Letter from the Publisher H

appy Holidays everyone! (DIY) decorations such as What a “winter” huh? wreaths made of burlap or I wrote my last column on stockings made by hand, “Winterizing your Pets” in read Randi Wilson’s article anticipation that we’d have “Bring Nature Home for lots of snow in November. the Holidays” on page 14 I can’t say that I am super for more DIY ideas! This disappointed that we don’t type of crafting activity have an abundance of snow reminds me of the things but I can say that I am very By Anna Hoke we’d do to prepare for the tired of the rain and damp holidays and the joyous weather. This time of year reminds countdown to Christmas. In school me of traditions old and new, and by we’d construct a chain out of red and traditions, I use the word lightly. I green construction paper. Each link mean it in the sense of an individual’s would represent a day on the journey or family’s rituals that happen to Christmas and each day we’d each year that are meaningful and remove a link. We also had a calendar memorable. I’ve written about mine at home with windows that could be more than once but as this is a time opened with a little piece of candy of year for reflection, I am going to inside which my brother and I would reminisce with you once more. For share. And of course there were always me, the holidays start with Christmas letters to Santa. One year, when my music (ahem, typically following brother and I were young, we started Halloween and before Thanksgiving), our letters to Santa early. On a frosty decorating and gift buying. It’s been morning we awoke to a porch full (I fun to experiment with do-it-yourself mean hundreds) of “reindeer prints”

Holiday Traditions all over the front deck. The carrots that we’d left for Santa’s team the night before had been eaten except for the tops, it was magical! My mom was always a very good helper to Santa. One time in the store, days before Christmas I found a little kitty stuffed animal that I wanted badly. My mom said no, but maybe Santa would bring it for Christmas. Later that day, as we got in the car after shopping, she said “Anna, you should look in the bags, I saw a flash of red and white run by and throw something in the bag!” Sure enough, Santa, who I hear is a speedy guy tossed the little kitty in the bag. Recently I was reminiscing about our Christmas tree traditions with family. We’d always get a real tree and then pull out all our decorations, new and old while listening to Christmas music, some songs of which we made our own silly lyrics to. The ornaments would be pulled out of the boxes, one of which was a realistic looking red cardinal bird that was missing a lot of feathers due to a lot of love. Can you spot it in the photo above? My brother and I were infatuated with this bird, as were the cats. We have kept the paper plate and macaroni noodle ornaments, and construction paper and garland Christmas tree and display them proudly year after year. On Christmas Eve we’d attend a family friend’s Christmas party and then attend a service. We’d rush home after that, eat something minimal for dinner and then were lucky enough to open presents on Christmas Eve, and then open presents from Santa on Christmas morning. I remember year after year as a kid having a reoccurring dream on Christmas Eve of opening my presents from Santa and I’d get cleaning supplies and socks. What do you think that means?

N

owadays, as life is busy, my husband and I (and other family members) usually spend Christmas Eve

running from store to store because we are “those” people who wait until the last minute. We usually have a wrapping party in the living room till late at night. Where some people might be stressed, I actually love the sense of urgency and excitement this new tradition brings for us. It’s kind of a fun challenge, “are we or aren’t we going to get everything done before Christmas?”

A

fter everything is wrapped and unwrapped and we waddle from stuffing ourselves, we end the month with New Years Eve. My traditions for New Years Eve have been pretty much the same. The championship games for the Juneau Holiday Cup are always on December 31. I watch the games and then either have a party to attend to or I stay home and watch a movie with the family. I always take time to reflect and remember the good times and say goodbye to the bad. For me, 2014 was a wonderful year full of adventure and expansion. I am excited to see what 2015 has to offer. I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas, Happy Holidays and I will see you in the New Year! Anna Hoke is the graphic designer and owner of Southeast Living Magazine. Rollergirls

O

n Saturday, October 25th the Juneau Rollergirls hosted skaters from the Yukon Rollergirls, and Boom Town Derby Dames at their Halloween themed season opener “A Nightmare on Eagan Street.” The first ever multi league mash-up game featured skaters from all three leagues on each of the teams. The Wolf Pack faced off against The Body Snatchers and delivered an action packed bout for the crowd. The Body Snatchers prevailed in the end, but not without several lead changes and too many hard hits to count.

Photos by Pat Barry

During the game the Juneau Rollergirls honored two of their own, Kaili Woyote and Tuffy Bragoon by retiring jersey numbers C4 and CAT5. This means no new Juneau Rollergirls can adopt these numbers. 360 North provides live broadcast coverage for the Juneau Rollergirls and then archives the footage on their YouTube channel. Check it out

if you missed the action. The Juneau Rollergirls donate 5% of proceeds from each of their games to a local non-profit organization of their choice. This time the funds went to support Haven House. In order to continue skating at Centennial Hall the Juneau Rollergirls are raising funds to

purchase a snap together, sport court to help preserve and protect the floor against wear and tear. Centennial Hall has already agreed to help with a sizable donation and by providing storage location for the new floor covering. You can help by becoming a sponsor or donating. Check out the options at juneaurollergirls.com Can’t get enough Roller Derby? Become a sponsor, skater, or referee for the Juneau Rollergirls. Short, stormy days make it difficult to show the house in the daylight. Wet walkways can make for muddy entryways. The list goes on. Whatever you do, don’t let the winter season discourage you. Remember that this is the time of year when buyers are serious! With a strategy in place, your home can show just as well in winter as in summer. Here are a few ideas that will help:

1.

Do try to schedule showings during the daylight hours. This can be tough since most people will be working during the day, but can be skirted by scheduling your showing for a weekend.

and that the entire place is adequately lit. You might even consider putting your lights on a timer. While you’re at it, pull back the curtains and blinds on every window in the house to let in as much light as possible. Not only will this keep it bright, it’ll prevent buyers from having to search around for the light switch.

4.

Keeping a clean house will be more challenging in the winter months, so keep on top of it! Place a rug in the entryway for muddy shoes. Wash the windows, vacuum the carpets, and polish

the fixtures. You get the point. A clean house is an inviting house.

5.

A word about pets—wet dogs smell like, well, wet dogs. No one wants to walk into a home that smells like a wet dog, not even the people who own them! If you do have pets, make sure you deal with any odors that might come along with them before your house is scheduled to be shown.

6.

Take advantage of the season to stage your house in a way that conveys a

2.

Don’t forget about curb appeal. If it’s rainy out, make sure that your yard is as well-kept as you can make it. If it’s snowing outside, keep the walkway to the front door clear of snow and ice at all times. You don’t want a buyer to turn away before he or she even gets to the front door.

3.

cozy impression. Consider a bouquet of winter flowers. If By Amanda Pilley you have a fireplace, make sure there’s a fire in it for showings (don’t leave it unattended for too long!). A wreath and a few well-placed twinkle lights in December couldn’t hurt. Turn the heat up. Give potential buyers a reason to linger. Make them think that your home is a sanctuary from the cold. One thing is for certain—the winter months are when a prospective buyer is going to get a true sense of what a house is like. Is the driveway an ice-slick? Has the roof developed a leak? Is there standing water up against the foundation? Take the steps to ensure that your home is maintained, accessible, clean, and inviting. Don’t let winter be an obstacle for your home sale.

Amanda has lived in Southeast Alaska for most of her adult life and recently moved back to Juneau for the third time. She is a graduate of Albertson College of Idaho with a degree in Creative Writing. To reach Amanda, please feel free to email her at amanda_pilley@hotmail.com.

I was reading a beautifully written article by Rachel Macy Stafford, Author of Hands Free Mama in which she shared a story about an encounter she had at her daughter’s swim class with an exceptionally upset employee. “ ...I began walking in the direction the man desperately wanted me to go, but then I stopped. I turned back around, looked him straight in the eye and said, ‘Why do you have to be so rude?’

People have physical hurts, emotional pains, financial burdens, and more that are pure burden. Burden we can not always know. Burdens’ whose impact we can not understand. Treat encounters with the unkind with pause and grace and both they and we may feel a bit of that oppression lifted. You may remember last year I encouraged you to reach out in your community as winter and the holiday’s can be especially difficult for many people. The opportunity is here again.

needed to pump, as my baby is still breastfed. I was sitting in a little coffee shop, Refiner’s Roast, wondering just how I was going to manage this with some measure of discretion when I noticed a business card on the bulletin board - for a lactation consultant. A brief phone call and she was quickly inviting me to use her office, despite a very busy schedule of her own. Thank you Janai Meyer! There were others who were just exceptionally nice - the practice manager at Creekside, the personal banker at Wells Fargo, a gentleman at the front desk at Cape Fox, the waitress at Bar Harbor Restaurant, countless vendors at the TSS sponsored health fair, and others. A supreme act of kindness during this trip that stands out as truly unbelievable was at the end of my trip…. Kathy, owner and massage therapist extraordinaire at Spa Ketchikan welcomed me into her space and not only gave me great service, but then let me

with me at all; it may be that they fell off a ladder and they just hurt. So, as Ms. Stafford concluded, so do I - use her Ladder Perspective : “When faced with other people’s unpleasant behavior, let us remember to consider the condition of the heart. And instead of kicking them when they are down, we might just be able to help them up … one rung at a time.”

“Throughout this trip I was reminded that nice people are still out there and I too need to be nice.” stay after closing to pump and relax until I had to catch my flight back to Juneau. Their genuine goodwill more than made up for encounters with others that were not so

pleasant. Throughout this trip I was reminded that nice people are still out there and I too need to be nice.

Holiday Dips

e’ve gone Dippy this December! I grew up in Petersburg, Alaska where the 24th of December marks a very festive time in town. All the businesses close down for business and open up to the whole community with a traditional Julebukking, as a way to thank the community for patronage over the year. Some elements of today’s Santa Claus come from these traditions in the

1 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 4 cups chopped onions 3/4 tsp salt 1 3/4 cup beef broth or 1 3/4 cup mushroom broth 2 tsp onion powder 2 Tbsp distilled white vinegar (probably the only recipe you’ll see this in 1 cup reduced-fat sour cream 1/3 cup nonfat plain yogurt or mayonnaise

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onions and salt; cook, stirring occasionally, until beginning to brown, 6 to 10 minutes. Add broth, scrape up any browned bits, and simmer until the liquid is almost evaporated, 10 to 20 minutes. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook until the onions are deep golden brown, 5 to 8 minutes more. Stir in onion powder, then stir in vinegar and cook until evaporated, 1 to 2 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool for 20 minutes. Combine

butter in the skillet. Add the shallots and cook over moderate heat until softened. Add the livers, season with salt and pepper and cook until barely pink inside, about 8 minutes. Add the cognac and simmer for 1 minute. Scrape into a food processor; let cool. Add 1 1/2 sticks of the butter to the livers and puree until smooth. Transfer to a bowl. Fold in 3 teaspoons of the mustard seeds, 3 tablespoons of the parsley and 8 of the sliced caper berries (or capers if you can’t find the larger berries) and season with 1/2 teaspoon each of salt and pepper. Spread the mousse in a 6-cup soufflé dish and top with the remaining parsley, mustard seeds and caper berries. In a small bowl, gently melt the remaining 4 tablespoons of butter in the microwave. Skim the foam from the surface. Spoon the clear butter evenly over the mousse, leaving behind the milk solids; tilt to distribute the butter. Cover and refrigerate overnight.

cold dark north such as going door to door with gifts, caroling and receiving food or money for a happy holiday and the essence of being naughty or nice. Today the Julebukk is a straw goat that can be placed under a Christmas tree as a surprise. Once found the recipient must do the same for the next family and so it travels from house to house. Tis the season, gathering with family and friends and you need something quick to bring to the party, so I offer you a collection of my favorite dips, some retro, some foreign and packed full of punch and a few that are just a simple addition that anyone can quickly assemble either on site or before the shindig, if you’re lucky you have leftovers or a clean bowl. Cream the cheese in an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment until just smooth. Add the sour cream, lemon juice, dill, onions, horseradish, salt and pepper, and mix. Add the smoked salmon and mix well. Chill the spread and serve with crudités (raw veggies) or water crackers. I prefer sockeye smoked salmon; it’s drier and sweeter than other smoked salmon. For a fancy service dollop on slices of cucumber with dill sprig on top, makes a great passed hors d’oeuvre.

1 cup frozen whipped topping, thawed brown sugar to garnish Assorted fruit for dipping Beat brown sugar and cream cheese at medium speed with an electric mixer until smooth. Add sour cream, vanilla, zest and, if desired, coffee liqueur, beating until blended and smooth; fold in whipped topping. Cover and chill 4 hours. Garnish, if desired. Serve with assorted fruit.
