Tips for the Klondike

o I finished a column for and planning! I’ve run the this edition titled “Home Klondike three separate away from Home” which times on three separate was about cabin life and my teams, each experience was experiences with different types different but running-wise of cabins, what they offer or they were all pretty equal don’t and my general love and on a competitive level, and knowledge of cabin life… Fast by that I mean we weren’t forward a few days, I found competitive. I am sure you By Anna Hoke myself in a conversation giving will see what I mean when I tips, encouragement and suggestions tell you the names of my teams… The to a first-time runner of the Klondike first time I participated, I was on the Road Relay Race. This led me to think Turtles, see what I mean about team that it might be an appropriate column names? This was an all women’s team for September, seeing as though from Juneau. the race takes place this month on September 5th and 6th. With that said, Tip #1: If possible, have two or more stay tuned for my piece on cabin life in support vehicles. This lesson was the October edition of Southeast Living learned quickly, yet we suffered the Magazine. First, I will start off by saying consequences the entire race. Our team that I am in no way a fast or talented was scheduled to have two vehicles long distance runner. I run for exercise, which theoretically allows half the team to sleep before they participate in the I don’t normally care about pace and I am slow, so my tips will not be about second half of the race, and permits running, they will be about comfort half the team to support the first

Tip#3: If you have room, bring a pillow. Even if you are stuck in a vehicle or are

tired, a pillow is a great accessory for sleep. The first time I ran the Klondike was exhausting, not only because we were all together in the van and lets face it, nobody got much sleep but also after all that I had to run leg 10, the last leg. Luckily I brought a pillow and was able to rest my head comfortably and mentally prepare of the run ahead.

Tip #2: Bring real food. I made a beginner mistake of taking energy bars and sports drinks. I don’t really know what compelled me to bring dried up energy bars but when someone in the van pulled out a sandwich, I would have paid a lot of money for it.

humor in the name if you ask any seasoned Klondike Runner. This trip for the most part went a lot smoother then my first experience except that swine flu was going around and sadly one of our runners came down with the illness the day before the race. Tip#4: Try to be flexible if possible… Because we lost a runner, we had to shift around people’s legs. Instead of running my planned Leg 2, which is the shortest (but uphill) leg, I had to run Leg 1, and then we combined Leg 2 and 3 for the runner previously scheduled to run Leg 1. This change in plan was all right but the added millage was a little difficult for myself and the poor runner who had to run two legs. The race went relatively smooth and with a second support vehicle we were able to theoretically find some place to sleep. Tip#5: know where you are going to sleep before you need to sleep. Once we were done supporting our Leg 5 runner, around 6am, we were ready for sleep! We had our sleeping bags, our pillows and no idea where we were going to lay around. We ended up sleeping on a platform a little bit passed Carcross, which was great but because vehicles driving by thought it was a funny scene, they beeped, slowed down, and took photos of four people trying to sleep in their sleeping bags on the side of the road. Needless to say, we didn’t get much sleep. Though we were lacking sleep the second time around seemed to go smoother, I learned to bring “real” food and had pad thai after my leg and it was awesome! Speaking of sleep, this particular team decided to save money that would be spent on a hotel and instead camped the entire time. I remembered how tired and gross I felt from my first experience and decided camping isn’t something I wanted to do after being sweaty and surviving on little sleep. Tip#6: If you are good at roughing it, that’s awesome, but if you are a person who needs a shower and a nice bed after a long 24 hours then get a hotel room and book it way in advance. Let me tell you, the hotel room was worth the money. I split it with one other

runner from the Fat Ravens team. I did however let my team members come and take showers in my room before they headed out to sleep in a tent. The third time I ran the Klondike, I ran with the Alaskan Brewing Company team, Blood Sweat and Beers. This was an awesome team and the Brewery pulled out all the stops! We had rooms in Skagway and Whitehorse the first night, and obviously rooms in Whitehorse for the second night. We had an abundance of supporters and vehicles, great food, snack packs, and good spirits! The only thing we were missing was a clear way to mark our support vehicles so that runners and other support vehicles could recognize us.

Q.

A. There are many things that go into buying an existing business, but one of the best places to start is by evaluating what your interest, hobbies and passions are. You will be most successful purchasing a business that fits in with your lifestyle and interests. Second, look for ways that you can expand the business and how you can make it more profitable than it was when you took it over. Finally, seek professional help, give me a call if you want more info about buying or selling your business. I would like to buy an existing business, where should I start?

THE ART DEPARTMENT R ! NE AIN Business Opportunity! The Art Department is for OWL TR sale. The Art Department is a solid established IL W business with 20+ in Juneau. This is for sale of the business only, no real estate is included. MLS#13585. . . . . . . . $148,500

Tip#7: Bring stuff to mark your vehicle. We ended up using some sort of yellow tape tied onto the mirrors of the vehicle but even then it was hard to find in the dark. I suggest vehicle paint or glow sticks. I saw some vehicles with Christmas lights and/or spotlights. I also have some miscellaneous tips that are and aren’t from my own experiences. Bring a headlamp, it will be more useful then you know. If you haven’t trained with electrolyte “goo” or “blocks” don’t pick the race day to try them out, it can lead to a miserable run. Good luck to all the runners and volunteers participating in the Klondike this year! I wish I was running this year’s race but I am nursing an injury. I hope these tips are helpful; planning ahead will do a team good! Anna Hoke is the graphic designer and owner of Southeast Living Magazine. She can be reached at anna@seakliving.com.

A PLACE TO CALL B

uying a new house or choosing a new apartment is a way to start over. When the time comes to buy or move, you must decide where you want to live. It’s good to know how much you can afford, but if you hate the neighborhood,

you’ll never love your new home. And your neighborhood says a lot about you. When someone asks where you live, they are learning more about you than just your geographic location. So before you blindly start looking for a new place to live, think about where you want to live. Trust me, the location will make all the difference. The first thing you must do

is think about what is essential for you in a neighborhood, and then think about the additional wants that you have. What is your commute to work? Do you have kids that need to get to school? Start with knowing your needs and let your needs decide which neighborhood you choose. Everyone’s needs are different, but mine include the amount of time it takes me to get from my home to work, and the distance to local recreation. Your needs might also include the local

Once you’ve zeroed in on the “bones” of your ideal location then you can start exploring the fun stuff: your wants. If you’re anything like me, your wants far outweigh your needs. We all have wants. Peaceful Parenting Peaceful parenting allows for development of will and encourages children to want to make right choices, all at a pace more their own. It means not yelling and controlling instead connecting with our child. Peaceful parenting often means starting over and learning to behave better as a parent - modeling empathy to our children. I’ll never forget one stressful morning when I had reached my breaking point and started yelling. My daughter tearfully still insisted in reply to my commands, “No Thank you - I am using my manners.” It was humbling to realize that indeed I had lost my manners and this tiny little creature was behaving more graceful and mature in the face of confrontation than I. “A new product, Stikwood, is made by shaving aged and weathered wood planks into 1/8”-thick panels backed with peel and stick adhesive strips.” wallpaper is a great option. New technologies have made temporary wallpaper easy to hang and remove without damaging walls. Another wallcovering making a comeback is wood paneling. A new product, Stikwood, is made by shaving aged and weathered wood planks into 1/8”-thick panels backed with peel and stick adhesive strips. Stikwood provides the illusion of custom woodwork at a fraction of the price. Stikwood is also a green product, free from VOC (volatile organic compounds) emissions. Removable panels are a great way to add architectural interest to walls. They not only provide texture and shape, but may be painted to match or contrast other walls in a room. Two cutting-edge companies, Inhabit Wall Panels and WallArt 3d Panels, manufacture these panels from fiber that’s left over after juice is removed from sugar cane. The fiber, known as molded bagasse, is 100% biodegradable, making it an eco-friendly option. Next time you want to spice up your walls, think outside the paint can. It’s super important to use and keep your supplies sanitized, nothing like a little infection to wait months to find out you have ruined all that hard work and patience. Instructions: Heat water to 180 degrees, add honey, keep at 180 degrees for 20 minutes, put in clean and sanitized carboy and cool to room temperature 60 degrees is ideal if possible. Add macerated fruit to carboy and add yeast, to airlock device. Store in cool dark room for 30 days or more. For best results start with this yeast: https://www.wyeastlab.com/ he_c_yeaststrain_detail.cfm?ID=62 and then after initial fermentation (about a month or so) https://www. wyeastlab.com/hb_yeaststrain_detail. cfm?ID=146 Go to wyeast.com order https://www. wyeastlab.com/hb_yeaststrain.cfm they also have an amazing pitch rate and growth calculator to help you understand your ratios for product to

I should mention that I have allowed very few fermentations in my home outside of my own kitchen, mostly because my husband is a professional and we would never be able to replicate what he likes to do at work in my home (and I know he’d try) so I’ve kept most of the fermenting to pickles, sourdoughs, and kombucha. Which I’m actually seeing a lot more retail bars selling by the pint which is super cool for this hippie mama. I’ve consulted a bit with Michael King and have a bunch of great resources and a super simple recipe that I think most of you can replicate with a few pounds of berries or fruit gathered in the great 49th state. Please let us know what you make and your results! Hoochie Mamas of Amalga Questions answered by Misty L. Smith Can you tell me about the Hoochie Mamas? How did you all get together and decide to start volunteering as a group? Does everyone know each other outside of the volunteer group?

outside of “derby season”.

The Hoochie Mamas really came to be in 2010 when “founding member” Kari Reyes made Pink Hoochie Earrings for the group. The Pink Hoochies are kind of our thing now; we have earrings & zipper pulls. Next year (2015) we’ll be decorating our “shack” with them.

This year’s group has been together for two years now; I’ve been out there for five years.

I started in 2010 when Kari Reyes asked me to help out; I really had no idea what I had gotten myself into. From 2010 to 2014, the group has grown to a core of around 7 women, including myself. Basically we recruit friends to come out and give us a hand. As far as the current crew goes, I knew all but one of the women prior to their volunteering, and some of them knew each other before becoming a Hoochie Mama. Most of us socialize together

How long have the Hoochie Mamas been volunteering as a group at Amalga for the GNSD?

What kind of wildlife have you all seen other than fish during your time at Amalga? We’ve seen whales, outside through the cut, and this year there was a mink hanging around at low tide. Of course we see eagles, herons, kingfishers and ducks. Any favorite moments you want to share? I don’t have any one specific moment, but it is always so cool when we get a big fish turned in for weight. The anticipation of the derby participant that is weighing it in, the crew is very excited and somehow

there always seems to be a spectator or two. Amalga Harbor had the winning fish for three years running; 2010-2012. To date, those salmon are the largest I have ever seen and held. What are some unique things about volunteering at Amalga? Challenges? Everything about Amalga is unique, compared to the other weigh in stations. Our weigh in shack is located at the top of the ramp; we meet our derby participants down below on the dock and have to haul the fish up to the shack no matter what the tide. That can be a challenge when you have a cart full of fish and a minus tide.

We’ve been lucky over the last few years to have a couple of groups of local youth that come out and help. We’re also the only weigh in station that people can just drive right up to. We get quite a few people who come out just to see the fish. What’s your favorite thing volunteering for the GNSD?

about

Everything! I love that I am able to help support the Golden North Salmon Derby Scholarship Fund, I get to spend three days with a group of amazing women slinging fish all day and I’ve met some pretty awesome people out there!!

SHOULD YOU CONSIDER PROFESSIONAL ROPERTY MANAGEMENT? If you’ve owned income property for any length of time, you know that managing a rental can be financially rewarding. If you are new to rental management then you will see financial rewards, but there is a cost… Property management requires a large commitment of time and effort as well as $$$. While it may make sense to take the do-it-yourself approach if you’re a handy person, live close to your property, and don’t mind devoting many hours of your time, in many cases this just isn’t practical---especially if you hope to expand your business. With this in mind, maybe it is time for a professional property manager to work for you or with you and lessen the load. Call Julie @ Real Estate Service, Inc. and see what I can do to lessen your load and help you gain the rewards of Investment Income.

Featured Business Q&A

ROSIE AINZA

COLDWELL BANKER RACE REALTY

M

y name is Rosie Ainza. I work as a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Race Realty. I’ve had my license for almost 10 years. That’s just about one third of my life!

summer, Mike gave me the opportunity to continue on as a full time Realtor, thus giving me a strong potential to earn money for the orphanage I worked at in Kenya.

What do you enjoy about your business?

What is your specialty?

I enjoy making a difference. There can be a certain stigma about the real estate industry, some people even equate it to used car sales. However, I see the facilitation of property transactions as a much more honest and good-natured endeavor. My job is really about helping people in my community.

I absolutely adore working with first time homebuyers. Real estate transactions can be scary, especially for first time investors. I am a teacher at heart and greatly prefer quality, not quantity. I don’t like to pressure my clients either. I feel as though this approach lends well to assisting people who are new to home buying.

How long have you worked in your line of work? I’ve been in the real estate business for well over ten years. I began by putting together Comparative Market Analyses for a luxury brokerage in San Diego while I attended massage school. When I returned to Alaska I was hired with Coldwell Banker Race Realty.

What’s a typical day like for you?

How did your career get to this point?

I work hard to play hard. My hours in the office and around town with my clients can be long, but I try my best to make time for outdoor fun with my friends and family. Kayaking, hiking, skiing, running, and so on are what I do to combat daily stress and fatigue. Breakfast is also important!

Upon my hire at Race Realty, eons ago, my broker at the time (and mentor for life) Mike Race, saw potential in me that I hadn’t yet figured out. He facilitated my licensure and imparted priceless knowledge to me. I took a long pilgrimage abroad and ended up in East Africa this past winter working at Agape Hope Children’s Center, an orphanage in Kenya. When I returned from Africa this

My good friends, the Browns, had been living in a town home rental in a neighborhood without a lot of places for their two young boys to play. I helped them purchase their first home, a darling split level in a wonderful neighborhood. Seeing their pride and enjoyment, with the boys and their dog running in the yard, was really one of my

What’s your proudest business achievement?

proudest moments. How long have you lived in Alaska? I’ve lived in Juneau for 23 years, since my family relocated from San Diego, CA when I was 8 years old. I have spent some time away here and there either backpacking, volunteering, or going to school. But my roots are absolutely in SE Alaska. My mom always says moving to Juneau was the best thing her and my dad have ever done for me. What is your favorite thing about living here? The saltwater, mountains, and forest! I’ve traveled through many amazing countries, but we live in the COOLEST place on earth. The community is also pretty awesome as well. I can’t begin to describe the depth of friendship I’ve been lucky enough to reach with such astonishing women and men. What kind of hobbies do you have? Or what do you do for fun?

places. I feel especially lucky to have the opportunity to see other communities around Alaska and gain a deeper knowledge of local cultures and indigenous life. Where is your home away from home? Nairobi, Kenya!! My surrogate mom and dad, the founders of the Agape Children’s Center, frequently urge me to “come home”. While I can’t go back for a little while, I am trying my best to continue to help the children I grew so fond of. I have promised to donate 10% of my net real estate commission to the orphanage and school which I call my second home.

I love being outdoors. I also love to see new
