Letter from the Publisher Welcome to October! The month of PFD distribution, Alaska Day, Halloween and stormy weather. Speaking of the wind, rain, and maybe snow, I wanted to compile a list of things to do with and without kiddos when the weather is less than favorable.

Gym: We have a number of gyms and w o r k o u t facilities in Southeast. I am guilty of not visiting the gym and I have been a member for quite a long time. My “excuse” is that it was summer and I was doing a lot of outdoor activities but deep down that excuse is mixed with laziness and the fact that I have a little one. Some of our local gyms even offer childcare which is great and takes that excuse out of my book.

Dimond Park Field House: The field house has a lot to offer from various sports, the indoor track and turf for tots. There seems to always be something going on at the field house and it’s a great place to burn some energy, even if it’s walking the track for a few minutes. Pool: I just found a new love for swimming. I have a friend who swam competitively and also taught swimming and now she’s teaching me! I’ve had a great time learning new drills with her, and of course using the floaty kick board while having a chat when our heads are not underwater. Lucky for us there are two pools in town so no matter where you live they aren’t too far away.

Library/SLAM: We have two new state of the art educational buildings both in the valley and downtown. They are great places to go check out on a rainy day. Read a book or explore and check

What to do... out the various sections and exhibits! Mall Walking: As a parent of a 14 month old we often “mall walk” while the other parent is eating or shopping. One of our favorite restaurants is Little Hong Kong in the valley. Our little one will eat two bites of wonton soup and is fully fueled and ready to explore. We meander down the hallway, waving to other mall walkers and discover “exciting” things like the gumball machine or the fish tank in Bauer and Associates office. Costco: And then there’s shopping. Who doesn’t love Costco any day of the week but especially on a rainy day. We love to go down every isle, check

out what’s new and exciting, have a sample or three, and usually run into friends or family and have a chat. We always find something we “need” to have that we didn’t anticipate buying when we first entered and that is all part of the excitement and experience. And of course when you exhaust all your resources indoors, throw on a coat, hat and some boots and hit the pavement or trails. I cannot express enough how getting outside for even twenty minutes, even if the weather is terrible changes my mood. It’s easy to be gloom and doom while looking out the window but when you are out in it, it’s easier to gain an appreciation and see the beauty in it. Happy Fall everyone, stay warm! THE INNOVATORS OF COMFORTâ„¢

* See store for details.

BACK TO SCHOOL Forgive me now for the bit of rambling this article is going to be. I’m missing Alaska. I sort of feel like I’ve been away for the summer and now school is starting and it’s time to be back. Only, I’m not headed North – not yet. Facebook was flooded with first day of school photos the beginning of September, but my kids were still at home. No, we actually are not planning to homeschool this year. Though I’d never say “never”. I have quite a few friends who do it, and do it very successfully. In fact Juneau has a growing number of homeschool families and has built an incredible community network for homeschool participation and support. I may have to ask one of the homeschool mother’s I know to write a guest article about how it all works. My children were still home because we switched school districts when we moved again mid-July. At the very last minute, places for them opened up on the coveted waiting list at the nearby Montessori school. They start classes after Labor Day. However, we have had a whole week of transitionary visits and planned events to ease the girls into their soon to be new environment. For my oldest it is a long awaited return to the Montessori method. She had a great year at the public school last year, but she had started at age 3 and finished Kindergarten at Juneau Montessori School on South Douglas. She thrived there and had been asking when she would get to go back to Montessori. Though to be honest, I think she missed the “Juneau” Montessori specifically and perhaps most honestly she missed her friends at Juneau Montessori. Many of those friends have dispersed across different schools throughout Juneau, so her classroom would never

have been made up of exactly use may foster independence those same friends even if we had and build responsibility as well stayed in Juneau. Montessori has as give you a break from being a teaching style that incorporates solely responsible for everyone children spanning three ages or else in addition to yourself. grades into one classroom where Have a routine. Children they function much as a family. That’s and nurtured, guided and instructed. The why author Stephen Covey’s book The 7 Montessori method fosters deep connection Habits of Highly Successful People continues with peers that is not easily forgotten. Just to be a classic read for those who want to the other night at dinner, our oldest was trying be successful in life. Because habits, good to catch her Dad with trick questions and he or bad, determine to what degree a person was trying to prove he knows everything. This is able to achieve both their personal and test ended with her question – “Ya, well do public goals. Make sure you as the parent you know what my BEST friend’s name is?”… are allowing enough time in your schedule “Yes!”, he answered. “Maggie”…. She was to accommodate that children get distracted silent; obviously shocked. She assumed he’d and move off task. Some things may be much rattle of any number of new dear friends faster for you to do yourself, but if you allow she’s made here in Washington. But, he the time now for them to learn to do those was right. Maggie was Jaya’s soul mate at tasks, it frees up your time and responsibility Juneau Montessori. I think “Maggie” may be down the road. It is an investment in the the answer to that question forever. Some future to make the extra time now. friendships are just that way, no matter Eat well. No one is at their best if how many miles or how much time passes their blood sugar is not well managed between. I too have those deep rooted, never ending, lifelong friendships from having or they are hungry. Plan ahead so there is grown up together in Whitestone Logging food available as well as the time needed to Camp out near Hoonah. A handful of those prepare and eat it before your child heads lifelong friends showed up as a surprise out the door. Make sure they eat enough and for my 40th birthday in July. Maybe it’s as that the food choices are not highly refined much Alaska, and the smaller communities and processed foods. These often contain too much sugar, are too high in carbohydrate especially, that create opportunity for this which converts to sugar almost immediately, sort of closeness because of reduced class sizes that sometimes still group ages out of or have other additives that negatively influence your child’s attitude, attention span, necessity more so than philosophy. adaptive and I often hear people echo the same sentiment with “They’ll be fine!” They probably will be. However if you carefully listen to how children articulate the smallest of events in their lives, you’ll begin to notice that what we as adults glaze over, children become fixated on. These events can dominate their whole day and dictate their attitudes and happiness. There are some things we as parents can do at home to make these transitions easier. Here’s my top suggestions:

1.

Be organized. Creating a space for those things that have to come and go back and forth to school with your child every day will ensure that you are not scrambling in the morning to pull it all together. Having a checklist your child can

4.

Sleep well. Have a bed time routine that gets your child in bed and sleeping early. I’ve been researching this area some, and the experts in this field are in agreement. Kids need more sleep. If you have a child who does not sleep well, try adjusting quality, quantity and timing of food ( this actually has a profound impact on sleep), create good bed time rituals and implement sleep hygiene techniques. If that doesn’t work there may be an underlying medical cause that should be addressed.

5.

Exercise. Make sure your kids are getting outside to actively play every day. I know it rains 368 days a year - I was born in Southeast Alaska and have lived there most my life. We played in the rain when I was a kid. Half the time we were

barefoot and didn’t have rain coats. I’m not advocating that, just pointing out that your child can not only survive playing in the rain, but will probably learn to love it if you start them young. They will reap lifelong health benefits from creating a habit of fun physical play. If you just can’t get outside, then they still need to be actively moving or participating in some sort of indoor physical activity. Limit all forms of screen time…. That’s a whole article on its’ own. Just trust me – screen time is re-shaping your child’s brain in not so healthy ways.

6.

Relax. Making time to simply be together as family is important for both your and your children’s emotional, spiritual, and psychological well-being. Families need connection. As a working parent I know how hard that is, but again, you are making the time while they are young as an investment in your shared future. Cultivate relationship now. Grasp the present while planning for the future. I know you all already know the list above is important – what I’ve shared is nothing new; you’ve heard it before. I know it can feel overwhelming to do it all. So let me leave you with a truth that I’m constantly trying to embrace myself. “Just start.” I often neglect to take action because I’m afraid I don’t have the time, resources or understanding to do it all or do it right. You don’t have to do it all at once. It doesn’t have to be perfect. You can make changes later and add to the process as possible. The key is simply to start. I promise, momentum takes over and it gets easier. Just start.

Dr. Summer Beattie,ND was born and grew up in Southeawst Alaska - it will always be home. A 2004 graduate of Bastyr University, she served two terms on the board of directors for the Washington Association of Naturopathic Physicians, and has worked in a variety of primary and specialty care settings. This has given her a broad wealth of experience that she now uses in a unique clinical practice with a focus on rejuvenative physical and aesthetic medicine. Dr. Beattie,ND offers comprehensive care as it relates to physical rehabilitation from a Naturopathic Orthopedic perspective. 5 DIY PROJECTS TO LIVEN UP YOUR OFFICE (BPT) - Whether you go into the office every day or work from home, most of us probably spend a lot more time at our desk than anywhere else. Why not take some time to make it a space that you can enjoy? With some creativity and individual flare, you can transform a utilitarian work station into a personalized think tank that is as stylish and unique as you. Best of all, you don’t have to hire a contractor to do this. Whether you’re a pro DIYer or new to the crafting game, here are five simple ways to make a serious design statement in your office. Add color It’s truly amazing what vibrant or soothing colors can do for a space! So where to begin? Try this: Take a quick inventory of everything in your office that looks dull, flat or just plain. This could be a wicker basket, a lamp or even a coat rack! Try using a high quality general purpose spray paint such as Krylon COVERMAXX. It’s a paint and primer in one, resulting in

|

premium coverage and superior color in one simple coat! Whatever color you choose - red, green or blue - the transformation will astonish you and the bright bold colors are bound to put a spring in your step, even on a stressful work day. Go green and fill your space with plants! If you already have a plant or two in your office, why not buy more? In most cases, you’ll want to select plants that thrive in low-light conditions. Now, the true creative work is in how you choose to arrange your plants. Rather than just placing them on your desk, look into hangers and wall hooks - all of which will create a winning combination where nature meets design. Write it out on a chalkboard

If you’re someone who stays organized by writing out your schedule or to-do list each week, a chalkboard is the perfect addition to your workspace. Rather than buying a board, pick up a can of Krylon Chalkboard Paint. Simply spray it on wood, metal or glass and once it dries, you’ll have your very own custom chalkboard that works with chalk or chalkboard markers. Declutter in style We’re all more productive when we’re organized, so getting rid of clutter is a must do in every office. Make organizing fun by incorporating bold colors! Use bright file folders to keep track of important documents or create your own supply containers using mason jars to keep all of your desk items in one place. To add additional flare, spray your mason

From Door to Door W

hat is the first thing you see before entering a friend’s home? Well it is probably their front door. Have you seen your front door? Is it inviting? There are many types of doors on the market and a variety of hardware to make entry doors more attractive. Attractive entry doors come in all shapes and sizes and are available in a variety of materials. I have seen small, or what seemed small entry doors that fit the home just perfectly, to large mostly glass entry doors, to large solid wood doors that took more than two carpenters to hang that would make your jaw drop. Although most of us have a budget and front entry door should be efficient, attractive, and affordable. We can’t spent tens of thousands of dollars on a front entry door or all the doors within a home but we can make them look like a million dollars.

Anyway, wood doors have their place in entry doors but they can be expensive and may lack the efficiency most households need.

Steel entry doors come in a wide variety of shapes, French Doors sizes, and configurations. French doors like sliding By Greg Stopher Steel entry doors are very Stopher Construction doors come in all the affordable and efficient as above materials with all the well. can open. With both doors open, a five foot wide door French door and a six foot wide French door will open up to nearly five and six feet respectively.

Installation is everything. A door, like a window, is only as good as its installation.

Entry Doors Typically the three types of materials a front entry door can be constructed of include steel, fiberglass, and solid wood. While solid wood is very attractive and some homes just call for a nice wood entry door they can also be the most expensive. Wood front doors are typically not energy rated as well but the look can be worth losing a couple of points on your energy rating. I have installed solid African mahogany wood doors 4’0 wide with an arched top. Nice door but I would not want to see how much it set the owner back with its ball bearing stainless steel hinges. Shut your fingers in that door and you would know it. Wood doors can be custom made to any opening or configuration an architect can dream up.

more affordable then wood doors. Fiberglass doors can also be as efficient and sometime more efficient than steel doors. With the right finish a fiberglass door can be stained to resemble a wood door. Most fiberglass doors that are stained to look like wood can only be distinguished from wood when very close up. Patio or Sliding Doors Sliding doors come in all the above materials but also fall into a window category and can be constructed of vinyl material. The new vinyl frames are insulated and can be very efficient. One down side of siding doors are

French doors are usually more costly than their sliding counterparts depending on the material, size, and configuration. Installation Installation is everything. A door, like a window, is only as good as its installation. Why spend money on an energy efficient door to only have it improperly installed? I’ve seen doors that are not correctly installed actually lose more heat than the 40-year-old door it was replacing. Furthermore, an improper installation can lead to moisture problems and damage to the interior of the home.

Whether installing a door in new construction or replacing an existing door, the installation should be the same. Start with a clean slate, no old materials remaining. Wrap the clean rough opening with an ice and water shield. Start at the bottom and work your way up the header with the wrap. Create a pan at the base of the door so that if water finds its way under the threshold of the door it will not find its way to the interior. Install the door and use spray-in foam to seal all the way around the door. Any air leakage will result in a less efficient door installation and negate any efficiency the door has. When selecting doors it’s important to find a door you like to best suit your budget and efficiency needs. Efficiency of a door can greatly increase the comfort of your home. As I stated above, it’s important to have your doors properly installed to maximize efficiency and comfort. A follow up article on doors will appear in the next issue. We will discuss the various types of interior door options as well as garage doors. Sometimes I think Life is like an exuberant lab who bulldozes past you into the house the moment you open the door trying to squeeze juuuuusst your arm in to grab the towel, tracking mud from her adventure on the carpet as you run after her, shakes in the middle of the living room flinging dirty water all over your couch and walls while you stand there trying to put the towel over at least part of her to contain some of the disaster, then drops her slobbery ball at your feet with the happiest expression on her face – because every day is the best day ever. And there you are, watching the beast you love

wreak havoc on your little slice of orderly life. But every day really is the best day ever, because you were lucky to wake up to see another sunrise. And you can’t really blame Life. Because I mean, she is amoral – she doesn’t do anything maliciously, she just does. She doesn’t wish harm on you when she gleefully runs up the stairs to her favorite spot in the house, she doesn’t hope you

suffer while you clean the walls, carpet, and couch. And really, every decision you made up until this point lead you to getting home with a muddy dog who just loves adventuring and loves the home she shares with you. It’s hard sometimes to see the choices we made, and then experience the consequences that aren’t so awesome. Every choice has consequences, good or bad; we just hope that they fall on the good scale more often than not. But how we deal with the unforeseen, unintended, or unpleasant consequences help define our character, and help prepare us for everything else life will bring our way. Like when smoke comes out from under your hood on your drive home from work one day, and for even just a second you wonder if flames are going to shoot out – or does that only happen in the movies? So you call your man, start your conversation with “I’m not freaking out but,” and then limp your way home and hope your car doesn’t explode along the way. You are thankful it’s not currently raining because you have never had car troubles before, and when you chose to buy a condo you didn’t get a garage. That was a choice. But you didn’t see this one coming. So you park in your tiny little covered parking spot, and hope it doesn’t turn into an all-night project (as it’s actually getting dark this time of year), and the rain holds off. But for the lower mortgage payment, I gambled that a garage was just a luxury. Now, let’s get real dog disgusting for a moment. (You have been warned.) As much as I love Kiska, she is a filthy, disgusting creature sometimes. She has habits she delights in, that make me cry. Literally. Like, sit on the edge of my bed and shed some self-pity tears. I am SURE I am not the only dog owner that has (silently) wept at how disgusting their Dogbeast is. Fish. Let’s just start with dead fish. For animals that can smell cancer, smell a drop

SEAKLIVING

in blood sugar, smell chemical changes before a seizure, how on earth are they so enamored with dead fish!? It honestly blows my mind. If it smells so rank, so foul, why do they insist in rolling in it? ‘They have 300 million olfactory receptors to our 6 million. The part of their brain that analyses smells is proportionally 40 times greater than ours. If you make the analogy to vision, what you and I can see at a third of a mile, a dog could see more than 3,000 miles away and still see as well.’* I cannot even fathom rotting fish 10,000 times more rotting. The location of the bathroom in relation to the front door isn’t always something we consider when purchasing a home. But the careful-not-to-drip-or-shake-water sprint to the bathroom can feel like your hallway is suddenly 50 yards long. And now for the most disgusting habit of all: poo rolling. I get it: I run and hike a lot too. Sometimes an emergency trail poo happens – especially on super long hikes, or when that one meal decides that it’s suddenly declaring a pan-pan and abandoning ship. I am pretty sure everyone has been there. It’s not the greatest. But, with emergency trail poos, comes the common trail courtesy of BURYING IT. If you can’t dig a cat hole, at least put a rock on it, cover it with moss, put sticks on it, SOMETHING! Because then poo pros like my beast come along and sniff it out like they just found the winning lotto ticket and come back covered in poo from nose to stomach and gleeful as hell. And then I weep. And I mean big fat tears. I have actually just bought a Tacoma for just this reason. When people don’t take the appropriate measures for their waste, I end up walking (or running) behind my dog for possibly miles on a trail, not always upwind of her, and then I had to put her in my Subaru because obviously I can’t tie her to the top like a dead deer. I always try to find water to put her in, but not all of our trails have deep enough lakes or slow enough rivers. Then my car would smell like human poo for days, and getting her into my house to clean her up the best I can is a nightmare. Not to mention the viruses and other bio hazard concerns that come from inadvertently touching human feces. Thank goodness I have a groomer that understands Kiska’s… less than charming qualities…. and is always willing to give her a bath. I mean, my disgusting beast is really

job security for her, right? I know I made the decision to buy my condo, I know my condo doesn’t have a walk-in shower stall, and that my bathtub has glass doors that can really be inconvenient. I also know that it was my choice to adopt my dog, and later buy my condo. These were my choices. But that doesn’t make it any easier when she smells so

bad I actually vomited a little on her one time it she smelled so awful. And then I drank a shower beer to contemplate all of my choices that got me there. * http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/nature/ dogs-sense-of-smell.html Courtney Wendel has lived in Juneau since she was a year old. She has a twin brother and an older brother, and learned to enjoy the outdoors at a young age by following the boys into mischief. Graduating from JDHS in 2006, she attended UAS to receive her Literature of the Environment, BA English degree. When not at work she spends most of her time on the diverse trail system hiking, running, or camping with her spotted pooch and adventure buddies.

Fall Rituals

It’s that time of year, the leaves have changed, the salmon runs have died off and a faint view of termination dust in the mountains starts driving the deer closer to the beach in search of last meals before winter sets in. It’s hunting season again in Southeast! Having grown up in logging camps, fishing and hunting season was always full of fond memories. Memories of time spent with my dad, telling stories, overnight hunting excursions to quite bays and of hanging out in the garage as meat was curing. Also becoming a vegetarian at 13, thru and thru Alaskan none of this bothered me and when I started eating red meat again at 17, it was venison that I couldn’t say no to. I became a “Choositarian” or as my co-worker now lovingly says… I only eat her spirit animals… it’s true. I’m about 70% vegetarian, but the meat that I do consume, is thoughtfully chosen. Was it wild, was it free, did it enjoy and absorb enough energy in its life to add value to my diet? Water is

Now if I could just talk my step dad into trolling around a hide for me so I can make a drum (SE trollers help me out here, serious offers being taken). Enjoy these times with your families, take them hunting, enjoy the hunt and the process as much as the prize. Celebrate the water that connects us all. And make sure to age your game properly… see this great blog on butchery and proper cuts… no need for burgerizing all that amazing meat, keep the bones in, and put some time on it! Great link on venison butchery aging and more. http://hehuntsshecooks.com/breaking-itdown-the-venison-hind-quarter/
