nd it’s October. Day and night of the sideways rain cut in half by Alaska Day and finished with Halloween, and Halloween means the start of the holiday season! Now that we have a sweet baby girl at home, we are getting excited for all the holidays we get to relive through a child’s eyes. Yes, we know she may be too little at the moment to actually participate and remember but that won’t stop us from pretending and living vicariously through her until she’s old enough. I’m so excited for homemade Halloween costumes and trick or treating in the pouring rain or snow, By Anna Hoke

a little onesie that says “momma’s little turkey” for Thanksgiving, and of course presents and Santa Claus at Christmas. My favorite thing about Halloween while growing up is that it was the holiday that never seemed to end. Typically there was the initial excitement of picking out a Halloween costume or having one homemade and then wearing it around the house, to the store, and to bed for days before the actual holiday. I’m sure many a night in October a spiderman or a princess brushes their teeth and is put to bed, because it’s a school night. Then finally, the day you get to dress up in

came out pretty darn good! Not only that, we lived up a huge, steep, scary hill that no one would ever think to come up, and my parents would buy way too much candy on the off chance that a heard of a hundred kids would trick or treat up our stealthy driveway (we never got a single trick or treater by the way) so, double score! Candy for everyone, for months! Whether it was the costumes or the candy as the main objective of Halloween, it sure brought excitement and joy to my life every year. I hope you liked reading as much as I liked reminiscing! Tell me your favorite holiday memory! Submit it to info@seakliving.com and get it published! Money Totally Bought Happiness Editorial by Courtney Wendel Photography by Anna Hoke

My heart is at home Amid the glaciers and peaks, I want for nothing.

As

we enter the holiday roller coaster of parties, desserts, dresses, and decorations, I am happy that we start our winter festivities with Alaska Day. I’m sure that many states – if not all – have a day to recognize the day they became an outline on the United States map. But for Alaska, we kind of got around a bit before ending up where we are now. Contrary to some firmly held tourist beliefs, we were never actually part of our friendly Canuck neighbors just a hop and a skip away. Spain tried, sent some boats over, got in a few scuffles with the Brits who were also trying, but never really settled in as the Russians were already busy trapping their way along

our coasts and playing Monopoly. But with less than 1,000ish Russians, it was pretty hard to get Park Place and Boardwalk, let alone put up any hotels. Luckily the Tlingit were able to

stand their ground and keep doing their thing – because let’s face it, Vitus Bering did not ‘discover’ Alyeska, (‘the mainland’ or ‘the land the water breaks against’), people were already here for thousands of years. But I am so glad Seward took one for the team and endured some serious grief for buying this frigid wasteland full of nothing but snow and ice including gold, glaciers, salmon, bears, mountains, lakes, berries, trees, birds, seals, whales, dolphins, and everything that makes my heart happy. The United States flag was hoisted in the beautiful

celebrations they are well known for: Fairbanks kicks off the calendar year with the internarial Ice Festival in February, Anchorage parties Alaskan style with Fur Rondy in late February to early March, Juneau sings and dances it’s heart out with Folk Festival in April, Petersburg embraces Norwegian fishing culture with May Fest, the hops flow at Brew Fest in Haines in late May, people pack the streets of Seward on 4th of July, Girdwood plays music in the tress during Forest Fair in early July, Wrangell hosts the Bear Festival in late July, Ketchikan races slugs and bakes with berries in their Blueberry Festival in late July to early August, and finally everyone flocks to Haines for the Bald Eagle Festival

in November. But something a lot of people don’t realize is that without Alaska Day in Sitka, our celebrations and state pride would look incredibly different here in 2015. And though this list of celebrations is a good way to plan an amazing year, it’s not just our formal celebrations that should make us thankful for Alaska Day, but actually EVERY DAY; because Alaska is pretty amazing, 365 days a year. Except for that whole Good Friday fiasco, I don’t think that was a good day in Alaska’s diary. town of Sitka on Friday, October 18th, 1867. Many of our amazing

And aside from all the natural beauty, I want people that are as caring and genuine as Alaskan’s are. Is this too much to ask of life? No. No it’s not. I have found all of this and more.

I have here, I will consider it.” And I have yet to find a truly comparable city anywhere else. There are several states with breathtaking mountain ranges, with beautiful beaches, and states with wildlife around every corner. But I don’t just want these individual things; I unabashedly want them all together. I want to hike from the ocean to a mountain peak and gaze for miles across inlets and alpine lakes. I want to go hang out at a glacier watching bears and then go

I want to keep the spirit and appreciation of Alaska alive in our home by celebrating Alaska Day. At this age, they just want to get messy and be creative. BASEBOARD TRIM

We

bought a house a little over a year ago and as we plan upgrades we try to stick with a consistent theme throughout. We’ve decided we want a house that feels casual and beachy but warm and comfortable. We want a coastal inspired house that’s not necessarily on the beach. We’ve recently decided that our small kids/guest bath is the first thing we need to tackle so we’re in the process of selecting materials. Being married

I thought, “oh this is easy, how much trim can there be to choose from?” Well, to there are a ton of options when it comes a to trim and many of the options can take conyour home from “builder grade” to a fintractor ished and stylish look. coastal theme I love. I want baseboard in my beach inspired home because I think it works best with the look I’m working toward. In my previous craftsman home, I had a gorgeous trim that was painted and it made a home that came straight from the builder feel a bit more authentic. Though the trim in that house was a neutral color, it but gave the home a warmth that would have been lacking had it been bright white. So that’s another dilemma that I’m dealing with, to paint my trim white, creamy white or a beige color. I think I’ve settled on a creamy white but haven’t selected an exact shade. It’s funny, but I didn’t think the tiny bathroom I’ve decided to remodel would have involved so many decisions. The good thing about some of this is once I’ve made a decision for the tiny bath, on something like baseboard, I won’t have to

So if you are planning to replace the baseboard in your home here are some things to consider.

1.

Find photos of homes where the baseboard fits with the look you’re going for, consider color, wood type and size of the baseboard. This will help in getting the baseboard to tie into the theme of your home.

2.

Visit your local lumber store. They have trim samples. If you want to see the samples painted or stained, local paint stores can help guide the process.

3.

When you’re deciding on baseboard, consider how it will impact other trim in your home, including trim around windows and doors and how it will impact the doors themselves. Making these decisions for myself gave me a much better appreciation for the decisions that my clients have to regularly make. 10 Things You Need for Your First Place Together Woo-hoo, you and your partner are taking the next step in the game of life! You have purchased a home and now you have to live in it- together. It’s an exciting transition By Regina DiLauro-Fay and also a terrifying one. If you’ve ever lived with someone, you know how hard it can be to make compromises regarding your space, especially its design style. After all, how do you kindly say, ‘those paintings by your sister are not welcome at our new place’? The good news is, you don’t have to! With interior design help from DF Designs you and your partner can find new and refreshing pieces that inspire the both of you! These essentials are the key to creating the ultimate nest for two.

1.

Proper throw pillows

When you move in together, you can expect a lot more cuddle time on the couch. Look for down filled or down alternative. Make couch time quality time with throw pillows

that not only look amazing, but feel amazing, too! Find a variety of throw pillows and furniture at Southeast Furniture Warehouse.

2. Adult glassware

Look guys, beer glasses just don’t cut it as primary drinking glasses. Now is the time to buy a set (yes, a set) of drinking glasses — it’s just what adults do! And yes, at least a set of 6. And with so many options to choose from, glasses are a super fun item to shop for. Check out Crate & Barrel, glasses as inexpensive as 95cents each, or spend a little more for elegant artsy glasses from Annie Kaill’s.

3. Plants

Ready to test your teamwork and nurturing skills? You guys have each other’s backs now, and nobody’s gonna die on your watch! Add some greenery to your space with indoor plants. Take them up, up, and away with a hanging planter, or keep it grounded with beautiful pots. Don’t be afraid of alternative container for plants as well. Paint some yogurt containers, plant some seeds, place in your windowsill and watch then grow. Remember that low-maintenance cacti and succulents are con-

4. Kitchen Essentials

9. A spacious desk

5. A hamper fit for two

10.Live life by candlelight

Now that neither of you are alone, the ‘I can’t cook for just myself’ excuse no longer flies. Homemade meals give you and your partner a chance to spend some quality time preparing dishes, and it will help keep your daily expenses down. Splurge on the essentials, like a cutting board, a nice knife set and a big fry pan found at Gourmet Alaska.

Moving into a space with your partner can be exciting and fun, but when joining cohabitation nation, you should know that your place isn’t going to be picture-perfect 100% of the time. The easiest and quickest way to clean up at home? Get those dirty clothes outta the way, and toss ’em into a large, industrial-size hamper. Check out Houzz for a wide variety of options and FREE shipping.

6. Alarm clock

Chances are you and your partner solely rely on your smartphones to give you the time. Believe it or not, alarm clocks are still relevant. Give yourself a break when you get home from a long day and hit that power button.

you leave the house, you remember to celebrate your new home and your new life together.

The bulletin board is a great place to leave Post-It love notes or pin practical reminders like the weekly grocery or to-do list. This can help in the first steps in learning to communicate and share.

8. Picture frames

You know your favorite pic of the two of you on Instagram? Print it out and pick a frame. Place it by your door so that each time

With papers and docs mixed together, it’s as important as ever to keep your paperwork in order. Add some organization to your life with a desk. Don’t be afraid of a used desk, check out the thrift store even. Look for one with a file cabinet to store important papers and keep your desk top clutter-free.

Set the mood by scattering candles throughout your home, grab some inexpensive tea lights at Walmart. Create a relaxing ambiance for your partner to come home to. Stay away from scented candles as everyone has a different smell preference. A finished, beautiful space with all the essentials is the perfect start to a long future together. Good vs. Evil October Meals

Recipes

Good: Roasted squash salad with spinach, cranberries, pecans and feta

1 cup quinoa (I use a blend of white, black and red quinoa) 2 cups garnet yams (or sweet potatoes), peeled and cubed ½ cup pecans, rough chopped ½ cup dried cranberries 3 oz baby spinach leaves (that’s about a third of one of those bags, please buy organic!!) 2 oz feta cheese 2 Tbsp olive oil 1 Tbsp maple syrup juice of half lemon ½ tsp minced garlic pinch salt pinch pepper 2 Tbsp butter 3 Tbsp brown sugar pepitas, sunflower seeds, flax seeds or other for added healthy crunch (or bacon) To cook the quinoa: in a medium saucepan, bring 1¼ cup water and the quinoa to a boil. Cover and simmer over low heat until cooked, about twenty minutes. Set aside and let cool before fluffing with a fork. While the quinoa is cooking, put the olive oil, maple syrup, lemon juice, garlic and salt and pepper in a jar with a lid and shake to blend. Cook sweet potato in boiling water until tender when pierced with a fork-about ten minutes. Drain in a colander and set aside. Melt the butter in a frying pan over high heat. Add the sugar. When the sugar starts to bubble, add the yam cubes and cook until brown and caramelized, stir often making sure not to burn them. Toss quinoa with the dressing, spinach and half the feta in a large serving bowl; top with cranberries, pecans and rest of the feta; fold ingredients together gently. (this is the pretty part) Can be served warm (my favorite) or cold October meals... A little taste of fall, so you’re all in a panic to clean up before the snow flies, exhausted from school starting and teaching new routines, and well, it’s already time to decorate and adorn the house in gourds and cobwebs... (didn’t we just clean those and try and keep the spiders out of the house; hint: try some eucalyptus oil...they hate it and I a tale of

spray it on all doors and windows this time of year) RIP Wes Craven, now is a great time to share some of his crazy movies and freak the neighborhood kids completely out. Here is a simple dish that’s great for a dinner, leftovers for lunch or make your kids try and explain it to their kindergarten teacher (yes I am that mom) use different sweet potatoes (yams, etc, if it’s from America it’s a sweet potato and there are many different kinds, try something new, whatever you choose, try to make it a few different ways, they make great tater tots, home fries, soups and are great roasted in this salad. You can’t screw them up and they are incredibly healthy packed with vitamins A and C as well as tons of minerals if you buy organic, whatever you pick, enjoy it’s funny shape, strange markings and make it messy, or make it pretty, it’s fall have fun with it, nourish yourself before winter, or just make it pretty!!
