Seafood Gala and Fundraiser Coming Up

ickets are going quickly for Bartlett Regional Hospital Foundation’s Seafood Gala and Fundraiser atop Mt. Roberts on Saturday, September 7th. “If you haven’t purchased yours yet, get them on-line or call the JACC as soon as possible,” said Foundation board president Holly Cerne. “You won’t want to miss this fun and worthy event!” The Foundation has been planning the event for months. “The menu is set, decorations complete, and auction items selected. Now, we’re getting ready to get dressed up for a good cause,” said Cerne. “We hope to raise more than $40,000 to provide training and certification for Bartlett’s nurses in conducting sexual assault exams. They’ve been without this important certification for far too long, and it’s time to change that.” For the Gala, celebrity chef Jesse Ziff

hat is the first thing you see before entering a friend’s home? Well it is probably their front door. Have you seen your front door? Is it inviting? There are many types of doors on the market and a variety of hardware to make entry doors more attractive. Attractive entry doors come in all shapes and sizes and are available in a variety of materials. I have seen small, or what seemed small entry doors that fit the home just perfectly, to large mostly glass entry doors, to large solid wood doors that took more than two carpenters to hang that would make your jaw drop. Patio or Sliding Doors Sliding doors come in all the above materials but also fall into a window category and can be constructed of vinyl material. The new vinyl frames are insulated and can be very efficient. One down side of siding doors are that they are as air tight as they will ever be upon first opening. Thereafter, each slide open will ever so slightly loosen the air tightness of the door.

short list to get you started: GETTING TO AND FROM SCHOOL SAFELY: The basic guidelines are to have children walk with an adult whenever possible, and walk with friends. Choose a safe route and insist your child never take short-cuts. Remind your child that play such as pushing and chasing is not safe while walking along a roadway. With the shorter daylight hours and dark rainy days we have here in Alaska, make sure your child wears clothing that makes them easily visible to drivers. They may need to carry a flashlight or wear reflective gear. Review traffic safety for pedestrians and remind them that not all drivers are paying attention, parked cars may have drivers who are getting ready to move, and corners and driveways often have blindspots. If driving, make sure you are following all traffic regulations and have your child in the appropriate safety restraint for his or her age, weight and height. If your child rides the bus, review safety protocol with the driver. Teach your child to recognize adults who can be safe – such as the crossing guard, and how to avoid and alert others to potentially unsafe strangers. REDUCE ACCIDENTS ON THE PLAYGROUND: Check your child’s clothing to make sure there are no cords or drawstrings that could get caught on play equipment and especially anything that might cause strangulation including necklaces and bike helmets – in winter forego scarves for neck warmers and clip mittens instead of using a string. Ensure the school is following guidelines for proper playground equipment and maintenance and that proper adult supervision is always in place during use. Teach children that shoving and crowding on play equipment is not safe. PROPER SPORTS EQUIPMENT:
If your child plays sports, make sure they are properly fitted and using protective gear appropriate to their sport. A good quality helmet is worth the extra expense. Make sure coaches and trainers are up-to-date on how to prevent common injuries and that they have the supplies and know-how to recognize and treat them quickly. In addition, do not overload backpacks your child carries every day. BULLYING: This is becoming an increasing concern for parents. It is important that your child’s school have training for staff and programs for kids to help prevent, recognize and address issues as they arise. Bullying may show up as physical aggression, verbal teasing, abusive language or purposely leaving someone out. Bullying may come from peers or even adults and older children the school expects to be supervisors. Make sure your child knows that you will not accept this type of behavior from them, even in retaliation. Your child should understand that telling you or another authority figure at school (principle, teacher, lunch room helper, etc.) is important to keep them and others safe.

e typically suggest being well planned when discussing a remodel to cut down on unexpected costs and to keep the project flowing at a constant rate; however, this project went a little differently. What started as a small siding repair, soon turned into a window replacement project and rot repair. Sound familiar? We can all relate with the pressing threat of rot in Juneau... The guest bathroom in this home was not originally scheduled to be completed in this phase but after the back wall of the bathroom was compromised due to rot, it became evident that moving the remodel timeline up to coordinate with the repairs being made to this area of the home would be in the best interest of the homeowner. While
the expedited timing of this remodel was a

its purpose over the years and was due for a new lease on life. The original soft gray tones of the wallpaper, countertop, and flooring were ready for a change and with the homeowners’ requests of providing ample storage space, improved lighting, ample countertop space, and dual sinks in mind, we set off to create a new bathroom! This room has a uniquely high ceiling in comparison to the small floor space so one of the first items we addressed was how to make the room appear wider and larger than it actually is. By floating the vanity and toilet up off of the floor, a larger uninterrupted floor plane was achieved and is more proportionate in comparison to the height of the room. The verticality of the space was also offset by the horizontal
line of the vanity and mirror design. An
inlaid strip of metallic tile also highlights the continual floor space from wall to wall and even ties into the brushed nickel hardware and fixtures found throughout. The modern architecture of this home is clean lined so the materials chosen for the interior reflect this style as well. The
cabinetry, by Showplace Wood Products, is in a modern flat panel maple door style. The stain color of the cabinetry ties into the natural fir tongue and groove ceiling and brings in an added sense of warmth to the space. Keeping with the color palette found throughout the rest of the home,
the large scale, porcelain floor tile is in charcoal and is paired with a 6x18 striated wall tile from the same tile collection. These darker elements were then contrasted with white plumbing fixtures and the white Thassos Marble countertop. While the client originally requested dual sinks, we proposed a single, oversized sink that could accommodate two people on occasion since this room functions more as a powder room more often than a guest bathroom these days. Lastly, a strip of color-changing LED lighting was added to the base of the

floating vanity cabinet. This unexpected pop of color highlights the darker space below the vanity and even serves as a night light for guests! While the rot that caused this project was unfortunate and rather unrewarding to repair, this bathroom remodel brought in some personal enjoyment and now serves as the silver lining for the whole ordeal! Pesto Ingredients: 2 Cups Cilantro leaves
Recipe
1/3 cup olive oil 3 cloves garlic ¼ tsp ground coriander 2 tbsp blanched almonds 2 tbsp cashews 2 tbsp pinenuts 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice Pasta of your choosing, cooked in sea salted water to al dente or “to the tooth” slightly underdone, I love making pasta from scratch, or in a pinch semolina or whole wheat shapes 1 cup sun dried tomatoes, in oil, chopped and drained
Directions: Combine pesto ingredients in your favorite blender with salt and black pepper to taste. Feel free to add a little kale or flax meal, pour on hot pasta so it melts together. nations have banned them citing health concerns, we produce and consume the vast majority in the United States. While our national health has declined, child-
