BEFORE & AFTER This bathroom was an original 1967 “time capsule,” complete with dusty pink plumbing fixtures and all! The new design incorporates sleek products and materials in stylish finishes that update the overall appearance and functionality of this small space. While it was our goal to greatly modernize this space, we still wanted to achieve a sense of warmth and added longevity to the design as well. With that in mind, natural stone seemed to fit the bill for those same reasons and for its timeless appearance. A horizontally grained limestone was chosen for the wall tile that is applied to all four walls. Not only does this stone bring in a warm neutral tone, but its subtle veining and large scale 12” x 24” sizing help serve as the starting point for this contemporary design. From there, white fixtures and cabinetry, along
with darker colored counters and flooring, were chosen to provide contrast with the wall tile and to help add drama to this neutral palette. A single strip of mosaic tile was then inlaid within the floor to help pull it all together. This mosaic blend includes the same limestone used for the walls and also various marbles that tie in with the quartz counter and white fixtures. Of course, it never hurts to add a little sparkle to a space and we did just that with the use of chrome hardware and solid crystal sconces and cabinet knobs! Their polished finishes provide contrast against the honed finish of the tile and also add a level of elegance to the space as well. It is our belief that a space must function as well as it looks and since this remodel could not expand outside of its original footprint, we applied various techniques to increase its functionality and perception of size. Through extending the wall tile from floor to ceiling and from wall to wall, the eye does not visualize a break within the space and creates the perception that the space is much larger than it actually is. A taller tub from Kohler allows for a much deeper soak and a slim-lined toilet creates more space between the tub

Kitchen IS THE Heart OF A HOME
A
W
hether buying a new home, building a home, or remodeling the home you’re in, kitchens are the heart and soul of your dwellBy Greg Stopher ing. Think about Stopher Construction it, where do you spend the most time in your home? In the morning, I make my coffee, eat breakfast, prepare lunches, and maybe if I’m thinking ahead, getting things thawed for dinner. When I get home in the evening, it’s straight to the kitchen to get dinner on, unless I get home just in time to sit down and enjoy a nice home cooked meal with the family. After dinner it is time to clean up. Think about what else goes on in a kitchen, it’s where we prepare meals, eat, store our garbage and recycling, and store food and beverages. Homework is often done in the kitchen and paying those dreaded household bills happens there as well. Family get-togethers and holiday
celebrations also happen in the kitchen. With all this activity centered on this one room, why not give a little more attention to the heart of your home? WISH LIST A kitchen must function for your family. Make a wish list of what your family needs and wants in a kitchen. In my family with small elementary children it is nice to have them close when they are doing homework. A desk space in or near the kitchen where the kids can do their homework or work on their art projects is important to our family. Another thing to consider is the number of people who will use the kitchen. A single bachelor will have different needs in a kitchen than a family of four. A lot of times as a family we share kitchen duties so having enough space for two or three people to move about is important. Do you need an eatin space, space for entertaining, and how much storage do you need? Are there any additional appliances that you want to incorporate into your kitchen? LAYOUT
The first key to a good kitchen is layout. What designers call the work triangle is the triangle between the sink, stovetop or oven, and refrigerator. This area should not be too large or too small. If this kitchen work triangle is too large, it will be tiring and inefficient while cooking or prepping food. But make the kitchen triangle too close or even one leg of the triangle and it becomes ineffective as well. For instance, if the refrigerator is right next to the stove there would be nowhere to set anything down and others would be crowding if someone were using the stove. Think about general traffic in, around, and through the area. A strong design should keep traffic flow out of your workspace. STORAGE Storage is a one of the biggest issues in a kitchen. Everything that is done in a kitchen is stored in the kitchen. Pots, pans, food, cookbooks and even those dreaded bills. Storage can make a kitchen much more efficient. Try finding a pan among of 10 other pots and pans crammed into one cupboard. It reminds me of my college days, when it was easier to wash the dirty
pan in the sink instead of digging through the cupboard. Kitchen cabinets have come a long way in recent years with a variety of cabinets, shelves that can pull out for easy access, and spice racks to organize spices. A pantry is a nice added storage area for big items and kitchen appliances that are not used often and in Southeast Alaska freezer space is a must. You should consider if you need space for a small chest freezer in your pantry or just off the kitchen. Small kitchen appliances should not be an afterthought. There are several options for incorporating these items into the kitchen design. I like a designated bill center area and small homework desk to further organize the kitchen space. When selecting cabinets for your kitchen think about incorporating a hidden built-in recycling station and trash area. LIGHTING In Southeast Alaska lighting is a major part of a kitchen, especially this time of year when you’re eating breakfast in the dark and cooking dinner in the dark. It is good to have as much natural light as possible but you and I know during the

winter months, it is hard to come by. It is important to have good general lighting as well as workspace and task lighting. The spacing of lighting and layout is essential so that you are not working in the area of your shadow. Accent lighting can add to the enjoyment of a kitchen, make a focal point really stand out, and set a kitchen apart from other kitchens. I like dimmable lighting throughout most of the kitchen, which helps when the kitchen is being used for entertaining. DESIGN There are many books, magazines and websites that cover design and can help you and your family settle on something that will work for you. Today many lumber stores offer design consultations and interior designers can be helpful at this point as well. I have seen many trends come and go over the years and to me I think that the way your kitchen is finished depends on what you would like to get out of your home. Are you remodeling to add value to your home to sell? If you’re looking to sell you should probably stay with a more neutral palette. Pick something that will attract the most people, not just your taste. On the other side of the coin if you’re remodeling or building a home that your plan on being in for a long time then go with whatever fits your taste. You’re the one who is going to live with this kitchen,

No Umbrellas 2 Fashion Show Photos by Anna Hoke
The Alaskan Brewing Co. Depot sponsored another fashion show to raise money for the Red Cross. Last year the event raised money for Hospice and Home Care. Like last year, local fashions graced the runway. The show had participants from both downtown and the valley. The event offered the opportunity for businesses to walk their fashions down a runway, donate a silent auction item, and sell their wares in a boutique style silent auction setting. The event took place on November 17 at Centennial Hall. For more information email the Alaskan Brewing Company at info@alaskanbeer.com.

ROTARACT COORDINATING CHRISTMAS DINNER PROJECT
C
apital City Rotaract, a Rotary sponsored service club for men and women ages 18 to 30, is coordinating the Christmas Dinner Project for the fifth consecutive year. Last year they put together 200 boxes made of their favorite holiday foods for their friends and neighbors in need. They are working with Super Bear and Northland Services to gather supplies, pack and also deliver the boxes – but the process starts with donations from community members. Food boxes will be put together by Rotaractors and then Northland Services will be delivering them to Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul’s, The Glory Hole, and Catholic Community Services. Those agencies will then distribute the boxes to bring holiday cheer to several Juneau families this December. There are many ways to help: Donate: One food basket contains approx-

Designwise, the boutique is a blend of Victorian parlor, Hollywood Regency glamour and a few modern touches. It will be used as a gallery space during the First Friday art walks. A grand opening party will be held on the evening of December 7 featuring the artwork of Alana BallamSchwan. All are welcome to attend. Expecting in Juneau By Hannah Lindoff
I
t’s hard to be pregnant. I would know; I am currently in my ninth month and it’s all I can do to get out of bed in the morning. Some women really enjoy this time in their lives, but even if you constantly look on the bright side, it’s still hard. It can also be hard to be pregnant in Juneau specifically. We’re a small town; people are friendly. When they notice a pregnant woman, they comment. Not every comment is bad, but as a pregnant woman in her third trimester I will happily lay down some ground rules for potential interactions with an obviously pregnant woman. Please don’t ask “Are you sure it’s not twins?” We are sure. If it were twins we’d let you know.
The modern marvel of ultrasound technology gives a much better glimpse into the womb than someone sizing up a belly in the grocery store and declaring it twice as large as he (generally only men do this) would have expected. Any mention of “surprise triplets” is also highly un-necessary and not at all amusing.
pregnant by a male co-worker. Okay, he said this nearly a month ago, but I’m still mad. I realize that people feel that they need to acknowledge an obvious pregnancy in some way, so I suggest the following: “Congratulations!” If you need to go any further, offer to carry something heavy or hand over a snickers bar.
“Please don’t ask: Are you sure it’s not twins? We are sure. If it were twins we’d let you know. ”
Comments on how long a pregnancy is dragging on are also unhelpful. Trust me; no one feels the length of a pregnancy more than the expecting mother, so an acquaintance’s amazement that “You haven’t had that baby yet?” is hard to take. I was also recently accused of being 10 months
The trouble with being pregnant in Juneau also lies in the number of people who know you and the look of confusion and fear in their eyes when they see how pregnancy has transformed you into the humungous, haggard creature they see waddling

“The Bartlett and Birth Center websites offer a plethora of more information for expecting mothers.” through the ice-cream aisle. It is terrifying, but temporary, so try to conceal your horror please. However, despite these issues, pregnancy in Juneau also has a positive side. This town offers many services, classes and options for pregnant women. Pregnancy massage, offered by the Juneau Family Birth Center is one of the best services available for pregnant women, in my opinion. The birth center has a special massage table with room for a growing belly. Some insurance plans will cover massage if you have a doctor’s referral, or expecting moms can splurge and treat themselves to a relaxing hour. The birth center also offers prenatal yoga classes on Monday nights from 5:30 to 6:45 for $6 or pay as you can. The class is taught by a certified instructor and is specifically geared towards pregnant women. Partners are encouraged to also attend but I have yet to get my husband onto a mat. In my normal life I’d much rather do a cardio workout and really feel like I’m accomplishing something than spend an hour stretching, but as a pregnant lady, yoga feels amazing. The stretching helps avoid leg cramps and other discomfort and, as a working mother of a two year old, it’s great to just take an hour out of my day for myself in the company of my peers. Bartlett hospital and the birth center offer birthing classes which not only are helpful but a rite of passage for pregnant women. Everyone has a funny birthing class story to tell. In some ways these classes are most important for expecting fathers, orienting them to what is going to happen and teaching them how to time contractions and the breathing techniques. I’ll admit that when I finally went into labor with my daughter I couldn’t remember anything from the class other than they recommended walking. I kept insisting that my husband and I go on a walk while he timed the contractions, stayed in touch with the hospital, drove me there when they suggested we come in and then reminded me how to breathe through each con-
traction. I honestly don’t know what I would have done if my husband hadn’t educated himself at the birthing class, possibly delivering our daughter on the twin lakes path as I walked to the hospital or winding up like a cliché from a movie, screaming for the pain meds/death. In December Bartlett offers a weekend of intensive child birth classes on December first and second from noon to five. In January they offer a six week course on Thursdays from January 3 to February 7 from 6:30 to 9:00. Both classes meet at the Robert F. Valliant Administration Building Classroom, which is located between the main Bartlett parking lot and the front of the building. Bartlett also offers a Breast Feeding Success and Newborn care class, which I probably should have gone to the first time around, although I didn’t. According to the Bartlett Beginnings website, “Topics in this class which runs for 3 weeks on Mondays starting December 3rd include initiating and continuing to breastfeed as well as care for the newborn.” The Breast Feeding Success classes are also in the Robert F. Valliant classroom. La Leche League also holds monthly meetings at 9:30 at the Birth Center on the first Saturday of the month. I’ve never attending this either but it’s great to know that women who need support in their efforts to breast feed their babies have so many options. Pregnancy has its difficult moments wherever you are but taking advantage of what our community has to offer certainly helps. The Bartlett and Birth Center websites offer a plethora of more information for expecting mothers. And if nothing else, a pregnant woman can at least enjoy the cool weather in Juneau about 98% of the time.
Hannah Lindoff grew up in Juneau and returned to the community after graduating college. She now lives with her husband Anthony, daughter Marigold and dog Haagu on Mountainside. Hannah can be reached at htslotnick@gmail.com

pancake in the King household is a very serious business…as is pure Vermont maple syrup! First it means that it’s Saturday and if it has extra spices, fruits and gingerbread then it must Contributed be close to Christmas or even by Amber King better Christmas morning. My girls clamber for spots in the kitchen helping crack eggs, retrieve and return items from the fridge and pantry, smelling and guessing which spices are what and of course tak-

They usually eat them much faster than I can produce them in the cast iron griddle but that makes them all the more eager and delighted to get a hot ginger flapjack off the stove and smother in light and nutty sauce!
