New Year Goals
Happy New Year! I cannot believe another year has past. Like last year, I have several “resolutions,” 100 to be exact. I’ve started writing a list every year of 100 things I want to try and accomplish. I credit one of my writers, Courtney Wendel for this idea that she shared with us last year. Courtney splits her goals into categories and I thought I’d do the same. A quick gander at life, and these are the categories I tend to focus on and find importance in; health, happiness, financial, future, adventure, and home.
My husband and I had a friendly competition growing habanero pepper plants using different types of soil and pots. Sad to say his didn’t really take off so we jointly cared for mine, which eventually sprouted a single pepper. Adventure. There are a number of things I want to do with my toddler this year in terms of adventure. I am so excited for summer because she’ll be ready for hikes, berry picking and tide pool exploring.
First of, Health. Health for me is the foundation for everything else in life, both mentally and physically.
1. Hike a “mountain” with a toddler. I did Eaglecrest last summer with Ari in the backpack and she did fantastic. I’d like to try something similar but let her walk on the easy parts.
1. Eat well. Eating lots of fruits and vegetables is important. I am a pretty healthy eater but it doesn’t hurt to continue your goals with a reminder to stay on track.
2. Fishing with a toddler. Obviously Ari won’t be doing a lot of fishing but I’d like to take her on the boat so that someday she might love the water as much as I do.
2. Participate in the Kondike. I’ve run a half marathon distance once before, while participating in the Klondike

Road Relay Race and I think it’s time to train and do something like that again. I really enjoy the team atmosphere that the relay provides, and it makes for a fun filled trip up north. Next up, happiness. Everyday I find myself looking at life with a sparkle and wondering how I got so lucky, so I am certainly not lacking in the happiness department. A long while ago I used to paint, mostly acrylic and oil based paint on canvas. I’d love to get back into painting as it was a passion of mine as well as something I studied in college. Financial. Ugh, watch my eyes glaze over and roll with the epitome of something I find little interest in but that I acknowledge is vital all the same. Every year I contribute to my IRA, it’s very important to plan for the future and retirement so I make a point to do that every year, and this year will be no different. 2017, keep my stocks in the green, please and thank you! And then to the future. There are many things I’d like to do in the future but with an energetic toddler at home, I need to be realistic. In the next year I’d like to: Plant a garden. Last year we planted herbs in pots outside and inside.
3. Camping, either in a tent or cabin. We’ve yet to do tent camping with our toddler but think it’s something nearing our adventurous future. Last year when Ari was 6 months old, my husband and I took her to one of the Eagle Beach cabins and had a fabulous time. That’s something we’d like to do more of. Home. There are a number of improvements I’d like to do on our home but the biggest one is our backyard. It’s a pine cone infested, weedy, sand pit and we’ve got to get something going back there so Ari has more room to adventure. Those are just a few items from my 100’s list. I hope you enjoyed them and I hope you too create some goals to work at or look forward to in the New Year. Thanks again Courtney for the awesome idea! Happy January everyone! projects and e-mail. The truth is, my parents were consistent about limiting our time on screen in all forms. Lack of access to television, gaming and internet meant that my siblings, and the friends we grew up with, spent most of our free time involved in reading, and creative independent play. Often we were outside –rain, snow or shine! It’s truly shocking when I pause to recognize how much screen time has now become a constant part of our everyday lives. I would be lost without my smart phone and the instant connectivity it allows. It acts as a mobile computer and is integrated into far too many aspects of my professional and personal life to even recount. In so many ways, this instant access technology has made my life so much easier, made it possible to find information, to be aware and involved with people and events we would otherwise never engage. However, when I look at the volume of kids’ programing available at the touch of a finger on my children’s iPads, I wonder – at what costs? In 2005, Richard Louv released his book: Last Child in the Woods. It was an examination of the research showing that connection to nature is essential to the emotional and physical wellbeing of not just children but adults. This book was published two years before the first iPhone was available. Just think about that for a moment. His caution to get our children (and ourselves) more actively involved outdoors came well before the current era of digital domination had become the normal of our culture. If you are a parent, you likely have seen or heard about the New York Post article this last year on the dangers of too much screen time. It was written by licensed Psychotherapist, Dr. Nicholas Kardaras, Ph.D., LCSW-R. It created strong polar reactions from nearly everyone because he likened iPad, smartphone and video game addiction to “digital drugs” and claimed it was more difficult to treat
than heroin addiction. That screen time does affect brain development, behavior, emotional and physical health is not really debated. Disagreement comes when experts try to decide how detrimental the effects really are. Is there an amount or type of screen time that can be quantified as perfectly normal a n d
harmless for any given age? Because unlike illicit drug use, advancing technology is an expected and cultural norm. It is a tool that we learn to manage and use a p p ro p r i a t e l y. Research does in fact link overuse of electronics to mental health disorders. The question some have is: was the over exposure that caused the mental illness or if individuals already susceptible to mental illness are likely to be unable to self-regulate appropriate use of screen-time, and in turn become addicted. The American
Academy of Pediatrics discusses the very broad negative influences on health that this issue poses. Their current recommendation is for parents to actively monitor and restrict electronic entertainment devices such as television, internet access to social media. They released new specific policy and detailed recommendations and guidelines in October of 2016 to help parents establish a family media plan. These recommendations can be found at: https://www.aap.org/en-us/ advocacy-and-policy/aap-health-initiatives/pages/media-and-children.aspx With the New Year here the expectation is for us to both individually and collectively make commitments and plans for change – change for the better. Based on my own personal and medical experience, I think examining screen time in our homes is a very important topic to pay attention to. Finding ways to unplug from the iMatrix, reconnect with the people in front of us and embrace nature will only be of benefit. I encourage you to visit the AAP site to broaden your understanding of
the issue and take advantage of their resources. Create a plan for healthy approaches to screen time in your home. New Year’s resolutions can be overwhelming and often times unrealistic – resulting in failure almost before we’ve started. My own expectations for myself are no exception, so to ensure that positive change continues to happen in the face of missed goals I remind myself that everyday is the opportunity to something, no matter how small… just do not do nothing. Happy New Year! Dr. Summer Beattie,ND was born and grew up in Southeawst Alaska - it will always be home. A 2004 graduate of Bastyr University, she served two terms on the board of directors for the Washington Association of Naturopathic Physicians, and has worked in a variety of primary and specialty care settings. This has given her a broad wealth of experience that she
now uses in a

The Importance of Indoor Air
W
ell it’s winter and skiing is looking good, people are skating on the ponds, the snow machines are gassed up, and the snowshoes are dusted off. But when you’re not outdoors enjoying the snow you’re probably sitting by the fire trying to thaw out or at least dreaming about it on these short days. With the lack of daylight, you are probably indoors a bit more than you’d like to admit. With more time spent indoors, indoor air quality can be a concern. As you take steps to tighten up your home to save energy, even in the warm and mixed climates, it’s important to think about what you’re bringing into your home that might affect your air quality and your health. Young lungs, old lungs, and every lung for that mat-
ter deserve to breathe clean, healthy air. When I was younger and doing construction work I thought I was invincible and tough. I didn’t need to wear a dust mask, I thought I could handle fiberglass in a t-shirt, I was not affected by mold. Well, it didn’t take too many years to figure out that I wasn’t making smart choices. Now I can’t be in a room without being fully suited and donning a respirator when I know I’ll be exposed to mold, fiberglass, or heavy dust. Everyone has a different tolerance or threshold to certain chemicals or air hazards but even the people with the highest tolerance will eventually succumb to the affects of these toxins if the exposure is great enough. Bad indoor air quality can come from
a variety of sources including outside the home. Indoor air quality can be two to five times worse than the outdoor air. When you’re spending a solid 20 hours or more inside your homes, the indoor air quality can greatly affect your health - immediately or down the road.
form of water vapor or humidity. Our bodies like a humidity around 25% to 35% and with an elevated humidity above 60%, mold can grow and flourish which will have a significant impact on air quality. When the humidity reaches these higher levels and the vapor is leaked through the building envelope it will condense on the colder surfaces like when you get a bottle of beer out of the fridge. I have seen this happen in attics where it is actually creating a rainstorm as the vapor condenses on the underside of a roof deck. Another potential source of moisture within a house could be coming from the crawlspace. If a crawlspace is not properly sealed the moisture in vapor form could be coming from the soils below. The warm air within the house
When I go through a home, I look for all the different sources that could be causing a poor air quality. Moisture control is usually number one on the list. Look in areas on the interior where water is prevalent. Bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms all have direct sources of water. Look for leaks and wet materials in these areas that could be creating the problem. Moisture can also be a problem indirectly throughout an entire house in the

accelerates the evaporation from the crawlspace and the home acts like a chimney for the vapor and then ends up in the attic as explained above. On the exterior of the home moisture management is just as important as it is inside the home. A poor flashing detail, a leaking roof, or a building envelope that is leaking will create indoor moisture problems. Water from the roof should be run at least 5 feet away from the house and the slope and drainage around the home should slope away from the house for at least 5 feet. Caulking is not a solution to leaks in the building envelope. Flashings must be properly installed to take moisture to the exterior of the building. Caulking between different materials, such as between a vinyl window and the siding will temporarily eliminate a leak but it is merely a short-term solution. Through the season the cold and warm fluctuation
will create expansion and contraction of the different materials at a different rates causing the caulk to eventually fail. In this case, a properly installed flashing is the key to moisture man-

can greatly affect indoor air quality in a number of ways. Carbon monoxide is a huge concern with combustible appliances and fireplaces. Make sure all of these appliances are properly vented to the outdoors and have them checked regularly. Do not skimp on a carbon monoxide detector and do your research on them, a person cannot smell carbon monoxide, and cheap or poorly rated carbon monoxide detector will only notify you when it is too late. The affects of carbon monoxide are irreversible. Again, as you take steps to tighten your home to reduce the energy you use, ask yourself where the combustible air is coming from. Combustible appliances must be supplied with air for combustion. Follow all manufacturers’ guidelines for installing and maintaining these appliances to ensure that the bad air is going outside. Eternal Challenge of Space Space,
the eternal challenge. These are the struggles of a girl and her pets. Her lifelong mission: to cut the clutter, to figure out new storage ideas and to assemble new storage furniture after some glasses of wine. To hesitantly go, where Martha Stewart and many others have gone before. I have a small purse, because if I have a big purse I will inevitably fill it up. I have a small wallet because I don’t really have that many cards I need to keep with me. I was happy to buy a smaller condo, I don’t have that much stuff…. Or do I? It’s funny how when you see everything in boxes, it totally doesn’t look like that much stuff. But then when you unpack everything and each thing needs a home, suddenly it’s like the universe unfolding and what fit in such a tiny space now seems to be expanding forever, and unlike Friedmann’s equations, I hope my expansion eventually stops, if not contracts a bit. But as much as I say ‘booooo’ (but say it like that old lady in the square from Princess Bride) for having lots of stuff, I love my stuff. I really do. I have worked quite hard to be able to buy my stuff. What has survived the cull has a special use, has proven itself to be indispensable – there are no duplicates. There is also quite a seasonal shift living in a northern region. Unlike closer to the equator, what we use in winter is overkill for summer, and summer attire would leave us shivering and pathetic against the Taku winds. We also have distinct seasonal activities. Our summer days are laughing and lounging at alpine lakes in tank tops and shorts, while our fall hunting season is the quiet stalk and patient glassing on snow dusted ridge lines. So how do we manage the seasonal shift in gear and activities? Now, I’m no interior decorator, I won’t be writing any articles about how to get your life together, or anything like that. But a system that works for me, in my home, is big blue totes. And because I was feeling baller, I bought the blue totes with gray handles that lock the lid on. Especially for those of us that are in the transitory stages of our lives, it is both a curse and a blessing to have blue totes. Once you unpack them, you have to store them someplace. But you know that you will always have them. It is also easy enough to put some packing tape on them and

then every time you re-pack them, you can re-label them. I cycle through my season activities totes that I stack and store under my stairs because my condo is a split level at the front door landing. By having the activity or contents written on the side, I can easily shift my ‘fishing’ tote to the back and swap it out for my ‘hunting’ tote. Then when it finally gets cold enough, I can pull out my ‘hats, gloves, Xcountry’ tote and hope that my cross-country skis will have enough snow to glide across the glacier tracks this winter.
on my adventures. So, we have to get creative. I have found that putting a tension rod above the washer and dryer is a nice place to hang things to dry up and out of the way. I have hung hunting pack pieces on skirt hangers from the iron stair railing, next to the ceiling fan where it would get good air circulation.
But though I have figured out how best to physically store my gear, it can still be a challenge to use and care for my gear. Obviously we want our gear to stay in good working order. We want to take care of our guns so they are ready for next season, we want our hiking gear to be in good repair so it doesn’t fail us in the field. But when you come back from a day of alpine hunting, where the snain just poured in unpredictable showers as it hits and rolls over the peaks, what do you do with it when you get home? It’s one of my favorite things to take a hot shower after a cold day outside, but that doesn’t help dry out my bag, the tent, or anything else that accompanied me
took up all the open floor space in the living room. When I was packing for my three week trip to Asia, I laid everything out in the living room so I could look at it, make adjustments, pack it, un-pack it, look at it, re-pack it; I poured over blogs adjusting my packing list several times. My clothes took up the whole end of my living room, though it all fit in one carry-on and my one personal item.

I have also had my boyfriend set up his tent in the living room after his goat hunt, and he tied the guylines around random furniture then put a fan blowing directly into the tent to dry it out. It was funny to realize that his four season tent basically
How often do I need to pack two carry-on bags for almost a month on a different continent? How many times a year are we going to need to actually set up a tent to dry it out it’s so wet? How much should these things affect my criteria for buying a place? Should I be putting a bunch

of money into permanently solving some storage dilemmas, or just make something work for the next few years? Are my ghetto totes under my stairs as ghetto as I think they are? At the end of the day, if I can find my stuff and know where it is, then I’ll give myself a passing grade, with some notes for improvement. I will keep looking through Pinterest and magazines for budget friendly ideas, but I’ll wait to make any drastic changes. The most wonderful part about owning your own home, is that you don’t have to figure these things out RIGHT NOW. You can take your time, try something on for a season or two, see how it ACTUALLY works in your real life. Looking at Pinterest I am often caught up in the idealized notion of my life (but you better believe I pin those to my ‘crafty pants’ and ‘home’ boards for later), but then reality hits and I come to terms with the fact that I’m just not cool enough for some of these contemporary ideas. And that’s ok. What I want and what I’m actually willing to do/buy/build right now are different. I am slowly changing my home to the way I want it, and bless my housemates that are so understanding of the oftentimes messy transition: I can only bear to tackle so much at once. But by taking my time to gradually change things, it’s easier on my wallet and I give myself more time to consider more options and find the one that really works for me. The Importance of Indoor Air
Continued from PAGE 9
Attached garages are a source of carbon monoxide either from combustible appliances or vehicles. Do not warm your car up in your garage. The natural flow of air is from cold to warm, so cooler carbon monoxide laden air from the garage really wants to find its way into the home. To keep the bad air out it’s important to make sure that a garage connected to your home it is well ventilated and sealed completely from the home. Be sure to weather seal and install a self-closing hinge on the door between the garage and the home. Seal all penetrations between the home and the garage. Also be aware of what you are storing in your garage. Paints, pesticides, oils, chemicals, and gas fumes can find their way into a home if they are stored in a garage. Ventilate the garage with mechanical ventilation as long as it is not taking away the air from combustible appliances. As a contractor, I have to be aware of potentially hazardous materials that may be disturbed in a home when performing a renovation project. A homeowner must
also be very aware of these hazards especially if you’re going to complete renovations on your own. Asbestos containing materials are common in buildings before 1980 and were used as a fire retardant. Some materials that are known to contain asbestos are vinyl sheet and tile flooring as well as the adhesive and glue that holds these materials in place. Asbestos is very common in acoustical ceiling textures also known as popcorn texture, wall texture, mud and joint sheetrock compound. Asbestos can commonly be found in vermiculite insulation and other pipe insulations. If any of these items are to be disturbed have them tested and use a trained and qualified professional removal specialist. Another, material found and used in older homes is lead paint. Lead paint was common in homes up until 1978 when it was banned but I will test all homes for lead paint that are 1982 and older. If a painted surface is going to be disturbed such as tearing out a wall or replacing a window that is known to be older than 1978
then it must be tested. There are easy to use over the counter test kits available and if lead is found, it’s important to utilize a certified lead renovator to remove it.
ic compound) materials. Paints, cabinets, furniture, insulation, and carpets are a few items that should be researched to make sure they will not off-gas these chemicals.
Occupants of a home can also create a hazardous indoor air quality. Smoking, cleaning chemicals, furniture, and furnishings can be very hazardous to your health. The chemicals left behind by smoking are not good. As far as cleaning products, there are now a variety of options for green, natural, and non-hazardous home cleaners on the market that can work as well as the harsh cleaning products. If you can smell it, it is probably hazardous to your health or is covered up by a scent that is hazardous or unnatural, even if it smells like roses. Furniture and furnishings can be made of materials and chemicals that will off-gas into your home for many, many years creating even more hazardous indoor air quality. Formaldehydes and volatile organic compounds (voc) are commonly used to manufacture home furnishings. Look for low emission and low voc (volatile organ-
So as you tighten up your home, it’s important to be aware of indoor air quality. With the build-up of all the potentially hazardous indoor air it is no wonder it’s having an impact on health. Homes must be ventilated to exhaust, dilute, and eliminate indoor air irritants. More information can be found on the EPA website for Indoor Air Quality.

Homemade Protein Bar Project
Recipe
DIRECTIONS:
This protein bar recipe requires a little more time than the previous one because you’ll need to fire up your oven. First, preheat your oven to 325°F. Then, in a large bowl mix the oatmeal, protein powder, and dry milk. Stir to homogenize mixture. In a second bowl, mix the cream cheese, egg whites, mashed bananas, blueberries, water, and canola oil. Stir batter until well blended and add the protein mixture and stir until even. Spray a 9x9 pan with non-stick cooking spray and evenly spread the batter into the ban. Distribute evenly and bake for 30 to 35 minutes. If you want a little more flavor, you could also spread some peanut butter on the bars after they’ve cooked. Allow to cool for about 10 minutes and cut into bars. Enjoy!

High Protein Fudge Bars INGREDIENTS: My daughters love protein bars, it’s one of the few things healthy that they will routinely try, eat, and not complain about. As we survive the holidays and look towards health and wellbeing we want to make sure we are getting plenty of protein, and not of the animal variety. Eating smaller portions, more frequently is key to good digestion, and if you are hitting the gym or slopes it’s great to have a power packed snack in your pocket or pack when you need it. Any of the ingredients used in these protein bar recipes can be bought in bulk and used to make a large number of protein bars. So, next time you’re looking for a protein packed snack to provide your body the fuel it needs to build and repair muscle, opt for one of these homemade protein bars over buying sugar-filled commercial bars that often cost 2 to 3 dollars for a single bar. Your body and your wallet will be glad you did. Make sure you buy quality organic ingredients, avoid corn and soy products and byproducts, if you are buying any protein powder please double check all ingredients, I’ve seen some horrific stimulants and enzyme overloads that will never be ab-
sorbed or well taken by the body, make sure your sources are reputable, I always call and email if the label does not have the information I seek and they are pretty prompt in reply. Also these recipes my kids can make themselves without too much mess… I keep the honey to a mom only ingredient… enough pooh bears already. Also the no bake and raw bars should be wrapped and refrigerated for a few days to a week max. Or double wrapped and frozen for no more than two months. From my slope to yours happy tailgates and turns in 2017!
gredients together in a large bowl. Then line a pan with wax paper or spray with non-stick cooking spray and press the mixture into the pan. Smooth the mixture to remove areas that are uneven to ensure bars are evenly proportioned. Next, simply place the pan and ingredients into the fridge for 30 to 45 minutes. Remove and cut into bars of desired size. Enjoy!
