Local Business

Welcome to February! This month I have been thinking a lot about local business and how there can be such a ripple effect and benefit when buying local. My experience most often leads to conversation, which leads to connections, which leads to learning something very valuable either pertaining to my original task or sometimes something entirely different. Recently I painted my kiddo’s bedroom and I exclusively went to Juneau’s Valley Paint for my supplies, paint and advice. My first concern was that I am pregnant and I wasn’t sure if it was a safe or smart choice to do this type of activity and what kind of chemicals I might be exposing myself to. With clearance from my doctor with direction to paint in a well ventilated room with frequent breaks, I preceded onward with the project but was still hesitant. I asked employees several

times for reassurance about what type of paint is best for me to use and if I should wear a mask. Valley Paint carries a variety of paint, one of which was safe for use by pregnant women. It has no VOC, or volatile organic compounds, and is certified asthma and allergy friendly. It was comforting to work with people who have the knowledge and the passion to help me

find exactly what I was looking for. After choosing my colors, and while they prepared the paint for me, I spoke to Charlie; the owner of Valley Paint. I told him of my plans. I had ambitiously printed off some murals I found on Pintrest with absolutely no idea how to pull them off. Luckily Charlie knew exactly what products I needed and he even pulled tape out, placed it on his wall and explained exactly how to achieve what I wanted. I honestly would have made a huge mess without that advice and special tape and technique. The project was a success and I am happy to share the results with you! Local businesses are often derived from an initial passion in a hobby, past time or love for a product. It was so much fun to share with the staff photos of my final results and share my gratitude for their help and the quality of their service and products. Another wonderful thing that Valley Paint does is keep track of what paint you’ve purchased in the past. If you need more of a color, and you don’t remember exactly what it was, or what type of shine -- no problem. I went back several times to add to my supplies and get more paint and it was so great for them to just pull up the information in the computer and have it ready within minutes. This is just one of my experiences with local businesses and what a difference it makes when someone has knowledge and passion for their work.

This however can go the other direction where someone has a negative experience with a business. As business owners (and staff) we have to remember that our customers are incredibly valuable. Business owners need to be diligent about appreciating our clients, not taking them for granted and express our appreciation because our clients make our business possible. They make our business thrive or dive. Punctuality is important. Honesty is important. Negative client experiences do get shared throughout the community, businesses who aren’t reliable get blacklisted. Here’s the flip side to that. Most mistakes are not deal breakers. At least not for me. I am not perfect, I have made mistakes both in business and in my personal life. I truly value the way a business handles their mistakes as much as I value their strengths. Just because a mistake is made doesn’t mean it’s an irreversible situation. Apologies and humbleness go a long way. I am so thankful to all my clients, readers, writers, contractors, printers, deliverers who make this publication possible, this magazine would not exist without you. How Small is too Small? Probably because my biggest challenge has been to practice the art of simplicity, I’m intrigued by the tiny house movement. There have been times I’ve even really wanted to actually try living in one of these trendy creations – Pinterest, magazines, and now even a HGTV show dedicated to tiny living all make the endeavor seem not only achievable but comfortable. Could I do it with husband, two kids and a dog? My husband always quickly brings me back to reality – I don’t know how to live this small. Just having moving from our home to a smaller condo had been an on-going exercise in downsizing. Living in a smaller space would most certainly require

keeping only the basic necessities and a few things that you just love. There would be no room for anything else. In order to meet the strict definition of a “tiny home”, the dwelling should not exceed 400 square feet. Anything under 1,000 square feet is considered “small”. There are lots of reasons people have chosen to start living smaller. Finances, however, are often the primary reason people first start looking at renting or owning a smaller home. If you live in Juneau you know that “affordable” and “housing” rarely belong in the same sentence together unless the topic is the lack of both.

“Finances, however, are often the primary reason people first start looking at renting or owning a smaller home.”

How Small is too Small?

The 2014 Alaska Housing Assessment is a wealth of statistical information on the state of housing in the City and Borough of Juneau. According to this report, the average size of a home in the City and Borough of Juneau is 1646 sq ft. Depending on the source you site, the national average is somewhere around 2700 square feet and growing. The lack of availability for these smaller than average size houses also pushes greater than 32% of Juneau’s households into what is considered a cost-burdened living situation, meaning they spend more than 30% of their income on housing costs. The affordability of renter-occupied units is even lower, with 40% of renters considered cost-burdened. This makes the move toward homeownership for renters even more challenging. Then the quality of many of these homes for the cost is an entirely different and

difficult subject.

The good news is, that with the tiny house movement sweeping the nation and books like Marie Kondo’s The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up becoming best-selling inspirations, you can start finding ways to live smaller and yet live fuller and more comfortably. I also encourage you to keep involved in the conversations I see happening around the topic of providing housing solutions for Juneau’s growing population. There are people involved in real estate, home re-model and new construction, city government, non-profits and more who are all passionate about addressing the needs for housing in Juneau. The new year is just barely off to a start with opportunity for it to be a great year to do things differently…..when the community comes together change happens. How can you help?

WAYS TO PREPARE FOR STORMY WEATHER

(BPT) - No matter where you live, the weather can be unpredictable any time of year. Weather can disrupt your family’s routine, but a little preparation can mean reducing the stress that unexpected weather events can cause. Preparing for storms or other weather conditions just takes a few practical, proactive steps that can save you time, money and give you peace of mind. Prep your family. Make sure everybody in the family is equipped with everyone’s phone numbers (not just on phones), in case batteries go dead or service is inaccessible. Create a practical

plan for what to do if school buses are delayed or canceled, or if Mom and Dad can’t get home from work on time. Designate safe places for everyone to go or meet in the neighborhood during a weather emergency. Make sure older children who may be home alone know where to find emergency supplies such as flashlights if the power goes out before parents can get home, so they feel confident about handling any unexpected situation. Prep your car. Invest in the best tires, and ensure that they’re in tip-top condition to protect you and your

family during icy or snowy weather. Check your tire pressure to make sure the PSI is at optimal levels recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer, since tire pressure can decrease around 1 PSI per every 10 degrees the temperature goes down. Make sure you have a good spare tire. Keep your vehicle gassed up when temperatures are colder, to prevent gas line freezing, and make sure you’re caught up on maintenance such as oil changes, safety inspections and manufacturer recalls. Make room in your trunk for emergency supplies like

jumper cables, a first-aid kit, blankets and a safety flare, in case you are stuck in your car for any length of time. Prep your home. Feel ready for any weather conditions by assembling an accessible emergency box, complete with flashlights and spare batteries, bottled water and non-perishable food, plus a first-aid kit. Then, be prepared for power outages due to weather events by investing in a generator. Automatic standby generators from Kohler are permanently installed outside a home, similar to a central air conditioning unit.

The generators connect to a home’s electrical system and run on natural gas or propane. When power is lost, automatic standby generators turn on within 10 seconds, even when nobody is home, and units can be remotely monitored from a smartphone or laptop. Larger generators can power everything from lights and HVAC to sump pumps and home security systems. Smaller units can power a few key circuits. For more information on generators, visit www.kohlergenerators. com. Having a generator can prevent a host of inconveniences, from food

spoilage and lost communications to loss of heat and lighting. Thinking ahead before the unexpected happens saves time and money - while relieving your worries - during any kind of storm. Being prepared is worth the investment, offering you and your family peace of mind. You may not be able to control the weather, but you can absolutely control how you prepare and respond to it, no matter what the forecast.

All things Rose

Recipe

Contributed by Amber King

Everything is Coming Up Roses Just in time for Valentine’s Day... Rose can come in the form of essential oil, rose absolute, rose hips, rose water, rose petals, and there are so many uses in the culinary world. Most of our roses come from South America these days, the old world of the Mediterranean and amazing cuisines from Turkey and the Greek isles. 200 million years old... the oldest flower brings myths, loves and legends. The first cultivated roses were 5,000 years ago in ancient Mesopotamia. Sargon I, king of the Akkadians brought vines, figs and rose trees back from an expedition along the River Tigris.

Confucius wrote that the Emperor of China owned over 600 books about roses. The Greeks brought them to Rome, women in Athens dance naked wearing crowns of roses around the Temple of Hymen to symbolized the innocence of Golden Age. From heraldic symbols to Aphrodite Roses were the most coveted flower for centuries. Empress Josephine collected 2,562 different varieties in the French gardens of Malmaison. But I’ve had rose on my mind for a while. Since digging into herbalism as a teenager cooking with flowers and herbs has been paramount in my world. Cooking with Flowers by Miche Bachner is a fantastic

Feburary Phirini or Firni (An ancient traditional Indian/Pakistani/Afghan milk pudding with pistachios and cardamom made for all celebrations and occasions). Serves 6

Pistachio pieces, saffron petals and rose petals for garnish

starting point. While Alaska can be a challenging environment for rose they do have several varieties of wild roses and also cultivate varieties with some care and direct sunlight. While one of the easiest recipes to make with rose petals is to simply candy them, or make honey. To make Honey you simply infuse honey with flower petals. Find you’re local honey in your town or on the honey.com finder http://www.honey. com/honey-locator/profile/chugiak-heights currently Mr. Alaskahoneyman is the only place listed in AK. But any quality organic honey will substitute if needed. The basic formula is 1-2 tablespoons to 1 cup (8oz) of honey. Place in a clean dry jar, you

Preparation 1. In a large heavy saucepan, bring the milk almost to a boil, then remove from the heat. Remove 1/2 cup of the milk and set aside. Gently mix the rose petals and saffron petals into the warmed milk in the pan and let infuse for 15 to 20 minutes. Strain the milk through cheesecloth or a fine strainer, discarding the petals. 2. Pour the infused milk back into the saucepan, add the sugar and vanilla, and bring to a simmer over medium heat. 3. Whisk the cornstarch into the reserved 1/2 cup milk until there are no lumps. Add the cornstarch mixture to the pan and simmer over low heat, stirring gently with a rubber spatula, for 7 to 10 minutes, or until it is thickened and coats

may chop and dry any fresh flowers or herbs, or air or oven drying method if in a rush. Stir in herbs with a wooden spoon or chopstick (avoid any metal) and let them infuse at least 5 days, stir if they rise to the top, the longer they are in the more intense the flavor will bee (wink). Strain into clean jar and keep in a cool dry place out of sunlight. Enjoy! Rim your favorite cocktail glass with the honey, or get creative, it’s the month of love! Be inspired, loving and full of growing light and happiness for the spring that will eventually come! Enjoy this fantastic ancient pudding as well for dessert! Pair with a sweet muscat (in very small portions) or sparkling rose cava.

Ladle into separate dessert dishes and sprinkle the top with ground pistachios. Cool in the refrigerator. Serve chilled or at room temperature.
