It’s very impressive to see businesses and community members come together and create such a wonderful, informative and educational event. Another fun thing that I got to be involved in and is new to this year’s Home and Outdoor Show is the “Ugliest Bathroom Contest” organized by SEABIA. Entries were submitted for a chance to win a bathroom remodel. The top five photos submitted on Facebook to the SEABIA page with the most votes will then be entered for final voting at the Home and Outdoor Show wine tasting event on Friday March 7, 5-8pm. I am so excited to see who wins the remodel, and if you are too and are over twenty-one years of age, come to the wine tasting event and place your vote! Lastly on the Home Show front, In the midst of all the show excitement, don’t forget about daylight savings time on March 9 to “spring forward!” Later in the month is a local event that I also
put a lot of time and effort into, on and off the field; which is the Shamrock International Soccer Tournament. The soccer tournament happens mid March each year with teams from Juneau and teams traveling from Whitehorse and Petersburg. It’s a whirlwind weekend tournament that is a lot of fun and a great networking opportunity for adult soccer players in Juneau and Southeast Alaska. And lastly, March 20 marks the Spring Equinox. I’ve had enough of winter, though I might dabble in a little spring skiing but I’m ready to move onto spring and then summer! If I don’t see you at the Home Show, or the Shamrock tourney, I’ll see you in April Southeast Alaska! • Anna Hoke is the graphic designer and owner of Southeast Living Magazine. reaking from our normal discussion of Before & After’s, we’ve opted to highlight some of our past designs for Wearable Arts over the years. This was our 9th year to participate in the design of the JAHC fundraiser, and we could not be happier with the results! Year after year, we consistently challenge ourselves to incorporate new concepts and to push a little farther than the year before; as we continue to explore new territory of theatrical event design. How did you come up with the concept and what inspired it? The concept of the show was derived from our desire for a theme that would

incorporate a tremendous amount of color and be left open for interpretation by the artists. We were also interested in incorporating more videography too, which was an element first introduced in 2013’s Organix show by Patty Kalbrener. With video on the brain, we thought it would be a cool element to shoot a “music video” for each model and the director’s, Shona Strauser, background in professional theatre guided us towards the Motion Picture Industry; resulting in Technicolor! Did you have any difficulties or challenges?
2006 BETWEEN THE TIDES
One of the biggest challenges in this year’s show was achieving a schedule that would accommodate the production of the videos. Not only did thirty-nine entries need to completely finished and shot a week before the show, but it was also a goal to capture the “making of ” these artistic pieces starting back in November. Time was also required for the coordination of the music, choreography, and editing of the footage too. Fortunately, with only a few minor technical difficulties, the production schedule kept everyone on track! Design wise, we still needed to light
the space in an over-the-top, colorful way. We opted to construct large drum shades and illuminate them with LED lighting. The construction of these elements was challenging because they had to be large scale, light weight, and cost effective. We ultimately discovered that PVC piping was the perfect framing material because it was also strong enough to maintain its form once the fabric was stretched tightly around each drum frame. The programmable LED’s also allowed the lighting designer, Mike Inwood, to achieve an endless amount of effects to coordinate with the music videos and further personalize the runway for each

piece of wearable art. Favorite memory of this year or years past? The challenges overcome each year usually result in being the most memorable! One of our favorites was “Altered State,” where we projected images on the back of weather balloons for an unusual effect. Not only was this the first year we incorporated inspirational video and images from the artists, but ensuring the balloons would stay inflated throughout the
During the shows “Carnival of the North” and “Between the Tides,” the literal creation of over-sized backdrops was achieved by carving Styrofoam insulation into the shapes and hand painting them. While it was very time consuming, the effect was quite realistic. Is there anything else you may want to add? weekend became a concern as well. Another balloon related challenge was “Cirque du Pluie,” where we created a grand scale chandelier in the shape of a rain drop made up of hundreds of upside down balloons filled with one cup of water. Achieving the shape was a true test in geometry to say the least! For “Organix,” we wanted to create a large chandelier that supported the theme of incorporating materials that were raw and as unaltered as possible. The resulting chandelier was made up of hundreds of light bulbs, each dropped from a single cord. The real challenge was powering the chandelier in a way that allowed the lighting designer to control each bulb individually; giving it the “sparkle effect.”

A Home That Works For You
W
hat type of home works for you? Let me clarify what I mean by this, does your home perform for you as an occupant? I’m not talking about if the kitchen is big enough or that the bathroom updated. What I’m asking is, does your home function well, does it provide suitable shelter, is it a healthy place to live, is it comfortable, warm and sound? All these questions are related to the way a home functions or works for the occupants. Does the home keep rain and groundwater out? This answers the first question of whether your home provides suitable shelter. In this temperate rain forest climate the weather does not get dry enough or warm enough to suitably dry a structure if it is getting wet from a leak in the roof, has ground water seeping into the crawlspace, rain slipping behind a window, or ice backing up
under your shingles. In this climate, those leaks will not dry themselves out. Those leaky areas will remain wet until they are manually dried or removed. Our climate here in Alaska doesn’t allow drying too often. Although, that week of clear frigid cold in early
occupants, could create a rainstorm in the attic without even knowing it. The cold brings up another issue. Is your home comfortable? Again, I mean comfortable in the sense of warmth and drafts, not in the sense of new bathroom or kitchen. Windows and
The battle goes on and on and the colder it gets, the higher the pressure differential, the faster the warm air escapes. February does do a good job of drying things out. During that cold spell it could have been raining in your attic. Really, rain in your attic. Not only can exterior water enter your house, but also a home can, or should I say the
doors result in a significant amount energy or heat loss. Not only that, but in areas that are not easily seen, heat is escaping through wire and plumbing penetrations into the attic, and out the walls. This is what can cause that rainstorm in your attic. Warm moist

air escaping from the living space traveling through these small openings, the moist air is getting colder, colder still rising up to the roof deck and now By Greg Stopher the air has hit its Stopher Construction dew point and condensates on the roof deck like my cold beer that I just pulled out of the fridge and hence a rain storm in you attic. This can happen inside the walls as well. Also, the warm escaping air is then replaced with cold air from outside that then needs to be heated. The battle goes on and on and the colder it gets, the higher the pressure differential, the faster the warm air escapes. Hot air will rise, escape, and is replaced with cold outside air. Cold air is heated and the cycle starts again.

Okay, we need to stop water infiltration into our building and find a way to stop heat and air loss out of the home. Lets do something about the leaks and escaping air to make our homes a better place to live. Routine home maintenance is the key to finding leaks before they get out of hand and cause serious health, rot, or structural problems. Inspecting an attic once a year can reveal a lot of problems within a home whether it is roof leak from rain or condensation on the underside of the roof decking from air leakage and lack of insulation. Inspect windows and siding for any signs of leaks so they can be opened up and dried properly. A leaky window or flashing is not going to repair itself and will rarely dry itself in this climate. Usually heat will need to be applied or some type
of air leakage are wires and plumbing penetrations into the attic, exterior wall outlets and switches, attic access hatches, above the top plates on walls, around windows and doors. Another common area is at the bottom plate of a wall, which can be exposed by removing the base trim in most cases. When the air sealing is done and all the other exterior moisture issues have been addressed, you should have at least a dry structure for a home.
of dehumidification. Wet insulation loses its R-value or resistance to transfer heat. After wet fiberglass insulation is dried it does regain its heat resistance or R-value. Next would be adding
an air barrier to stop the airflow. A spray in foam is the best remedy for air leakage, as well as, caulking, rigid foam, and 6-mil plastic. Find the air leaks and seal them. Common areas

continued: A Home That Works For You Replacing windows and doors with more energy efficient models will also help keep the occupants more comfortable. One of the keys to windows is the number of glazings. Triple-glazed windows are much more efficient for just a little more cost than double-glazed windows. To go even further into windows and if the supplier is willing to work with the glazings, try to get different SHGC (solar heat gain coefficient) on different sides of your home. The SHGC should be highest on the southern side of you home, now the window will be working for you and gaining solar heat, thus reducing your heating costs. With an existing home it is pretty much impossible to reorient your home so that it will be a passive solar house but every little bit will count. Long summer days can be a problem with windows that allow a lot of solar heat gain since the home may
become uncomfortable in summer months. While the windows are being replaced, and if they are replaced right then they should be air tight, well insulated, and hold out the rain. Your house in now structurally dry, warm, and draft free but it still might not be comfortable. Without proper ventilation, your home may now be accumulating an interior moisture issue for being sealed up and insulated. This is where the healthy part comes in. Ventilate. We don’t get sick because it’s cold outside. We get sick because we spend more time indoors or in places that don’t get proper ventilation. In the summer, the windows are open and the ventilation is provided by a light breeze, even, no breeze. In the winter, well we lock all that moisture and unhealthy air in with us and we get sick. HRV or Heat Recovery Ventilation
systems are efficient at changing the air inside the home and transferring the heat to the cold incoming air. With an HRV you’re no longer losing the heat to the outside or to the attic but transferring it to the exchanging air. If an HRV is not included with added insulation and air sealing then bathroom and kitchen fans must be used to exchange the moist air that is produced during bathing and cooking. If your home is sealed up very tight it will need some sort of makeup air. Be aware of where this make up air is coming from. It could be coming from a garage with other hazards or a crawlspace with moisture-laden air. There are so many components that go into a home (many which are not mentioned in this article) that need to work together as a whole system. Get one component right and another component may be thrown out of

whack. Do A, B, and C, on an energy audit list and don’t do F because the payback may not be as much. Well the payback now might be warmth but an unhealthy home. We spend so much time in our homes that we should have a dry, warm, and healthy place to spend our lives. he Southeast Alaska Building Industry Association (SEABIA) is pleased to host the 2014 Home & Outdoor Show. This is the 35th Annual Home Show hosted by SEABIA here in Juneau. This year’s show theme follows our Southeast Alaska living style – if we’re not indoors, then we’re outdoors – so we invited outdoor vendors to participate in the show this year as well. Construction is projected to be on the rise this year both at the National and local level. Our members are here to help with that endeavor. Our builder members have the right training and skills to help with your new construction or remodel needs this season. Now is a great time to start thinking about spring projects on the house, yard, boat, and more!

With over 60 exhibitors at this year’s show, it is your opportunity to meet local builders, specialized contractors, suppliers, bankers, realtors, city and state government, along with auto and boat dealers, furniture and more. This is a great opportunity to talk with vendors and get an idea of what is available for your next project. You can also take a look at a new vehicle, and boating options available; no Southeast Alaska home is complete without a boat. The kickoff event for the 2014 Home & Outdoor show is Friday night, March 7, with the wine tasting event for those over 21 years of age. Marlintini’s and Southern Odom Wine & Spirits will be hosting the wine tasting with Abby’s Kitchen providing great food. An added feature to this event is the final
voting for the SEABIA sponsored Ugliest Bathroom contest. The top five submissions from the contest voting on our Facebook page will be on display during the Wine Tasting event and each attendee will have an opportunity to vote for their choice. Friday night’s relaxed atmosphere provides a great opportunity to visit the exhibitors, while visiting with friends. Tickets are available in advance or at the door. We look forward to seeing you at the Show! Rich Harris President Southeast Alaska Building Industry Association

2014 Shamrock Soccer Tournament The 3rd Annual Shamrock Tournament is happening this year on March 14-16. For those who don’t know,
this is a Southeast Alaska invitational tournament for adult soccer players. The tournament is coed and played indoors. Given that the tournament falls around St. Patrick’s Day, the event is known as the Shamrock Tournament. There will be six teams battling it out over six games for a chance to lift the Shamrock Trophy. One of those teams will be from Whitehorse and one team will be from Petersburg. The other four teams will be made up of local Juneau soccer players. Spectators are encouraged to stop by the Dimond Park Field House and cheer on your home town favorites. In addition to this exciting, fast paced soccer, the Shamrock also includes a banquet for all of Juneau’s soccer community. The Shamrock Banquet happens on Saturday March 15 at the Red Dog Saloon. information about banquet tickets and timing. Along with the annual 7-A-Side tournament in late May and the Competitive League tournaments in
mid August, the Shamrock Tournament is organized by the Capital City Soccer League (CCSL). Increasing adult soccer opportunities in Juneau and Southeast Alaska is what the CCSL is all about. Currently we have men’s and women’s competitive leagues, a women’s classic league, a masters league, and open field
nights happening throughout the year. For more information , please check out our website at: www.juneausoccer.com

Randi Wilson, C.I.D. Interior Decorator
I am very excited about my new association with Stopher Construction! As an eco-friendly designer, I am committed to the three R’s of green living: Recycle, Reuse, and Renewable (resources). In a remote community like Juneau, it is important to keep items out of the landfill. Reusing and re-purposing items, whether found in your own home, at a garage sale or consignment shop, not only keeps costs down, but provides opportunities for unique, customized interiors. For example, a sofa can be slip covered or reupholstered, or an old door can be turned into a headboard or a dining room table. When items like flooring or countertops need to be replaced, recycled and renewable resources are great options. Floors can be covered in reclaimed wood, or eco-friendly cork or bamboo. Other options include hardwood, laminate or engineered flooring that has been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Countertops can be composed of recycled materials such as glass, crushed stone and even recycled paper. Nothing can change the look of a room as quickly and affordably as a coat of paint on the walls. Kitchen or bathroom cabinets can also be sanded and painted for a completely new look at a fraction of the cost of new cabinetry. While lowVOC and no-VOC paint tends to be a little more expensive, it is worth it to preserve air quality. I believe my services will provide Juneau residents with a new, unique option in the interior decorating marketplace, proving that a stylish and eco-friendly atmosphere does not have to break the bank. FACTS ABOUT HEATING OIL TANKS • In 2013, there were 26 reported Heating Oil Tank related spills in Southeast Alaska, 99 state-wide. • For leaks: One drop of fuel every 10 seconds equals about 40 gallons in a year. One drop every second equals about 1,200 gallons in a year. • In addition to possible health concerns and environmental damage, the cost of cleanup AFTER a spill is much more expensive than cost to replace the tank BEFORE a spill. Possible cleanup related expenses are: tank and fuel replacement, environmental consultants, contaminated soil excavation and disposal, cleanup and absorbent materials, and sample analysis. • ADEC recommends that homeowners track their fuel consumption, to assist in detecting a possible leak, especially in underground tanks.
