Letter from the Publisher wine you aren’t supposed to drink, at least I could blame the larger than usual tummy on too many goodies. I wore my “Thanksgiving” stretchy pants on more than one occasion. For me, November is also filled with sports and the start of winter activities. Coming up with excuses as to why I wasn’t playing soccer was not that easy because for all that know me, know that I am a diehard player that wouldn’t miss it for the world… but I settled on a “sprained ankle,” that lasted a suspiciously long
I
am so excited for this November! I am thrilled that I get to celebrate a number of holidays and traditions with our newborn daughter. Thinking back about last November, I reminisce about discovering I was pregnant and all the creative ways I hid it. Hiding a pregnancy is hard during the holidays; there are parties with lots of fancy cheeses you aren’t supposed to eat and
Remember November time to the point that I’d run into teammates who would roll their eyes because they knew the real deal. And don’t get me wrong, there are many strong adventurous ladies out there who keep up their usual activities d u r i n g p r e g n a n c y, and that is i m p re s s i v e . Knowing my own activity intensity as one who doesn’t like to “take it easy” during competitive soccer games and other sports, I decided it was best to sit this one out and try my hand (and foot) at swimming and walking instead. I vividly remember going to the Public
Market last year secretly knowing I was pregnant. I recall looking at all the lovely things I could pick out for my future baby, and then eating a summer roll with spouts (oops) and then freaking out about it later. This year we are excited to share little Ari with our friends and family at Thanksgiving and various other holiday get-togethers. She loves to be entertained and smiles at most everyone. We will bring her to our soccer games, as well as to the Public Market. We are so excited about the year(s) to come and the adventures ahead of us. Happy Thanksgiving everyone, hope you have as much fun as I do. Anna Hoke is the graphic designer and owner of Southeast Living Magazine. She can be reached at anna@seakliving.com.

8585 OLD DAIRY ROAD #102 LOCATED ACROSS THE HALL FROM THE CANTON ASIAN BISTRO
Glamping, Cabin Style Editorial and Photos by Courtney Wendel
S
ometimes it’s hard to get excited about camping this time of year; it’s getting dark so early now, the fall storms aren’t exactly welcoming, and the amount of gear needed to camp in comfort is quite a bit more than the glorious summer months. But nevertheless, our local Forest Service is there to help facilitate our woodland adventures! A common colloquialism for my particular set of friends is “glamping”: the conjunction of ‘glamorous’ and ‘camping’. Because let’s face it, as many people who trek into the woods know, you don’t always want to have the feeling of super hard-core extreme camping. Sometimes you just want to pleasantly wander into the woods on a very well maintained trail, with too much food and drinks in your pack, to find a beautiful cabin, set beside a lake or atop a mountain, with a heater and fireplace, and all the luxuries of four wooden walls and a roof. I believe that if our community wasn’t so in love with cabin camping, our selection wouldn’t be nearly what it is (enter supply and demand). And I don’t mean our ‘I just summited the Mendenhall
Towers’ community. A love-her-like-a-sister friend of mine hikes into the woods with her two sons, the older being 12 and the younger being 5. Because of our cabins, she is able to take her sons out into the woods, and give the boys
experiences that only nature can give; with the peace of mind that a cabin provides. Her and her two sons, including other friends with children, have gone camping in the Cowee Meadow cabin, Peterson Lake cabin, and they have even hiked up to the Dan Moller cabin. If hiking up to Dan
Moller with a 5 year old in tow isn’t considered hard-core, then I don’t think I know the true definition of the word. I revel in how easy it is to throw some gear in my pack, put some dog food in Kiska’s doggy pack, and head out the door on my own schedule – not having to worry about other small human beings depending on me. But this is the wonderful thing about our cabins; they are located in many different areas and they cater to a wide skill set. The easier cabins to hike to are Cowee Meadow, Peterson Lake, and Windfall cabin. These trails are mostly flat, relatively short, and very user friendly. I would put Blue Muscle and Campers Cove in here too, but there is a bit more of up-and-down with some roots along the way. Trail Mix has done a lot of work recently on the start of the Peterson Lake trail, and I am excited to see what they do in the future. Cowee Meadow is probably my favorite cabin in the summer, as the field is literally a carpet of flowers and bees. The horses from Echo Ranch wander around,

and it is very close to Echo Cove shoreline. I also love Cowee in the winter, as many people cross country ski to it, and the crisp cold winter nights are a perfect backdrop for the Milky Way or the Northern Lights. Windfall is set on a beautiful lake, and sometimes swans can be seen on the far shoreline when they migrate through, as well as wolves when the lake freezes over. Bear tracks are often seen on the trail frozen in the mud in early winter, a testament to the healthy ecosystem. Dragging Thanksgiving day supper, in coolers, on sleds, to be roasted over a fire, at beautiful lake-side cabin? Yes please. Although I guess you could charter a float plane and get it all dropped off if the lake is still open, if you really wanted to go above and beyond (no pun intended). The next level up in skills I would say is the John Muir, Dan Moller, and Eagle Glacier cabins. John Muir and Dan Moller are probably my
two most-hiked-to cabins in town. John Muir is a great base camp for hunting and back country skiing and snowshoeing, as well as general shenanigans. The John Muir trail is very well used by locals, so it’s a great trail to hit up and follow some ski tracks. Dan Moller is by far the most beautiful cabin in town, with its remodel it has so many little nuances that really set it above the other cabins. The snowmachiners use this trail extensively in the winter, as it is one of the few places they can ride in town. I have only once, in all my years of hiking in the winter, met a snowmachiner that didn’t give me a wide berth, and was not what I considered respectful. I always hold on to my dogs collar when I hear them approaching (more for their piece of mind than mine), and try to move to one side of the trail to make me easier to pass. Because if I hope they are respectful, then I need to be respectful as well. The Eagle Glacier is the only cabin in town that actually faces a glacier after a steady incline and a few downed trees, and maybe that special view is worth the harder hike. It is situated along the Eagle River, and watching icebergs quietly float past the snow covered banks is a very special treat for those willing to make the journey. Klondike.
londike. It seems like everybody’s writing about it these days, but there is a reason for that. If you don’t know what “Klondike” is it’s the Klondike International Road Relay, where teams of 10 runners (or less if you want to do it that way), race along the highway from Skagway, Alaska to Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada. The race has been around for a number of years and there are legendary people who run it and exciting things that happen along its course. Although, what happens at Klondike, stays at Klondike so unless you participate, you may never really know what Klondike is really like. I was first introduced to Klondike when I moved to Skagway from St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands about two decades ago. My friends from the islands had spent their summers in Skagway, which admittedly, I’d never heard of, but after hearing about it for six months, I thought it was going to be heaven. And, to the young me, it was a little bit of heaven, beauty, scenery,
forget things, like passports, teammates, other things we need to complete our race. But since this is a rare weekend away from our kids and families, we want to make the most of coming home with smiles on our faces and fond memories.
quirky people and lots of adventures to be had. It was a summer of great fun. A group of my friends ran Klondike that year but I didn’t think I was a distance runner at the time, so I sat out. I think it was about a year later when I received a letter from one of my Skagway running pals along with an article about him running his entire leg in Converse All Stars. I promised myself one day that I was going to run that race... And if ever I thought I wasn’t going to finish, I’d think of Peter running all that way in those clunky high tops.
This year, I ran leg one and everything went quite smoothly. My team is organized so legs one through four share a car and run support for each other so we cheered on our leg two runner and then our leg three runner and at the checkpoint between legs three and four we stumbled on a little slice of heaven, what we called the “Hot Dog Tent.” During legs one and two the weather was pretty good but leg 3 got to be a bit cold and there were murmurs of “this is the coldest it’s ever been” which I doubt, but it was cold. Back to what’s important here, the Hot Dog Tent. In the cold of the night with the rain beating down, I didn’t want to even get out of the car to properly support my team, but I knew I had to. My teammate said “there is a tent with hotdogs and it’s warm in there.” I thought she was just pulling my leg to get me out of the car but I followed anyway.
Well, in 2014 I was a Klondike virgin, but I ran leg 8. I’m still not a great distance runner but I completed my leg and I’m lucky enough to be on a team that is more concerned with having fun than winning the race. My team continues to focus on fun By Susan Stopher and sometimes that means we Stopher Construction At first, I thought it was a mi-

rage. It had been cold all along leg three and I would say it was not my best support leg. I could have done better. We approach a wall tent and opened the door and inside it’s all toasty warm like there was a wood burning stove and it smelled of hot dogs. One would think that I enjoy hotdogs from all of this talk of hotdogs, but while I don’t consume them, I do find comfort in the smell of them, and the warmth, well that was amazing too. In the Hot Dog Tent there were bowls of candy, coffee, oranges and, well, hotdogs and it was all free. The Hot Dog Tent was just what we needed at the end of leg three especially for those who were living through what must have been “their coldest Klondike ever.” I looked around in awe of what I saw, but I didn’t take anything at all. I took what I needed from there in my thoughts, the little bit of heaven that was The Hot Dog Tent lived on there. After the race ended, I heard that the tent was circus themed and that there were clowns. Somehow in the cold of the night I missed all of that which was good, because I needed to go to sleep after my teammate completed leg four and I didn’t need to have nightmares of clowns chasing me. The rest of Klondike went pretty smoothly this year. No missing passports, everybody

met their runners and support seemed to go smoothly. After a few mishaps the year before, my team may have a bit of a reputation for having some, shall I say, excitement. We went off to the dance and most of our friends on other teams seemed to be pleasantly surprised at how smoothly our Klondike race went, but that was not to be the end of it. We departed Whitehorse late Sunday morning to head back to Skagway to catch our ferry. Three cars departed with three to four teammates each, total of 10 people.

We decided to make a quick pit stop in Carcross because there was a great coffee shop where several of my teammates had spent some time in the wee hours of the morning during the race, it was for all practical purposes, their Hot Dog Tent. I went to get a coffee and we all took restroom breaks, and probably stayed in Carcross for 30 minutes. One of the cars loaded up and took off. Then my car loaded up and a teammate from another vehicle came over and instructed us to go straight to the ferry terminal upon arrival
in Skagway. We agreed and watched her walk off to the restroom. We took off. Car three took off. We accidentally left a teammate in Carcross. We got her back safely and we all had a good laugh about it. While our team is not perfect in every way, it is perfect in the way that counts. We can laugh at ourselves, we have fun, we enjoy our time away from home and we make the best of things good or bad. We will never take home the Klondike title. Wait, is there even a Klondike title? Do people actually win this race?

LET ME KNOW HOW I CAN
wondered, I still wonder, why didn’t more people show up more often to do something as simple as walk the dog?
help….
With all the changes in our lives and in the lives of people around us, I’ve been thinking about how hard it is to weather life alone. When I was eight months pregnant with our first daughter, my husband was in a mountain biking accident that put him in Harborview Medical Center for nearly a month and left him unable to walk on his own until she was three months old. A difficult emergency C-section and post-partum depression meant that as much as I was truly grateful for the fact that my husband was healing and that I was holding the most precious gift imaginable in my new daughter – it also felt like I was often on the verge of a complete breakdown. It was the non-stop little things that seemed unbearable. We were living in Washington at the time, and my family came from Alaska as often as they could, and stayed as long as they could. My very pregnant sister came from Hawaii, and helped at the hospital, and when he came home, pushing my husband in his wheel chair almost 2 miles each way just to get him outside. Many times my childhood friend, Tonja, drove the nearly four hours from Port Angeles, often bringing her own kids. She’d tuck my daughter into the ergo and catch up my dishes, do laundry, stock my fridge, prep meals and more. I, we, could not
have survived without their constant support. In between their visits it was hard and it was lonely and only a few people showed up on a few occasions to stand in those seemingly insignificant gaps that threatened to undo us. People would call, or see me and say, “let me know how I can help” and I’d smile and say “thanks”. For some reason, it still just never quite feels like you can really ask anyone to do anything. It never really feels like you should ask; it always feels as if you should be able to just do it all yourself.
Thing is, I am not exempt from the same lack of action on behalf of others. I can look back on the life events of friends and family and see that often I did not take the opportunities to stand in the gap for people I cared about too. Why? Is life really that busy? Did I think it didn’t matter? Did I just not notice? So as Thanksgiving approaches, here is what I am resolved to celebrate: authentic gratefulness not just for those who showed up consistently but for the few who showed up when they did – because every single person who stood in any of our gaps made it possible for us to survive that period of struggle.
Still, I was completely overwhelmed, so pride was crushed and I actually did specifically ask different people to help with one task - walking I am resolved to practice that the dog. A couple people did, a few gratefulness by looking for times. The thing is, an athletic dog opportunities to stand in the gap like we have needs more than just a for others. We can’t say “yes” to quick potty break; he needs a good every need, but we can say “yes” to run or long walk regularly, let alone some. For Thanksgiving this year, I over a span of four month plus some. encourage you to not offer an open Believe it or not, because we lived in statement such as, “Let me know if a fourth floor condo, just getting him I can help.” Instead, get specific – downstairs to potty at least twice a day By Dr. Summer Beattie, ND ask if you can stop by the grocery was challenging. It was unnerving to store, run to the post office, tidy the leave my husband alone when he couldn’t walk kitchen, drop off a meal or pay for takeout. Offer and I certainly wasn’t going to leave him alone to grab coffee or run an errand. For heaven’s sake with the baby to run the dog. The point is, I – offer to walk the dog! In casual conversation,

ask what challenges the person is facing in their given situation. It will offer you clues to how you may be able to ease that burden in a tangible and regular way for as long as you can. They may brush you off, so ask someone close to them. It is difficult to ask for help – so don’t wait for them to ask; they may never. Just act. We all need a community, a home, that supports us in big and small ways, and we get that support first by giving it. Remember too, that the people who sometimes seem the most strong and most capable, actually need you too. Happy giving this holiday!

READY TO
paint?
HOW TO PICK THE RIGHT
S
that start to go into a more taupe color. And if you’re just looking at one color by itself, it’s hard to tell what the undertones are. So gather the different color swatches of grays — or whatever color you’re auditioning — and put them next to each other. By Regina DiLauro-Fay That’s when you can really see their undertones. You’ll say, “Oh, this gray looks really green next to that gray.”
ometimes it feels as if picking just the right shade of paint can be an elusive task. So many t o choose from, where does one begin? Some common question asked and answered. If you know you want to paint a room, but don’t have a clue about picking paint colors, where do you start? A great way to start is to look at a favorite piece of art or your clothing and see if there’s a color theme. You may not put that exact color on the wall, but you can see what colors you are drawn to. When it comes to selecting color, aren’t there other important factors to consider, such as how much light the room gets? It really does depend on how much light is in the room. If you’ve got a space with really good natural lighting, you’ve got a lot more options. With rooms that don’t have a lot of lighting or windows, avoid muddy colors, like forest green or deep plum. They tend to make it feel very dreary and cave-like. So for light challenged rooms, go lighter and cleaner with more crisp colors that don’t have a lot of brown or gray undertones in them. And how do you detect those undertones? It seems like such a mystery… Gray is a very popular color right now, but there are so many different shades. There are some that look more blue, some that go more green and there are warm grays
That makes a lot of sense. But then how do you know if you want a cooler or warmer shade of a hue?
around the space, because if you’re going to paint all four walls in the room, the color is going to look different on each wall depending on the light and time of day. Another reason why it’s great to paint samples onto poster board is that you can see where you’ve painted that sample, even after three coats. You don’t want to affect that final finish. How do I pick the sheen? Flatter finishes hide imperfections. The disadvantage is that they’re harder to clean. So ceilings are great for flat, because they’re not going to get dirty. For walls, if you’re a little messy or if you have kids or pets, then I would at least do eggshell finish, the next sheen up. It will still hide imperfections pretty well, but you can wipe it up easier than flat. But in rooms like kitchens or with anything that gets a lot of abuse and use, like doors and trim, you want to use a semi-gloss, because it’s more wipeable and cleanable. In rooms
color
with high humidity, like a bathroom, use a semi-gloss to protect from moisture. Remember always start with colors you love! Painting is a quick way to change your space and make it look new again. Don’t be afraid of a color, it will be lighter than it appears on the paint chip. So go for it! A finished, beautiful space with all the essentials is the perfect start to a long future together. Share your cohabitation adventures with us by tagging your photos www. facebook.com/reginadilaurofaydesigns. Regina DiLauro-Fay has over 15 years of design experience. Her company, DF Designs, specializes in Interior Design, Home Staging & Color Consultanting. She can be reached at (843)906-9663 or reginadfdesigns@gmail.com.
Think about what the space is going to be used for. Cooler colors are more relaxing and soothing, so if it’s a bedroom or bathroom, I would look to more cooler colors. Warmer colors are more energizing. They get your heart rate up a little faster, so those are good for kitchens, dining rooms and living rooms. But living rooms could go either way, depending on whether you want a relaxing feel or you entertain a lot. One home decor trend that’s still going strong is white rooms. Do you have any favorite whites? I like cooler whites that have a touch of gray in them. But if you are going to use a warm white, find one that have the tiniest touch of warmth to it and not too much yellow or peach. Again, the trick is to put a range of white swatches together, and you’ll pick up on the undertones. Once you narrow down your choices, you still have to make sure it works in your room with the colors in it. How do I know it’s the right color for my room? Test your color in the room that will be painted. Get poster board or scrap pieces of drywall — a good size piece is at least two feet by two feet — and paint two coats. Then you can move your board W W W.

Fall Harvest Onion-Thyme Jam Makes about 1 cup

Melt the butter and olive oil in a heavy-bottomed pot. Add the onions, thyme, bay leaf, garlic, 1 teaspoon salt, and a few cracks of pepper. Cover and cook over medium-low heat for 20 minutes. es that people remember, from textures and colors and foods that preserve the last fleeting moments of fall. Until the frost is on the pumpkin and the alpenglow is slowly making its way down the mountains, it’s time to come inside and share a meal with great friends. Since my nine year old daughter has declared she is a vegetarian, we’ve been cooking a few more veggie based meals (we already did 2-3 a week) and she’s trying out foods she would have never previously, so it’s been great fun to play “stump the checkout line” of trying to make them guess our ingredients, is it rutabaga or kolharabi, and which squash is that? So in the spirit of trying some new side dishes or an amazing tymey onion jam... (bacon is so 2013, might I add). Here are three great recipes, grab some friends, a great glass of porter or single malt to sip on in the kitchen and cook away. .COM
In a large bowl, whisk together the orange zest and juice, cumin seeds, vinegar, olive oil, and sugar. Peel and shred the carrots, beets, and celery root and add to the bowl. (Do the celery root last as it’s prone to browning when exposed to air; see peeling advicehere.)Toss to combine. Season to taste with salt and pepper. For best flavor, refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving.
Brussel Sprout, Avocado and Pepita Salad Finely grated zest of 1 lemon 1 1/2Tbsp lemon juice 1/2 tsp quality Dijon mustard 3 Tbsp EVO (extra-virgin olive oil) or avocado oil if you have it Coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 pound organic brussels sprouts, trimmed, leaves separated, raw or lightly steamed 2 Tbsp pepitas (pumpkin seeds),lightly toasted and seasoned 1 avocado, thin sliced
Whisk lemon juice and mustard in a small bowl. Gradually add oil, whisking to emulsify, and season with salt and pepper. Toss dressing with brussel sprouts and pumpkin seeds. Gently stir in avocado and salt to taste. From my harvest table to yours, Enjoy
