Facebook Say No to Search Engine Plans (For Now?) – 13th March 2013 Earlier this week at SMX West Keynote, Grady Burnett, Vice President of Global Marketing Solutions of Facebook, was claimed Facebook have no plans to launch an external search engine to compete with either Google or Microsoft Bing. He continues within this live blog to state that Facebook are focused on search from within Facebook only through Graph Search. While this may be comforting news for Google, it will be interesting to see how this materialises in the coming years, and how Graph Search develops. While Facebook still have a partnership with Bing, they may not feel the need to venture into this space and invest in an external search engine. If Graph Search proves to be a success further down the line, will Facebook decide to push into this market and start challenging Google and Bing? Only time will tell…

Penguin/Panda Algorithm Updates – 12th March 2013 In view of the recent updates and penalties that happened on the back of the Interflora saga (http://emergingspaces.co.uk/search-lately - 79 - Ashley Lindley's article), there have been warnings from the head of Google's Webspam Team, Matt Cutts, about the upcoming algorithm updates. He stated, at the SMX West conference yesterday, there will be a Penguin update in 2013, and that it will be big. There are no further details as such. He also stated there will be a Panda update in the coming week, so watch out for this Friday (15th March) or next Monday 18th March). All these updates are in view of protecting the searchers according to Google. They do not 'want low quality experience merchants to be ranking in the search results' because they manipulated the SERPs and therefore violated the Google Guidelines. This Penguin update is likely to take place within Q2 of 2013, since there have been no Penguin updates since October 2012. -

What does that mean for Google in terms of the search engine market?
