Welcome Writer!
H
ello September!? I question it because the time seems to have passed by at an unbelievable rate. Are we already saying adieu to summer and hello to fall? Pinch me.. My summer was quite an exciting one, although a different kind of excitement than yours probably, full of pregnancy complications, hospital stays, a medevac, and finally birthing a beautiful, healthy wonderful baby. As I sit here, wearing my baby in a wrap exhilarated because I am typing with two hands, I can’t help but peer out my window at the view of Thunder Mountain and wonder what it’s like up top. It will be a while before I get back to “t h u n d e r” shape and I’m ok with that, I’m always up
August edition; The Stains of Summer, but I didn’t get a chance to formally welcome Courtney Wendel to the Southeast Living Magazine crew! Courtney Wendel has lived in Juneau since she was a year old, her parents being farmers from Iowa. She has a twin brother and an older brother, and learned to enjoy the outdoors at a young age by following the boys into mischief. Graduating from JDHS in 2006, she attended UAS to receive her Literature of the Environment, BA English degree in the spring of 2011. She is proud to call Juneau home, with her beloved cat and dog. When not at work for the Department of Transportation, she spends most of her time on the
diverse trail system hiking, running, or camping with her spotted pooch and adventure buddies. I am so excited to add an outdoors/nature section to the magazine and Courtney is the perfect fit! Check out her editorial this month And the Rain Falls Down on page 6, speaking on the climate we live in and the role the rain plays in our ecosystem. And on that note, stay dry, adventure as much as you can within reason and safety of course, winter will be here before we know it and soon I will be complaining about the lack of rainless/ snowless activities that Southeast has to offer.
e m o c l e W y! e n t r u o C for a challenge and I’m excited to get back to it eventually and see what my new mommy strength has to offer. Speaking of exciting, we have some delightful news on the editorial front. The magazine has a new writer! I’m sure you saw her editorial in the

yet they get so frustrated with the rain. I have to admit, I have been guilty of
this myself. I plan a ridge-line weekend hike, and then clouds move in and hold the peaks in a misty embrace; I hope for a sweet camping trip sans rain flies, but the clouds lose their battle against condensation and the rain falls down. But for all the beauty that Southeast Alaska has to offer, she has to make the magic happen somehow. We have such lush vegetation because there is plenty of water (I’m sure California wishes they had some rain right about now as they spray paint their brown yards green in their D4 drought *1). Our flower and berry season has been amazing for the bees and the birds this spring and summer – as we all know plants wither and lose their turgidity when they don’t get enough water, while taking on the neglected slump of thirst. In addition
to helping our terrestrial flora and fauna, the rain also washes nutrients from the land into our water system. The plankton and fish feed on it, and in turn the trophic levels feed on them, all the way up to our apex predators the orca and humpback whales that our relatives fly from all over the world to come and see while crashing on our couches. And the fish! Holy smokes the spawning rotting fish! Without the plentiful rain, they would have a pretty difficult time swimming and flopping upstream, throwing themselves over waterfalls to spawn. Our healthy black and brown bear population, not to mention our opportunistic scavengers the seagulls and eagles too, would find themselves on merger times without the fish, possibly hitting up more trash cans or crashing a few dinner parties. As we flip our calendars from August to September, and count down the days to September 15th, we should be even more grateful to live in our rainforest ecosystem. Though we all shudder when remembering our “2014 Winter That Never Was”, the deer population should be doing wonderfully this season. After

such a mild winter with plenty of exposed ground and bows to nibble on all winter, the die-off should have been minimal. The newborn fawns were welcomed into the world with beautiful warm sunny days in May that graced their little spotted backs while nibbling on tender shoots and leaves that didn’t have to fight feet of snow to grow. The bucks should have full bellies as they begin to rub their velvet and get ready to battle each other in preparation for the rut. The does should be busy nursing their fawns and storing fat reserves to get them through another winter, with either with their fawns by their sides, or creating the next generation. All thanks to our rain. *1 http://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/ Home/StateDroughtMonitor.aspx?CA Courtney Wendel has lived in Juneau since she was a year old, her parents being farmers from Iowa. A Colorful New School Year It’s that time again – kids are headed back to school, and so this month I’m going to talk about another safety related topic; one you might not have even thought of. Toxic art supplies. I recently saw an article at safbaby.com highlighting a current study by the Environmental Working Group that found asbestos in several brands of crayons that had been imported from China and mostly sold at dollar stores
across the country. This mimicked a smaller study done in Seattle in 2001, where 3 brands of crayons were found to contain asbestos, leading the Consumer Product Safety Commission to ask for those brands to be reformulated. Other older reports from as far back as 1994 resulted in a recall of 11 brands of crayons sold in the US, but imported from China, because they all contained lead. Some had levels high enough to have caused acute lead poisoning in children who
chewed on them, but ingested very little. All had high enough levels to contribute significantly to overall lead exposure over time and some would have caused acute poisoning if a whole crayon were ingested at once. The EcoWaste Coallition found crayons sold in the Phillipines contained unsafe levels of mercury. So if you travel, remember this problem of toxic children’s products, is global. Most of you who have or haven’t observed children know that kids put everything they touch in their
mouths. Crayons are one of the most common art supplies and probably one of the most frequently ingested. Other common ingredients of crayons that may cause health issues are paraffins, aromatic amines, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as well as chemical dyes. Paraffin is derived from petroleum, coal or oil shale and uses toxic chemicals such as toluene and benzene in the manufacturing process. While these toxic solvents

Many scientists used to be firmly encamped in the “dose makes the poison” camp; meaning that a substance could be considered non-toxic if it required large amounts to effect an acute negative response (either death or compromised health) to a short term exposure. What time is proving however, is that chronic exposure to even extremely small amounts often results in serious environmental and health impacts. Truth is, biochemical and environmental science is just not simple and sure; it is an evolving field that constantly challenges our “facts”. Even, Crayola brand crayons, which are probably the oldest, most trusted and most frequently used brand in America may be misleadingly “safe”. Although certified as non-toxic by the Art And Creative Materials Institute, they will not disclose a full ingredients list, stating “proprietary” privilege. Instead, Crayola recommends calling the poison control center if your child has an adverse reaction or ingests one of their products. Their Materials Safety Data Sheet does come with some warnings you may not find on the product box: “Provide adult supervision in a well ventilated area for techniques involving melted crayons. Ironing should be done by an adult in a well ventilated area. Overheating wax crayons
during melting or ironing may release irritating fumes. [And if ingested], contact local poison control center or physician immediately.” Unfortunately, even some of the

The take home message is this: children’s products, toys and art supplies are a significant source of potentially harmful substances. While one single exposure often may not be enough to cause significantly negative health impacts, the totality of exposures to various toxin inclusive products or chronic exposure over time may have huge impacts on their wellbeing and development. Parents can not trust the market to be honest and transparent. Parents have to be reading, researching, and evaluating what exposure they are comfortable with and selecting purchases accordingly. SET YOUR HOME APART WITH CUSTOM
A
lot of detail and attention goes into the flooring we walk on as well as the doors, windows, and cabinets we put in our homes. So why are so many trim details left out of homes? Why not add some style to your home with some custom trim, built-ins, paneled walls, coffered ceiling, and crown moulding? These custom details can really enhance a home and add an element of style and function.
Mouldings can be made of many materials. MDF is an easy material to work with and is good for paint grade mouldings. Larger crown moulding and other moulding are now often made with a dense foam material, which is easy to work with and easy to paint. I always try to be aware of manufactured mouldings and the hazards to indoor air quality so try to find manufactured moulding with low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC). Most mouldA few tips before starting any of ings can be made out of any the projects below: By Greg Stopher type of hardwood or softwood • Trim samples are available for Stopher Construction material and can be painted or you to pick up at local lumstained any number of colors. ber stores Ideas can be visualized and planned out • Before you get started on any project be- with the sample moulding. Base Moulding The base moulding serves the purpose of finishing the floor to wall transition. Most flooring especially wood should have a

gap for expansion and contraction of the floor. So the baseboard serves the purpose of covering that gap. Consider your ceiling heights when determining the size of baseboard moulding. An eight-foot wall would look awkward with 12” of base moulding; however, 18-foot walls with 16” baseboards look great. There really isn’t a formula for the ratio of baseboards to wall height, but rather what looks visually pleasing. The contour of the baseboard used also plays a role. To add more detail to the baseboards a shoe moulding or a base cap can be added. The possibilities are endless. Baseboards can be made up of one to four pieces to draw attention to the room. Simple baseboards can get a lot of attention as well. I have finished many homes with a painted MDF 1” x 6” board as the baseboard and the simplicity of this trim can have quite an impact. Window and Door Casing Window and door casing can be just as elaborate as baseboards and can remain quite simple. Use straight stock material like a 1” x 3” on the sides of the door or

The overall cost is almost a wash when the labor for sheetrock installation around the windows is taken into consideration. From simple straight stock trim to using profiled trim, details can be become more elaborate by adding a fillet on top of the side casing, then installing the top casing and a top casing cap. Fillets and casing caps will give the feeling of a craftsman style trim. Rosettes and plinth blocks can be added to casing to accomplish a more classical look. It is necessary to match the style throughout the home whether going for a classical, craftsman, or a simple trim look. Paneled walls and wainscoting An easy way to remodel a room or change the look of a room is to add paneled walls or wainscoting. They can be just four-feet high or they can go all the way to the ceiling. Paneled walls give depth by creating shadows with the raised stiles and rails. Paneled walls are often painted a different color than the remainder of the wall, which adds even more visual interest. Wainscoting can also set a room apart with a simple bead board capped with chair rail or small crown moulding. Wainscoting gives a similar look to a paneled wall. When planning out wainscoting be aware of the door and window casing and how the panels tie into them. If you do take on one of these projects, be sure to carefully plan out the spacing (especially with paneled walls). Crown Moulding Crown moulding can enhance many details in a home including walls, cabinets, bookcases, and built-in cabinets. CARVE OUT MORE (BPT) - A growing family, overnight guests, work-at-home demands and lifestyle changes can make for cramped quarters in any home. If you’re not ready to move to a bigger house or take on a full-scale addition, carve out more space from your home’s current footprint. Renovating an attic, basement or other unused area can add more living space now, provide flexibility for the future and increase your home’s value. Whether you’re creating a kids’ playroom, extra bedroom or a
living space WITH A ONE-ROOM renovation
new home office, here are some tips for getting the most out of a one-room renovation. Find extra space: the attic. Check out your attic’s current configuration. If it’s an A-shaped space, with the highest point at the top and sloping walls down the side, it may have enough ceiling height to accommodate a bonus room. The lower walls and odd-shaped corners might also provide space to build in some shelving for items such as books or toys. Lighting considerations. Natural light may be at a premium in the new space. With an attic, you may be able to install windows at either side
of the house at the highest point, but a basement is even more limited. Consider supplementing natural light with recessed lighting that maximizes your available ceiling space. Task lighting can also help, while creating a cozy atmosphere. Reliable heating and cooling. Ensuring year-round comfort can be challenging if the new space is not connected to a ducted heating system. A Trane Ductless Mini-Split Heat Pump is an easy, energy efficient solution for areas where installing ductwork may be impractical or too expensive. The compact indoor unit can be mounted on a wall or ceiling, and connects to an outdoor compressor. It comes with a convenient remote control, giving you precise heating and cooling, without the need for ductwork.
number of windows and fire exits that are required and plan accordingly. Create bonus storage with cabinetry. Any renovation also offers the opportunity to squeeze in extra storage, and installing cabinetry is an easy way to do that. Manufacturers offer multiple options for cabinets with built-in storage features, from drawers with built-in organization dividers to cabinets with pull-down shelves that let you pack a lot of items into a small space. These will keep your newly renovated room looking clean, neat and inviting.
Entrances and exits. Whether you’re going up or down with a renovation, it will require using the stairs. This is a good to time make repairs or modifications to the current stairway to ensure safe and easy access. Also be sure to check out your local building codes as to the

Lentil Quinoa Kitchari
Recipe
¾ cup red split lentils, organic (masur dal) ½ cup quinoa, organic 4 cups water ½ tsp tumeric 1 tsp salt 1 ½ tsp ginger, grated 2 green serrano chillies minced 3 Tblsp coconut oil/ghee 1 tsp cumin seeds, whole 1 red onion, organic fine diced 1 lime 2 Tblsp cilantro for garnish
Place lentils, quinoa and water in pressure cooker with salt, tumeric, ginger and green chillies. Cook under pressure for 25 minutes. (Did I mention that any new mother needs a pressure cooker by about the 3rd month of pregnancy and it’s probably not on her baby shower gift list.) While that is cooking or cooling heat the oil up in a heavy pan (cast iron preferably) add the cumin seeds for 30 seconds add onion and cook on meduim low for 10 minutes until golden brown. Add onion mixture to the pressure cooker and mix well, it should have a soft creamy consistancy. Garnish with lime wedges and cilantro before serving. Feel free to add to this recipe, sweet potatoes, differen lentils or mung beans are also a great addition. Rest up, enjoy that cup of tea and enjoy peace of becoming a new mother. From my table to yours, enjoy!

he 4th Trimester; dedicated to all my new mamas, soon to be mamas, yet to be mamas, sisters, aunts, girlfriends, grandmothers and babies... Wait a minute I thought there were only three trimesters in pregnancy? 4 you say? Where is this from? In India it is tradition

to support a woman for the first 40 days after birth. Something that was lost in our culture but is slowly making a comeback and I wanted to shed light on the foods, recipes and culture that surround this, and boy do I wish I had known more when I had my girls, as it would have helped a ton. I nested a few days before the birth of my first born, it was a few days before Thanksgiving and after a few false labor starts I needed something to do so I cooked... Big surprise right? Not only did I cook some great food to have for the holiday I went a bit crazy, I didn’t have a ton of family around, just my spouse and my mother were going to be around and well I guess we needed a fully trimmed organic bird, six side dishes and three types of pie... and don’t forget the appetizers... Of course it all saved well and nourished me weeks after birth which was a godsend for my sleepless nights learning how to nurse my daughter who wasn’t staying awake to latch on properly.... But if I had known which types of food I should have been eating and resting with, that would have certainly made

a difference. So now you can say you’ve been informed what to make for those dinner trains. In Ayurveda medicine, the saying goes “the first 40 days of life will impact the next 40 years of life” During this period mother and newborn are confined to allow the mothers body to recover from the intensity of childbirth when hormone levels change drastically, the uterus returns to pre-pregnancy size, milk production is established and the perineum or c-section area heals. Women are becoming mothers, this is a special time... and far to often it’s not taken into account the huge physical, spiritual and emotional toll that is taken on the woman, rather all the emphasis is placed on the newborn and the mother strives to return to a busy norm of her new role... rather than being pampered like she deserves. So what does this mean in terms of foods? What kind of nourishment does the new mother need? You always hear the staple... stay hydrated, eat protein, and a good mix
of carbs and fresh greens. But for the 4th trimester it has some simple rules... drinking warm liquids... so instead of a glass of water... try Tulsi tea (holy basil) is an amazing tea.. my favorite is the Tulsi Rose from Organic India... talk about herbs to soothe your soul... Rose is very powerful for mother and baby and the anything from Rose water, to rose essential oil use very diluted on mama will make for a happy healthy recovery. Warm broths, bone broths, stewed fruits and grains are also great staples. Avoid cold and crunchy foods during this time... you want meals to be well cooked and easily digestible. Using Ghee or clarified butter instead of full fat butter is ideal. Here is a recipe for Kitchari, (pronounced kitch-a-ree) is like the chicken noodle soup of Indian foods, easily digestable comforting and there a ton of great versions that can help you during this time or for anyone wishing for a hearty, cleansing and healthy warm meal. It is a mixture or mess of beans, and starch with spices.
