Letter from the Publisher Leavin’ on a Jet Plane Welcome to June! Summer is in full swing. Soccer and softball have started, many of us have dipped or dunked our bodies in the ocean, perhaps caught a fish or two. As I sit here and bask in the glory of summer, I also reflect on last June and how it was so different from today. Last June I was large, and very pregnant and on June 9th during my 32nd week of pregnancy, my little bun wanted out of the oven before she was done baking. After a sleepless night with the lovely Bartlett Regional Hospital OB staff, and a couple measures to try and stop contractions, the decision was made to medevac myself, and husband to somewhere with a neonatal ward in case labor couldn’t be stopped and our baby girl decided to make an appearance. In case you didn’t know, Bartlett will deliver babies at 36 weeks gestation and past that, anything earlier, mama and baby get a plane ride. We were lucky enough to be able to choose which hospital
we wanted to go to. We chose Providence in Anchorage as we have family there (pictured: me on my one of two wheelchair rides I was allowed each day). We were doubly lucky that we had purchased an annual membership with Airlift Northwest, which is a medevac service that services Southeast Alaska and beyond. The membership is $99 and applies to the household in conjunction with your primary insurance. There are a number of
benefits that go with this membership such as billing and accepting your insurance company. It was so nice to not have to worry about the extremely high cost that incurs with a medevac. I highly recommend purchasing a membership whether it be with Airlift Northwest or Guardian Flight, another medevac company that services Southeast Alaska. I certainly am not an alarmist and try not to
dwell on the “what if ’s” in life because you never really know, but because the membership is affordable I’d recommend it. Especially if you or a family member has any medical conditions or natural life chances like pregnancy that might need to take you to a higher level of medical care not offered in Juneau. Now in case you’re wondering, after the medevac and arriving at Providence we had a few long days that turned into weeks slowing labor and ultimately finding a medication that mostly subsided the contractions and there I stayed until my 36th week of pregnancy when I was then cleared to fly home. Happy June Southast Alaska, have so much fun and stay safe!

Last month I said “do this”….so to balance it out, here is your “don’t do this” article. Sugar. I am now exclusively seeing patients for Naturopathic Orthopedics and limited aesthetics. Primarily, I’m offering regenerative injection therapies – prolotherapy and platelet rich plasma (PRP). What makes my use of these injections so different from many standard medical clinics doing similar injections is that I still see and treat the person as a whole. You are not your pain alone and your pain is most often not the result of a simple joint dysfunction. It does little good to inject that joint with whatever your solution of choice is if contributing factors, including diet, exercise, lifestyle and other medical conditions such as autoimmunity are not addressed as well. I’ve chosen to mostly ignore this issue for years (because I didn’t want to give it up myself). Sugar. It has tremendous negative impact on our bodies, including joints. It’s easy to think sugar consumption is not a problem for us if we are not diabetic, dealing with

metabolic syndrome or obesity. What you may not know is that research links sugar consumption to conditions as varied and serious as cancer and heart disease to mood disorders and immune suppression, just to name a few. The list of ill effects of sugar on the body is incredibly lengthy. Cancer is the “Big C Word” that grabs everyone’s attention. However, this isn’t necessarily new information about the role of sugar in cancer. A review of studies in this area was published in the journal Integrative Cancer Therapy in 2003 because mounting evidence between insulin and the etiology as well as the prognosis in colon, prostate, pancreatic, and, particularly, breast cancer were becoming apparent. Not only were they finding that sugar may contribute to cancer growth, but it was interfering with treatment. What else is sugar interfering with? Sugar is highly addictive. Sugar raises our neurotransmitter levels: dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine. I first became aware of this claim during college

when I read the dietary classic by William Dufty, Sugar Blues. It was published in 1975. The years since his publication have only confirmed that Americans can’t seem to get enough and are paying the price with their health. According to the Centers for Disease Control, in the last 30 years, obesity in children has more than doubled and in adolescents rates have quadrupled. These children then go on to have a nearly 90% rate of becoming obese adults. Over one-third of adults in the United States are currently obese. Alaska ranks 24th highest adult obesity rate in the country. Texas is finally bigger than us in this category – coming in at # 11 in the nation for the highest percentage of obese adults. For once, we should just let Texas keep that “bigger” title. This is an epidemic with serious health consequences. Our reward pathways in our brains literally are being hard wired by sugar. While a very small study, MRI research at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine in 2014 was clinically significant because it showed that when given sugar, the brains of obese children showed greater response and activity in the areas of the brain involved with reward pathways. The conclusion they want to share is that not only may some children be born with a predisposition to seek sugary foods, but their brains more quickly wire to learn a reward pathway in response to sugar that keeps them seeking yet more sugar. A condition that gets carried into adulthood. Prevention is key. Start by delaying sugary food introduction to infants as well as significantly restricting children’s sugar intake. We set our kids up for a difficult battle against obesity when we re-enforce this reward pathway with sugar. What makes this even more difficult is that the current national standards concerning recommendations for food and food labeling laws all work against us. They are developed less by scientific data and more by the great influence of “Big Agra” and the food industry corporations - who
have a huge financial stake in making sure we keep seeking more and more food. Artificial sweeteners are a poison all their own. You cannot simply replace sugar with a chemical substitute. Sugar hides in many foods and under many names. Calorie restriction alone is not enough. Standard diet recommendations are not what I ever see work in my clinical practice for people trying to lose fat and keep it off. These standard diet recommendations also fuel my patient’s pain and break down their bodies. Paint that Front Door 2 A few months ago I encouraged readers to get out and paint those white straight-from-thefactory front doors and I’m hopeful that some of you By Susan Stopher have done just Stopher Construction that. I lived up to my promise and I painted my front door. And, I’m going to be driving around Juneau looking for other front doors that have been painted recently too. I know I presented some of the challenges I faced in the first article but let’s revisit that a bit. It’s hard to decide on a color for the front door. When considering the siding and trim colors it can be difficult to find the right balance. My siding is dark green and my trim is black, which ruled out lots of the trendy doors on Pinterest
and since there is no way I’m repainting my house or trim this year, I have to work with these parameters in mind. In the end I picked a fairly neutral color for a few reasons. First, I didn’t end up liking the more dramatic colors with my home color scheme. Second, I wanted to paint the door the same color inside the house as it was outside the house. And finally I
knew if I painted it neutral and didn’t like it in a year, I could paint it again. What to do with the trim around the door can also be a challenge. Personally, I normally like all of the house trim to match so I opted for the same trim color as the rest of the house. Luckily our local paint store still had my trim color and house color on file so I could have both on hand in the event of any mishaps. It turns out I needed both colors for touch ups
as there were some challenging lines around the trim. I’m happy with how my front door turned out, it’s subtle but it looks polished and finished to me which is a great improvement. While reality TV transformations are all about drama and intrigue, I wanted my house to be practical and pleasant to look at on a daily basis. I’m OK that my front door doesn’t inspire a reality TV show. I’d rather have it be reality. Susan Stopher currently serves as office manager for Stopher Construction, LLC. o n e t h i n g that many pet parents can all lament is the critical lack in pet friendly housing. I get it. I know some amazing pet parents, but I also have met some pet parents that leave something – or a lot – to be desired. The same people who never clean up after their dogs on trails, are the same people that never clean up after their pets in their own yard. And unfortunately, those people probably don’t live in a bubble; they probably share a yard, share a driveway, or at least share a view on a street. No one w a n t s

As frustrating as it is to have a negative neighbor, there is nothing more awesome than being or having an amazing neighbor! I have been lucky enough to have such an amazing neighbor, and their poor basset hound named Tugboat. Just like Auke Bay attracts the water dogs, and North Douglas is home to the more adventurous in their solitude, so South Douglas is the dog park.
Every Saturday morning at 9am is a community dog walk at Sandy Beach, and the beach is an explosion of wagging tails and happy chatter. The old Treadwell Mine is a mix of past and present, as old relics of our mining days litter the beach, and strong tides will wash up new artifacts. Every now and then, new art decorates the dilapidated walls of the stone buildings. At one point a paper mache dancing girl even hung from the ceiling, and the wind made her dance in her own splendid solitude. One year a local artist made a giant wind chime from logs strung between old pilings, and when the fierce Taku winds raced across the beach, they whipped around the chimes and the beach rang out.
Poor Tugboat was often subjected to my puppy’s enthusiastic exclamations and exuberant licking. He bayed in true basset fashion to voice his displeasure with the licking frontal assault. However, he was always a good sport in dealing with this dreaded girlfriend that lived down the street. Like Tugboat, Kiska had many doggy friends living around Sandy Beach. We spent many happy hours a day on the beach: morning, noon, and night we hit the sand and frolicked with our furry companions. The joy that parents experience watching their children grow and change is not lost on canine parents. Being able to watch puppies mature into dogletts, and dogletts into dogs, is a joy we share. But, not only is South Douglas and Sandy Beach a wonderful dog community, is also the starting point for my favorite mountain: Mount Jumbo. I personally consider Mt Jumbo to be McGinnis’s little sister. Like any good neighbor, she sits patiently between two houses, with just a modest sign to point travelers on their way. Like many adventurous women, she has like-minded friends. The Mount Jumbo trail connects with the Treadwell Ditch before turning off and heading up through the meadows and over the hill. Like most true Southeast Alaskans, she loves a sunny afternoon,
and her trail is best hiked after a few dry days. She challenges you with her steep and rocky climb, yet she gives you places to rest your feet and packs; she takes your breath away, but she promises you her summit if you are committed to make the journey. It might be a little silly, but we actually park at Sandy Beach, walk to the tide line, then start our accent of Mt Jumbo – that way we truly hike from sea to summit. And of course, there are plenty of dogs to share the summit view with.
Courtney Wendel has lived in Juneau since she was a year old. She has a twin brother and an older brother, and learned to enjoy the outdoors at a young age by following the boys into mischief. Graduating from JDHS in 2006, she attended UAS to receive her Literature of the Environment, BA English degree. When not at work she spends most of her time on the diverse trail system hiking, running, or camping with her spotted pooch and adventure buddies.

Recipe
Ingredients: 1/2 cup peanut oil 1/2 cup fresh lime juice 4 tbsp. dark brown sugar 2 tbsp. apple cider vinegar 2 tbsp. dried thyme 2 tbsp. soy sauce 4 tsp. fresh ground allspice 8 cloves garlic 8 habanero chiles, stemmed 8 green onions, chopped 2 shallots, roughly chopped 1 -1” piece ginger, peeled and smashed Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste I prefer heavy on black pepper 8 whole skin-on, bone-in chicken legs and thighs

barbecue. Origins of West Africa found their way across the Atlantic to the mountains of Jamaica where it has become a national dish. I love Jerk with Grace’s Fish and Meat sauce. I haven’t found it in Juneau yet, but thanks to online ordering I can still relive those sandy warm beaches and afternoon rain squalls with this magical combination. While traditional Jerk is cooked over a steel drum might be hard to duplicate for most Southeast folks there are some amazing bbq pits and outdoor ovens that can be accomplished in Alaska. 1. Combine the oil, lime juice, sugar, vinegar, thyme, soy sauce, allspice, garlic, chilies, scallions, shallots, ginger, and salt and pepper in the bowl of a food processor and process until smooth or use a mortar and pestle. Place chicken in a 9” x 13” baking dish and pour marinade over it; massage marinade into chicken, making sure to push it under the skin. Cover chicken with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 8 hours or overnight. 2. Build a medium-hot fire in a charcoal grill or heat a gas grill to medium-high. Or, heat a grill pan over medium-high heat. Place chicken on grill over direct heat and cook, turning occasionally, until it begins to brown, about 10 minutes. Transfer chicken to indirect heat, or reduce heat to medium-low, and continue cooking, turning occasionally, until chicken is cooked through, about 45 minutes. To serve, transfer chicken to a plate. SERVES 6 – 8
