BEFORE & AFTER
I
n this remodel, we addressed a laundry room that was very much underutilized in its original configuration. This room actually had a considerable amount of space but the poor layout and lack of storage made it an awkward place to work within. Since we were starting with a large blank slate, it made sense to add the function of a home office or craft center to transform this into a multi-purpose room. To maximize the laundry room as-
pect of this space, we selected a front load washer and dryer and repositioned them next to one another. A solid surface countertop extends over the top of each unit and on over to the far wall to achieve an amazing amount of counter space. At 42” high, this countertop is considered standard bar height and is a great surface to fold laundry on and even double as a large work surface for projects too! A barstool offers seating at the work center

created with cabinetry designed for home offices. The same type of cabinetry from Showplace Wood Products was used to achieve linen storage to the left of the washer & dryer and cleaning supplies located above the units as well. To break up the appearance of upper cabinetry and to also better signify the second function of this space, a floating shelf offers display space and easy access to items used more frequently. Metal, flip up doors not only add a modern element to this design but they also tie in with the silver appliances and their metallic sheen offsets the prominence of the dark cabinetry too. With the lack of windows and natural lighting in this room, it was important to incorporate additional lighting into the design. While the two original fixtures were maintained for their vintage aesthetic, under cabinet lighting ensures that every task is well lit. This type of task lighting was also achieved with the light fixtures that wash the face of the bookcase on the opposing wall as well.
help bounce the light around and to also add dimension to the space with its texture and subsequent sparkle. Luxury vinyl floor tiles by Centiva incorporate metallic flecks that tie in with the other metallic elements and also resemble vintage flooring from the same era as where the light fixtures came from. Of course, no space is complete without a punch of color and the darker teal accent wall does just that by providing a fun, bold statement. With everything said and done, this empty space became a multi-functional room for the whole household to enjoy; even making the menial task of laundry a bit more enjoyable! Samples of all materials used on our projects can be seen at the Bauer/Clifton Interiors studio located at 119A 2nd Street. The Importance of Indoor Air W
ell it’s winter and skiing is looking good, people are skating on the ponds, the snow machines are gassed up, and the snowshoes are dusted off. By Greg Stopher But when you’re not Stopher Construction outdoors enjoying the snow you’re probably sitting by the fire trying to thaw out or at least dreaming about it on these short days. With the lack of daylight, you are probably indoors a bit more than you’d like to admit. With more time spent indoors, indoor air quality can be a concern. As you take steps to tighten up your home to save energy, even in the warm and mixed climates, it’s important to think about what you’re bringing into your home that might affect your air quality and your health. Young lungs, old lungs, and every lung for that matter deserve to breathe clean, healthy air.
tough. I didn’t need to wear a dust mask, I thought I could handle fiberglass in a tshirt, I was not affected by mold. Well, it didn’t take too many years to figure out that I wasn’t making smart choices. Now I can’t be in a room without being fully suited and donning a respirator when I know I’ll be exposed to mold, fiberglass, or heavy dust. Everyone has a different tolerance or threshold to certain chemicals or air hazards but even the people with the highest tolerance will eventually succumb to the affects of these toxins if the exposure is great enough. Bad indoor air quality can come from a variety of sources including outside the home. Indoor air quality can be two to five times worse than the outdoor air. When you’re spending a solid 20 hours or more inside your homes, the indoor air quality can greatly affect your health - immediately or down the road. When I go through a home, I look for all the different sources that could be causing a poor air quality. Moisture control is usually number one on the list. Look in areas on the interior where water is prevalent. Bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms
When I was younger and doing construction work I thought I was invincible and
all have direct sources of water. Look for leaks and wet materials in these areas that could be creating the problem. Moisture can also be a problem indirectly throughout an entire house in the form of water vapor or humidity. Our bodies like a humidity around 25% to 35% and with an elevated humidity above 60%, mold can grow and flourish which will have a significant impact on air quality. When the humidity reaches these higher levels and the vapor is leaked through the building envelope it will condense on the colder surfaces like when you get a bottle of beer out of the fridge. I have seen this happen in attics where it is actually creating a rainstorm as the vapor condenses on the underside of a roof deck. Another potential source of moisture within a house could be coming from the crawlspace. If a crawlspace is not properly sealed the moisture in vapor form could be coming from the soils below. The warm air within the house accelerates the evaporation from the crawlspace and the home acts like a chimney for the vapor and then ends up in the attic as explained above.
On the exterior of the home moisture management is just as important as it is inside the home. A poor flashing detail, a leaking roof, or a building envelope that is leaking will create indoor moisture problems. Water from the roof should be run at least 5 feet away from the house and the slope and drainage around the home should slope away from the house for at least 5 feet. Caulking is not a solution to leaks in the building envelope. Flashings must be properly installed to take moisture to the exterior of the building. Caulking between different materials, such as between a vinyl window and the siding will temporarily eliminate a leak but it is merely a short-term solution. Through the season the cold and warm fluctuation will create expansion and contraction of the different materials at a different rates causing the caulk to eventually fail. In this case, a properly installed flashing is the key to moisture management. Combustible appliances such as furnaces, boilers, hot water heaters, and fuel burning kitchen ranges and ovens can greatly affect indoor air quality in a number of ways.

Carbon monoxide is a huge concern with combustible appliances and fireplaces. Make sure all of these appliances are properly vented to the outdoors and have them checked regularly. Do not skimp on a carbon monoxide detector and do your research on them, a person cannot smell carbon monoxide, and cheap or poorly rated carbon monoxide detector will only notify you when it is too late. The affects of carbon monoxide are irreversible. Again, as you take steps to tighten your home to reduce the energy you use, ask yourself where the combustible air is coming from. Combustible appliances must be supplied with air for combustion. Follow all manufacturers’ guidelines for installing and maintaining these appliances to ensure that the bad air is going outside. Attached garages are a source of carbon monoxide either from combustible appliances or vehicles. Do not warm your car up in your garage. The natural flow of air is from cold to warm, so cooler carbon monoxide laden air from the garage really wants to find its way into the home. To

December First Friday
The Importance of Indoor Air As a contractor, I have to be aware of potentially hazardous materials that may be disturbed in a home when performing a renovation project. A homeowner must also be very aware of these hazards especially if you’re going to complete renovations on your own. Asbestos containing materials are common in buildings before 1980 and were used as a fire retardant. Some materials that are known to contain asbestos are vinyl sheet and tile flooring as well as the adhesive and glue that holds these materials in place. Asbestos is very common in acoustical ceiling textures also known as popcorn texture, wall texture, mud and joint sheetrock compound. Asbestos can commonly be found in vermiculite insulation and other pipe insulations. If any of these items are to be disturbed have them tested and use a trained and qualified professional removal specialist. Another, material found and used in older homes is lead paint. Lead paint was common in homes up until 1978 when it was banned but I will test all homes for lead paint that are 1982 and older. If a painted surface is going to be disturbed such as
tearing out a wall or replacing a window that is known to be older than 1978 then it must be tested. There are easy to use over the counter test kits available and if lead is found, it’s important to utilize a certified lead renovator to remove it. Occupants of a home can also create a hazardous indoor air quality. Smoking, cleaning chemicals, furniture, and furnishings can be very hazardous to your health. The chemicals left behind by smoking are not good. As far as cleaning products, there are now a variety of options for green, natural, and non-hazardous home cleaners on the market that can work as well as the harsh cleaning products. If you can smell it, it is probably hazardous to your health or is covered up by a scent that is hazardous or unnatural, even if it smells like roses. Furniture and furnishings can be made of materials and chemicals that will off-gas into your home for many, many years creating even more hazardous indoor air quality. Formaldehydes and volatile organic compounds (voc) are commonly used to manufacture home furnishings. Look for low emission and low voc (volatile organic
compound) materials. Paints, cabinets, furniture, insulation, and carpets are a few items that should be researched to make sure they will not off-gas these chemicals. So as you tighten up your home, it’s important to be aware of indoor air quality. With the build-up of all the potentially hazardous indoor air it is no wonder it’s having an impact on health. Homes must be ventilated to exhaust, dilute, and eliminate indoor air irritants. More information can be found on the EPA website for Indoor Air Quality. Greg Stopher has over 16 years of experience in the construction field and earned a degree in Construction Technologies from the University of Alaska – Southeast. Robots Return to Juneau for the 6th Annual FIRST® LEGO® League Robot Jamboree Photos by Pat Barry
Juneau, AK (December 11, 2012) – On Saturday, December 8, Juneau hosted its 6th annual Robot Jamboree, the southeast regional qualifier for Alaska’s FIRST LEGO League. Fifteen teams from five different communities in Southeast competed in an all day event at R i ve r b e n d Elementary School. Over the last few months, 1,500 elementary and middle S ee
school students across the state and 250 in Southeast alone joined students from around the world who have risen to the 2012 F I R S T L E G O League (FLL) “Senior Solutions” Challenge. All FLL Challenges are based on a realworld topic that is universally relevant. In “Senior Solutions,” teams were asked to come up with viable solutions to these reallife problems in order to keep senior citizens engaged,
connected, and independent. Saturday’s teams presented a variety of inventions and outreach efforts to judges including GPS enabled canes, “smart” medicine cabinets and a shower head that automatically shampoos your hair. Teams also visited senior centers and offered training sessions on social networking and simply spent time with seniors in their community.

Throughout the season, teams are also asked to learn and embrace FIRST LEGO League’s Core Values, which in-

Teams, even in the heat of competition, were cheering each other on, offering help where possible, and celebrating the work of everyone that made it there.

JUNEAU ADULT HOCKEY ASSOCIATION
FOR THE WINTER SEASON
The Juneau Adult Hockey Association (JAHA) has made hockey one of the most exciting and accessible sports in Juneau. As one of Juneau’s longest running, year-round organized amateur sport, JAHA fea-

In September, the JAHA board made two changes designed to increase participation and enhance the experience for players from a broad spectrum of ability. The first change was the addition of a co-ed division for players 40 years old and older. The 40+ tier attracted enough players to field four teams. It features the broadest range of skill levels and had a season of close, competitive contests. The new di-

nity within the league,” said Laine Durgin JAHA president. We hope to expand the league even more and make next season as enjoyable as the last.”. The second change added more instruction for the developmental division, which is designed for players new to the game. This division featured practices in the winter 2012 season, but in the fall season, the division’s two teams received more coaching per player. Players received four days worth of instruction from experienced players who volunteered their time. Players also received a full slate of games so they could quickly put into play what they learned. “The developmental tier is a great opportunity for men and women with very little experience to try out hockey, be active, and have fun,” said JAHA board member Lorna Wilson, who joined fellow board member Darryl Tseu and Durgin as instructors Both decisions paid off, as the 250 players spanning 20 rosters illustrated. Games are played six nights a week at Treadwell Ice Arena, a community asset that houses hockey games, tournaments and figure skating. n a cold winter day in January there is nothing more comforting than a warm and hearty bowl of soup. In our house we cook with a Contributed large volume of beer by Amber King probably equal or more to what is actually imbibed upon. Beer is a great flavor enhancer to stews, sauces and just about everything under the sun. After a day of skiing at Eaglecrest this is one of our household favorites, usually prepped and waiting in our pressure cooker for us with a fresh loaf of bread and a cold Alaskan Amber of course.

If you would like to see more great recipes for cooking with beer be sure to bookmark: www.alaskanbeer.com/our-brew/ cooking-with-our-beer.html If you haven’t used a pressure cooker before it’s by far my favorite cooking vessel only second to my vintage well-loved cast iron skillet. They are our main cooking pots around here and for some healthier and quicker ways to prepare meals they take the task at hand, half the time, up the nutrition and with a busy family, are essential for us. 80’s and her blog is a great resource so please check it out. She also has advice for purchasing depending on how much and what you would like to use it for, we have two stove top pressure cookers, an electric one and a traditional canner/pressure cooker for canning and jarring the season’s bounty. If you would like brown rice in 20 minutes or Chicken noodle soup with frozen meat that is falling off the bone in 20 minutes, a pressure cooker is key. Here are a couple more examples of cooking times: whole beef or venison roast with the gravy – 45 minutes. Artichokes – 15 minutes. Whole, long-grained rice – 5-6 minutes. Risotto – 8-10 minutes. Cheesecake – 12 minutes. Frozen chicken breasts – 10-12
minutes (and VERY tender). Mashed potatoes, 3-5 minutes, whole lamb, 35 minutes, etc, etc. If this sounds like it might be a good thing in your home then you might want to consider purchasing one, they’ve only been around since the mid 1600’s. You can also soak dried beans and pressure cook them yourself if you want to save a few bucks, but we’ll have to save that for another month. Here’s to a healthy happy home and new year to come. From my table to yours, enjoy…
