Combined Paid & Organic Reporting Dimensions Earlier this week Google announced a new addition to the dimension tab in Adwords, allowing advertisers to view both paid and organic performance for searches where an ad appears. Advertisers for the first time will be able to see side by side how SEO and PPC work together in terms of driving traffic to an advertiser’s website:

In order to obtain this data an advertiser will need to link their Google Adwords and Google Webmaster Tools accounts together, if this has not already been done. Read more about what impact this has on Search and how some experts in the field view this recent update from Google in this Econsultancy article:

Matt Cutts says NoFollow for Infographics & Widgets Matt Cutts released a video last week, August 12th, discussing best practice for infographics and widgets. In the wake of the Interflora fallout many SEO link building strategies have come to rely upon infographics, and their associated widgets, as an alternative solution. The buzzword for the last few months has been Content Marketing and what better way is there to attract users to your content than by simplifying and visualising with colours and graphics. Matt Cutts warns that while this is not unacceptable; this should not be your only link building option and site owners should exercise caution with widget links and when linking to infographics. He suggests use of nofollow links which implies to search engines that you do not trust the site at the other end of the link.

“I would not rely on widgets and infographics as your primary source to gather links, and I would recommend putting a nofollow, especially with widgets,” - Matt Cutts, August 2013 To many people this is nothing new; Matt Cutts discussed his stance on infographics in an interview with Eric Enge in July of last year when he explained that infographics themselves are not the problem; the issue is inaccurate content and deceptive linking strategies. “In principle, there’s nothing wrong with the concept of an infographic. What concerns me is the types of things that people are doing with them. The infographic may be neat, but if the information it’s based on is simply wrong, then it’s misleading… people don’t always realize what they are linking to when they reprint these infographics.” - Matt Cutts, July 2012 Nothing has really changed in his opinion or in what is considered to be SEO Best Practice for infographics and widgets. The key take away from this latest video is that Matt Cutts has felt the need to repeat a statement he had made only 13 months previously and to add it to official Google Webmaster Tools Guidelines. Can the conclusion be drawn that post-Interflora we have seen a significant increase in infographics? Can we expect the next statement from Matt Cutts to bring the infographic and widget craze to an end? For now it seems the message is proceed with caution. For the future (and as always); it’s all about the content.
