Holiday Survival Guide
H
appy Holidays! This time of year often brings feelings of glee, twinkling lights, bright cheery smiles and ugly red sweaters, but it can also be a busy and sometimes overwhelming time. The days are darker, gloomier, budgets can be tight, driving is more stressful, the list goes on. So with that I have some personal holiday survival practices I’d like to share and also a few season must-haves. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Be thankful for what you have, big or small. I am so thankful for my family, a warm place to call home and a full belly (of food that is, don’t need to be starting any rumors). It’s easy to get wrapped up in the idea that our holiday parties and dinners must be grand, perfect, every hair and chair in place. That’s a lot of puzzle pieces to put together and keep that way when life can be unpredictable and messy. So cherish the mess, unless it’s Legos, those things kill to step on. Mess means we have things to do, people to see and life to live. When all else fails, casseroles. Who doesn’t like casseroles?! There are a number of good recipes Online, I choose to look at Pintrest. My favorite casserole is chicken and dumpling. It’s easy and I can eat it for days and I consider it relatively healthy. And if you’re already going to make one meal, why not make another and pop it in the freezer for later! Make your own traditions to look forward to. Growing up, and to this day, Christmas to me means soccer and the annual Holiday Cup Soccer Tournament. For more than 15 years I’ve played in the tournament, usually with a soccer game either everyday or every other day of the week leading up to Christmas and then the week after. It’s wonderful to be active, to see friendly albeit competitive faces on the turf that I’ve seen year after year. And this ties in with my By Anna Hoke next season

somehow. Then there’s Christmas music. I am one of those people who secretly listens to Christmas music before Thanksgiving. I love a good holiday jingle, classic, new, or silly! And lastly, pajamas. There is something about a winter morning, cup of coffee, and wearing fun fuzzy pajamas, it makes it all the more magical. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and your loved ones, it’s been an eventful 2016 and I am looking forward to what 2017 has to offer. See you in the New Year! essential, exercise. Exercise is really important, especially this time of year. I’ll be the first to admit, I get SAD, or seasonal affective disorder if I’m not diligent about keeping the winter blues away. Even if it’s just a walk outside in the slush or freezing weather for 15 minutes, the fresh air clears the mind and is good for the soul and is a good reminder that there is a hustle and bustle of life out there which is hard to remember sometimes when we are stuffed indoors more frequently. Exercise is a crucial element to keep a good physical and mental balance. Eating right. Personally, I feel food can either do a lot of good or a lot of bad to your body and what you eat is the foundation or building blocks to health. With anything moderation is key. Treat yourself to a cupcake or goody but do eat a healthy serving of veggies more often than not, and if you’re too busy for that, throw a handful of spinach in a smoothie! I also try to cut out processed foods because personally eating ingredients I cannot pronounce doesn’t sit well with me. Eating well helps me both physically and mentally, which in turn helps keep my attitude cheery and my energy level up. And lastly, my Holiday must-haves: pine tree smell, Christmas music and pajamas! I must have pine scented .COM

possible. This year will be the first Christmas our oldest daughter has not been at my parent’s home in Alaska to celebrate. We are blessed to have good friends and each other to be with, but come the day of, I’m sure it will feel like a key piece of what makes Christmas, well Christmas, is just missing. So with all the changes, here is where we are at this year. I am raising my girls to be rooted in a Christ centered faith, that teaches them that what we do should honor Him and show His grace and love to each other and those around us. So, much of our Christmas season includes the standard Judeo-Christian traditions mixed with other elements we’ve picked up along the way. We will likely have some form of tree, special meal, twinkling lights, and holiday cards. We will play Christmas music and celebrate the story of Jesus’ birth. My oldest daughter is dancing in the local Nativity Ballet hosted at the Mt. Baker Theater, and we will attend church services. Then there is gifts. Gift giving is a central theme to Christmas. With a holiday dominated by presents, often with packaging more beautiful even than what is inside, it is difficult not to become consumed by wanting and shopping. It is fun and exciting to be both giving and receiving
– but how much is enough? At what point is it gross excess that truly defeats the joy of Christmas and breeds just ugly greed and exhaustion? I want gifting to be an ongoing and special part of our holiday tradition, but like many people, I often feel overwhelmed by the intense consumerism. We have been making a conscious effort to slowly but surely simplify our lives – to live smaller and choose quality over quantity. A commitment that has to be re-established constantly. I also want to gift some season joy to those around us who for whatever reasons do not find Christmas to be a time of year worth celebrating – it’s hard and it hurts. I
have a person and also a place that I want to serve here in Bellingham this holiday, and am excited to have my girls partner with me in that. My wish list this year is to model contentment to my children and grace in giving to others. I want them to find true joy in both.
How will you celebrate Christmas in your home? Are you embracing or moving away from the festivities of the holiday? What brings you joy this time of year? How are you bringing joy to someone else? A section I read from the book Parent’s Tao Te Ching reminded me that everything I do at this stage of my life is about parenting. Parenting is about modeling…. Being the change we want in our communities and our world starts with us- with modeling…. To be a wise parent you must become like water. It is content to nourish all it touches
without discrimination. While people struggle to move up, water flows joyfully down, feeling the low places. As you care for your children keep their environment uncluttered, free of useless gadgets and distractions. Keep your conversation honest and straightforward, free of control and manipulation. Keep your decisions fair and generous, free of punishment and shame. As you conduct your life, be serene and joyful, content and at peace. This will be your greatest legacy.
Nothing nurtures a child like a parent who takes great pleasure from a simple activity, and is content with the present moment. Are you modeling contentment or always wanting ‘more?’ Wishing every Alaskan home a truly Merry Christmas !

Home Maintenance The weather has turned and after a long sunny summer spent outdoors, I find myself indoors after a day’s work. It’s dark early and it’s dark late into the morning, and with shorter days come cooler temperatures and the fluffy white stuff that brings us back to the outside. It seems fall has all but slipped away and some home maintenance may have been neglected. It’s still not too late. Yearly and bi-yearly maintenance on the exterior of the home will help with the durability of your home and help keep the inhabitants healthy. Unlike building a home from the ground up I like to do home maintenance from the roof down. Caution! It is December so if the roof is not too steep there are a few places to check and some of these can be visible from the ground. The roof takes on the biggest brunt of weather, although if your home is on Douglas that is questionable with the winds that come up the channel. If the weather permits and the roof is not frosty clean the roof valleys and behind vent pipes. Check and clean any debris that can be easily pushed off with a broom. While on the roof check all the flashing and any penetrations through
the roof like around chimneys and vents to ensure that there will not be any leaks. More caulking on leaks will often not sustain through a Southeast Alaska winter, it’s important a roof be flashed properly. A steel roof can be addressed in the same way an asphalt roof is maintained although take extra precaution that it will be very slick to walk on. After the roof is cleaned where does all the debris go? Well it’s probably in the gutters. Gutters are the next item on my list of home maintenance items for the exterior of the home. I will clean the gutters and make sure all the roof water is going into the gutters. I make sure the gutters are draining and sloped properly to the down spouts. It’s important to complete gutter maintenance in the fall as well as spring to assure snow and ice throughout the winter did not knock anything out of whack. Most of the attic can be checked from the access but sometimes it is wise to check all under decking of the roof for signs of moisture if the roof is questionable. Though, not all water damaged areas of an attic are caused by roof failures or problems. Moisture can also
find its way through the home and into the attic in vapor form and condense on the underside of a cool roof deck in colder temperatures. This condensation can happen on a daily basis if the home humidity level is high enough and the roof deck is at dew point temperature. The moisture should be very visible and roofing nails will be frosted or the underside of the roof decking may appear wet or actually raining. Another thing to check in the attic is any vent ducting running through the attic. Make sure all ducting is sealed correctly and vented to the exterior. It will also be easy to see the insulation in the attic and if the insulation is in place or time to add more. Working your way to safer ground and down the home. It is good to check all windows and doors making sure there is no leaks or broken glass. Make sure all seals on the windows and doors are good. Check that all windows and doors are sealing tightly, keeping the heat in and the water out. Proper flashing and caulking plays a big role in how window perform on the exterior of the home. The exterior of the windows and doors should be checked at least once a

REMOTE PARADISE IN GROUND HOG BAY
“Even by Alaska standards, this place has to be seen to be believed.” This beautiful acreage in Southeast Alaska has 3 separate cabins and is accessible by boat and float plane. It is located in Ground Hog Bay in Icy Straits, just a few miles from Swanson Harbor. There are existing moorings in the bay for your boats. The property is bordered on 3 sides by Tongass National Forest and faces approximately 800 feet of waterfront on the fourth side. With no private property adjoining, this site can be subdivided. The cabins face south for the best sun exposure, and each cabin is fully self-contained for spring-summer-fall living or a summer retreat. This location would also be ideal for an Ecotourism business or for a guiding business. Each of the 3 cabins has a woodstove, propane heater, solar panel, generator, running water, septic system, on-demand hot water and full bath with a shower. There is a year-round creek running through the property. The maintenance building has all the tools and equipment you can think of, including ATVs, excavator, 17’ Whaler and an 18’ Lund boat and much more. PREPPING YOUR HOUSE FOR A WINTER SALE No question about it, getting a home to show well in the winter months in Southeast Alaska can be challenging. Short, stormy days make it difficult to show the house in the daylight. Wet walkways can make for muddy entryways. The list goes on. Whatever you do, don’t let the winter season discourage you. Remember that this is the time of year when buyers are serious! With a strategy in place, your home can show just as well in winter as in summer. Here are a few ideas that will help:
1.
Do try to schedule showings during the daylight hours. This can be tough since most people will be working during the day, but can be skirted by scheduling your showing for a weekend.
and that the entire place is adequately lit. You might even consider putting your lights on a timer. While you’re at it, pull back the curtains and blinds on every window in the house to let in as much light as possible. Not only will this keep it bright, it’ll prevent buyers from having to search around for the light switch.
4.
Keeping a clean house will be more challenging in the winter months, so keep on top of it! Place a rug in the entryway for muddy shoes. Wash the windows, vacuum the carpets, and polish
the fixtures. You get the point. A clean house is an inviting house.
5.
A word about pets—wet dogs smell like, well, wet dogs. No one wants to walk into a home that smells like a wet dog, not even the people who own them! If you do have pets, make sure you deal with any odors that might come along with them before your house is scheduled to be shown.
6.
Take advantage of the season to stage your house in a way that conveys a
2.
Don’t forget about curb appeal. If it’s rainy out, make sure that your yard is as well-kept as you can make it. If it’s snowing outside, keep the walkway to the front door clear of snow and ice at all times. You don’t want a buyer to turn away before he or she even gets to the front door.
3.
cozy impression. Consider a bouquet of winter flowers. If By Amanda Pilley you have a fireplace, make sure there’s a fire in it for showings (don’t leave it unattended for too long!). A wreath and a few well-placed twinkle lights in December couldn’t hurt. Turn the heat up. Give potential buyers a reason to linger. Make them think that your home is a sanctuary from the cold. One thing is for certain—the winter months are when a prospective buyer is going to get a true sense of what a house is like. Is the driveway an ice-slick? Has the roof developed a leak? Is there standing water up against the foundation? Take the steps to ensure that your home is maintained, accessible, clean, and inviting. Don’t let winter be an obstacle for your home sale.

Whether you’re shopping for a new traditional, manufactured or modular home or just attempting a renovation project, it’s important to consider the functionality of key spaces like kitchens and living rooms. These most-frequented rooms will host meals, family gatherings, movie nights, homework sessions and holiday celebrations, so they need to include features that facilitate all these uses and more. If the layout of your current apartment or house isn’t working for you as well as you would like, it can seem even more unlivable during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. As you consider which home elements will be the best investment for your money, the home experts at Clayton suggest keeping these features in mind: Kitchen island - With the exception of galley kitchens, virtually every kitchen can benefit from an island. Kitchen islands are the perfect spot for serving Christmas morning breakfast, setting out dishes for a Thanksgiving buffet,
food prep for a New Year’s celebration or a staging area for an all-night wrapping party after the kids are in bed. Utilize generous under-island cabinet space to store large items like a crock pot or large serving bowls. The island also makes a great space to add additional seating if you are expecting guests. Farmhouse sink - Also called apron sinks, farmhouse-style sinks are perfect sinks
for holiday entertainers and very trendy in new homes. Larger and deeper than standard under-mount or top-mount sinks, a farmhouse sink gives you plenty of room for washing large kitchen items. The baking sheets you used to whip up a batch of holiday cookies, the big pot where you simmered chili and even the racks from your oven will fit easily into a farmhouse sink. What’s more, farmhouse sinks give any kitchen a comforting, homey, yet elegant look. Sweeping technology - With all the cooking and entertaining you’ll be doing in the kitchen, crumbs and spills are inevitable. The last thing you want to do with a houseful of guests is wrestle with a full-sized vacuum cleaner or risk having a hand vac prove inadequate for your needs. Sweeping technology like a central dirt-removal vacuum system can make cleanup much quicker and easier. The central dirt-removal vacuum

Fireplace - Few home features are more appropriate for the holidays than a fireplace that will add warmth and ambiance to any celebration, no matter how large or small. Gas log fireplaces set a festive atmosphere with the flick of a switch. It’s possible to install one in virtually any style home, from site-built to manufactured, and some versions can even work on interior walls of a home. Many homes will even feature a hand-laid stone or tile fireplace for a stylish, sophisticated look. Pet-friendly features - Four-legged friends are part of the family - and every holiday celebration. Homebuilders now offer a variety of features to make life more pleasant for pets and easier for homeowners. Create a pet dish drawer that allows you to hide feeding dishes when they’re not needed. A windowseat or hideaway cubby can be the perfect escape spot for pets who feel overwhelmed by holiday activities and guests. And a built-in grooming station in a mudroom or utility room makes it easy to primp your pet before holiday guests arrive.
Sarah Petersen of Crafty Girls AK, and Kaitlin Lafavour of Little River Creations share a booth at the Second Saturday Market at the Airport Shopping Center. They will also be at the Nugget Mall Craft Fair on December 3rd and 4th.

Kahlua Recipe Ingredients: 1 12-cup pot very strong coffee 2 lbs. light brown sugar 5 tablespoons vanilla As some of you may know I was a bartender, and bar manager for many a wild and zany shifts across Southeast Alaska. Holiday parties are by far the most fun of the Alaskan winter, whether it’s tailgating up at Eaglecrest or bar hopping after the company parties, it’s a joyous tradition. I remember my grandmother telling stories of extravagant parties back in the 40’s and 50’s in the interior. I also have memories of my parents making Kahlua during the fall, for winter parties when we lived as logging camp hosts. Alaskans know how to throw a great winter party. So bust out that crushed velvet,
sequin accessories and your dancing shoes, come celebrate the darkness, the cold, our co-workers, our community which becomes our family. I’ve got a few of my favorite winter drinks for you and a few homemade liquors. Especially with the additions of really terrible food additives, old fashioned and homemade liquors without fake cinnamon flavors and propylene glycol are a must for my cheer. Skoal to you and yours’ and please make sure you and co get home safely! From my cocktail to yours, enjoy! I’m leaving these open to interpretation for
recipe sake, play around, mix for two or for a crowd!
1 bottle 190 proof grain alcohol (ever clear or other neutral spirit)
Raspberry Delight: Chambord, hot chocolate, vodka, white cream de cacao, whip cream top (serve hot)
Preparation:
Bossa Nova: Apricot Brandy, Dark Rum, Galliano, Lemon Juice and Pineapple Juice (serve over ice) Toblerone: Frangelico, Irish cream, Cacao Cream, Kahlua, chocolate syrup, either mix with a dash of warm coffee for a hot toddy or make a blended martini by adding vanilla or coffee ice cream. (blended or hot)
W W W.
Make very strong brew of coffee, transfer coffee to a boil in a pot on the stove. Gradually stir in the brown sugar, remove from stove and cool to room temperature When cool, add the seed scrapings or vanilla extract and alcohol Bottle and seal in airtight container, or dark glass jar, shake before using, will improve with age if out of sunlight.
