Letter from the Publisher Seasonal September Hello September! I hope everyone enjoyed their summer and is ready for fall. I am excited for soup weather, fall decor, crafting, lots of things pumpkin and vacation planning. Yup, this time of year is usually when my brain starts dreaming about a vacation to extend my summer. September is also the final month that the cruise ships are in town and tourism winds down dramatically. It’s a great time to take advantage of good deals, sales and summer activities that downtown and Juneau has to offer before it’s time to pack up for the colder months. I have a number of touristy favorites I do at the end of summer. Mount Roberts Tram: I love to hike up the mountain to the tram. It’s beautiful and I feel comfortable hiking alone because the trail is typically more populated. Continuing the trail above the tram is also fantastic, and on the way back down I love to stop at the gift shop, have a snack or cold beer at the restaurant and then ride the

Shopping: Who doesn’t love a good deal? Many have great end of the season deals which are great for finding Alaskan apparel or knickknacks to send to friends or save for stocking stuffers.

I personally love the Twisted Fish, and for desert, the awesome Alaskan Crepe Escape but there are many greats to choose from. I might also mention there are many great year-round eateries open, and to name just one or even ten wouldn’t

DETAILS MATTER The common phrase “the devil is in the detail” has the figurative meaning that there is something unexpected to be found in the detail of something. This idiom is thought to have grown from the earlier “God is in the detail”. The later saying is reported to have numerous origins, but is known to have been linked to prominent post-World War I architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. I find this very fitting as a quality home is defined by not just the basic structure but also the finishes as well. He was strongly influential in ushering in a definitive era of modern design committed to minimalism, free-flowing spaces and connection of the interior and exterior. This common catchphrase of his is meant to convey the principle that whatever task one undertakes should be completed with precision. Details matter – significantly. The details set apart the average from the excellent. This is true in every aspect of life and it’s true in architecture as well. The new home we purchased a few weeks ago is what prompted me to write about the importance of details. We are just beginning to settle in. Totes and boxes are still piled high, most rooms are in some stage of disarray and lack organization, but it is coming together. I really have my parents to thank for much of what we’ve accomplished so far. They took both our girls home to Juneau for a little visit at “Camp Nana-Papa” so we could physically move without little ones underfoot and then came and spent a weekend helping organize the mass of packaged belongings; we had my Dad hang shelving and more, all the while entertaining our children. My mother is magic in the kitchen – not just because of her baking and cooking skills, but because she knows what to put where so that this part of the home is efficient and easy to work in. Amid the chaos that is moving – I am finding new devilish details of the house and appreciating that the previous owners were obviously thorough in both their planning and completion of this home. In fact, I’ve struggled with writing this piece because I’m so in awe that I wanted to share every fabulous

There are many simple, quick and low-cost curb appeal improvements that you can tackle over the weekend, or even in a day, to give your home an inviting, uplifting spirit.
Add or repair a fence. Make the most of your home’s appearance by considering the details. Looking for a quick way to spruce up your home’s exterior? Adding or repairing a fence to your property is a great value add with a relatively small investment. In order to determine the perfect fence design for your home, you should first consider the end function you are most concerned with, such as curb appeal, protection from the elements or privacy. While building or repairing a fence can definitely be a DIY project that you tackle on your own, many homeowners struggle trying to ensure their fence gate is sag-free and square. say I’m a minimalist, and for good reason. I grew up in a cluttered household where every nook and cranny was stuffed with collectible items, from old dolls, to plates, to unopened “collectible” Barbie dolls that my mom was hoping to sell one day. Then the market for these junky items that had once been worth something went away and suddenly the items that had made putting a towel away or simply closing a closet door difficult for years, were worth nothing, nada. Heck, we couldn’t even give them away. When my husband and I sold our home in Colorado,

work. The decor piece in my dining room cost me a few dollars per frame, 30 minutes locating the free printables I wanted. Then a hour or so to get them printed at a print shop so the details showed. I paid a few dollars for printing. I also had an old mint green paint sample in the garage which I used to make the frames feel the same. Now I’ve made the space feel a bit warmer. The bonus is of this “art” investment is that if I grow tired this set of pieces, I can print something new and replace them anytime I want for little cost and effort. A Moveable House When buying a house, something that comes up often is ‘location, location, location’. Websites and professionals tell you to look at the houses around you, are you close to a school, where is the closest grocery store? It basically comes down to how many square miles your life will reasonably fill up in daily tasks (so maybe don’t worry about your favorite Friday night bar). And for me, I have to say, location played a big role in choosing my place. I have a trail close by, I’m not too far from work, there are no hills between
m e and work, and the grocery store is just a few minutes away. So I would be a hypocrite to say that location wasn’t a factor to me. But by no means do I wake up with the same view every morning. That is far from the truth. Instead, I also bought a moveable

house for my dog. My REI Half Dome 2+ is perfect for Kiska and myself, plus my bag. I am totally that dog lady who read the reviews and honed in on any pictures or posts that had a dog in it. When people give the specs of their dog, their review becomes priceless to me. You fit yourself, a pack, your sweetie, and your 75 pound, long haired, sprawler of a child in your tent? Perfect. For me though, Kiska likes a little more leg room than most dogs. Probably because of the plates in her knees from her torn ACLs, she very rarely curls up like a lot of dogs I see. And that’s ok, she has had quite the medical road so far at the tender age of 4. But, that means that it is a bit cramped for her, myself, and another person. Due to some squished nights with little sleep, I bought a second tent for Barksalot. I got the Marmot Limelight 3. There! A three-person tent should fit me, Kiska, and another person. Because when shopping on sale, why not. Though this tent is heavier than the 2 person, the extra room helps ensure that everyone gets a good night’s rest – should a second person join us. And to be honest, it’s much easier to fit her sleeping pad and sleeping bag

in there when it’s meant for three people anyways. Oh yes, Kiska has an air mattress, a fall/spring bag, and her winter bag. My next dog will probably have more fur, but I didn’t notice her pink mostly-naked-belly when I adopted her at 8 weeks old (to be honest I was looking more at her face), and now in the winter she gets a bit chilly tent camping, or out all night watching Lady Aurora. My adventure buddy should be just as comfortable as I am. And hopefully my next dog will have a bit more insulation for living here (and white toe nails so they are easier to clip). Even though my friends give me grief, on multiple occasions a friend not planning to spend the night has ended up sleeping on her pad and in her bag and in our tent. So consider me ridiculous, or overly prepared, I’ll take them both. I don’t deny that I bought my dog and cat a condo. Because with as many cultural saying out there, I will also mention that not only should you consider location, but no matter where you live, ‘home is where your heart is’. So when I take the love of my life to a cabin, or we camp back in a mountain basin, or take a boat out to an island and camp on the beach, when I wake up with Barky it doesn’t matter where my home is. Because the little beast that I love more than anything is there with me. Without Kiska and Ember, my condo would just be a condo: a place I store my stuff and where I keep my food. It wouldn’t have the emotional attachment of providing for my little fur-mily, the mornings snuggling in bed squished between them, or how Ember runs up and down the stairs at night like a possessed
little dust bunny. To me, it would just be four walls, a floor, and a roof.
