Google Combating Link Networks in Europe This year we have witnessed Google cracking down on link networks across Europe. The aim is to eliminate spammy link schemes and penalise those who use these link networks to gain an unfair advantage. In late January, Google’s head of search spam, Matt Cutts, announced to take action against Buzzea, a French link network, which was violating against Google’s quality guidelines. Following the take down, in early February Matt Cutts then tweeted: “This week we took action on a German agency's link network/clients. More to come in Germany.” And more recently two Polish link networks have been penalised because of similar activities.

Not only is Google coming down like a ton of bricks on these link networks but agencies and their clients will also feel the wrath of Google. Going forward it will be interesting to see which country Google is going to crack down on next, but in the meantime make sure to stay well away from potential link networks.

Twitter to Include Promoted Accounts in Search Results Twitter announced this week the launch of a new feature, which gives Promoted Accounts more prominence by including them in search results. Promoted Accounts used to only appear in home timelines and in the “Who to follow” list but now users will come across them in search results. There are a few target options available for businesses to reach more people, which include interests, geography and gender. Twitter confirms they “select relevant search queries for presenting Promoted Accounts based on an advertiser’s targeting choices, so no additional action is required for your business to access this capability.”
