This Is Why You Need A Realtor

Unless you have bought or sold real estate before, or unless you work in the industry, you need a Realtor and here’s why:

1.

Not everybody who sells property can call themselves a Realtor. Most people don’t know this, and it is an important detail. A person has to go through a lot to actually become a Realtor. Realtors have to be licensed and in order to get licensed they have to

take a battery of tests. In addition, once they get their licenses, they must take continuing education classes in order to keep them. Getting tested, paying for classes, and paying membership fees is expensive business. In their first six months a Realtor might not get a paycheck while they’re busy closing their first deals. Think about that.

A good Real Estate professional is going to stay with you through every step of the process, from staging your house to the signing of your papers and handing over your keys.

The business of buying and selling property is a Realtors’ job. That is to say, they do this every day for a living. The many steps that a person takes to buy or sell property is staggering and is usually accompanied by a mountain of paperwork--all of which a Realtor has seen and been through before. Realtors have access to the biggest buying and selling pool. This might be one of the biggest reasons of all to seek the assistance of a Realtor, simply because they have access to the most buyers and sellers on the market at any given time. Real Estate agencies, along with the

4.

Realtors have access to the most current listings available. If you’re in the market this is important. For instance, if you’re a buyer, a new property that is perfect for you might come across your Realtor’s desk and, before the public even has access to it, you might get to see it first. Or, if you’re selling property, your Realtor might already know someone who’s looking for that exact prop-

Things take longer when it’s raining at that temperature. My fingers don’t work very well in gloves let along soaking wet gloves. I try to schedule these meetings around lunchtime so that not much of my time is away from the project during the work day. If I am onsite, lunchtime occurs and we usually all bring our lunch and eat on site. The day usually flashes by and we start rolling up the day around 4:45pm. The last 15 minutes of the day I utilize to get a list for tomorrow while the crew cleans up. I am home a little after 5pm, which is one of the great things about living in Juneau, I am never more than 15 minutes from the project site. I get home and put on my running clothes

As the kids are settling down, I hit the office to order materials for the next project, work on paperwork, start writing up estimates, and more paperwork. This usually ends around 10:00pm in which I head off to bed and rest up for another day in the life of a builder.

The art of decorating walls [ part one ] A

rt completes a room. Aside from filling blank walls, it enhances the color scheme, the mood and the symmetry of room. Art is also a great way to express your personal interests and style. Art is anything that can be hung on a wall. The possibilities are endless and affordable with a little imagination. Frame scrapbook paper, wallpaper samples and fabric remnants for quick and easy pops of color and pattern. To create a cohesive display, always stick with one

frame color. I also recommend using white mats for a clean, professional look. Color mats can detract from the vibrancy of the framed object. A kitchen or dining room is a great place to display a collection of china, ceramic plates, chargers or silver trays. Use a variety of sizes and shapes to keep things interesting. As long as the items share a common or complimentary color palette, you can mix and match as many different pieces as you like. For travel buffs, a fun way document

your adventures is to frame maps of the places you’ve been or would like to visit. Travel memorabilia like tickets, passes and brochures can also be framed and afford a great way to enjoy and remember your By Randi Wilson, C.I.D. experiences. Interior Decorator Are you a musician or music lover? C o n s i d e r hanging albums or jacket covers on the wall. You can also frame concert tickets or sheet music from song books. Do you have a collection of mismatched frames in different sizes, shapes and colors? Pick a color you like, and in a matter of minutes, you can spray paint your way to a cohesive collection. No glass or subject needed! This is an especially good project if you have frames with unusual shapes or intricate carved designs. The frame becomes the star and can be appreciated for its natural beauty. Everyone has student portraits and

family photos on display in their home. These can be used to create a heritage wall unique to your family. Intersperse the photos with framed maps from the countries where your family originated. You can also frame a family tree or family crest. Get the kids involved too. Purchase non-toxic paint and blank canvases from a craft store. Have each child make hand and/or foot prints on their canvas. These sentimental keepsakes will be enjoyed for years to come. Whether you’re looking for a way to share a hobby, express your creativity or display a collection, there are a variety of easy, affordable ideas to artfully decorate the walls of your home.

Q. I want to invest in real estate, but how do I know it is a good investment?

she was younger, was fiddlehead ferns. These are perhaps one of the most easily identifiable by people new to wild harvest of plants. Some recommend always cooking them first in order to prevent Vitamin B depletion that can be caused by an enzyme found in the plant. We have enjoyed them raw, however I would recommend moderation and caution. She also easily identified twisted stalk, or wild cucumber/watermelon berry, a favorite from my own childhood. While we didn’t see it on this walk as it’s still too early in the season, she is also familiar with sulfur shelf or the fungi called chicken of the woods. We harvested quite a bit last year, blanched and froze it for use throughout the year. Later that night her Dad joined us for a walk along the water toward Auke Bay and he pointed out goose tongue, a beach variety of plant great fresh or stir-fried or blanched and frozen for later use. We’ve talked about gardening at home and community gardens, but there is also such a rich source of edible plants here in the wild surrounding us. Luckily there are many skilled foragers from which to learn as well as books and online sources. After all, proper identification and preparation of wild foods is extremely important in order to avoid poisonous and harmful ingestion of the wrong plants. Taking a class or learning from an expert is also a valuable way to learn

about and understand sustainable harvest of these local wild foods from our natural resources. One of my favorite books can be difficult to find, but worth the effort - Discovering Wild Plants: Alaska, Western Canada, The Northwest by Janice schofield. Another group doing amazing things to promote healthy sustainable harvest of traditional foods is Store Outside Your Door (www.storeoutside.com). I first became aware of them through a colleague, Dr. Gary Ferguson, ND, the Director of Wellness and Prevention at the Alaska Native Health Consortium. I am so thankful that Jaya is beginning to learn some of this in her botany classes at JMS from a teacher who cares to share her knowledge of the plants they meet on their walks. My visit with my five year old on that sunny morning has certainly inspired me to be more committed to using the edible wild available to us here in Southeast Alaska and not limit ourselves to the well known staples of meats and berries. Dr. Summer Beattie, ND is a graduate of Bastyr University. She has over 8 years experience as a Naturopathic Doctor specializing in women’s health with an emphasis on environmental medicine. Having served two terms on the board of directors for the Washington Association of Naturopathic Physicians, she has also worked in the medical aesthetics field since 2008. You can reach her at onehealingcenter@gmail.com or 907-209-4611.

needed. When it starts to develop a liquid called “hooch” which is a form of alcohol on it, just pour it off and stir the dough. When you go to use the finished liquid dough it is called a “sponge.” Pour what you need into a bowl (2 cups). Add warm water and flour and cover with a towel. When the sponge has set for a couple hours proofing (fermenting) and bubbly and has a light froth, and smells sour it is ready to use.

hile the days are long and the rhubarb is springing forth in copious bundles, my mind wanders to Alaskan Sourdough, after many summers spent commercial fishing throughout Alaskan waters I always had a good sourdough going. Rumor has it that I delivered some amazing tartar sauce to fishermen in need in Togiak during a herring season, but in Togiak one could never remember what ingredients one might have to make it with at any given season. In Alaska we make do with whatever ingredients we are given. That’s why I love sourdough so much, gluten free be damned, it’s versatile, adaptable, strong, resilient and Contributed with just the slightest by Amber King amount of attention yields amazing results, much like most Alaskans and true Alaskan spirit. No wonder it has played such a prominent role in our history and lore. Consider ye a Cheechako until you have kept sourdough alive for several months to years; and stored a dried flake for reserve. Ruth Allman is an Alaskan Sourdough legend, if you don’t have at least two copies of her cookbook, one for you and one to loan out… you’d better start hitting up garage sales, thrift stores and used bookstores for a few copies. She has countless stories, pioneer advice and simple instructions on making amazing sourdough recipes. My favorites that I keep close at heart… think sugar to burn, and baking soda to sweeten, keep aired, attended to, fed and it will feed you. http://www.amazon.com/Alaska-Sourdough-Ruth-Allman/dp/0882400851

Sourdough Starter Potato recipe

3 cups of flour

2 cups thick potato water (2 potatoes)

4 teaspoons of sugar

2 tablespoons sugar (used to speed up reaction)

2 teaspoons of salt.

2 cups of flour Boil potatoes with skins on until they fall to pieces. Lift out skins, mash until a puree and cool down. Add more water if needed. Put in the rest of the ingredients. Mix/beat well, with wooden spoon until you have a smooth creamy batter. Place in a large ceramic or glass storage pot, and place in a warm area. (shelf behind wood stove pipe). Regular Starter is exactly the same with just regular water. Sourdough starter is a living product. After about three days it should start to bubble, when it does, you need to “feed it.” Mix a spoon full of sugar, and some flour. If too thick, add enough water to keep it smooth. After a week, it should have a million bubbles in it, when it has a bubbly froth on it, it is ready to use! Always use a wooden spoon when mixing starter as metal can leave a taste to it, and ruin it. In the old days, folks would store it in a wooden pail that held more then a gallon of starter. Others kept it buried in the top of the flour sack which kept it warm and safe and added the water and flour to make the right amount and consistency with out taking it out of the flour sack (saved on dishes).

2 tablespoons butter

To the sponge, add the sugar, salt, and oil (the oil is optional - you can use softened butter instead, or no oil at all). Mix well, then knead in the flour a half-cup at a time. Knead in enough flour to make a good, flexible bread dough. You can do this with an electric mixer, a bread machine on “dough cycle,” or a food processor. You can also do it with a big bowl and your bare hands. Keep in mind that flour amounts are approximate; and your sponge can vary in wetness. Use your judgment; treat it like ordinary white or french bread dough. Trust your hands and eyes more than the recipe, always. Let the dough rise in a warm place in a bowl covered loosely with a towel (if you’re using a bread machine’s dough cycle, let it rise in the machine). Note that sourdough rises more slowly than yeast bread; my starter takes about an hour or so, but some starters take much longer. Let the dough double in bulk, just like yeast-bread dough. When a finger poked into the top of the dough creates a pit that doesn’t “heal” (spring back), you’ve got a risen dough.

Modern storage and use:

Punch the dough down and knead it a little more. Make a loaf and place it on a baking sheet (lightly greased or sprinkled with cornmeal). Slit the top if you like, and cover the loaf with a paper towel and place it in a warm place to rise again, until doubled in bulk.

Once your starter is done, it should be kept in a wide mouth container, with a loose lid. It can be glass, ceramic jar or crockery, a large pickle /mayo jars work well. It should be kept in the fridge, until

Place the pan with the loaf in your oven, and then turn your oven to 350 degrees and bake the bread for 30-45 minutes. Do not preheat the oven. The loaf is done when the crust is brown and the bottom

Recipe

If you double, the above recipe you will get two huge, two-pound loaves of bread and the total price tag, will be less than a dollar, which fits my budget! NOTE: NEVER, use up all your original starter, and always, keep feeding back what you use. It’s real simple, just add flour & water.

2 tablespoons granulated sugar 1 egg 4 tablespoons olive oil 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 tablespoon warm water Mix all ingredients except baking soda and warm water to be added together just before cooking (and ready with a hot greased pan). I like to add the following for flavor, and originality: Leftovers (you name it, Chinese, Thai, Cajun rice, it’s all good in chewy sourdough! Give it a try) Corn, cilantro, onions and cumin, or blueberries, cardamom and walnuts. It also makes an amazing peach cobbler topping with a little added nutmeg and cinnamon! Ruth also had amazing Juneau history coming to Alaska in her thirties as the niece of Grace Bishop and Judge James Wickersham, she taught music and art in local schools and was one of the first organizers of the first Southeast Alaska Music Festival in 1934… A true folk fest pioneer! She remained most of her Alaskan life out in Excursion Inlet with her husband Jack, where she developed and honed many recipes featured in her book. In 1961 Ruth was named Juneau’s Woman of the Year and the USCG gave her a special award for unselfish voluntary commitment. She is still a pioneering legend and Alaska’s first and foremost expert in Sourdough. From my table to yours, Enjoy, Amber
