BEFORE & AFTER

Bauer/Clifton Interiors is an interior design firm located in Juneau, Alaska. Jeremy Bauer and Jason Clifton, the principals of Bauer/Clifton Interiors, are designers that share a passion for creating stylish, organic, and contemporary spaces.

his project not only required an interior design for the new home addition, but it also included refacing the exterior of the home as well. Since the original style of the home didn’t quite fit within its wilderness setting, nor did it satisfy the clients’ desire for a more rustic home, we opted to incorporate natural elements and a new color palette to transform this home. After analyzing the Architect’s plans for the home addition, we knew we needed to address the grand scale of the final product. In order to visually minimize the volume of this home, we incorporated natural cedar shakes on the dormer bump out and also the bridge between the two structures. This not only helped break up the horizontal lines of the siding, but also added texture to the exterior as well. Natural cedar was then carried into the post and beam design of the wrap around porch and decking. New espresso colored roofing was chosen to serve as the element that tied the existing structure in with the new. This

a larger, and more inviting space for the main entry. The natural colors, textures and materials now blend beautifully into the Alaskan forest setting and have a cohesive feeling inside and out; whether viewing from a comfy position in the home or from the approach to the home.

dark, neutral color provides the needed contrast between the siding materials and also ties into the color of the window frames as well. Locally sourced rock was the perfect solution for incorporating an additional natural material and also a way to beef up the corner supports of the porch roof. This dramatic addition also served as the inspiration for the main body color. A stormy-sage hue was pulled from the rock and accented with a brick red tone for the color of the soffits, fascias, and window trim.

One of our last changes to the home was the addition of the entry. This change helped reinforce our post and beam design and helped break up the long horizontal line of the original front

Kitchen Collectables – at the Public Market – By Peter Metcalfe

T

his year marks the 30th AlaskaJuneau Public Market, a Christmas retail event held at Centennial Hall every Thanksgiving weekend since 1983. Each year, 175 or more vendors from all over Alaska and the Pacific Northwest participate in the Public Market, and each year roughly 20 percent of the vendors present for the first time. A rough calculation indicates we have hosted nearly 1,000 individual vendors over the last thirty years. With every Public Market it seems a theme or fad develops; sometimes it’s hand soaps made with local ingredients such as glacial flour and wild herbs. Another year it might be scented candles, carved woodwork, or wildberry jams and syrups. The theme of the 2012 Public Market is “kitchen collectables,” one-of-a-kind

items that would be useful in equipping or decorating kitchens. Jim and Darcy Michener of Sitka return for the second year in a row to present “Alaska Pure Sea Salt” distilled from the waters of Southeast Alaska, a product ideal for soups and baked dishes. They offer three variations on their brand of flake sea salt including blueberry, alder smoke, and original. The Barker family of Palmer will make their first appearance this year to present the products they make at their Earth Works Farm, which includes a hearty Alaskan breakfast: muesli cereal made from a combination of rolled oats, barley flakes, and dried fruits. The Barker’s primary products are moisturizing creams derived from the honey and beeswax they collect from their own hives.

Another first timer, Juneau’s Denise Elston of Alaska Gourmet Oils, will present her locally produced infused cooking oils at the Public Market Annex (the JACC). In the same row of booths, Bonnie Herbold, also of Juneau, will, for the second year in a row, offer her unique brand of olive oil and balsamic vinegar, products that proved highly popular in 2011. These products are not just delicious cooking aids, but lovely to look at — fine additions to the kitchen table. Renee and Brian Pierce, also from Sitka, offer a line of wildberry and kelp products harvested from Southeast Alaska’s rainforest and the waters of Sitka Sound. The Pierces have participated in the Public Market since 1999. Eagle River Knife Co., owned by the Bodley family of Eagle River, will return for their eleventh appearance in 13 years to sell

their unique brand of chef-caliber knives, as well as ulus and fillet knives. No serious cook should go without a 7” Santoku Knife or 10” Chef ’s Knife — sturdy, well balanced, and made, like all their products, from the highest quality proprietary steel. Veteran Public Market vendors Ed Norton of Haines and Dean Snook of Huston (Alaska), and newcomer Mark Walker of Juneau, will present their beautifully crafted and useful handmade wood products ranging from artquality serving trays to beautiful

In the Annex, Al Tingley of Juneau

will host the Thunder Mountain High School wood working class and their line of kitchen-friendly products. Look for the glass fusion tableware of Robyn Marriott, a veteran vendor who returned to the Public Market last year after a four-year sojourn in the Lower 48. Other glass fusion products will include platters, plates, and wall hangings by first timers Linda Chase of Skagway and Tomilyn Clark of Anchorage whose unique designs in glass would brighten any kitchen. Potters include Joyce Pane, Jeremy Kane, and Dave Riccio of Juneau, Patrick and Debbie Laws of Ketchikan, and Betty Bell of Milton, Washington.

For the rustic kitchen, consider the chainsaw art of Thorne Bay’s Guy Lane, formerly of Kenai. A review the Alaska Bear Factory product line reveals art-quality work including small planters, wall hangings, and decorative figures appropriate for kitchen counters, cabinets, and shelves. And finally, to add the holiday spirit to your home, look for ornaments offered by Carol Marchant of Eagle River, Sandy Wade of Ketchikan, Cindy Wortman-Zeil of Craig, and life-long Juneau

Steps for a Smooth Mortgage Process

O

ften I am asked if there are steps a borrower can take to make their loan process a bit smoother. As my article last month By Vickie Perry indicated, paperwork and documentation are key factors, but there are other steps one can take to ensure a smoother process. Below are a few suggestions to assist in a more pleasurable home buying process. Choose a Licensed, Local Lender: Applying and being approved for a mortgage is a HUGE financial step for most borrowers. Don’t leave such an important financial decision up to an internet lender that you do not know. If a lender says their loan program is “nocost” or promise unbelievable rates. The time-proven phase of “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is” definitely rings true. Be sure you are working with a licensed lender who is familiar with Alaska properties, especially properties in Southeast Alaska. Be sure to ask for referrals from friends, family as well as your realtor. Real Estate Agents are excellent resources for assistance with choosing a lender because they work with a variety of lenders on a daily basis. Disclose Up Front: The law requires your lender to fully disclose various aspects of your loan, as a borrower you need to do the same. Be sure to tell your lender if you owe or receive child support, if your down payment will be a gift from family, if you are self employed or partner in a business, and the list goes on. A lender has no way of knowing your entire situation and unexpected changes in income, debt, source of down payment, ect. may

8

W W W.

cause delays, or even loan denial. Understand Your Numbers: A reputable lender will give you a Cost Estimate. This estimate will reflect all fees associated with your loan, as well as breaks down the down payment required, the loan term, the preliminary interest rate, and the monthly payment including taxes and insurances. It is important a borrower understands each component of the estimate so there are no surprises when it comes time to close. If a lender provides an estimate for a home prices at $250,000, but the price ends up being $275,000, expect the figures to increase. Prepare Your Paperwork: The basic paperwork required for a mortgage is the same for most borrowers however each borrower’s financial situation is different. To get started, a borrower will need to provide: 30 days worth of paystubs, 2 months bank statements, and 2 years of tax returns including W-2s/1099s, business and personal. There are loan programs that require additional paperwork, and other that require less. Example: If you are receiving and/or paying child support, a divorce decree and/or child support order will be required to document the amount. Keep Your Money in Place: The bank statements provided to your lender will be scrutinized for erroneous deposits. Any deposit that does not correspond with your standard paycheck will have to be sourced and documented. Transfers from

SEAKLIVING

.COM

one bank account to another require documentation. If you cash out a retirement account to assist with your purchase, you will need to provide a statement showing the funds available, as well as the statement showing withdraw of retirement funds. Before you transfer, deposit, or withdraw, consult your lender. Keep Your Debt Load to a Minimum: Borrowers are required to disclose if they have applied for additional credit. This might include a credit card, auto or boat purchase, essentially anything that incurs a debt. To be direct, don’t do it. A lender retains the right to re-pull your credit during the approval process and any newly opened accounts for have to be documented. The new accounts could potentially reduce a borrower’s credit score, as well as change the debt loan. Either change could have a negative impact on final approval. Don’t Switch Employment: A lender prequalifies a borrower based on their current employment status. Future employment doesn’t weigh into the qualifying

equation. A borrower’s employer will be requested to complete a Verification of Employment. If the VOE indicates temporary employment or that employment is coming to an end, the loan will be pended for further explanation. Additionally, the employer will be contacted within 10 days of closing to verify the borrower is still employed. If you enter the process as an open book prepared to document, explain, ask questions, and be asked questions, you will be ahead of the game. My biggest piece of advice is to contact your lender before you make any financial decision while you are amidst the mortgage process. Believe me when I say, your lender wants your loan to go just a smoothly as you do. Vickie Perry (#AK195996 / #AK167729) is Branch Manager of Residential Mortgage, LLC, in Juneau. I am using these tools in the harsh Southeast Alaska weather and some tools I’m using every day, which often leads to me continually replacing them. I keep a certain amount of special tools at my house, homeowner tools, which the wife says I can’t take on the job with me so she can have some tools in case something comes up at home. Usually I sneak off with a few of those tools designated for the use around the home and I hear about it later. Often people aren’t sure which tools to buy for around their home so I have put together a list of tools necessary for a homeowner and even a renter to have around the home, just in case a picture needs to be hung, a cabinet door adjusted, or a shower door caulked. 1. CORDLESS DRILL: This is the first essential tool in the home-

owner’s tool kit. A cordless drill can be used for many projects or fix-it items around the home. It can be used to drive screws like a loose door hinge or to pre-drill a hole for a curtain rod. Cordless drills come in a wide variety of sizes or volts but for something needed only on occasion and not for everyday use there are plenty of 12-volt cordless drills on the market for the homeowner. If you foresee woodworking projects in your the future, I would suggest something a little hardier with a longer lasting battery in the 18-volt range.

2. ASSORTED SCREWDRIVERS: Having an assortment of screwdrivers around the home always a good idea. I would buy a multi-pack with assorted sizes and types (Phillips and regular). I can’t count the number of times I have needed a Phillips head screw driver to adjust a cabinet hinge or a small electronics screw driver to put batteries in a kids toy. 3. TASK LIGHT OR FLASHLIGHT: Lighting is always handy when you need to enter the crawlspace, attic or if the electricity does go out. You will

JIM KELLY

also want to be sure to keep extra batteries on hand as well. With our long dark winters, a task light that can be plugged in is also essential. 4. 16 OZ. HAMMER: Make sure you buy a good quality hammer. It is practical for a lot of things like hanging a picture to pulling nails. A hammer can also be used to demo

things. Like every tool, hammers can be very specialized. One visit to The Hammer Museum in Haines will show just how specialized a hammer can be. I have many I use

throughout the day from a finish hammer, a framing hammer, a bigger framing hammer, to Moe (my 4 lb. persuasive sledge hammer). But a 16 oz. hammer is all a homeowner should need to keep around the house, since it can handle just about anything.

and Pliers: These are necessary to have around the house along with those Allen wrenches. Be sure you purchase a set with both metric and standard sizes. They are good useful in many tasks. I usually need some kind of pliers or wrenches when l dealing with plumbing or heating items. 6. UTILITY KNIFE: This can be handy when you need to cut drywall or for a variety of household uses. 7. LADDERS: A necessity when it comes to reaching high objects like light bulbs or tackling a painting project. 8. CLAMPS: These can act as an added hand or hold something together while the glue sets. I often use clamps when working on projects alone, giving me an extra hand when needed. 9. PAINT BRUSH: Necessary for paint touch-up or projects. 10. HANDSAW: A simple one with a wooden handle. 11. SMALL SQUARE 12. WIRE CUTTERS 13. PRY BAR

You probably don’t need all of these items from day one of home ownership or when renting, but this is meant to serve as a guide. Most people don’t need a full set of power tools, especially if you don’t know how or if you don’t feel comfortable using them. This starter guide should help you get through necessary day-to-day projects and as you develop your home repair skills, other tools may be necessary for certain tasks.

many things for which we should give thanks. Of course, after soaking in rain all summer, it can be difficult to remember to be grateful. Here are a few things that I think we should be thankful for as a community:

I am thrilled that a new grocery store came to Juneau and has taken over A&P. For a while we lived with hope that New Sagaya or Trader Joe’s would fill the empty space. That was an innocent, happy time. And although those dreams have been shattered, we will take what we can get. I am glad to see many of the A&P staff still at work in the new store. I am also happy to see the shelves stocked once again. It was rough for a while. Town and Douglas residents really struggled as A&P wound down their inventory. Many found it easier to return to the barter system amongst friends and neighbors than travel all the way to Fred Meyers for cinnamon. Even those who don’t live in Douglas or Downtown should be thankful for Foodland IGA, after-all, you don’t need the extra influx of spicedeprived townsfolk into the valley stores on a Saturday morning.

fun stuff for younger kids. They aren’t allowed on the big slides and I heard that instead the little kids could play under a structure that dumps buckets of water on their heads. Who wants buckets of water dumped on their head? It turns out, little kids do! And when they are tired of the water on their own heads, they could watch you get water dumped on your head forever! This month the New Pool is offering day camp during Thanksgiving break for kids age 6-12. Campers can choose one, two or three days of camp from November 19-21. For $25 a day, 8:30 to noon the camp features aerobics, arts and crafts, guest speakers, outdoor activities, snacks and water activities. I don’t have a 6-12 year old but if I did, I would sign him or her up immediately. For those who can’t make it to camp or just had so much fun in the morning they want to come back, the New Pool is adjusting its swim schedule to 2:45-4:45 and 5-8pm November 19-21.

“I love the idea of Aqua Zumba because you do all the moves under water and no one can see your mistakes.”

The best thing about the new store, as far as I’m concerned, is that it is also called “Foodland.” A&P was Foodland before it was A&P and I, along with many other Juneau residents, never stopped calling it “Foodland,” and thank goodness! If I dedicate too much of my brain to supermarket names who knows what else will be lost? I might just call all the other stores in town “Foodland” too to make more room.

The New Foodland

I like to call the Diamond Park Aquatic Center “The New Pool.” It’s easier to say. And I LOVE the New Pool. I always feel like an amazing mom for driving the 10 minutes and paying the $6.00 it costs for my daughter and me to swim. The New Pool has had a ripple effect throughout town and now the downtown pool is far less crowded and other facility rentals have more availability since many birthday parties are now held at the New Pool. Before the New Pool opened I remember worrying that there wasn’t much

The New Pool isn’t just good for kids though. They also offer Aqua Zumba three nights a week for patrons 16 years old and over. I love the idea of Aqua Zumba because you do all the moves under water and no one can see your mistakes. I am currently in negotiations with friends to get them into the pool and zumba-ing with me. If you’re already sold, the New Pool is also offering a PFD special on their annual passes until November 15th.

Curb-side recycling

I love curb-side recycling. I love that it’s co-mingled and I no longer have to sort the recycling. It’s just so easy. And I love not going to the recycling center. I hated the shame of that place. We used to show up with a huge tub of beer bottles and hope everyone would assume we had a party. I used to try to speak loudly to my husband about how great the party was while we were unloading. His confusion only added

“As a community too we should be thankful that we still have small local businesses like this one where we can get expert service and a high quality products.” to the ploy. Then we became parents and suddenly hosting a party so raucous that one of us didn’t even remember it wasn’t any better than the truth, which was we were lazy and somehow co-habitated with growing mountains of glass, aluminum and cardboard for months rather than deal with it. With curb-side recycling however, our days of shame are over! We hold our heads high every other Wednesday when everyone on the block sees our recycle can and knows we are the kind of virtuous people who care deeply about the environment. Sometimes I am tempted to yell to my husband as he hauls the can out to the curb“Aren’t all those organic milk cartons heavy?” but I resist. No need to show off.

The New Bakeries Downtown

Maybe I shouldn’t be thankful for the new crop of great bakeries downtown. They are a daily torment to my will power. However, the Wild Oven Bakehouse, which is located just feet from my office under the Observatory Book Store on Franklin and 3rd, has many healthy bread options in addition to cinnamon rolls and amazing cookies the size of my daughter’s head. They even offer spelt bread on Fridays for anyone whose wheat allergies have previously kept them out of the bakery scene. B’s Bistro and Bakery is another welcome addition downtown, located just off Franklin and 2nd. The bistro offers a fun, funky atmosphere with a full lunch menu and daily cupcakes. They also do cupcake special orders with a discount on orders of 12 or more and carry Red Onion tea and spices in their Tea and Spice Emporium. B’s does a great job changing up their menu and bringing out new lunch specials so it pays to check out their website: www. bsbakeryandbistro.blogspot.com/. The pot –pies sell out early so if the website puts you in the mood for one,

don’t procrastinate! Sadly B’s and Wild Oven are both closed on Mondays. The Rookery Cafe, on Seward Street next to Shoefly has been around for a while now but I don’t want to leave it out of my list of welcome additions to the downtown morning coffee break. In addition to a full espresso bar, fine pastries, cookies, croissants and cakes, the Rookery also has lunch items such as wraps, pasta salads, pizzas, paninis and Alaska Brewing Company beers. They change up their artwork regularly which is great because the high quality food and drinks can cause a line to form. The Rookery is open Monday through Friday from 7am to 6pm and Saturday from 9am to 6 pm.

Valley Paint Center

I have played on the Valley Paint women’s outdoor soccer team for about 12 years. Last month was the first time I have bought paint in Juneau. I was happy to take my business to Valley Paint after years of cheering their name. I am certainly glad that I did. The selection at the store was great. I was able to find all the painting accessories I needed in addition to the paint and I was helped right away by the owner. I really had no idea what I needed but he was able to patiently talk me through the world of primers and paint rollers. I thanked the owner at the store for sponsoring our team. As a community too we should be thankful that we still have small local businesses like this one where we can get expert service and a high quality products. Valley Paint is located at 8461 Old Dairy Road next to Juneau Urgent Care and is open Monday through Friday 8:00 am -5:30 pm and 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturdays.

This year the event will take place on November 17, and will be held at Centennial Hall. For more information email the Alaskan Brewing Company at info@alaskanbeer.com.

Turkey Amber’s Thanksgiving Turkey Brine

Amber’s Thanksgiving Turkey

2.5 gal water

4T dried thyme

24 ounces honey

2 c kosher salt

1 head of garlic

24 ounces maple syrup

1c sugar

5 allspice berries

2 bay leaves

4 juniper berries

Rinse the turkey inside and out with cold tap water. Reserve the neck and specialty meats for pan gravy. Set the turkey in the brine, making sure that the turkey is fully immersed in the brine. Place a weight on top of the turkey to make sure it is always cov-

1 stick butter, room temperature 2 teaspoons chopped garlic 1 teaspoon chopped

Being the most important part of the traditional meal here is how I brine and roast a turkey. The biggest adaptation to turkey brining is that under no circumstances can you stuff the bird! After brining you can roast, bbq, smoke, or deep fry especially if you are trying to cook your entire meal with one oven! Turkey that has been deep fried is actually the healthiest way to eat it, since the large surface area of the skin seals in all the juices, rather than basting for hours in the oven. Make sure to start defrosting your turkey with enough time to brine… usually have defrosting by Saturday night before Thanksgiving. Depending on the size it will take a few days, make sure to keep cool during the defrost. In a large stockpot, bring the water, herbs, seasonings and salt to a boil. Lower to a simmer and stir in the honey and maple syrup until well blended. Turn off heat and allow cooling to room temperature.

ered with brine. (add water if necessary) Marinate for at least 4 hours to overnight in cool and protected area, depending on the weight of the turkey, in the refrigerator. If temperatures are cold enough (usually in Northern SE) you can brine your turkey in a unheated garage or outside as long as it’s covered and fully protected overnight from the elements. I often use my canning pressure cooker for this job since I can weigh it down easily and seal the lid to prevent spilling and sloshing of the brine out of the kitchen.

Turkey Stock

fresh rosemary leaves 2 teaspoons chopped fresh sage leaves 2 apples, quartered and cored

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. In a shallow roasting pan, place the carrots, celery and onions. Remove turkey from brine. Mix together the butter, garlic, chopped rosemary, and sage to make a compound butter. Using your hands, loosen to the skin from the breast by gently inserting your fingers between the skin and the flesh, (make sure to remove any jewelry) and have a stack of paper towels ready nearby. Rub the compound butter underneath the skin. Insert the apples, onions, and whole rosemary and sage into the cavity of the turkey. I like to add whole cloves and a bay leaf to my apples and onion. Place the turkey over the vegetables,

(good quality!!)

1 cup cubed celery

1/2 cup roughly chopped carrots

1 cup cubed onions

4 cups turkey stock, recipe follows

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 sprigs rosemary 5 peppercorns

1/2 cup white wine

Water, to cover

1/2 cup Madeira wine

Add the carrots, onions, celery, rosemary and peppercorns. Cover with cold

Once turkey is almost done prepare for making pan gravy, this will be one of your last steps before dinner is served…

I grew up in a large family where Thanksgiving was held in high esteem, you had to earn your right to be part of the kitchen crew. It was a great day full of friends family, football and feasting. Being farther removed from my Puget Sound roots I do my best to bring the same traditions to my children and loved ones and it’s always a huge event (even when I try to scale it down, just doesn’t happen)

Olive oil, for drizzling

Turkey Pan Gravy 1 cup cubed carrots

water by 4-inches. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer, and simmer for 2 hours, adding a little more water, if necessary. Skim any scum that rises to the surface of the stock and discard. Strain the stock. Use immediately, or cool and refrigerate for up to 4 days.

3 sprigs sage

Transfer turkey to a platter and allow cooling. Meanwhile, make the stock for gravy and stuffing.

chopped celery

Heat a saucepan over high heat. When the pan is hot, add the olive oil and heat. Add the neck and giblets and cook until browned all over, about 7 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and deglaze with the port. Return the pan to the heat and cook until the port is almost completely evaporated, about 10 minutes.

2 rosemary sprigs

If the skin gets too dark during roasting, tent with foil. Check temperature in meaty area of thigh but avoid bones (they will give a false reading)

1 cup roughly chopped onions

1/2 cup roughly

1 onion, peeled and quartered

breast-side up, in the roasting pan. Tuck the wings back and under the turkey. Using kitchen twine, tie the legs together. This will make a compact shape and will create a great presentation. Drizzle the turkey with olive oil and rub it into the skin. Roast the turkey to at least 165 degrees F in the breast, about 2 1/2 hours. Or 12-15 minutes per pound if using a larger bird.

Giblets and neck from your turkey 1/2 cup port wine

Recipes

1 sprig thyme

Beurre manie (2 ounces butter mixed with 2 ounces flour until it forms a soft dough)

2 sprigs parsley

Salt and pepper

Transfer turkey to a platter and allow to rest at least 15 minutes before carving. Meanwhile, prepare the pan gravy. Tilt the pan and skim as much fat as possible off the juice with a spoon. Set the pan on 2 burners set on medium heat. Deglaze roasting pan with white wine and Madeira. Scrape the bottom of the pan to loosen any brown bits. Reduce

Add in my first daughter’s birthday that weekend and well you can see how I spent my “nesting period” cooking a meal for a small army till we had exhausted all Turkey leftover possibilities and just wanted the bird out of the house!

until only a quarter remains. Add the turkey stock, thyme and parsley. Bring to a boil and strain into a saucepan. Bring back to a boil, skim and lower to a simmer. Whisk in the beurre manie until well incorporated and continue to cook until gravy has thickened. Season, to taste, with salt and pepper.

while cooking is a must! Happy Feastings to you and your families! Amber King can be followed on Twitter at akamber or emailed at accereek@gmail.com

The Art in all People

I

t’s quickly become 5 years since we moved to Juneau. My wife, Mona who lived in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands most By Kevin Wickenburg of her life moved here for change. I moved here for love. I have met many artistic minded people here, I believe that there is something about Juneau that allows creativity to come forward in all of us. After seeing the beautiful Tlingit artwork, seems like it’s always been that way. I have seen Mona get her GED, get a scholarship for a computer training program, work her first corporate job, learn to operate a table saw, design a website for our new internet business and learn to sew. My work of art is the art of healing through massage therapy. I practice here in Juneau but I also practiced in the Virgin Islands. Aside from the obvious sunshine difference, the culture and simple language are different too. Massage Therapy helped me transcend these differences and I feel as though I blend in very well. In St. Thomas we drove on the left side of the road and we could not get by

without greeting whomever we came across at all times of the day. In the Virgin Islands the ladies are proudly plus size, there is no size two. In Juneau, we got some looks after introducing the Fat Lady pressure point tool but the tool looks like a beautiful full Caribbean lady. We thought of naming it the moderately overweight pressure point tool, but it didn’t have the same ring to it. The tool works great for Repetitive Motion Injury symptoms, it helps loosen up the mouse arm from long hours of repetitive clicking and strainful typing on the keyboard, and TMJ (pain in the jaw) symptoms. Some time back, I had given a palm roller to an elder lady who was a massage client. The roller was for her stiff knitting hands. She used it to roll her palms, which she said was

very effective. The next time she stopped by for her treatment she told me that she was away to get knee replacement surgery and that the palm roller helped her recovery. She used it to massage her knee and said that it “worked out the gristle.” She also used a phrase from the early 20th century calling the palm roller the “Bees Knee’s.” We added another palm roller to make a pair and now have our latest product “Knee Bees.” Recently, a nice man came to our table at a local arts and crafts fair and told Mona that he needed one of our hand painted, hard wood foot roller’s to make his dogs happy. Mona had never heard the term “my dogs are barking” in reference to the feet being tired and sore. She would have told him that his dogs might be happier rolling on dead salmon at Sandy Beach. I quickly stepped in and the man and “his dogs” went home very

happy with one of our foot rollers. Mona had struggled with headaches for many years until she found relief by using BOB, or Balls of Bliss pressure point tool. Every night, before falling asleep she places the tool under her head on the pillow for couple of minutes. I am thankful for her relief but a little sad as “BOB” has taken away some of my snuggle time. The success of BOB was influential in deciding to market our products. With our creativity and success, we now have a workshop outside our home. There is no longer a drill press in our kitchen and we also have a small store front to display our products. I have not given up my healing art, massage therapy. We also have a massage room in the back, which is my day job. Surfing and massage are the most relaxing activities to my soul and I think I will always practice massage therapy, unless, of course love makes me move to Yakutat.
