Happy New Year! go by even faster. As the weather has been super mild it’s still nice enough to go on walks and hikes. My favorites are the Wetland Trails and Eagle Beach. And if we ever get “wintry” weather this year, I like to ice skate or even walk around on the ice at the glacier starting at the Skater’s Cabin location. This provides brisk exercise with distractions such as the incredible views of the glacier, but be very careful when getting on the ice as there can be rock slides and glacial caving that can break the ice or leave it weak in places. As I mentioned earlier, cross-country skiing is an activity that I do all winter and also in the spring. I usually bring a

small pack with some food and hot tea and have a winter picnic. Once we have snow, there are many great locations to ski in Juneau and in Southeast and the same goes for snowshoeing! Sledding is another activity that is fun for the whole family, unless of course you have a little too much excitement and end up with bumps and bruises or find yourself in a creek. There are some great sledding hills and communities here in Southeast. It gets the heart pumping and can lead to some great photo finishes and can end with a cup of hot cocoa. Winter will end, so why not try to enjoy what’s left of it. Pull on those hiking shoes, xtra tuffs, skis, skates, or shoes, dawn a hat, mittens, and go for it! TIPS FOR DECLUTTERING AND ORGANIZING YOUR HOME O

ne of the most popular New Year’s resolutions is home de-cluttering and organization. An organized home reduces stress, saves time and frees up valuable space.

good, clean condition and used at least once per week.

The key to success is to focus on one room at a time. Begin the de-cluttering process by sorting items into four piles or categories:

DONATE/SELL: Gently used items that are rarely utilized and have no sentimental value. If you donate an item valued at over $50, ask for a receipt from the donation center so that you can deduct the contribution on your tax form.

KEEP: Items that get used on a regular basis. They should be in

TRASH/RECYCLE: Items that are no longer usable due to wear or

damage. STORAGE: Items that hold sentimental value and special memories, but don’t get used on a regular basis.

DISPLAY: Items that have visual appeal. Large items can sit atop tables, counter tops, bookcases or open shelving. Small objects can be corralled in pretty trays, decorative b o w l s and glass canisters.

Now that you’ve de-cluttered the room, shift your focus to organization. You must decide if you wish to hide or display the items you have decided to keep in the room. Begin the organization process by sorting these items into two piles or categories: HIDE: Useful, but not beautiful, items. Storage ottomans and furniture with drawers and cabinets are convenient places to stash items. You can also use baskets, bins and decorative boxes in a variety of colors and materials to help conceal objects. Pick a color palette and use

it throughout the room to create a sense of cohesion and order. Label bins with attractive stickers or tags tied with ribbon so that items can be easily found and returned to the proper container.

We’ve all heard that old adage, “a place for everything and everything in its place”. This time-tested idea holds true. De-cluttering and organization increases your ability to accomplish more and enjoy life to its fullest. Randi Wilson is a Certified Interior Decorator and owner of Wilson Interiors, LLC. USING TECHNOLOGY TO PLAN YOUR HOME

hen I meet with a client, they often state that they’re not sure what they want for finishes, styles or colors. Some clients downplay their ability to know their style, but I say your style is your own and only you know what you like. On Houzz it’s much the same but you can only save projects from within Houzz, but believe me there are enough projects within Houzz to give you and your builder an idea of what you want. When you pin or add to a Houzz Board you can comment on what you like in the photo. If you pin to your “Dream Kitchen” board, you can say “sink” or “backsplash” or whatever it is you are drawn to in a space. It works really well for us to not have to

meet face-to-face to discuss each concept and keeps the project moving forward despite busy schedules on both sides. For a house I recently built in downtown Juneau, the client had two small children and lived on Star Hill. Let’s just say meeting times were varied and it was difficult to haul samples to their home on too regular a basis, let alone find the time to meet too regularly with nap schedules and work schedules as she also worked from home. But we made it work using Pinterest and Houzz for concepts and ideas before we looked at final samples in person, it helped us to have a better idea of what to expect from each other and decisions were made much easier. Many of the

finishes for the entire home were selected this way. It was also good to see the home come together on Pinterest. From lighting to tile, to house numbers to mirrors and everything in between, Pinterest was a helpful tool to get the house completed in a way that

incorporated our homeowner’s sense of style while also being functional for their busy family. I’ve been working on a bathroom with a client and she works nights so meeting in person has been a challenge.

Magnificently Maintained

Offered by Cheryl Holloway: There are no attached homes that compare to this well maintained home. You would think that it was a single family home if Cheryl Holloway you see from street. Very private, corner lot, Sales Associate great garden area, huge green house, large (907) 209-6602 two car garage, vaulted ceilings and sunny cheryljh@gci.net location are only a few of the amenities in this great home. Sparkly clean and ready for its new owner. Engineer inspection will be done soon. Attached at garage only. Three sources of heat: monitor , electric baseboard and pellet stove. MLS#13895 $375,000

She told me, “I don’t know what I want, I’m not good at designing things.” I hear this a lot so I guided the conversation to determine what works and what doesn’t work in the bathroom, we made some decisions based on these needs and moved onto style. I told her I’d send her a link to a board on Pinterest. And it turns out she knew EXACTLY what she wanted. When we met again, I had removed all of the photos she hadn’t “liked” on the page and her bathroom design came alive. She wanted something blue and calm and beautiful and a little bit glamorous, she just didn’t know it until she saw it.

Honest, Professional Service . . . Building dreams one home at a time!

Using Technology to Plan Your Home Projects I’ve only recently started using Houzz for clients and I’ll have more feedback after a current project I’m working on is complete, but so far there are so many amazing and beautiful projects on there, that it seems to me like it’s going to be as good as Pinterest if not better. Houzz offers connections to builders and suppliers and tries to build a sense of community so I see it developing into something more for my clients in the future but I’m not letting go of Pinterest just yet. Some people can make decisions when surrounded by a sea of tile and from little samples but let’s be honest, it is overwhelming for most of us. But seeing real photos of a kitchen that makes us feel comfortable and fits in our life from colors to finishes to functionality can help us determine our “sense of style,” which many of us forgot we had. In our hearts, we know what we like and as a builder I can walk in your home and see that there is a sense of cohesiveness. Some people like patterns a lot, some people prefer simple clean

lines and that’s where I’ll start with sending you ideas and inspiration for creating your new space. If I know that the home is new (to you), I can still see a sense of style from the items you’ve brought into the space. We should give ourselves more credit about our sense of style and taste and using Houzz and Pinterest makes all of that much easier. I’m looking forward to attending the National Association of Home Builders Show in Las Vegas this month to share more tools and technology with you. Greg Stopher has over 16 years of experience in the construction field and earned a degree in Construction Technologies from the University of Alaska – Southeast. His company, Stopher Construction, LLC, is a general contracting company specializing in remodeling, custom finishes, additions and new home construction projects. He can be reached at 907-321-2350.

“ A child’s brain is like a house that’s under construction.” A

s usual, New Year gets us all thinking about how we want to do and be better…. AGAIN! At least the “again” part is true for me. I’ve always believed- or at least hoped- that when people know better, they do better. Self included.Yet I still struggle to really be that much better each year at those lofty goals that are important enough to keep reaching for year after new year, after new year. A friend recommended a book by author David McRaney, called You Are Now Less Dumb. I haven’t read it (yet) but his premise is that we cling to our beliefs and biases even when presented with overwhelming evidence against them. When I read the cliff notes on this book, I knew it applied to me. It applies in my work life and for sure in my personal life…. So be prepared, I’ll likely review this book next month! The idea of it fits with the idea of change and prompted me to again think about how have I been changing over the last year in the area of my life that is the absolutely most important - that of a parent. Not as well as I would hope, which is why I need to read the above book. It’s nearly impossible to hold onto a belief or bias and expect our actions to change.

mentally, emotionally. The intention was that if I understood this phenomenon better, I could change the way I interact with my children in order to support optimal growth and development of their whole selves. It shouldn’t be so astounding. It should be common sense. Yet, the more I learn, the more amazed I am to see how all of the pieces weave together to determine thought and action, behavior and belief. Character is created and personality solidified. Each part (physical, mental, emotional) depends on the progress in one area to lay the foundation for growth in another. Author, Daniel Siegel, M.D. says “ A child’s brain is like a house that’s under

For example why not just start with one of the most controversial topics I come across: training an Infant to self soothe to sleep. This tactic goes by lots of names and modifications of the basic “cry it out” method, but it’s basically all the same. A baby is left alone to cry until they at some point learn that when you put them in bed they are to just be quiet - no one is going to come get them. Any parent will tell you, no matter how attached you are to your new bundle of pure miracle, at some point exhaustion rules and all you want is for that baby to just lay down and go to sleep.

Having a new baby and entering a new phase of parenting with our 5 year old was certainly a catalyst to focus my studies and reading this past year on improving my knowledge base about how children develop physically,

Thru photosynthesis spirulina converts sunlight into pure protein, fatty acids, carbohydrates and nearly every other essential nutrient in life. Its name comes from the Latin word “spiral” because of its shape. “ A child’s brain is like a house that’s under construction.” You do not have to be an expert in neurodevelopment or understand the details of how the brain stem with the cerebellum, the limbic system and the neocortex work to see why a basic understanding of their function and development fit into the argument against self-soothing sleep training. Here are the cliff notes: • Brain stem and cerebellum are responsible for auto-pilot survival and are the most developed at birth, continuing to develop most quickly over the next 12-18 months. • Limbic system is responsible for emotions, habits, memories and decisions; it primarily develops over about a 3 year span. • Neocortex is the most complex part of the brain and is responsible for consciousness, reason, imagination, language and much more. It is the last to really develop

and continues to do so well into early adulthood. The limbic and neocortex parts of the brain obviously stand out as being necessary for emotional self regulation. Understanding that these are not developed, even into young toddler years, then it becomes reasonable to expect that babies and toddlers are not truly even capable of self-soothing. Or are they? After all we all know parents who swear “cry it out” worked for them. Maybe you are a parent who used that method and it worked for you. The interesting thing about an underdeveloped brain is that the basic survival functions kick in and babies who can not rely on “fight or flight” instead“freeze”. Salivary tests for the stress hormone, cortisol, have been shown in at least one published study on infant self-soothing to be significantly elevated despite the

infant being quiet. This means baby is stressed not soothed. (See the PubMed article: Early Hum Dev. 2012 Apr;88(4):227-32. doi: 10.1016/j.earlhumdev.2011.08.010. Epub 2011 Sep 23.) A lay article that goes into much more detail while being and easy read is: “Self Settling-What Really Happens When You Teach a Baby to Self Soothe to Sleep” by Sarah Ockwell-Smith Understanding that my infant and toddler are not capable of consistent complex rational regulation of emotion means I have to adapt my expectations and techniques in order to meet them at a place they are actually developmentally capable of complying with. Does that mean if you used sleep training and cry it out methods you are a terrible parent and should

be ashamed and laden with guilt. I’m not saying that at all… Please, don’t misunderstand me. I know most parents are doing their very, very best with their children. This was just one example of how when we know better, we can do better. So if you are building a new home or taking on a remodel project, maybe ask a contractor or architect or even experienced DIYer - do they know a better way?
