Why You Won’t See ‘World Cup’ Ads On Google With the World Cup now in full swing, Google Trends data shows that we can expect there to be a huge surge in Search Volumes, based on data from the previous two World Cups (2006 & 2010). Advertises may have deemed this a great oppurtunity to bid on Word Cup related terms, however Google have enforced a strict policy on third party trademarked terms. Instead of trigegering Ads, terms such as ‘World Cup’ & ‘Brazil 2014’ are met with, what Google refer to as, the ‘OneBox’; an at-a-glance view of upcoming fixtures, results etc. For advertisers to stand a chance of appearing on World Cup related terms, they will have to get very creative in order to get ahead of the ‘OneBox’ as well as Google’s generous trademark protections.

Ads to soon appear in Google Streetview? Google have been granted a US Patent this week which seems to suggest there will soon be Adwords ads appearing in Google Streetview. The ads will be location based and be sensitive to which parts of the image users are interested in (it is not yet clear what techonology underpins this). The model described in the patent is auction and algorithm based so advertisers will be competing for ad space, made even more complex by the inclusion of any user search history that is available. This move demonstrates Google’s commitment to context-based advertising.
