We’re Marching!
W
elcome to March where I am “marching” to a furious pace. Though it may be soupy outside seemingly at a weather lull with an indecisive transition of winter and spring, my life is in full force. March is probably the busiest month of the year for me. First it kicks off with this March edition, which is the largest and most popular edition as it is the Home (and Outdoor) Show Special Edition. This year we are excited to announce that we will be contributing 10% of our March edition ad sales from new Home Show advertisers back to SEABIA as a way to give back to the organization. I love participating in the Home Show, where Southeast Living Magazine has had a table the last four years and we are excited for our fifth. The Home Show is where the
opportunity for adult soccer players in Juneau and Southeast Alaska. If you aren’t too busy (like me) this month, check out our new Game Page on page 26. The Game Page will be a continuing feature in the magazine from now on so pick it up each month for a new puzzle or game. If you or your business is interested in sponsoring the page, please let us know! If I don’t see you at the Home Show, or the Shamrock tourney, I’ll see you in April Southeast Alaska!

magazine made its debut, Happy 4th Birthday to us! It’s very impressive to see businesses and community members come together and create such a wonderful, informative and educational event. Later in the month is another local
event that I also put a lot of time and effort into, on and off the field; which is the Shamrock International Soccer Tournament. The soccer tournament happens mid March each year with teams from Juneau and teams traveling from Whitehorse and Petersburg. It’s a whirlwind weekend tournament that is a lot of fun and a great networking

TIPS FOR DETERMINING PET FOOD QUALITY (BPT) - Because pets are such beloved members of the family, it isn’t a surprise that pet parents want what is right for the health of their furry friends. In fact, nearly four out of five pet owners say they choose a pet food based on how nutritious or how healthy they think it will be for their pet, while only 10 percent say they make a selection based on how their pets may like the taste, according to the Buying & Choosing Pet Food survey recently conducted by PetMD and Pet360. While the survey found that 60 percent of respondents said they always consider the label when making a pet food purchase, 34 percent of pet parents agreed that it is “virtually impossible to determine the quality of pet food ingredients simply by reading the information on the package or ingredient label.” It might surprise pet owners that what’s on the pet food container doesn’t necessarily tell them how nutri-
tious the food is. “Pet food labels aren’t always straightforward in terms of helping pet parents determine the quality of the ingredients and the nutrition found in a specific food,” says Dr. Ellen Lowery, director of U.S. Veterinary and Professional Affairs at Hill’s Pet Nutrition. “What is listed on the label is often different from what a pet parent imagines it to be, and it can be difficult to determine the true quality of the ingredients.” Dr. Lowery has several tips to help pet parents find the right food for their pets. • Discuss your pet’s nutritional needs with your veterinarian. • Review the brand’s reputation. Many start-up brands don’t have veterinary nutritionists on staff, nor do they
have the facilities to test the nutritional quality of the food they make, such as through feeding trials with real pets. Established and trusted premium pet food brands like Hill’s Pet Nutrition have robust quality-assurance programs in place to ensure the quality and safety of the foods your pet consumes. • Pay attention to the regulatory statement. If the pet food brand bag includes a statement containing the initials AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials), you know that the food has been tested against this organization’s measures
to contain at least the minimum nutrients required for that statement to be included on the packaging. This statement simply certifies that the product contains that nutritional element - it doesn’t certify that the element is healthy for your pet, or that it will help Fido or Fluffy live a healthier life.

• Know who makes the food. Many pet parents assume a brand makes the food it sells but this is often not the case. Dr. Lowery recommends pet parents look for a “manufactured by” listing on the product to know if the brand made the food or is just selling it. “I think it’s best to trust a company that makes its food under the watchful eyes of its own employees to make sure the food meets the company’s quality standards, rather than trusting the safety procedures of an unknown manufacturer,” she says. • Is there a phone number to call? Brand companies should value your feedback, especially when it comes to feeding a beloved pet. Look for a tollfree consumer phone number on the packaging that you can easily call if you have questions or need additional information.

Good food will keep your dog’s tail happily wagging and your cat content and purring. Use these tips from Dr. Lowery to know what makes a premium, high-quality pet food, so you know that your pawed friends are getting the best food you can give them.

Letter from Home Show Committee Chair Every year the Southeast Alaska Building Industry Association (SEABIA) Home Show Committee works very hard to create new ideas to make the annual show come alive. This year the Committee decided on the Home & Outdoor Living Expo with a theme: “RePurposed Living in Juneau”. We have invited our members to participate in a friendly competition by creating something cool with used materials, the creations will be judged, and will be auctioned off by silent bid to the public. March 13th, 2015 “kicks off” the Expo with our annual wine and beer tasting event that has become a community favorite; you will be able to taste your way through many food flavors created by Rockwell, wines, and yes even beer by Odom Corporation and Southern Wine & Spirits of Alaska, along with background music by Tom Locher on keyboard, all while casually exploring Centennial Hall between 5pm and 8pm. Purchase your wine and beer tasting tickets early for $20.00 each or $25.00 at the Centennial Hall doors, and your tickets will be good all weekend. The Home and Outdoor Living Expo will continue with general admission through March 14th 10am-5pm and March 15th 11am-4pm. Tickets are $6.00. You will be able to speak to a variety of vendors, all under one roof, these professionals will help you realize the possibilities are endless, all you need is help. Also scheduled throughout the weekend are fun events for the kids, educational seminars covering a wide range of topics, something for everyone. Whatever you might be looking for - you will find what you need at the Home and Outdoor Living Expo!

International Builders Show In January I was able to travel to the International Builders Show or IBS as professionals in the building industry call it. Put on by the NAHB (National Association of Home Builders) IBS draws building industry professionals from all over North America. The show was co-located with the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS), the International Window Coverings Expo, and the International Surface Event, as well as the Las Vegas Market. It totals up to 125,000 housing industry professionals and this year was attended by more than 55,000 attendees from all over North America visiting with roughly 1200 exhibitors. Attendees walk almost a half million square feet of showroom floor in search of the latest and greatest building products from foundation systems to the roof, and from fasteners to fixtures. Classes are also offered throughout the three days at IBS on everything from how-to’s, trends, technology, and the business of building and remodeling.

countertop the options are endless. Making the selection process easier for the homeowner will make a project more enjoyable. Options for hardwood flooring can entail at least six different choices. The first selection option in hardwood flooring would be engineered wood or hardwood, then it opens into color, width, nailed, glued, floating, and all the selections have sub-selections and so on until a flooring is found. Material selections can be mind-boggling and as a builder I would rather be on the jobsite, but I have also learned that person-construction preparation is priceless for both the builder and the homeowner. As a builder/remodeler I also learned that as the options are almost endless, selection options should not be. That doesn’t mean that a homeowner doesn’t have options or choices, it just means that a builder needs to have a process that is easy for a homeowner to make all the selections that go into picking a materials for a home build or a remodel. The goal is to make having a house built or remodeled enjoyable, as well as, a final outcome that can be enjoyed for decades to come.
At the International Builders Show I also toured three different homes, one built permanently i n a sub-division east of Las Vegas,
also known as the New American Home, and two other homes temporarily built in the outdoor area of the show. These homes featured all the latest and greatest technology that goes into a home. Home automation consisting of heating, lights, and doors. These items were not around 5 years ago. These homes are not energy suckers either, in fact they are almost off the grid, generating heat and power from air, earth, and solar. They use materials built into the home that clean formaldehyde and other toxins from the air. They are using low VOCs paints and finishes to
help in indoor air quality. The use of foams, weatherization products, and heating systems are efficient, easy to use, and make these structures very comfortable to live in. A house needs t o
work as a system, not just a bunch of building products thrown together to make a home. A system that works for the homeowner, is durable, is comfortable, and is fun to live in. Attending these trade shows is beneficial for me as builder/remodeler. They give me a chance to network with other builders big and small throughout the country to see what is working for them and share some of my successes with

Random fact: up to 50% of your home’s heating energy can by lost through your windows.
This last home incorporates a great deal of windows that not only look down onto the neighbors below but also allow a great deal of cold air in due to their old age and grand size. Fortunately, the Duette Architella Honeycomb shades resolved both of these issues! The top-down bottom-up configuration now allows the homeowner to achieve privacy from their neighbors by adjusting the height of these shades with the small tabs located on the top and bottom rails. T
he 4th Annual Shamrock Soccer Tournament will take place on March 20-22. This is a Southeast Alaska invitational tournament for adult soccer players. The tournament is coed and played indoors. Given that the tournament falls around St. Patrick’s Day, the event is known as the Shamrock Tournament. Six teams battle it out over six games for the chance of being crowned champions. Along with the annual 7-A-Side tournament in late May and the Competitive League tournaments in mid August, the Shamrock Tournament is organized by the Capital City Soccer League (CCSL). Increasing adult soccer opportunities in Juneau and Southeast Alaska is what the CCSL is all about. einventing Dinner, along with the theme of this year’s Home Show!
I wanted to share some great ways in which proper meal planning can save you money, time, create healthier meals and reduce waste and stress. Wouldn’t we all like that, to come home after a busy day to a plan already in place that’s easy to use and healthy. I like to think of meals in sets of threes. Being able to put similar ingredients with

multiple uses, in the time when they are at their prime, easy cooking methods that also cutdown time, like using stovetop pressure cookers, induction cooking and crockpot (or better yet an electric pressure cooker).
spoiling soon. Most people have about $500 worth of food in the typical pantry, so it’s important to account for staple ingredients (flour, sugar, rice, pasta, grains, spices) as well as fresh ingredients (dairy, produce, meat).
Buying in bulk is also a great cost saver, investing in storage containers with labels create a clean and tidy look. Here is a great tutorial for making custom transfer labels. http://thepaintedhive.net/2012/02/magic-decal-transfer-tutorial-with-free-printables/.
Always make sure you have your staples for the week, then add to the mix. Check your freezer, any seafood or meat older than four months… add that into the dinner plans.
I love using glass jars but if space is an issues the Ikea 365+ 2QT tall storage containers store a full box of cereal and have a very tiny footprint in the pantry. I like to make a general two column list of meal ideas (including enough for leftover lunches and breakfasts) and corrospond those ideas with days of the week. Sort it by protein, meal and ingredients, cooking method, check your family calender to account for any days when you won’t been home or holidays or entertaining. Take this with you when you go shopping, and also account for anything still in the fridge or pantry that needs to be eaten or

Some cuisines have very similar ingredients with only a few modifications… like a great Mexican meal can easily become amazing Thai food the next night. It’s also important to share this plan with the family, how can they participate, children as young as 3 can help grate cheese, or chop potatoes or carrots with wavy cutter, it’s important for everyone to have a chance to contribute into the plan as well as in it’s preparation. You can find the wavy cutter my daughters use on Amazon.com, at 4 and 9 they are starting to kick me out of the kitchen for some meals now… A few simple lessons in knife skills learning how to protect your fingers and a little supervision and you can prep your
mirepoix (chopped carrots, onions and celery) for meals for the whole week. Also very important to save the scraps (carrot bottoms, celery tops, onion skins,) from mirepoix in the freezer to add to stocks, they add a ton of flavor. Here is a mock meal plan for the week that I recently did. • Monday night roast chicken, roasted root vegetables and spinach salad • Tuesday Night Chicken Chilli Corn Chowder • Wednesday make a pie crust and have chilli corn chowder pot pie with the leftovers • Thursday Halibut Tacos • Friday Thai Coconut Soup (using cilantro and veggies from the tacos) and Phad Thai or Pancit • Saturday Roast Beef • Sunday French Dip Sandwiches From my table to yours, Enjoy Amber King can be emailed at accereek@ gmail.com
