I
was never the type known for being handy with a hammer or proficient with a power saw. I took a mandatory wood shop class in 8th grade, but I’m good on bookends and bird feeders at the moment. What I need, however, is to knock down a few walls (which I believe are load-bearing), add a tile backsplash in the kitchen, replace countertops and put up trim throughout the downstairs. All are things much more complex than bookends and bird feeders, so I’m teaching myself to become a do-it-yourselfer. I’ve started with some small projects around the house for practice before tackling the big stuff. A home is the biggest financial investment most of us will ever make, but with time and effort it’s also is an investment that can grow sooner than later. Make no mistake, remodeling and updating your home is a timeconsuming and costly venture, but it’s also one that will increase how much you enjoy your living space and the overall equity you have in your home. The key, however, is to spend less than what the added value of the improvements will be. That usually means doing as much work as possible yourself.

There’s no shortage of information for aspiring handymen and handywomen, you just have to pick a source. Detailed books and manuals can be found in most hardware stores, and plenty of instruction can be found online and on TV. I personally am a big fan of HGTV and the DIY Network. One of my guilty pleasures, I’ll admit, is watching renovation disasters by other do-it-yourselfers (they serve as a reminder of what not to do and when to throw in the towel and hire a pro). Knowing when to hire a professional contractor and put one’s ego aside is important. Some jobs need professional expertise, even if it’s just having a contractor inspect your work while it’s in progress and upon completion. I personally have drawn the line at plumbing and electrical work.

The Dog Days of Rental Shopping Lack of pet-friendly rentals leave some dog owners out in the cold By Charles L. Westmoreland Southeast Living Juneau is a dog-friendly town, just look on any sidewalk, trail or beach for the proof. From the doggie day care centers for pampered pooches to the dog treats offered at coffee shops and banks, Alaskans love their dogs. But finding a dog-friendly rental in Juneau can be a “ruff” and lengthy process. Most rental units here don’t allow pets, and that could be driving some people away. Sander Schijvens, CEO of Wostmann & Associates, Inc., an information technology company with offices in Juneau and Anchorage, said a couple of his employees have had
trouble finding a pet-friendly rental in Juneau despite months of searching. One is considering leaving Juneau and perhaps telecommuting from Southcentral Alaska or another Southeast community. “The reality is that with a small business you’re also a family, and I want to do what I can to help out,” he said. “You never want to lose a good employee” because of housing issues. Schijvens said that having an uncertain housing situation can be stressful and a distraction for employees. Two of his 30 staff currently are having trouble finding petfriendly rentals. One difficulty, he said, is that those new to town don’t know where to look.
Charles L. Westmoreland / Southeast Living
It’s not uncommon in Juneau for a rental to become occupied with new tenants before ever being listed. And during a search on Craig’s List most of rentals listed explicitly stated “No pets.” “It seems the best way to find a place is just to know someone,” Schijvens said. He isn’t the only professional to have available housing be a thorn in his company’s side. A 2010 study by the Juneau Economic Development Council found that more than half of
businesses surveyed considered available/affordable housing to be a key issue among employees. But knowing the right people certainly helps, said one Juneau renter. “I was surprised how difficult it was to find landlords willing to rent to a pet owner. Juneau is such a dogfriendly town,” said Meggie Reinholdt, a 28-year-old case manager who moved to Juneau in 2008. Continued on Page 14

How To: Wall-Mounted Shelving By Charles L. Westmoreland Southeast Living If you’re tired of assembling shelving made of particle board or want to make the most of your homes awkward nooks and crannies, then wall-mounted shelving is as easy and cost-effective as it gets. The shelving, which consists of metal standards, adjustable brackets and ready-made shelves, is perfect for home offices, walkin closets, laundry rooms, pantries, garages and kids’ rooms. The shelves are easy to install and even easier to adjust whenever needed. The only tools you need are a power drill, level, measuring tape and pencil. Step 1. The metal standards need to be secure so it’s essential that you support the shelving by mounting the standards into wall studs. Trying to

the shelves from gradually bowing under pressure. Note: Reliable stud finders can be purchased for $15-$25 at practically any hardware store. It’s worthwhile to invest in a stud finder with multiple settings that can also locate wiring inside the walls. That extra feature doesn’t cost much extra and can save you from drilling into your electrical wiring.

wall extend the length of the tracks and that you have marked the center of the stud. The distance between tracks will vary depending on the weight of what will go on the shelves. In the example provided tracks were placed about 20 inches apart. Never go more than three feet apart in order to prevent
Step. 2 Using paper and pencil draft what you want the shelves to look like once installed. Are you trying to wrap shelving around a big screen TV, or perhaps make the most use of wall with odd nooks? Essentially you want to take into account any objects you need the shelving to form around to ensure that your pieces fit within the designated area and that there are enough studs to support the weight. Continued on Page 5
Continued from Page 4 Step 3. Using two-inch wood screws secure the first track to the wall, ensuring the track is vertically level. Don’t tighten the top screw too much. You want the metal standard to be secure but to also freely hang. Once the track is level insert your bottom screw. Next hold the second track in place while you use the level to ensure both tracks are even across the top. Once the second track is level insert the top screw. Now add a set of brackets and a shelf and check once more to ensure the shelf is level. Then you can finish driving in the remaining screws. Repeat this step for other mounts. Now you’re ready to start placing the remaining brackets and shelves. Note: It’s crucial that all wall mounts be perfectly level so that weight is distributed evenly. A fun way to make your shelving mesh with a room is to stain shelves made of natural wood and to paint

the brackets and metal standards. This last part is simpler and will save time if done before the actual installation.
Wall-mounted shelving won’t work in every room in your home, nevertheless is remains a quick, convenient and affordable alterna-
tive to standard bookshelves. In some instances it may even require less assembly time and be much cheaper.

Reinholdt said even when she offered to pay a pet deposit or additional monthly rent for her dog that “no one seemed willing to take a chance.” “We missed out on some amazing places because of having a dog, even though this is a great town to raise one,” she said. “We must have been rejected by dozens of potential landlords. We dreaded having to ask the question, ‘Do you allow pets?’ We knew the answer would be ‘no.’” Reinholdt said that she, her boyfriend and their Golden Retriever Dexter eventually found a petfriendly rental after deciding to work with a property manager in Juneau. The property manager was able to convince an out-of-town homeowner to rent to them, she said. “We love living in Juneau but it’s a shame it was so difficult to find a pet-friendly rental in such a petfriendly town,” she said. Stacey James, a 23-year-old seasonal worker who moved to Juneau in May, said she spent months searching for a pet-friendly rental before deciding to leave her Labrador-mix Hunter with friends back home in Washington.

“I love to hike and Hunter keeps me company, and I wish I could have brought him here,” she said. “Everybody in Juneau has a dog except me. I could never stay here though without Hunter. He would definitely like it here though.” One local property manager who asked their name be withheld said there are several reasons why landlords don’t rent to pet owners. “When someone owns the home they usually just don’t want to take a chance the pet owner isn’t responsible,” he said. “A pet deposit usually will only replace carpet in one room.” The property manager said condo associations and apartment complexes usually have different reasons for prohibiting pets. “With multi-unit housing it’s often about concern that a dog will be a nuisance to neighbors, either by barking all the time or having a dog owner who doesn’t clean up after the animal. “But there are landlords who have pets and understand how difficult it can be to find a place. I’d recommend calling property managers around town. We have contacts and can lend a hand with searching.”
