Rain, Rain, Go Away!
W
elcome to February! Let’s hope this month isn’t as gloomy and lackluster as January. I feel like I touched on the gloom last month in my column and even gave tips about getting outside to shake the winter blues but I am still feeling it as I am sure many of you are. I do admit, there have been more than a few times during the rainy days where I didn’t take my own advice of throwing on rain gear and taking a walk around the neighborhood and instead sat inside eating junk and watching movies. Switching up routines is especially hard when there isn’t really a foreseeable incentive. This month I decided to shift my focus on changing things up within the home or living space. When it’s pouring buckets outside, maybe it’s a good time to clean, pick up a new craft or hobby, or finish a project that’s on the back burner. In last month’s By Anna Hoke
edition Randi Wilson had a great article about cleaning up clutter, and that is something that I could certainly do around our house. If your house is clutter free then consider painting a wall or redecorating. It’s refreshing to have a “new” room in
the house, even if that means moving a couch or light fixture and adding a new pillow or some sort of decor. I invite you to pick your indoor passion or find something different to do in the house. It could be learning to cook a new dish, tying flies, knitting, labeling drawers, or even going through closets and weeding out clothes to donate or
consign. And when all else fails, give yourself rules! Do just two things on your to-do list and then feel good about accomplishing those two things. It could be as small as clearing off the table of the unwanted mail and knickknacks that pile up or vacuum a room. And if all else fails, write! I’ve found writing to be very entertaining as well as therapeutic. I don’t consider myself a professional writer, though I do enjoy it and it helps me to narrow my focus and it pulls me away from distractions like the TV, Facebook, or even wondering worries in my own head. Whatever your indoor (or outdoor) hobby or task might be, I challenge you to do it if your head is as rained-out as mine. I hope you have a lovely February and Happy Valentine’s Day! THE
COLD AND FLU
S
o I didn’t get a chance to read the book I mentioned last month, by author David McRaney, called You Are Now Less Dumb. So while I can’t formally review it for you, I am still putting the premise into action, both as a parent and a professional - I’m allowing myself to see things differently than I had believed them to be, and all of a sudden I have had to act differently, big changes and small! However, I also had the experience of watching an example play out that made me appreciate that sometimes critical review of both our beliefs and the supposed evidence will leave our perceptions and assumptions intact and validated. I’ll share an example that I’ll try to keep from getting too technical, because the conclusion may just help get you through this nasty cold and flu season we are in the midst of.
A Naturopathic Doctor posted in a professional chat group about an article a patient had brought to her questioning the wisdom of trying to boost immunity through natural therapies during cold and flu season. I had the opportunity to watch a group of like-minded doctors question their long held belief about immunity - innate vs. acquired and how natural therapies impact wellness and healing in dealing with something like a common cold or the flu. Despite having been authored by an ER doctor from one of New York’s more well known hospitals, it wasn’t a well written article that the patient had brought in. Lacking was any specificity when discussing which natural therapies were actually in question (though links embedded in the digital version did lead to a list of therapeutic interventions that included mostly food and nutrient remedies). The
article also poked fun at a certain inflammatory. One doctor listed famous TV doctor (“America’s Doctor”, some of the following modalities used who does sometimes make himself to support immune function and an easy target, I’ll admit!) The author balance: accused the celebrity physician Warming sock treatment of panhandling Far infrared therapy “expensive placebos” and then stated that Hydrotherapy (compresses, “even if they did workcontrast showers, you wouldn’t want humidified air, etc.) them to!” The article Homeopathy, Cell Salts presumed to explain that these remedies all Hydration work by increasing the Antimicrobial Essential Oils inflammatory response of the innate immune By Dr. Summer Beattie, ND Antiviral herbs in tincture, pill, tea or whole food system when exposed preparations to the cold or flu virus - these innate immune responses would include things like fever, cough, mucous production, and body aches. He purposed that this whole system is archaic, ineffective at fighting infection and not to be encouraged. He then (in the embedded link) sited some articles posted at the Cochrane Library (a reputable collection of medical articles) as reference that these various remedies do little to no good in preventing or treating the cold or flu. Instead he concludes, it is the acquired immune system that does all the work. He concluded that the best course of action, should you contract a cold or flu virus was to suppress innate immune response symptoms and just wait. At the very end, he did mention four actually important and useful preventative measures: 1) wash your hands 2) keep a balanced diet 3) maintain good sleep habits 4) minimize stress It was an encouraging exercise to watch my peers thoughtfully address this patient’s concern over this article. They too posted links to published research archived in the US National Library of Medicine Pub-Med Central Resources showing how things like Vit. C actually show a positive regulator of T-cell maturation (a primary component of the acquired immune system) and how zinc plays a role in T-cell activation. N-acetylcysteine stimulates natural killer cell activity; it is not

Phytonutrients and culinary plants and spices Bone broths If you do have flu symptoms, see your primary care Doctor or Nurse Practitioner right away. Tamiflu (an anti-viral medication) may be appropriate and is often most effective if started within about 48 hours of symptoms, and has been reported to work well in the type of flu presenting with high fever and severe body aches. Juneau has some great resources for combining natural and standard medical care. Because a s one o f my
colleagues said, the problem truly is that it is too complex an issue for an “article”. There is both right and wrong in the article and very little discussion of the middle, which is where the value to most people lies. I was excited to see the openness to question our paradigm, and see the stories of actual patients they are caring for validate many natural therapies. I also greatly appreciated the doctors who combined prescription drugs with natural therapies and co-cared for patients with other practitioners of different perspectives. After all, it is the result we get from our action that matters most. The beauty of a holistic approach to health and wellness is you can blend the best of both curative and symptomatic relief to tailor a plan optimal to you. Most of these natural remedies really are not expensive if done at home. You personally may not find one modality helpful while another person does. Sometimes just one little thing makes a huge difference or you may find that you need a combination of remedies. In my experience, natural remedies have a synergistic effect when used together. Remember, you really should start preparing for flu
season long in advance by getting your nutrient status and overall vitality in optimal condition.

Marsala pairs well with neutrals like warm taupe and greys. Because of its burnished undertones, Marsala also complements metallic shades of gold and bronze, and shades of blue in royal and navy. Pantone predicts Marsala will be especially prominent in striping and floral patterns found in upholstery fabric, rugs, table linens, bedding and dishware. n the past I’ve discussed the importance of air sealing. In this case I’m going to discuss a specific example of air sealing your home. A properly air sealed home will get you the most bang for your buck when it comes to an energy rating audit reward. I’ll get to the specific area for an example of air sealing later in the article but first let us refresh our memory on the definition and benefits of air sealing. Our homes have an enormous amount of heated air in them. This is air that we have spent our hard earned dollars to heat. Let us say our home is 1200 square feet and we have 8 foot ceilings. That amounts to about 9600 cubic feet of heated air. The goal with air sealing is to try to keep that heated air inside our home and keep the cold air outside. The air we lose through cracks and gaps out of our homes means the replacement air

coming in through the gaps and cracks needs to be heated. Air will naturally go from cold to warm or the difference between warm air and cold air creates a pressure differential.
Dryers and range top exhaust have the same effect or more sometimes. This ventilation is absolutely necessary. Don’t get me wrong, always run the ventilation to get rid of this moisture laden air. We turn Stopher Construction works so well in this climate on our bathroom fan to exhaust because it is a balance system moisture laden air from a shower, which meaning we exhaust the same amount is necessary for our health and that of of air we bring in and transfer the heat our home, now we are pumping about to that air. HRVs are expensive but 80 cubic feet of air out of our homes that definitely worth the investment, but gets replaced from air coming through only if the home is sealed tight so we the gaps and cracks that needs to be can control all the air. HRVs mean heated. Say we leave the fan on for an nothing if your losing cubic feet of air to hour. We created a pressure differential neverland. gaps and cracks can add up to having a window or door open all year round. Areas where these gaps and cracks are often found include around windows, doors, light switch boxes, phone jacks, outlet boxes, lighting fixture boxes, plumbing pipes, and electrical wires. Now let me show you a specific example of air leakage and how one gap adds up to a lot of airflow and other dangers.
The Example
We bought our home in June and my wife decided it was time to update the 70’s light fixtures. She has been ordering a couple of new ones every couple of months. Every time I replaced a fixture I would seal the box the wires were in, you know the usually round box that holds the wires. The garage is not that tight so its probably not pulling a lot of air from the house, it is probably getting its air from around the garage door or somewhere easy. Now say the dryer is off in the garage and I turn on the ventilation fans in my home, my daughter is in the shower and I’m cooking. Well, I’m probably not cooking but the range top vent is moving air in the kitchen 10 feet from the garage door and the bathroom vent is moving air, now I have a pressure difference between the house and the garage, especially when you add the temperature difference between the house and the garage. Cold air is definitely moving from the garage to the house, I couldn’t measure the amount of air without some cool gadgets, but I could certainly feel it on my hand next the door trim.
The Scary Part
So I have cool air coming into my house through a gap around the door in my dining room that leads to the garage. Do you want the hear the really scary thing about this type of air leakage?

WERE YOU
born IN A barn?
“The other scary monster in the garage is the boiler, a carbon monoxide producing, fuel fired, combustion chamber that heats water to heat my home.”
Okay, I’ll tell you anyway. I don’t park a car in the garage, but if I did, the carbon monoxide from the exhaust would be coming directly into my house. Even if you drive the car in, shut it off, then close the garage door, studies have shown a huge spike in carbon monoxide levels in the home. A little bit of carbon monoxide won’t kill you but the long term effects of exposure to low levels of carbon monoxide aren’t good for you. I don’t store any hazardous materials in the garage but I sometime have a gas can or some oil in the garage for a few days. The other scary monster in the garage is the boiler, a carbon monoxide producing, fuel fired, combustion chamber that heats water to heat my home. What if that fuel fired combustion chamber backdrafts a little bit of exhaust into the garage. Well the exhaust ends up in my house. About a month back we ran out of fuel and I knew right away when the boiler didn’t fire up but there was a strong smell of diesel in the house. Not good.
“I used a spray foam to seal the gap and then I re-installed the trim.”
Back to the Example
So with the trim off the garage side of the door, I used a spray foam to seal the gap and then I re-installed the trim. I just sealed a

121 sq inch hole between my garage and house with very little time and effort and we all feel a little healthier already. Small gaps and cracks really can add up throughout a home. The example above is just on a single door and it resulted in almost a square foot opening to the outside. When you add up an entire house full of windows, doors, outlet boxes, electrical switch boxes, and other areas it could easily add up to having one window open, possibly two windows open, or a door or two. Thats a lot of heat loss or cold air infiltration in the cold winter months. Like my Dad would always say when I left the door open, “Close the door! OPEN HOUSES — Seeing Is Believing O
ne thing is true in real estate: sellers should never underestimate where they might pick up a buyer. With the multitude of ways that buyers can shop for a home now, sellers could get a buyer from just about anywhere. Your Realtor knows this better than anyone, and should be utilizing every avenue of marketing available, from advertising in various places, to entering your listing into the Multiple Listing Service, thereby making it available to other agents and to websites like Realtor.com. One aspect to consider when marketing your home is hosting an Open House. While the effectiveness of an open house event in the actual selling of a house is controversial, there is no doubt that open houses serve a unique purpose in selling homes. Essentially, open houses offer a no-pressure way for serious buyers to view a home. They are also a nod in your Realtors direction, as it can be a way for him or her to gain new clients. An open house is a powerful marketing tool that your Realtor can use to help sell your home, and here’s why:
16
W W W.
1.
It will make your home more visible.
If your home has been on the market for a while and it’s not getting as much attention as you’d like, advertising for an open house will get your property back out there. A p ro p e r l y advertised open house will effectively let buyers, agents, and even your neighbors, know that your house is on the market. It will have the potential to attract a high volume of foot traffic, and it may remind active buyers that your listing is still an option for them.
2.
It will bring buyers to you.
Chances are, a buyer has already seen the inside of your home via the internet. If a home has been represented well online, a
SEAKLIVING
.COM
serious buyer will want to verify it in person. Even if a buyer is ultimately not interested in purchasing your home, they may know people who would be. You just don’t know how far that reach can go. Attending an open house is one of the top ways that home buyers research the home that they are looking to buy.
3.
It will give you feedback.
One of the most useful benefits to hosting an open house is that it will provide invaluable feedback to the seller. Buyers and non-buyers alike can offer their candid opinions about the house, which the seller can use to his or her advantage. Most attendants won’t hesitate to tell your Realtor their reactions to everything from the price, to the number of bathrooms, or the paint job. If there are negative comments, you’ll know what
elements that you need to correct, and if there are positive comments, your Realtor will know what assets to highlight when marketing your home. Don’t lose out on By Amanda Pilley the opportunity to attract a buyer by deciding to not host open house. Instead, work with your real estate agent to implement a clear strategy toward getting the maximum results from the event. You’ll be able to make use of your open house to gain marketable knowledge, showcase your property, and attract buyers. Sometimes, just getting buyers to physically step inside a home is all it takes for them to make the leap to a home sale.

Instructions: Wrap the bacon around venison fillet seasoned with cocoa nibs and secured with twine, salt and pepper to taste. Pour the red wine, port, orange zest, shallots, bay leaf and thyme into a sauce pot and reduce to 1/8 original volume. Mix the venison stock reduction with the wine reduction in a sauce pot and reduce until desired sauce consistency; then strain. Add the butter and chocolate to sauce and mix until completely incorporated. Next, add the blackberries (save a few for final plating) to the sauce and set aside. Add the olive oil to sauté pan on a high heat, letting the oil barely reach its smoking point, and add the venison. Keep cooking the venison, searing it on all sides until reaching desired done-ness and the bacon until it is crisped. When finished rest venison for at least five minutes. In the meantime sauté mushrooms with the blanched turnips and in butter and finish with chives, season to taste, and plate equally. Unwrap the venison, cut filet into medallions and plate and add sauce equally. Garnish venison with fresh berries, chives and a few drops of olive oil. Enjoy with a nice glass of wine (from your dish) Happy Valentine’s Day From my table to yours~
