Google Announced Launch of Penguin 2.0 - 13th May 2013 After the launch of Google’s Penguin 1.0 in April 2012, and two algorithm updates in May and October 2012, Matt Cutts, the head of Google’s webspam team, has confirmed yet another Penguin update which is due sometime within the next few weeks. Cutts suggested that the forthcoming update would be hugely significant and probably one of the most talked about Google updates of this year as it involves a major change to the Google algorithm.

Penguin is designed to penalise websites that use manipulative link building techniques in order to improve their search result rankings and visibility. Hence, websites with over optimised anchor texts and unnatural linking profile were among the websites hit hardest by previous Penguin updates. Like the previous algorithm changes, the upcoming Penguin 2.0 update is aimed at decreasing SERP rankings of websites using SEO tactics that violate the Google Webmaster Guidelines. With every update of the Penguin algorithm, Google has significantly increased its ability to detect and act upon websites with unusual linking patterns. It is fair to say that the new algorithm change is going to have a bigger impact than the previous ones; accordingly it becomes more and more important to avoid spammy link building techniques and develop a natural and well-balanced link profile. Once again, there will be winners and losers, however, if a website is in compliance with the Google guidelines of best practice SEO, it is unlikely that a website of this kind will lose SERP rankings and be negatively affected by the new algorithm change.
