Letter from the Publisher New Y ear Goals Happy New Year! I cannot believe another year has past and we have to remember to write twenty sixteen on things. I am going to take a note from Courtney Wendel’s article within this edition and start a 100’s list. She explains that every year she writes a list of 100 things she wants to try to accomplish. I really like that approach because thinking of just one resolution is tough to encompass all the moving parts of life. She also splits her goals into categories and I thought I’d do the same. A quick gander at life, and these are the categories I tend to focus on and find importance in; health, happiness, financial, future, adventure, and home.
and I think it’s time to train and do something like that again. I am tempted to try to run a full marathon because I enjoy pushing myself, but my postpartum body is still recovering and I think that might be too much.
Next up, happiness. Everyday I find myself looking at life with a sparkle and wondering how I got so lucky, so I am certainly not lacking in the happiness department. In fact I often think how I couldn’t ask for anything more, but there is always one thing that comes to mind that I wish I could fix or change and that’s my husband’s knee. He has been in chronic pain for a number of years, unable to play the sports he loves and now even do day-to-day tasks without pain. I’d like to make a resolution to research anything I can to help him because I cannot imagine coping with constant pain like he does.
First of, Health. Health for me is the foundation for everything else in life, both mentally and physically. 1. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. I am a pretty healthy eater but it doesn’t hurt to continue your goals with a reminder to stay on track.
Financial. Ugh, watch my eyes glaze over and roll with the epitome of something I find little interest in but that I acknowledge is vital all the same. Every year I contribute to my IRA, it’s very important to plan for the future and retirement so I make a point to do that every year, and this year will be no different. 2016,
2. Run a half Marathon. I’ve run the half marathon distance once before, while participating in the Klondike Road Relay Race

And then to the future. There are many things I’d like to do in the future but with a new baby at home, I need to be realistic. In the next year I’d like to: 1. Attend my brother in law’s graduation on the East Coast. This will be our first flight postpartum with baby and I am already nervous about it. I don’t like the thought of disturbing other people but what I dislike even more is having an unhappy baby. Fingers crossed for a pleasant, non-crying flight for both of us. 2. Plant a garden. Last year we planted herbs in pots outside and inside my husband and I had a friendly competition growing habanero pepper plants using different types of soil and pots. Sad to say his didn’t really take off so we jointly cared for mine, which eventually sprouted a single pepper. Adventure. There are a number of things I want to do with my baby this year in terms of adventure. I am so excited for summer because she will be old enough for her awesome hiking
2. Fishing with baby. Obviously baby won’t be fishing but I’d like to take her on the boat so that someday she might love the water as much as I do. Home. There are a number of improvements I’d like to do on our home but the biggest one is our backyard. It’s a pine cone infested, weedy, sand pit and we’ve got to get something going back there before baby needs some grass to play on. Those are just a few items from my 100’s list. I hope you enjoyed them and I hope you too create some goals to work at or look forward to in the New Year. Thanks again Courtney for the awesome idea! People
often hire me to hang artwork for them, because they tell me they are unsure where to put it. Unfortunately, people often hang their artwork awkwardly – either crowding too many pieces together or frankly, hanging pieces way plain too high.
of pictures. The first thing you need to do is trace all of the items you want to hang. This picture shows a grouping of 7 photos. All of them are 8×10 size, so 7 pieces of scrap paper all the same size. The 57” also applies to groups of pictures. Think of a group as ONE picture. After you arrange how you want them all to hang (doing this on the floor makes it easier), start with the center picture/pictures and get them at 57” on center. Then surround them with the rest of the group.
A general place to start is to layout all the artwork you want to hang. I take the pieces and lean them against the wall they will be displayed on. Once each piece has a home, I begin the hanging process. You will need at least a hammer, picture hangers, level and putty tabs (the stuff you hung your posters with in college).
Put small pieces of tape on the back and start trying different arrangements. Let the wall dictate the shape of the arrangement.
Lets talk about centering. Always hang your artwork at 57” on center. Confused? “On center” means that

the middle of the artwork is always at 57” (obviously, the hook will be higher). Interestingly, the 57” standard represents the average human eye-height and is regularly used as a standard in many galleries and museums.
Now you need to mark the place for each of your nail holes. Take each piece of paper off one at a time and place it on the back of the picture, then make a pencil mark where the nail will go. After you mark the nail hole, hang the paper back up. Then take a nail and put it right through the pencil mark. Repeat for all the pictures you are hanging. Then take off the paper and hang up your artwork.
In addition to being a pleasing height, the 57” on center tends to be a lot Groupings can be tough to lower than most people keep straight, this where you naturally hang their By Regina DiLauro-Fay use the putty. When I host 100’s parties in January, and mid-year 100’s parties around June, we usually go around the room and people pick things from their lists they want to share. People will write a range of things on their 100’s list: grandiose travel plans, people they want to prioritize seeing, projects they want to finish but have been putting off, and even simple things we don’t take seriously enough but should (the bed is a cell phone free zone). For example, a silly thing on my 100’s list a few years back was ‘skinny dip’. Yep, at 26 I finally went skinny dipping with friends at a lake on a glorious May day. That was on my list for three

track, a 100’s list is a perfect solution. Every year I buy a new spiral journal or diary, and then sit down and really think hard about my life for a few weeks. This is no time for arrogance and false modesty. I will be the first person to admit I am far from perfect, and I have several areas to improve upon. And a 100’s list is a perfect place to celebrate your strengths, and work on your weaknesses.

the things that were important even if it took me a while, and that gives me strength each year that I will accomplish more and more of my goals. Have I ever once completed everything on my list? Heck no! But I sure try. And what isn’t completed each year is a good base for the next year if you want it to be. Or, you can decide that after a year, it really wasn’t that important to you after all. And that is a perfectly ok.
A new year of goals, Excitement and hopes are high! P lease don’t screw it up. years before I finally did it. ‘Camp in Granite Basin’ was on my list for two years, and when we camped back there it was an incredible experience that actually made me a little sad it took so long to accomplish. But then I also had important things that aren’t glamorous at all like ‘get out of credit card debt’ and ‘support Trail Mix’. Then there are really personal ones that I haven’t done because it’s just really hard; my childhood cat of 10 years passed away a few years back, and I still can’t bring myself to look at her little urn without ugly crying, but I want to get to a point where I can open it and send some ashes to Memory Glass and ‘get two Memory Glass for kitty’ when I’m finally ready. I have found over the years, it is easier to break my list into six categories: personal relations, adventure, financial, reading, photography,

and your goals evolve. I couldn’t tell you off hand what was important to me three years ago, but when I look back at my 100’s list I have it written right there. And when comparing my lists’, I can see where I have grown as a person, where I accomplished

PART II. NEW YEAR, NEW BATHROOM Well
now that the holidays have passed we have a whole new year to plan out and get a new bathroom. Last month I talked about how I, or should I say my wife, is planning on remodeling our bathroom. I talked about how there are many things that I would like in a newly remodeled bathroom that don’t necessarily involve the finishes but more so the guts of the bathroom. Items like good lighting, good ventilation, and good heat. Those items, lighting, ventilation, and heat, kind of the guts of the bathroom, are what matter to me most. When I think about lighting I’m not necessarily thinking of the fixture itself but more so the quantity and quality of light. Amenities like warm towels and push button ventilation that is on a timer are a real plus. For me the hardest part about completing the bathroom will not be choosing the fixtures and finishes but finding the time. After all day working on other bathrooms why
would I want to come home and work on mine? Really, if I wait long enough my bathroom may come back into style. The pink matching sink, toilet, and tub were at one time in style. Avocado green was the color of choice at one point in time, who is to say that it won’t come back around. My bathroom doesn’t have any pretty colored tubs or toilets, so I can’t wait for my non-style bathroom to start trending. I know it’s time, time for a spa like bathroom. Now that I am leaving all the selections to the better half I only want a durable product to install. I am looking for materials that will hold up

to two kids. On that note let us look at a couple of trends in materials and finishes. Showers are going towards no thresholds between the shower floor and the bathroom floor. Showers are getting frameless enclosures or glass partial enclosures. The frameless glass and no threshold shower lets the bathroom flow into the shower showing off the natural earthy shower tile, as well as making the room feel larger. Shelves within the shower whether in niches or corner shelves help to clean up a shower. Don’t forget a step for leg shaving and if there is room a seat.

was renting a place in college that had one of these heart shaped jacuzzi tubs in a bathroom. The tub actually filled itself from the drain, there was no faucet, just By Greg Stopher hit a button, and it Stopher Construction filled up, granted the drain had a fresh water inlet that filled the tub. Gross. Today’s tubs have microbubbles that massage and jacuzzi jets that soothe, they even have heated head and back rests. Keep in mind that all the features on the newer tubs usually require dedicated electrical circuits and access to the pumps and heaters. Also, keep in mind that tubs come in alcove, drop-in, undermount, and stand alone. Each tub usually requires a different fixture setup. Vanities are also taking on less bulk in the cabinetry department. Vanities that

float off of the floor or floating vanities with solid surface countertops whether thin or bulky give a floating vanity a great look. A floating vanity also makes a room feel larger. Granite and Marble countertops have stood the test of time and are still the most popular choices. As with granite and marble any natural stone product is a good choice to put in a bathroom. Most natural products if treated properly will be almost bombproof in the durability department. Sinks are also getting a lot of attention in today’s spa like bathroom with undermount and vessel sinks made of porcelain, marble, glass, and copper to name a few. The vessel sinks are coming in many shapes and sizes with a lot of flair to stand out. Maybe the kids would wash their hands more if they had a cool, sleek waterfall type fixture to run their hands under. Fixtures come in many different finishes, pick a finish and use it throughout the entire bathroom. With lighting fixtures and lighting, think in layers. Overall, ambient lighting throughout the bathroom is what we have now although the shower doesn’t get much light for the combo
vent/light in the center of the bathroom ceiling and a vanity light over the vanity mirror just doesn’t cut it. The shower is dark and even the vanity mirror is dark. This old way of thinking about lighting just isn’t sufficient, with a new spa like bathroom we need the lighting to show it off. Think about layers of lighting. The overall ambient light is good but also think about adding lighting to the shower area. The shower area could use its own lighting. The lighting in the shower could help with shaving or it could be used as an accent lighting to show off all that beautiful tile that can be seen through the frameless clear shower door. The shower lighting can be used as a task light or accent lighting.
Accent lighting like under vanity lighting will also be an inviting feature and can act as a nightlight for a direction to the bathroom in the middle of the night. The different layers of lighting is what I find most important when thinking about the guts of a bathroom. As with lighting there are different layers going into today’s bathrooms. I am just going to mention these items like sound technology and hidden speakers or even bluetooth speakers in the shower head. I have seen the technology with the television screen in the vanity mirror. I would get one of these televisions in my vanity mirror if I spent all morning shaving and watching the stock market but I am just a carpen-

Two Easy Changes. A
friend of mine, who I regard as more health conscience than most, recently posted on her facebook page that she had read an article about toxic things people use in their homes on a daily or regular basis and that some of the topics surprised her – which surprised me! I guess I often assume people just know and have decided one of several things: 1) it isn’t important enough to change 2) it is to expensive to change 3) it is too hard to change. So here are just two things you could replace or eliminate in your home that do not fit into any of those three categories. They are important, they are cheap and they are easy to change. Start the new year with these small changes and you’ll start with a healthier home environment. Vinyl Shower Curtains: You know that “new” smell when you first open the package and then hang the curtain – that’s over 100 chemicals being released - off-gassing. Most of the time the amount of off-gassing exceeds the recommended guidelines for indoor air quality and some of these chemicals are even classified as hazardous air pollutants by the EPA. Most of the chemicals you should be worried about include volatile organic compounds (VOCs), phthalates and organotins. These are groups of chemicals known to have serious and adverse effects on human health. They have been linked to diseases and conditions of the respiratory system, liver, kidney, central nervous system, and even some cancers. They are found in our environment as well, making their way back into our food supply. This is because, most of these chemicals get washed or flushed down the drain, or are dispersed through the air, eventually settling into water run-off and into water treatment plants that are not designed to remove all these man-made chemicals. While the smell or at least its intensity seems to fade, some chemicals can persistently off-gas for many years. This is especially true when exposed to increased temperatures, such as with a hot shower or steam. Some of the phthalates found in these curtains area actually banned from being used in children’s toys in states like California,

Washington and countries that are part of the European Union. Does that make you wonder then how they can be safe for use in a home product that children are very likely to come in contact with, perhaps even on a daily basis? Fortunately, this is an easy and inexpensive item to replace with a product that is also easier to use. Use a cloth liner. Liners may be made from materials such as hemp, linen, cotton, or birch; effective at keeping water in the shower, can be easily washed and re-used. A cloth liner doesn’t smell, doesn’t stick to your body or the walls, and is much easier to clean. Candles:
by-product. After crude oil had been refined into gasoline, the left over sludge is further processed into paraffin. This process requires the use of solvents that also remain in the finished product. In addition, while most manufacturers in the United States have voluntarily discontinued the use of lead in their wicks, it is not required. Some continue to use lead. As the wicks burn, the lead becomes airborne and is inhaled. This report from the EPA states that exposure to lead from burning candles can be enough to cause health concerns and repeated exposure, of course, increases the risk of accumulating lead toxicity. It is well documented that even low levels of lead in the body can cause or contribute to a long list of ill health effects such as neurobehavioral issues, hypertension, kidney disease, sleep disturbance, cancer and more.
While domestic I’m sure these were a favorite of manufacturers may be trying the holiday season. They are, however, generally not healthy By Dr. Summer Beattie, ND to reduce exposure, over 1/3 of the candles sold in the to be burning in your home. United States are manufactured in China, In fact, the Environmental Protection where the same standards of quality Agency (EPA) released a 37+ page study in manufacturing are not in 2001 entitled: “Candles And Incense As Potential Sources Of Indoor Air Pollution: Market Analysis And
Literature Review”. It raises some concerns that I’ll summarize. Despite the obvious potential fire hazards that you should take precaution against – that is not what is most threatening. It’s the chemicals that they off-gas. Just a few of those chemicals include dioxins, acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, toluene, benzene and acrolein. These are linked to serious diseases of the immune system, central nervous system, endocrine system, and respiratory system. In other words, inhalation of these chemicals impact every part of how your body works. Most candles are made from paraffin wax, which is predominately a petroleum

mandated. if you are purchasing the cheapest candles possible, chances are you have a very heavily toxic laden product. So
Then there is the issue of fragrance. There is absolutely no natural way to mimic the ever growing list of scents available in candles. These are made possible by synthetic fragrances. This topic in itself is worthy a whole article. In my opinion, and I am but an echo of some of the best Environmental Medicine Physicians and researchers available – these chemicals should be banned. They are ubiquitous. It is nearly impossible to avoid synthetic fragrance. You find these chemicals in everything from the bags used to pick
up dog poop to laundry soaps (even the “natural ones made with essential oils” – labeling laws allow consumers to be easily mislead), cosmetics and home décor products. I cringed when we took the girls to a winter festival where decorating pine cones as Christmas trees was a project they wanted to do – because the smell of the cinnamon scented cones was overwhelming. They are wreaking havoc on our health and our environment. Exposure to these chemicals and lead can be especially troubling for anyone with respiratory conditions such as asthma, those with allergies, children and the elderly. But in truth they are dangerous to everyone who comes in contact with them and to our planet. There are alternatives: you can choose candles made from soy or beeswax. Make sure the wick is cotton (you will have to trim it more often) and that if it is a scented candle that only pure essential oils have been used. These candles are going to be more expensive. So my suggestion is simply to quit burning candles on a regular basis all together. Better yet, invest in a one time purchase of an essential oil diffuser and use high grade pure essential oils in it to scent your home. Quality essential oils cost more up front, but a little goes a long way, lasting you quite a while. In addition to an inviting aroma, you’ll reap some of the health benefits of breathing in these therapeutic oils. Reading through the article after I wrote it was depressing. I don’t want this article to leave you feeling hopeless but empowered. When you are aware you are free to make informed decisions – hopefully these decisions that may seem small – like switching out your shower curtain and getting rid of candles – they are just the first steps to learning more and taking action toward creating a healthier home. New Year Detox
Each
year we think about healthy resolutions and how we can better care for our bodies as we age. I thought it might be a good idea to put out some cleanse information, I’ve recently had a few people asking me about it, especially after the holidays and people are looking for ways to give their bodies a break from the rich foods of the holidays. We do a lot of work to keep our kitchens, our cars and the outside of our
bodies clean but we rarely put much thought a detox program or cleanse to help your body regarding the insides. If you are like me and are eliminate these build-up of toxins and let your working hard to feed yourself and your family body heal and rid itself. New Year, please be sure to speak with your primary care physician or local naturopath before any radical changes to diet. First steps: Is to lighten your toxic load, eliminating alcohol, coffee, nicotine, refined sugars, saturated fats, processed foods which act as toxins. Also minimizing your exposure to chemicals in the workplace and at home, such as personal health care products (lotions, shampoos, body wash and soaps, deodorants, laundry detergent, toothpaste, cosmetics) and home fragrance items and household and workplace cleaners. A few other things to toss… your microwave, dry-cleaned clothes, non-stick cooking pans, check out what your mattress and pillows are made of, rubber and plastic spatulas and other unnecessary plastics. Fasting from stressors in life, emotional or otherwise stress hormones in large quantities create toxins and slow down detoxification enzymes in the liver. Meditation, regular use of breathing exercises, chiropractic, acupuncture, massage therapy and also looking at your commute, social media habits, maybe a media fast is in order while completing a fast is a great way to reset the bodies systems. New Year Detox Continued from page 19
Juice fasting or a juice cleanse, where you only consume fruit and vegetable juices for a shortened period of time (usually 1-3 days) without solids. It is best to use fresh organic fruits and vegetables and a home juicer, hydraulic press combos are the Royals Royce of home juicers (Norwalk or Das Viking press and Champion grinders) as it is a two-step grind and press, and most home machines masticates the juice and grinds and presses in one step which leaves a lot of juice and nutrition behind. These monster presses use 4-6 tons of pressure on stainless steel to extract all the plants goodness and traditionally about double the volume of a normal one step machine! Suggested fruits and veggies are apples, carrots, beets, ginger, spinach, pears, kale, cabbage, pineapple and cranberry. Of course the most important part is using cleanly grown organic vegetables and fruits to avoid excess toxins, pesticides, herbicides. Master Cleanse also known as the lemonade diet made famous by Stanley Burroughs, consisting of a mineral rich sea salt water flush and drinking only a “lemonade” of distilled water, fresh lemon juice, cayenne pepper and maple syrup, and possibly a cup of peppermint or laxative tea at night. It has been around for a long time and probably the cleanse most of you are familiar with, it has low nutritional value and you are encouraged to drink your lemonade as soon as you feel hungry. If you like toting around large jugs of funky liquid to explain to your co-workers and taking extra naps this one’s for you. Mono Fasting is when you only consume one type of fruit for an extended period of time, although you are still eating food you are giving your digestive system a break by eating simply and avoiding food combining. Whether you pick one food for a meal, or time of day or the same food every day it’s gives your body a chance to catch up and spend more time on the body than processing complicated dishes, as a chef this would be my purgatory. Some of the benefits are it forces you to eat a higher quality of foods, since you wouldn’t pick the overripe banana if you were only eating bananas on Tuesdays, you would also know when it’s time to stop eating, you can only eat so many avocados, even though I’m sure I’ve pushed this boundary more than once, but avoiding the guacamole additives and well I eat far less. It’s the only way to know for sure how your body reacts to certain foods. With so many allergies and sensitivities out there, if you think something you are eating is too much, the only way to know is to reduce your options and find out which one is to blame. (The most common allergenic foods are Dairy, Yeast, Wheat, Gluten, Soy, Eggs, Peanuts, Tree Nuts, Shellfish,
20
W W W.
and Fish) You have a much greater appreciation for the foods that you do eat, growing up commercial fishing this is by far the best. Water Fasting is where one only consumes water for an extended period of time, this is the most powerful form of fasting, and must be under the supervision of a qualified fasting expert and medical attention, not for the faint of heart by any means. While this was the ancient philosophers’ favorites of the likes of Plato, Da Vinci and Aristotle, and has been done for thousands of years it carries serious implications compared to our modern toxic soup of life. It is recommended only if you have a serious health condition and need 110% impact and can commit to medical supervision. There are also modifications of using bone broths as well. Oxygen Colon Cleanse, this is one of the best natural detox methods, a six or seven day cleanse using distilled water, organic raw apple cider vinegar (ACV), aloe vera juice, Oxy-powder and probiotics. Basically it’s a week-long cleanse where you eat small frequent healthy meals during the day (mostly raw and fresh) and drink half your body’s weight in water ounces adding in a Tablespoon of Organic (with the mother) Apple Cider Vinegar, abstaining from coffee, dairy, alcohol, and all other beverages. Recommended Fruits are Apples, Avocados, Bananas, Blackberries, Grapefruit, Oranges, Pineapples, Raspberries, Strawberries, Tomatoes, Watermelon and White Grapes, organic raw nuts and seeds and deep rich green leafy salads. The Oxy-Powder works with your body’s stomach acid to help cleanse the colon by using oxygenating action to remove impacted waste and toxic matter. http://www.oxypowder. com/research, it is best to avoid fiber capsules (usually psyllium husk) anthraquiones and two herbal supplements Sascara sagrada and Senna, they are far too powerful for the human body and much better at creating hydrogen peroxide or making paper. Sticking to herbal teas, fennel seed, licorice root, milk thistle and dandelion are much better remedy. How do I know it’s working? What happens during a cleanse if you have spent any time in your life consuming a lot of unhealthy foods, drinks, drugs, chemicals and have a high body burden of toxins? There is a very good chance you will have a healing crisis while your body dumps such a massive load and while your body is consumed with eliminating these harmful substances that have been building it will have to work a lot harder. Your EIGHT organs (Colon, Liver, Kidneys, Lungs, Blood, Lymphatic System, Skin and Microbiome (Gut Bacteria) can go thru some pretty crazy detox effects. • Really bad breath, body odor

In most cases this is actually a sign that the fast is working and your body is hard at work, once it has cleaned house the symptoms will dissipate. Everyone’s experience is unique, some mild and some not. So please make sure you and your household are prepared for these events to occur. Take time for yourself and for your body to work its magic. The end result you will have more energy, a clearer mindset, and better sense of your body’s abilities and how to care for it.

After a cleanse or detox program it’s important to ease back gently into life, start regular foods slowly and with a food journal, keep in tune with how your body is reacting to the food you are feeding it. Don’t lose sight of it!
