Why Russian Brands Dominate Domestic Online Market When it comes to the online market in Russia, there are three standout brands that have some form of equivalent in the western world, yet remain market leaders in their native land. In the Search world this is represented by Yandex, that commands 62% market share vs. Google’s 27%, Mail.ru for mail service providers and VKontakte for Social media. Mail.ru now boasts in excess of 100M users, with this set to increase following expansion into the US and for VKontakte the disparity between it and Facebook is even greater than that of Yandex and Google, at 60M users vs just 10M for Facebook. This market domination is largely attributed to native companies having a better grasp of local nuances and therefore being able to target users accordingly, in addition to offering services that are more in line with their needs and wants. Mail.ru highlights this through owning the country’s second largest social network, as well as offering games and instant messaging. As far as Search is concerned, the incorporation of tens of minority languages in Yandex represents a more intuitive and inclusive search engine than the alternatives. Furthermore, to date, western penetration of the Russian market has been reluctant at best, so it appears the market leaders are unlikely to be knocked of their perches any time soon.

Bing Ads to copy Google Enhanced Campaign in September This week Bing ads announced that they are listening to customers and is creating a simpler Bing Ads. Essentially, beginning in September, Bing Ads will combine all tablet volume into our desktop/laptop category. By combining tablets with desktops/laptops and providing bid modifiers, advertisers will see better efficiency and reach more customers, with little or no change to their ad spend for each conversion. However, Bing Ads is going to continue to ensure that customers retain the ability to better manage their return on ad spend goals. Advertisers will maintain the ability to control tablet traffic with bid modifiers that will run from -20 percent to +300 percent on bids. In addition to bid modifiers across tablets/laptops/desktops, Bing Ads will continue to offer a full suite of controls for mobile, such as ‘if mobile’ landing pages, mobile preference and bid modifiers which allow users to finely tune smartphone campaigns.

Baidu being taken on by Qihoo 360 Search Baidu’s dominance in China is currently being threatened: Qihoo 360 Search has taken a large chunk of search engine market share from Baidu this year. Building on their strong grounding in the security apps space as they are China’s largest Internet security provider, 360 Search now has market share of 25%, resulting in Baidu’s previously dominant 75% falling to just 58%. In particular, Qihoo reported that their revenue growth is linked to their growing search business. In addition to this, their mobile search share rose from 23% to 25% in Q1. An interesting perspective on this is that the threat from Qihoo means that Baidu consistently need to innovate and invest to retain dominance amongst the competition. This is in contrast to Google’s total dominance in other markets which is not threatened to the same extent by the market share of other search providers.

Image ads focus for Naver Naver, Korea’s biggest search engine, has launched a new image-oriented search ad platform targeting mobile users. This is the equivalent of Google’s product listing ads and Naver are also calling this PLAs. The system is currently focused on fashion, displaying images which occupy a large proportion of the search results page on mobile devices. Users can then select an image which will enlarge it as a preview on the mobile screen and have the option to click through to the retail website. An intuitive aspect is the ability to swipe between enlarged images. This is particularly pertinent as Google has higher mobile search market share in South Korea, due to the prevalence of Android devices. Naver have developed a search results solution solely for mobile device use.
