Happy Holidays on in a stranger’s life or even the life of your peers sometimes. This is the season to be sincere and respectful, and for good measure throw in a dash of compassion and empathy.

Happy Holidays! As I sit here and write this column I am filled with excitement and joy for the holidays. Ironically, I am planted in front of my SAD light as Christmas music fills the air and my Christmas cactus is in full bloom. The holidays mean something different to everyone and I can certainly appreciate that, diversity always keeps it interesting. For me, the holidays start with Christmas music, decorating and gift buying. It’s been fun to experiment with Do-it-yourself (DIY) decorations such as wreaths made of burlap or stockings made by hand. This type of crafting activity reminds me of the things we’d do to prepare for the holidays and the joyous countdown to Christmas. In school we’d construct a chain out of red and green construction paper. Each link would represent a day on the journey to Christmas and each day we’d remove a link. We also would have a little calendar at home with windows that could be opened with a little piece of candy inside which my brother and I would share. And of course there was

The holidays can also be somewhat stressful, and sometimes I find that this time of year with the extended darkness can bring out some less than stellar behavior in people. I certainly have to remind m y s e l f sometimes to practice patience a n d maintain a level head. After all, tis the season to show the best characteristics of yourself no matter how slow someone is driving in the left lane, or how long you are on hold with tech support trying to set up your new toy you got for Christmas. Please remind yourself that you don’t know what is going

I for one am affected by the darker days of winter and the lack of vitamin D. I take supplements, and as I said before, sit in front of my SAD light. Still, most days that isn’t enough. I may find myself depressed, low energy, anxious, all the good stuff. Sometimes getting outdoors helps, or having coffee with a friend. As a chronic sufferer of anxiety I will tell you I have plotted when my anxiety is usually the worst and what can help it, and also what triggers it.

It took me a very long time to discover that I was in fact suffering from anxiety and that the overwhelming feeling of fear and guilt following me around like a dark cloud wasn’t actually normal, and there are people who don’t experience this. So take a deep breath with me, and remember the good times, saying goodbye to the bad and moving forward to a new year. For me, 2018 was a mixed bag. Even though there were downs, I am happy to announce that the highlight of my year is finding out that I am expecting a baby boy! I am excited to expand my family, and to see what 2019 has to offer. MY CUP You will be reading this in December, but as I’m writing, Thanksgiving is just around the corner and I find myself so immensely grateful for where I am in my life – family and career - that I can literally feel the last half of the old Bible verse, Psalm 23:5 in every fiber of my being; ”…. my cup runneth over.” My life is overflowing not only because I am busy but with blessing. Blessing in spite of or even because of adversity. Adversity invites us to grow. We however have to accept the challenge and then do the work. About this time last year I made an intentional shift to do exactly that. I accepted a position that Dr. Lizbeth Roy, DO of StudioPRP had been offering me for a long time; I had been afraid to take it. I embraced more fully the medical school oath of Docere (Doctor as Teacher). Only this time not in a doctor to patient role, but as a doctor to doctor role. If you follow any of my work outside of the articles I write for Southeast Living Magazine, then you know that I have limited my practice to Regenerative Medicine. While I’m still in clinic seeing patients three days a week, I spend a great deal of time as a guest lecturer for medical education groups and teaching hands-on courses to providers wanting to learn to use PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) in orthopedic, aesthetic and sexual health & wellness applications. Guess what? I’m actually really (really) good at this. Trust me, it has taken me a long time to be able to say that out loud, let alone write it. The thing is, I never believed it when other experts would say it about me; I had to start saying it myself to literally create new neuro-pathways in my brain for how I self-identified. As I began to see myself as excellent in my trade and my skill set, I actually got even better! More exciting than simply moving into a new job position or title, I re-awakened what I believe is probably my greatest skill – connecting. When I took the Gallup Clifton Strength Finder test last spring, what they call “Woo” was in my top 5 strengths. The basic characteristics of “Woo” are social intelligence, instinct, influence and

integration. I genuinely like to connect with people and I decided that instead of simply connecting with anyone and everyone, I was going to deliberately seek out people striving for excellence in specific areas and willing to push me to up-level in my family and professional life. I started practicing the fine art of saying “no” to people and opportunities that did not share my code of ethics or commitment to growth. I also found myself saying “yes” to some of the people who have been in my life for a long time, and I needed to more fully acknowledge how they were really winning at life and could challenge me to do the same. Some of these friends and colleagues literally make it possible for me to be who I need and want to be. My tribe is everything. It’s growing and I’m constantly in awe at the value I get to bring and caliber of people I get to be with. I actually feel, not that I’m a

completely different person, but that I am more fully aware of my deepest identity, the “me” that has always been there and I’m finally allowing myself the freedom to live into my potential.

So I’m going to share just some of the basics with you so that you can be a discerning consumer if searching for these services. Holiday Cocktails and Duck Dinner Christmas Mojito

Minty Caprina

Juice of 1 lime 8 leaves mint 1 tablespoon sugar 2 tablespoons white rum 1 tablespoon coconut rum 1/4 cup canned coconut milk sparkling water for topping pomegranate perils for serving

1-2 teaspoons honey or organic sugar (optional) 1 lime, quartered 6 fresh mint leaves crushed ice juice of 1/2 a grapefruit 2 ounces Cachaça or white rum sparkling water, for topping.

In a large pitcher, muddle the lime juice, sugar and mint leaves until the leaves have broken down.

In a glass, muddle 1-2 teaspoons sugar or honey (if using), the quartered lime and mint leaves. Add the ice, the grapefruit juice and the Cachaça, gently mix to combine. Pour sparkling water over top.

In a blender, combine the white rum, coconut rum, and coconut milk and pulse until smooth. Pour over the mint/ lime sugar mixture and stir to combine. Chill until ready to serve.

Red Rose Kombucha Cocktail 4 fresh or frozen raspberries juice of 1/2 a lemon 2 ounces silver tequila 1-2 teaspoons rose water (optional) 1 plain or ginger kombucha

Muddle the raspberries, lemon juice, tequila, and rose water in a glass. Add ice, gently mix to combine. Pour the kombucha over top, again gently stirring to combine. Continued on PAGE 16

down, and roast for 10 minutes. Prick the duck skin again, cover the pan with foil and reduce the oven temperature to 275°. Roast the duck for about 3 hours longer, until the meat is very tender and most of the fat has rendered. (never throw away)

Meanwhile, in a large skillet, cook the backbone, neck and wing tips over low heat until well browned all over. Add the remaining chopped onions and cook over moderate heat until browned, about 4 minutes. Pour off the fat from the skillet and add the tomato paste. Cook, stirring until it begins to brown, about 3 minutes. Add the white wine and bring to a boil. Add the water, chicken stock, and sugar and simmer until reduced to 1 cup, about 1 hour. Strain the stock and skim the fat from the surface. Save this fat strained in a jar, it can be kept for weeks sealed and used to flavor dishes and sauces, or to cook your breakfast eggs in. It’s liquid gold! When the duck is tender, transfer the halves to a work surface. Halve each half; remove any vegetables, pockets of fat and loose bones. (Serves 4: 2 light meat breasts and 2 dark portions of thigh and leg)

Freshly ground pepper Herbes de Provence (savory, thyme, basil, marjoram, lavender, parsley, oregano, tarragon, and bay powder with the rosemary and fennel) 1 tablespoon tomato paste 1/2 cup dry white wine 3 cups water

Preheat the oven to 475°. In a small roasting pan, (you want the meat proportionate to the pan) spread half of the chopped onions, 1/4 cup of the parsley, 1 tablespoon of the thyme and the garlic, bay leaves and celery. Prick the duck skin all over with a fork and rub the duck with 2 teaspoons of salt, 1 teaspoon of black pepper and 1 teaspoon of herbs de Provence. Set the duck halves on the vegetables, cut sides

Strain the juices from the roasting pan into a saucepan and skim off the fat; boil the strained juices until reduced to 1/4 cup. Add the strained stock and the olives to the saucepan and simmer for 10 minutes. Season the sauce with salt, pepper and herbs de Provence. Broil 10 inches from the heat for about 5 minutes, or until the duck is hot and the skin is crisp. Spoon the sauce onto a platter and set the duck on top. Sprinkle with the remaining 2 teaspoons of chopped parsley and 1 teaspoon of thyme and serve. The recipe can be prepared through Step 4 up to 2 days ahead. Cover and refrigerate the duck and sauce separately. Allow the duck to come to room temperature before broiling it. Also delicious with Goose and Turkey or game hens, but really just get the duck, it’s incredible. Enjoy with a Cotes de Provence wine or Oregon Pinot Noir, because you’ve already had cocktail hour ;) Season’s Greetings from my table to yours!
