Happy New Year!
I
say Happy New Year, because it similar every day since Christmas and it is thrilling that we are smarts! Oh, and it’s time to take in a new year, full of all those lights and decorations possibilities. Unfortunately down that we so joyfully put up I find myself a little gloomy and nailed or stapled onto the during this theoretically house. Yes, grumble grumble… exciting time. The excitements So, during this time of year I try of the holidays are over yet to focus on positive thoughts, winter and darkness are still make resourceful resolutions here as we grimace at our and get excited about the future credit card bills and bank year ahead. If all else fails to By Anna Hoke accounts. The house is likely brighten my day, I just think of a disaster zone with wrapping paper and all the winter activities I can still partake presents scattered about, and leftovers in and then imagine that Spring is right overflowing the fridge and making their around the corner, after I get my fill of way to the back deck for “refrigeration.” If cross country skiing, however long or far you have kids, you’ve probably stepped on that might actually be. After all, there are a Lego or a misplaced screw, or something an array of outdoor sports and activities
Letter from the Publisher that can make the short winter days go by even faster. A few times a year I like to ice skate or even walk around on the ice at the glacier starting at the Skater’s Cabin location. This provides brisk exercise with distractions such as the incredible views of the glacier, but be very careful when getting on the ice as there can be rockslides and glacial caving that can break the ice or leave it weak in places. As I mentioned earlier, cross-country skiing is an activity that I do all winter and also in the spring. I usually bring a small pack with some food and hot tea and have a winter picnic. There are many great locations to ski in Juneau and in Southeast and the same goes for snowshoeing! Sledding is another activity that is fun for the whole
family, unless of course you have a little too much excitement and end up with bumps and bruises or find yourself in a creek. There are some great sledding hills and communities here in Southeast, it gets the heart pumping and can lead to some great photo finishes and can end with a cup of hot cocoa. Winter will end, so why not try to enjoy what’s left of it. Pull on those xtra tuffs, skis, skates, or shoes, don a hat and mittens, and go for it! • Anna Hoke is the graphic designer and owner of Southeast Living Magazine. Bauer/Clifton Interiors is an interior design firm located in Juneau, Alaska. Jeremy Bauer and Jason Clifton, the principals of Bauer/Clifton Interiors, are designers that share a passion for creating stylish, organic, and contemporary spaces.
BEFORE & AFTER Master suites are developing more and more from what used to be the largest bedroom in the house with an attached bathroom, to a place a homeowner can now retreat to from the outside world. There has certainly been an increasing trend of designing personal retreats with very custom details that are considered the bonuses of life’s hard work. In this particular home, the master suite now incorporates His & Her bathrooms with the addition of this new bathroom that was added onto the existing home. With beautiful mountain and ocean vistas seen above the tree tops, it was no surprise to hear of the views being the client’s primary focus.
The first challenge was achieving a layout that accommodated the client’s list of wants and needs for this small space. A deep soaking tub was at the top of the list, followed by a separate walk-in shower, and maximizing counter space and storage. Of course, no bathroom is complete without fine material selections that provide a desired level of opulence for one’s personal retreat. Fortunately, these items fell into place once the client gave us her inspiration of a robin’s egg to serve as the jump off point for this design. It was not only an obvious direction for color, but the soft shape and gentle nature of the egg gave us hints of design elements to incorporate
into this room as well. After experimenting with several layouts, we settled on an open floor plan that allowed the tub to be out in the open and near the large windows. To continue this concept and to avoid an enclosed shower, we simply used a single glass panel to divide the toilet area from the
shower and then tiled the walls from floor to ceiling within this same zone. With the tub abutted next to the open shower, a Carrera marble top and tile

facade achieve the necessary waterproof surface while marble window sills transition into a chair rail that caps off the tile wainscoting. With these zones in place; we then designed a custom, built-in vanity and dressing counter to fit the last corner. The Black Walnut cabinetry compliments the softer tones of the marble and wall color, while the large drawers provide great organization and maintain everyday items within reach but out of sight! The same Carrera marble was used for the countertops and the upper vanity countertop completes the chair rail
that encircles this room. The crowning piece, the Victoria & Albert tub, is very unique in how it is made from a resin that incorporates volcanic ash for additional heat retention. The depth of this tub provides a great bathing experience and the curvilinear form mimics the shape of a robin’s egg. This softer, more feminine shape influenced the design of the tub deck & tile surround and achieves better circulation within the space. The curve also offsets the linear patterns of the Carrera tile; found in
varying sizes ranging from 6x12 wall tile to the 1x1 mosaic of the surround. Varying tile finishes play with reflection and provide slip resistance for the 3x12 floor tile too!
Lastly, the wall color was derived from the main inspiration and resembles a Robin’s egg nestled within the trees located just outside of this on-of-akind space.
The gentle warmth and glitzy finish of Polished Nickel became the go-to finish for the faucetry and hardware. The sconces and crystal pendants incorporate this same metallic finish to complete this design and also relate to the adjoining master bedroom.

NEW YEAR, NEW PROJECT?

inter’s icy claws have set in, the days are short, and the holidays have come and gone. What’s in store for 2014? Could it be to run your first marathon, take a trip to Europe, or how about taking on a home project? Projects, like marathons and trips to Europe, have their costs. Having a good plan usually costs nothing but a little time. A good plan is essential to running a successful marathon, enjoying a trip to Europe or tackling a home construction project. House plans and engineering, however, actually do cost something, but what I’m talking about is a strategic plan to tackle a home project, addition, or new construction project. In Southeast Alaska, where the cost of living and the cost of getting things done can and are usually a little higher due to a lot of different variables, including weather, transportation costs, and labor shortages. If you don’t have a plan to tackle a project, projects can linger on
longer than you’d hoped for, as costs escalate. There is no need to fly by the seat of you pants by reacting, and not planning. Added work, upgrading materials and last minute changes can all drive the cost of a project through

Once defined with set goals it is time to determine the scope of the project. I have found this is the point where contractors should be researched and involved. Let the contractor know what the projects goals are. At this point a good contractor will let you know if the By Greg Stopher project goals are Stopher Construction possible and the other variables that may be involved. Let’s say an example of a project goal is to update a bathroom. Your goals may need to be revised when a contractor says you can’t move plumbing from here to there without substantial cost or it may not be possible at all.

A contractor will also be able to work with a designer or architect to come up with a plan to obtain the goals and describe a scope for the project. As a contractor, I am usually involved after the design is completed. In some cases, where I am involved after the plans are finalized, I see places where money could be saved or alternative construction methods could be used to save time and money. There may need to be some contingencies built into the scope, some “what if ’s.” What if we open up that wall and the electrical isn’t up to code? Well, as a contractor and for the safety of a client, we have to bring the electrical up to code. What happens to the out of order items? The scope of the project includes the fine details including the tasks that need to be accomplished, the decisions to accomplish those tasks, the materials to complete the project, and any contingencies that need to be acknowledged.

NEW YEAR, NEW PROJECT? Specifications also fall within the scope of the project. For a roofing project this would include specifying the preference that the owner would like “Malarkey 50 year architectural shingle in a Weathered Wood color.” With specific and well-defined specifications like this, a contractor can easily determine the cost of that material. A countertop specified as granite is not very well-defined to a contractor, because granite prices without installation can range from $10 per square foot to 12 times that, so some materials specifications will need to be spelled out in greater detail. Also, be familiar with the products wanted before it gets to the point that a material is needed. Builders and remodelers will help with this but when it is time to install a bathroom vanity but the vanity has not been selected yet it will cost
more to put in if the contractor has to return to install. A contractor should specify when the decision for the vanity should be made so it arrives in time for installation. Plumbers can be delayed and costs can escalate if a bathtub is needed in eight weeks but is takes a homeowner six weeks to select a tub.
a house that no one usually sees but is necessary to make the house solid, comfortable, and durable. There will be a price for this that is the baseline price to accomplish these tasks right. Good builders and remodelers will not take shortcuts on the guts of a project to find money for upgrades later in the project.
Having a budget will determine what can be accomplished and put some constraints on a project. The bottom line is that some compromises will need to be made if the budget doesn’t allow for that choice. Let me describe this with the view of a contractor or professional. A baseline of tasks needs to be accomplished, let’s say, for an addition on a home. Good builders and remodelers will start with a solid foundation, drainage, and solid practices for weatherization, insulation, or the real guts of
There are a lot of questions your contractor will have answers on the “how to” and “why” but will need help from the homeowner with the “what” and “goals.” Let the contractor help with the initial planning phase and work with the designer or architect. It can save money in the design, as well as, the construction phase. Plan for the project and its contingencies and any surprises that come up during the project will be handled efficiently and save everyone time and money.

Season 3: JUNEAU ROLLERGIRLS Article by: Kaili Woyote (Kaili Jackson)
The Juneau Rollergirls have officially kicked off Season 3 with an intra-league mashup in November. This bout featured two teams of evenly distributed Juneau skaters, the Slay Belles and the Rain Dears, in a holiday themed bout; Season’s Beatings. Home games give more skaters an opportunity to gain bout experience. Since there are two rosters, up to 14 skaters each, newer skaters are more likely to bout for their first time during an intra-league bout. Fans can expect to see things ramp up in the spring, as the league already has plans in place to host both the Fairbanks All-Stars and Orange Crush from Rage City, as well as plans to compete in the second ever All Alaska Roller Derby Tournament. The Juneau travel team has yet to be matched up against the Fairbanks All-Stars; how-
ever they have won bouts against the Fairbanks travel team, Roller Borealis, and Fairbanks home teams, Gold Diggers and Raven Rebels, during the Season 2 competition. Juneau beat Orange Crush last April in Anchorage and then lost to them during the All Alaska Tournament in May. Spectators can expect both of these to be intense, redemption bouts. League members consider themselves lucky to live in such a supportive community. As an all-volunteer organization, volunteers who have built the league from a small group of novice skaters to today’s competitive league with tournament title aspirations, every contribution helps. Sponsor donations go to assist the league’s operations and day to day needs while fundraising supplements league activities. Fundraising Committee member Just Mom (Laura Sanbei), says, “With Juneau’s

Facilities Committee Head, Southeast Manhandler (Alex McGuan) says, “We are always looking for new places to skate. Finding a consistent practice area has been challenging. If people have a place for us to practice, they can contact me at facilities@juneaurollergirls. com.” “One of the things that makes derby
great is that there is a place for everybody. Whether you have played team sports your whole life or not, whether you love fishnets and flair or not, whether you want to skate, ref, coach, announce or officiate off-skates, there is room for you in derby” – Kaili Woyote (Kaili Jackson). People interested in becoming a Juneau Rollergirl but have never strapped on a pair of skates may consider signing up for the community schools Introduction to Skating class lead by the Juneau Rollergirls. This class is held twice a year for people that are derby bound or are simply trying to find a fun new way to be active; the class is open to both men and women. CROWBERRY: A HEALING BERRY OF ALASKA The abundance of Alaskan plant life continues to amaze me even into the winter months when most is covered by snow or appears to have gone dormant. Like we mentioned last month, the winter season brings with it the joys and sorrows of the holidays as well as the obvious trials of more challenging weather that affects our homes and our bodies. Intuition prods us to believe that what we bring into our home and put into our body – lifestyle choices - profoundly influence health and happiness. Movement in medical research toward the area of lifestyle keeps proving our intuition true…
freezer if you pick it early in the season to encourage flavor development. Cooking also intensifies the palatability, as does mixing them with other types of berries. This berry, commonly known as crowberry, partly because of its shiny and intensely dark color, has a long history of medicinal use in First Nation populations. All parts of the
plant, roots, stems and berries are used for different ailments; from colds/flu to gastrointestinal, kidney and eye concerns (snowblindness). This plant has also been shown in studies to have a very high quercetin content. Working best in synergy, quercetin is a powerful anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory flavonoid compound offering
A proliferative and often overlooked berry of Alaska, Empetrum nigrum (xéel’I in Tlingit), is a wonderful species of berry that is best harvested after the first frost, and continues to be available below the snow throughout much of winter. In fact, the notoriously bland berry sweetens with cold; store in a
numerous health benefits. Most promising modern research for its use have been in not only treating but preventing heart disease, cancer, prostate issues, chronic degenerative conditions and autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. Berries of Empetrum nigrum can be used to make backed goods, such a muffins, pies, pancakes or in mixtures of syrups, jams and jellies. Far northern Alaskan peoples blend them with fish organs and seal oil. A traditional tea of the twigs and stems is a popular and easy use of the woody parts of the plant. Simply steep in a pot of water on the wood stove and drink throughout the winter. Roots can be added to the decoction as well. More recently Crowberry wine and beer brews are becoming more popular. While there are no known cautions with ingestion of Crowberry, it is wise to seek the council of a trained herbalist or licensed Na-

So now that the Holidays have passed and we’re all making new resolutions and diet/exercise promises to be healthier and thrive better in the Contributed new year. Many of by Amber King these resolutions involve food. So I’d love to share with you my resolution this year. To stop consuming nightshade vegetables… what are they and why do you want to stop? Nightshade vegetables are a plant family called Solanaceae. They all have certain characteristics in common (flower shape, seed arrangement etc…) Many are inedible and several are highly poisonous like deadly nightshade, tobacco and jimsonweed. Many edible nightshades are in our (and my) diet. Bell Peppers, hot peppers, tomatoes, okra, artichokes, soy sauce (usually made with GMO soy beans and cut with petunia, eggplant, goji berries, paprika, pimentos, pepinos (hot peppers), potatoes (not sweet potatoes), tomatillos, gooseberries, naranjilla,

vodka (again the potatoes, I guess I’ll be drinking Ciroc with Puffy P Diddy…) The problem is the glycoalkaloid/ saponin, lectin and capsaicin content. Overconsumption of these edible species can be poisonous to humans and at some levels, toxic properties can cause and inflame health issues if consumed regularly over time. Not to mention Oxalic Kidney stones. Lectins are present in most foods, but have the ability to increase intestinal permeability and have hi proline content and are relatively heat stable so cooking will not break them down and will cause leaky gut. Not what I’m looking for in the new year and on the same level it’s the same with saponin, which can also stimulate and exaggerate an immune response. Since I have auto immune issues I need to avoid these too. Glycoakaloid poisoning can occur with excessive consumption of nightshade vegetables and inhibit a key enzyme, acetyl cholinesterase, which is required for nerve impulse conduction. Think of a flickering light bulb, but that of the nervous system.. not good. The Capsaicin is a steroidal stimulant

found in hot peppers, it’s what makes them hot. It is a natural irritant to a variety of tissues including skin, eyes and mucous membranes and can also increase intestinally inflammation. So while it’s going to be incredibly difficult to give up my love of everything hot sauced based, curry’s and many favorite Italian dishes, no more eggplant terrines, artichoke dip or my favorite pizza… Will life be a bland remainder of what it once was without my arsenal of peppery sauces and condiments (I really mean half the fridge door is hot sauces!) But if it means I’ll feel better at the end then it’s totally worth it. No more arthritis, or chronic pain. If you have constant pain, dietary issues or auto immune responses you might consider a three month challenge to avoid nightshades and see if it makes a difference… I’d also avoid GMO foods also since again it’s all about promoting good protein absorption and happy gut flora and fauna (see added sauerkraut) Amber King can be emailed at accereek@ gmail.com
Preheat oven to 325. Heat olive oil in Dutch Oven on medium heat. Sprinkle 1 tsp. salt equally over cut-up chicken pieces. Place rice flour in bowl and lightly dust the chicken pieces until coated. Brown chicken about 8 minutes per side. Don’t over crowd – do this in two batches, or heat up another skillet and brown concurrently. Remove chicken to plate and add mushrooms and garlic cloves. Stir and sauté 5 minutes. Add sherry. With a wooden spoon, scrape up the brown bits from the bottom of the pan and cook for 1 minute. Add minced garlic and stir 1 minute. Add wine, chicken stock, salt and pepper and stir. Add chicken back into pot. Cover and place in oven for 30–35 minutes. Place pot on stove when chicken is cooked through and discard thyme. Remove chicken to a plate while you thicken sauce. Mash rice flour and butter with the back of a spoon to create a roux. Turn pot onto a low simmer and gradually stir in the roux to thicken the sauce, about 5 minutes. Or substitute the roux with the arrowroot/broth mixture to thicken. Add chicken back to pot and leave covered to keep warm. This was adapted from an Ina Garten recipe. From My Hot Sauce Free Table to yours, Happy New Year!
