why even bother?!” It’s especially hard to keep track of two kids and clean or pick stuff off the floor when I have baby strapped to me in a carrier. I do a lot of squats. These are the days I realize we have so much stuff. Too much stuff ! When and where did we get all this stuff and how do I get rid of it. How to Manage a Side Hustle Have you heard the term ‘side hustle’? It refers to ways of making money outside the usual 9 to 5 – a way to hustle some cash on the side, as it were. There’s many reasons to begin a side hustle. It appeals to people who are skilled at hobbies and want to make some dough by doing what they love. Others take a side hustle because they have the time and could use the cash, either for day-to-day expenses or to save for something special. Managing a small business can be surprisingly involved, even when it’s truly on-the-side. Most who attempt it glean their wisdom through trial and error; but I’ve compiled years of tips and tricks learned the hard way, so you don’t have to. I hope this article can help you get hustling – minus all

the blood, sweat, and tears. Ways to Side Hustle We’ll delve into how to manage your side hustle, but first let’s talk a bit more about the ways you can do one. Here’s a few avenues to explore: Download an App: These days, there’s a variety of options for making money on the side with your smartphone. Rover is an app that connects dog owners with dog lovers for sitting and walking. Uber and Lyft are car-sharing apps that essentially allow you to use your car as a taxi. According to TripAdvisor, drivers are very needed in Southeast. Turo is an app that allows you to rent your car for a daily fee. There’s not much going on in Southeast; but if

you have a car you’re not driving, why not list it? Instacart is an app that lets you provide grocery shopping services for a fee. DoorDash brings “I buy, you fly” to a whole new level, paying you to deliver food from restaurants around town. Airbnb allows you to rent out living space like a hotel room, turning your rarely-used guest room into a money maker. It can take a lot of time; but if you enjoy hosting, it can be a wonderful opportunity. Tourism: Juneau visitors alone are expected to exceed 1.3 million this summer, so it’s safe to say there’s a whole lot of money to be made in Southeast Alaska’s tourism. In addition to taking advantage of apps above, think about your relationship with the area, do you love hiking? Perhaps you could get a summer gig leading walks around the Tongass. Maybe the food available in the forest moves you, do you have a way with fiddleheads? Find a way to get cooking. (And, of course, ensure plans are legally-compliant before you begin.) Get Creative: I think it’s the weather in Southeast that make its locals so creative. (And thoughtful.) The activities that keep you sane in the winter could also be stellar opportunities to side hustle. If you have a way with words, look into freelance writing. I’ve also had great luck offering portrait paintings, especially pets, but maybe you can create killer jewelry or make magic with stained glass. Visualizing your objectives within the time they need to be completed in can make all of the difference in effective prioritizing. Taxes: Keep impeccable books. Notate all of the money that you’ve invoiced, received, and spent in regard to your hustle. Doing your taxes may be a simple process, but it could also be quite intricate depending on what kind of hustle/

small business you’re running and how much money it makes. If you earn significantly year-round, you may want to consider quarterly estimated IRS payments. Don’t be afraid to consult a professional. Website: If you’re doing something that revolves around an app, you don’t really need a website, but with nearly anything else it’s probably a good idea – and it’s not nearly as daunting as it seems. While having high quality images and content will always take care; this day in age, the actual website building can be easy-peasy. (Wix and Weebly come highly recommended.) Social Media: The opportunities for small businesses in social media aren’t as exciting as they used to be, but it’s still free marketing. It’s

especially worth your time if you’ve got a good story behind your hustle, as storytelling is a great way to connect with potential clients. (Don’t be afraid to show some personality.) If you’re a lover of succinct statements, go Twitter. If you love images, go Instagram. Facebook isn’t as effective for business posting, but it’s still worth keeping an up-to-date Page; they’re focusing on group-building, so that may appeal to some as well. One more thought before you get hustling: involve your community. While this is great advice for anyone anywhere, Southeast communities are uniquely tight. Getting involved will be great word-of-mouth, as well as generally helping you live your best life – and isn’t that what having

Southern Ambrosia Poke Cake INGREDIENTS: 4 cups cake flour, organic 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp baking powder ½ tsp salt 6oz butter, (Kerry gold)

4 eggs 2oz coconut oil 1 cup sugar, organic 1 can coconut milk 1 can crushed pineapple 1 can mandarin oranges ½ tsp vanilla 1 box coconut J-ello pudding 1 ½ cup heavy whip cream ½ cup sugar, organic 1 Tbls. Cornstarch, organic

Preheat oven to 350 degrees, prep cake pans Sift dry ingredients, all except pudding mix, mix butter and coconut oil in kitchen aid, add in sugar slowly once well beaten, add vanilla, salt and eggs till well incorporated, add in pudding mix. Slowly add in flour mixture alternating with half the can of coconut milk, fold in pineapple and drained mandarins. Drain mandarin juice into saucepan and warm add the remaining coconut milk to the sauce pan, when up to temp add in cornstarch and stir until thick.

Something about summer speaks to lazy day bbq’s with family or friends and a few comfort food dishes that are easy and always foolproof like this Southern Ambrosia Cake. I may have previously mentioned in one of my articles that I loved the Knudsen Ambrosia juice as a child, it was a heavenly tropical treat living at a logging camp and this cake instantly takes me right back to those happy memories. It’s dense, moist, and full of surprises (much like the Tongass) just a wee bit tropical and of Southern decent. Having worked in Cajun restaurants and loving Southern desserts, in general, it’s a win-win plus fast, it’s a dump and bake type of dessert. I should also note if you are looking for a larger slice of cake, double the recipe to get the necessary height but it will be very dense and delicious! From my heavenly memories to yours, enjoy!

Pour batter into prepared pans and cook 30 minutes until golden brown and toothpick comes clean. When cake comes out of the oven poke large holes all over with chopstick or something of similar diameter. Pour 2/3 of the mandarin coconut sauce over the cake to soak. In a cold and clean bowl, whip heavy cream, after 2 minutes add sugar, after two more minutes fold in the remaining coconut mandarin sauce. Frost the cake once completely cooled.
