The Southeast Alaska Board of Realtors has partnered with AWARE, Inc., to take part in the White Ribbon Campaign. The campaign was formed in 1991 in Canada with the goal of ending domestic violence against women through activism, education and increasing public awareness. It has become an international movement. The board was nominated by AWARE’s Prevention Task Force and is the first agency to partner with AWARE in overseeing and promoting the campaign. “I believe that Realtors all have the common goal of creating strong communities,” said Mimi Rothchild, Presi-

dent of the Southeast Alaska Board of Realtors. “If we can assist in bringing awareness against domestic violence, this directly ties into that goal. I am excited and proud that our membership has decided to support the White Ribbon Campaign.” The campaign will launch in October during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Outreach efforts will include public events, pledge drives and a media campaign.

Surveying the Land(scape) By Charles L. Westmoreland Southeast Living

L

andscaping can be a beast of an endeavor, in both labor and money. It’s important to take a “survey of the land” before starting any home landscaping project.

FORM A PLAN Use graph paper to plan your landscape design. What you put down on paper should include all of your yard’s current elements in place and notes about what you intend to change. When compiling these notes also pay attention to which parts of your yard are hilly, rocky and shaded. You also need to keep in mind which areas get the most sun and where rainwater drains (or collects). Think of every factor that will affect your design once it’s in place.

Photos by Anna Hoke

Do you want to spend as much time as possible enjoying your yard, or is working in your yard enjoyment in itself? Think about how much time you want to spend mowing, watering, weeding and fertilizing – the essentials of maintaining a beautiful yard. And don’t forget to consider the surrounding wildlife. If you plant berry bushes you may find that neighboring bears are as fond of them as you are.

KNOW YOUR LIMITS Know the difference between what you can do and what you think you can do. Basic planting, mulching and gardening require some know-how and effort. Leveling an entire yard or removing tall trees and heavy stumps may require help from a professional landscaper or contractor. Biting off more than you can chew can cost more money in the long term or possibly lead to injury.

It’s important to take a “survey of the land” before starting any home landscaping project. SET A BUDGET

SOIL SAMPLE

Shop around your local nurseries and landscape companies to pinpoint an approximate cost. Don’t let your funds run dry before the project is complete, and if you’re performing a full overhaul yourself then you may need to finish the work in phases over a couple of summers.

What quality of soil does your yard consist of? Kits to test your yard’s soil are readily available. This will help to ensure the plants and flowers you choose will grow and thrive, and how much maintenance will be required.

KNOW WHAT GROWS Length of the growing season, soil and overall climate of Southeast Alaska is different than the Lower 48, so it goes without saying that some of the plants that surrounded your home down south are more difficult to grow here. Speak to someone at your local nursery for suggestions and to learn about native plants to Southeast Alaska. Native plants are much more resistant to insects and diseases. Fewer chemicals will be needed and the likelihood of seeing your landscape in full bloom increases.

Completing a home landscape design is a fulfilling and rewarding experience. By planning ahead you will save time, money and energy. For the extra eco-conscious gardener try the following: Collect rain water – Conserve water and save money by gathering rain water in barrels that can be used to water gardens and indoor and outdoor plants. Create your own compost – Using organic kitchen and outdoor waste you can produce your own compost. Not only do you save money on fertilizers but

you will also b e creating a natural and rich source of nutrients for you plants and garden. Dozens of online sites can tell you how to create and outdoor compost heaps.

indoor

Use natural and recycled materials – Try working natural stones, old bricks and recyclable concrete into

your landscape design. When used properly these materials can create a natural, antique look.

Designing a Landscape Theme Southeast Living

S

electing a landscape design theme is a fun way to express creativity and add uniqueness to your home’s outer beauty. You don’t have to be a landscape architect to create your own personal Eden, but it certainly doesn’t hurt to know a few basic rules of landscape design. Keep it Simple, Repeat Keep your plant and flower selections simple and use repetition. Repeating flower

and color patterns adds a sense of wholeness among the various plant varieties. Consider the size, texture and color of the plants and how they will compliment and contrast one another. Transition and Flow To avoid drastic changes in pattern you can gently transition from flower beds to shrubs and then trees. This will keep taller trees, shrubs and bushes from towering over your flower gardens. Also consider how these elements together will direct a person’s

eyes. Do you want smooth, rounded lines that flow or straight lines that direct a person’s attention to a focal point? Also take into account the style of home you have when choosing a theme. If you have a modern-style home a Formal theme may look best, whereas a Garden theme might better suit a cabin or cottage-style home. Here are just a few styles to get the creative juices flowing. There are many more to choose from. Some styles you

won’t see on this list — like the Tropical, Southwest and Mediterranean — because they are impractical. We do live in a rainforest after all. Formal A Formal theme uses straight lines and precise geometric shapes to create symmetrical landscape patterns. Formal themes fit well with more modern home styles. Plants used in Formal themes often require higher maintenance, particularly with pruning and shaping.

Informal An Informal theme is more relaxed and natural by using curving flower beds placed in various locations throughout the landscape. Instead of hedges an Informal theme might use perennials to create borders. The more natural look works well with most styles of homes. Garden The Garden theme is without any formal borders and often features a brick or stone walkway that leads to a garden where flow-

ers and vegetables grow. Oriental The Oriental theme works well in smaller yards, though this theme doesn’t mesh with every style of home. Each piece of the landscape should be unique from the rest. Don’t follow patterns or schemes found in other styles. Rock pathways, evergreens, ponds, flowing water and simplistic colors provide a sense of tranquility. Be creative, have fun and start designing.

State agency no longer accepting housing vouchers The Alaska Housing Finance Corp. is no longer accepting low-income vouchers in Anchorage, the agency announced recently. Approximately 4,587 families in Anchorage are on the waiting list for the vouchers, given to low-income residents and capping the amount of rent they must pay at 30 percent of the household income. The remaining amount is paid by the AHFC. A agency won’t be accepting any more low-income housing vouchers because the list has thousands of names on it and officials don’t want to give people false hope. An Anchorage city official said one problem was a lack of affordable housing for those on the waiting list. AHFC is closing the Anchorage voucher waiting list as of June 1.
