here are many health and environmental reasons I avoid synthetic fragrances that I’ll share with you another time; the holidays are notorious for aromatic gifts such as perfumes, colognes, candles, etc. so I’ll just leave you with: please choose pure essential oils. For this article, as thoughts turn to Christmas and one of my favorite scents fills our home, I want to share a little about the essence of an iconic seasonal aroma frankincense. Boswellia carterii is the Latin name for one species of tree that produces a distinctive and evocatively fragrant resin. Known as olibanum or “Oil of Lebanon”, it is most often recognized as frankincense, the name believed to have been derived from the Frankish (French) Knights of the Crusades who first brought the coveted product to Europe.
gly, knarled bark of the shrub like tree that produces a thick resinous sap for harvest. During the months of May through September, cuts are made in the bark. As the sap flows, it hardens into “tears” of resin which are later scraped from the tree. The essential oil is usually extracted via steam distillation. While very fine quality resins used for fragrance and cosmetics may have a light yellow to golden brown color, the most pure resin appears almost translucent. It is the pure resins, those free of black or brown spots that are edible for internal medical use. Frankincense, which has been used medicinally and religiously for over five thousand years, is once

Ancient Ayurvedic, Egyptian, Middle Eastern, and Chinese cultures have a rich history of using Frankincense to treat a vast range of conditions from plague to baldness. Most popularly it was used for digestive complaints, wound healing, and for balancing female hormones. Egyptians are noted to have used the sweet smoke of burning frankincense in between bathing to mask bad odor and then crushing the ash to be used for the infamous black eyeliner seen in their drawings – kohl. It has long been used in topical skin care to decrease redness, sooth dry and irritated skin, and decrease fine lines. Practitioners continue to recommend the use of Frankincense oil in massage, baths

Frankincense is thought of during the Christmas season because it is one of the three gifts brought by the Magi to the baby Jesus. At this time in history, Frankincense was perhaps more valuable than even the gold they brought – a gift certainly befitting the new King of the Jews. This gift would also have been clearly recognized as an act of worship as Jewish priests had long been burning frankincense in temple ceremonies. This tradition carried over into Roman Catholicism where the use of frankincense in liturgy went through periods of disfavor and renewal. Frankincense was also used by many Middle Eastern
civilizations in religious ritual, including the ancient Egyptians and Islamic cultures. When burned, it was a symbol of prayer rising to heaven. Today the oil is still used by Jewish, Christian, and Islamic worshipers to anoint newborn babies or individuals moving into an experience of new spiritual birth.

BEFORE & AFTER PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
CLIENT NEEDS & WANTS:
This living room makeover was a part of an extensive remodel of the main floor of the home and so it was the client’s wish to bring this space up-to-date but still maintain its original essence. While this room was once used extensively for entertaining guests, it was now rarely enjoyed and the commanding mountain views were merely being passed by and hardly ever seen through the small hallway pass through. Per the designers’ proposal, this space was opened up to the adjoining rooms and incorporates new and inviting features that will carry this client’s lifestyle into the next chapter of life!
• Achieve a sophisticated design and layout that can be enjoyed in both formal and casual settings • Maintain a neutral color palette for art and antique collections to be displayed within • Achieve a barrier to protect furnishings from the three dogs (an alternative to the baby gate) • A gas fireplace to replace the original wood burning fireplace that was never used • Replace plush carpeting with new • Incorporate a television that can be hidden away during formal gatherings
HOW THE CLIENT NEEDS & WANTS WERE MET: • The new furniture layout creates a more intimate setting for the homeowner and maintains enough seating for a number of guests. Intimacy within this large room was also achieved by framing in the new

carpeting; creating a smaller foot print for the furniture layout and relocating the circulation path around the room. • Full-lite pocket doors with beveled glass were added between all rooms to increase circulation and to also capitalize on the mountain views and natural lighting. These doors are also used to close off each space from one another; achieving a chic alternative to baby/dog gates. • A neutral color palette was maintained throughout the furnishings, carpeting, and wall color to direct focus to the art and antique collections. The new gas fireplace, accent tables, and display/ media cabinetry introduce an added sense of warmth to this monochromatic setting, while greatly updating this space as well.
& antique curio cabinet. • The darker stained wood hearth and mantel directly relate to the built-in cabinetry, accent tables, & antique curio cabinet. This repetitive stain color also contrasts nicely against the off-white furnishings and carpeting. • The fireplace facade is further transformed by the porcelain tile in a rustic metallic finish. This industrial tile directly relates to the new lighting and hardware found throughout the home and pays homage to the homestead; situated above Treadwell Mine. • The 42” diameter coffee table serves as an additional surface for displaying floral arrangements and other treasures.
• Wood flooring is installed in a picture frame layout that borders the inlaid carpeting
• The wood flooring border establishes a clear circulation path around the furniture setting and increases the visual connection and flow between this living area and adjoining rooms.
• Tiled fireplace with custom wood hearth and mantel; individual tiles were hand chosen to achieve continual flow of pattern.
• The grand scale of the floor lamp provides adequate task lighting for the client’s preferred seat and its transparent glass base minimizes any obstruction of view. • The large, curved sofa is proportional to the room, provides ample seating when entertaining guests, and is the perfect piece to stretch out and comfortably watch television from. HOW DOES THE PROJECT ENHANCE THE STRUCTURE AESTHETICALLY? • The symmetrical furniture layout is counterbalanced by the asymmetrical placement of the lamp, accent tables,
• The wall of windows and commanding views are counterbalanced by the mirrored backs of the built-in cabinetry and a collection of antique mirrors that reflect the majestic view & natural lighting.

Home Maintenance The weather has turned and after a long sunny summer spent outdoors, I find myself indoors after a day’s work. It’s dark early and it’s dark late into the morning, and with shorter days come cooler temperatures and the fluffy white stuff that brings us back to the outside. It seems fall has all but slipped away and some home maintenance may have been neglected. It’s still not too late. Yearly and bi-yearly maintenance on the exterior of the home will help with the durability of your home and help keep the inhabitants healthy. The exterior of the windows and doors should be checked at least once a year, however, the older the home is, I would probably be checking windows and doors in the spring and fall. Next, do a walk around the house checking all the siding and paint. A good sign that something may be wrong will be bubbled or peeling paint, as well as, bubbled or bowed siding. Another thing to look for
while checking the siding is any sign of critters and insect intrusion. With the introduction of exterior insulation many homes are now a very attractive place for insects and little animals, like shrews and mice to burrow into. This could greatly affect the insulating value of your home. Another part of the siding and exterior to check is where decks connect to the side of a home. The deck to house connection is where I see a lot of problems. Usually the connection takes a beating from the weather and water splashes against the home creating water problems and intrusion especially if the deck is not flashed and connected properly to the home. Drainage around a home plays a very important role in keeping a home dry and healthy. If the slope around your home is not adequate water has the opportunity to back into the home if it is below grade or the home has a crawlspace. All a home needs is about a 2% slope away from the home for water to drain away from the home. A 2% slope equates to about a 1 inch drop for every 4 foot. Check your gutter downspouts. The downspouts should extend approximately 4’ away
from the home or into a separate drain that extends away from the home, so any roof water draining will not back into the home. Vents and intakes are another very important and usually need a quick cleaning twice a year. Dry vents are very important to check because lint build up can become a fire hazard and affect the efficiency of the dryer itself. Other exhaust vents include a kitchen vent and heat recover ventilator vents. These should be cleaned and checked that any flappers are working properly. If your home has a heat recovery ventilator then check the intake as well. The intake of a HRV will often collect a lot of insects during the summer months.

Home Maintenance O
ne quick check of your outdoors spigots will save a lot of grief in the spring thaw. Make sure all hoses are not attached to the hose bib as the temperatures start to drop. What happens is that when a hose is left on the spigot, water cannot drain properly out of the cold part of the hose bib with a hose attached, thus freezing just inside the wall cavity. When the spring thaw comes, the frozen hose bib that is cracked by the ice expanding will release about seven gallons of water per minute into your home, properly flooding it.
trees, shrubs, or bushes in contact with a home can create problems with moisture, insects, or just plain rub a house the wrong way. Look for any dead limbs or trees that could fall when the Taku winds come blowing. This type of maintenance will help keep roofs and gutters clear. One of the most problematic areas of a home is the crawlspace. The crawlspace is one of those hidden gems, out of sight out of mind. If your home does not have a crawlspace then you are already ahead of the game. However, a lot of homes have crawlspaces. Check the crawlspace for standing water on the ground. If there is standing water check to see if the sump pump is working. If it is not

Cocktail Party Food and Cocktails, my favorite part...
Recipes
I love cocktail shrimp and hey, were in Alaska so splurge on some local delicacy’s that’s why we live here right? Always put out some of your favorite summer staples, smoked salmon, fresh fruit and cheese plate, some quality crackers never get old at a party! For some Mini comfort foods are always popular I love combining these two in a trendy classic that’s always popular and adaptable. You can also do pears with brie or sharp white aged cheddar cheese too! Mini Apple Grilled Cheese Sandwiches 12 Slices Rye bread, thin sliced 12oz Gruyere, sliced 1-2 Organic Apples depending on size, thinly sliced (I’d use Granny Smith, Fiji, Opal or other fresh eating tart apple) (Optional additions can include, bacon, arugula, caramelized red onions, your favorite home jam from summer or chutney)
Form six sandwiches, in batches melt butter in skillet on medium heat and cook until bread is nice and golden and cheese is melted. Cut sandwiches into quarters, serve immediately, or you can cook in batches if you’re the hostess. Grapefruit and Ginger Sparkler start the evening off light and bubbly to set the mood. 1oz ruby red grapefruit juice (fresh if you can) ½ oz ginger liqueur 3-4 oz Prosecco
Brandy Alexander Punch I love serving a punch, or pitcher of martinis… that way you don’t end up playing bartender, so a punch is easy and perfect for Christmas and for the other drinks making little stations with instructions is great, just make sure to check the ice bucket often!
Grapefruit wedge to garnish
In a large punch bowl combine the following ingredients
Negroni is a simple sipping classic drink made with equal parts sweet vermouth, dry gin and Campari and an orange slice. Any excuse to buy a bottle of Campari and I’m sold!
750ml or Fifth of Brandy
1oz Dry London Gin 1oz Campari 1 oz Sweet Vermouth Orange wedge to garnish
Combine over ice and stir add garnish. A fun holiday twist is to stick a few cloves in the orange wedge and have a bowl of sugared whole fresh cranberries or rosemary sprigs to add to drinks as guests see fit.
1 cup crème de cacao (I prefer dark over light but up to you)
Plan your glitz and glam affairs by inviting all your favorite people, (hopefully some include family members, or not) , make

This is instant-happy-mouth type of appetizer, great to have at your own party and great to take out if you’re invited somewhere else, as long as there is an oven to use for a few minuets! Smoked Almonds, 8oz can Chevre, fresh goat cheese 8oz package, Container of Pitted Dates, if you can’t find them you can unpit but plan a little extra time for unpitted.
Slice Date horizontal and remove pit from roughly 36 dates (or more if you would like) place a smoked almond in each date and stuff with goat cheese. Broil on high for 4 minutes or until cheese is golden on top. Cool for at least five minutes before serving.
Half gallon half & half
Rumaki
3 cups honey sweetened whip cream
A total 50’s classic for any cocktail party, my husband loves these since they remind him of his grandparents so I do make them every once in a while, holidays are nice since they don’t fit in so well with the Superbowl. They take a bit of timing.
½ gallon of Breyers Vanilla Ice cream (cut into 8 pieces to float on top and melt into drink) Fresh ground nutmeg and cinnamon on top of the ice cream
Enjoy and remind everyone to arrive home safely at the end of the night.
When you’re ready for everyone to head home this season you can always put on Duck the Halls courtesy of the Robertson Family, or the Glee Christmas Album vol 3… They’ll be sure to duck out quietly if you know what I mean. Leave the mess till morning, and lock the door, maybe you’ll get a housekeeping service in your stocking this year!
Let’s get the party started! The snow is upon us and the holiday festivals and parties are just kicking off what a great time to get some fresh ideas for some Contributed cocktail foods, holiday by Amber King appetizers and you can have your own madmen sorrie complete with mistletoe and gin cocktails.

Or if you’re more laid back put on A very, Very Yellow Christmas by Yellowman
with classics like “We Wish you a Reggae Christmas”, or “Jamaica, Jamaica, We Don’t Got No Snow” and “Santa Claus Never Comes to the Ghetto” or Check out The Jack 2 Pack for a totally different kind of party straight from Danny Elfman’s friends!
