He has always dreamed of opening his own retail business and expressing his passion for products, customer service and merchandising. The definition of success in the hospitality industry is changing. First Word from the Publisher Sue Hodgson

We know the weather this summer has been somewhat unpredictable across Canada, but here in Victoria we have had a glorious season. It's mid-September as I write this, and the days are still warm, but there is a slight chill in the air as the nights approach, so we know fall is almost here.

I lament the end of summer because fall generally means less outdoor time and less sunshine. Sometimes it can be a bit of a letdown when things change. All you can think about is how good you had it and how much fun you used to have. You look at the times you're in now and they just aren't the same. It can make you sad.

Yes, that's one way you can look at it. Or you can look forward to everything a new season has to offer! Autumn brings with it woolen scarves, crisp breezes, warm fuzzy jackets, apple cider and the start of the football season.

Autumn may not be summer, but it's beautiful in its own way.

Just as the seasons in nature change, the seasons of life change as well. Change makes you flexible. Being stubborn and resistant to new things will make a normally stressful situation even more so, whereas change helps you to be fluid and go with the flow. Believe it or not, change can make you smarter: if things never changed, you would never learn anything new. Every time you learn a new skill, even if it's just how to adapt, you become a little smarter.

This year I've certainly had my plate full of changes and, with the upcoming season, there are more to come … but that's for another article!

Change comes in different ways and reminds us that anything is possible. Looking back, I realize that all the good things in my life are the results of changes that occurred in the past. I hope you can find a way to embrace the beauty of the new season. Know that nothing stays the same forever, and that's actually a good thing!

A Cup of Kindness We can all be inspired to create more kindness in the world by sharing the acts of kindness we receive. Recently, we asked Seaside readers to write in with their stories. Here is a sampling.

A few weeks ago a gentleman outside Save-On-Foods in Sidney offered to take my cart back for me as I was unloading my groceries into my car. I'm young and clearly able to do it myself, and yet he still offered. He said he was "going that way anyways." The thoughtfulness I encounter in Sidney daily is heartwarming.

Lydia A. Something that happened to me this spring really touched my heart and relieved my mind tremendously. I had been out on my recumbent trike riding around the Canoe Cove area, and when I got home realized that somewhere on my ride all my important documents (e.g., Driver's License, credit card, etc) had spilled out.

My husband and I immediately and carefully retraced our route, and found nothing at all. We got back home and were discussing who to notify first when there was a knock at our door, and it was our next door neighbour. In his hand he had all the cards that had spilled out! He told us that a woman had come and knocked on his door, explaining that she had found a number of important cards spilled out on the road at the end of her driveway and had come to the address on the cards to return them to me. When there was no response to her knock on our door she

tried our neighbour's door next. What a blessed relief! She left no name or contact information so I've not known who to thank, but she gave me a great gift of kindness that I will never forget.

Sharon C. I was shopping at Thrify's and the women in front of me bought a fruit or vegetable I had never seen before. The cashier knew about it and said "we get them in very rarely and you are lucky to get some." I asked what they were called and how they taste. We had a fun conversation and I thought how lucky I am to live in this community for these random chats of kindness with strangers. Well, at the end I learned the "similarto-an-orange-looking tomato" is called a persimmon. The customer paid, and then turned around and gave me one with the comment "here; try one and enjoy." So our chat turned into a random act of kindness.

Susi M. I had a guy help me find a part in the salvage yard for our truck.

He was kind enough to look in the yard to see if he could locate the part I needed because none were listed in his inventory.

What comes to mind when you think of a charcuterie board? Is it a grand wooden board with an enticing array of cheese, crackers, cured meats and fruit, all looking so tempting?

Times have changed and boards have transformed into “Sharing Boards." Perfect for presenting everything from a full meal to appetizers and beverages, the possibilities are endless.

First a little board background! The traditional board – this is what you expect when you see a board. All the elements are arranged to present everything like a mosaic. Then you have the buffet board – more interactive with lots of little dishes filled with toppings to build your own meal. Finally, the spread, when the board needs to have friends to keep it company – two or more boards that all work together with lots of options.

THE CHILI BOARD As the weather cools, heartier meals take centre stage. Enter the chili board, a perfect example of a buffet and a spreading board. It expanded into two boards, using an array of small dishes to showcase grated cheeses, diced onions and tomatoes, some cilantro, nacho chips/tortilla strips and don’t forget the sour cream! The options for chili toppings are as creative as you desire. Pairing it with warm cheese garlic loaf, cornbread or thick slices of Texas toast adds an extra layer to your board. This setup is great for a family dinner or casual get together with friends. Whether you're hosting a large gathering or a smaller group, it will please everyone.

THE BRUNCH BOARD We created a board that would be great for a gathering or for the family on a weekend.

This option has endless possibilities, with hot and cold foods, some pre-made and others cooked closer to serving time. Think bagels with cream cheese, homemade cinnamon rolls, yogurt with granola and berries to make personalized parfaits, along with an assortment of fresh fruit. The brunch board is remarkably straightforward to put together, with many items readily available at your local grocery store. Things to consider adding to your brunch board can be breakfast meats, hash brown patties, scrambled eggs in a stunning serving dish and don’t forget the beverages … who can resist a mimosa?

THE BRUSCHETTA BOARD The focus shifts to an assortment of smaller dishes for our bruschetta board, starting with great toasted bread as the base. The carefully selected toppings were endless and worked best in these little round dishes scattered about the board. We featured our Cucina and Amore Red Pepper/Artichoke Bruschetta and Belazu Truffle/Artichoke Tapenade to help with the prep work. Add in some roasted red peppers, nuts, pesto and balsamic vinegar to drizzle on prosciutto and complement with creamy whipped feta and flavourful Boursin Cheese. No shortage of additions to include - think melon, artichoke hearts, parmesan or mozzarella, caramelized onions and more.

Remember, crafting a sharing board is not a complex endeavor. It’s about deconstructing the meal, arranging it in piles or little bowls/dishes and adorning it with simple garnishes like basil, cilantro or parsley. For those seeking guidance, there are some invaluable resources like Around the Board, The Cheese Board Deck and That Cheese Plate Wants to Party, which offer step-by-step instructions, recipes and handy shopping lists.

Wine Pairings

Brunch Board Pairings – How you'll pair wines with your Brunch Board will depend on whether you're taking this in the creamy dairy and sweet baked goods direction or a classic bagels and lox direction – or both.

Foods with sweetness want to be balanced with something crisp, and foods with dairy don't need more lactic acid, so steer clear of buttery chardonnay here. They will be too much of a muchness. Look instead for a dry, crisp Provencal rosé, a cool-climate sauvignon blanc, or, of course, brut sparkling wine is always appropriate.

If you're going the lox and capers direction, the advice is the opposite: look for something with a bit of sweetness and a heavier mouth-feel in the wine, to help cut the acidity. Now that buttery chardonnay comes into its own, and you'd want to look at a warmer-climate sauvignon blanc. If you're mixing up mimosas, nothing beats fresh-squeezed juice, but if that's giving you sticker shock, here's a bartender trick: make a citrus stock by boiling and straining the used rinds to extract the essential oils.

Chili Board Pairings – For foods with spice, whether it's a chili board or take-out, look for mediumbodied white wines with bright but subdued acidity and a bit of residual sugar. A bit of sweetness takes away the sharp bite of spices and highlights their complexity. Riesling and gewurztraminer are good bets and come in at an entertaining-friendly price point and are easy to source locally; if you want something a bit special, look for sweet Spanish wines from Málaga, especially those made with Pedro Ximénez and moscatel grapes, or try a sherry pairing. If you need to go red, go for something light bodied with fresh fruit aromatics, something like a Spanish garnacha (French grenache) or a local B.C. gamay noir.

Bruschetta Board Pairings – In northern Italy, the classic bruschetta pairing is vermentino. It's a dry, medium-bodied white wine, and it can pick up aromatics of citrus, stone and green olive that make something as simple as Tuscan bread and olive oil come alive. If you're looking for a red wine, head in the direction of sangiovese. While it's the backbone of chianti (and that's an option), I'm a fan of 100% sangiovese, with its cherry and leather notes. Locally, my strong option is that hybrid varietals like marechal foch don't make a cellar-worthy wine, but they do make a simple, rustic, bright "peasant-style" red that is actually a great pairing here.

Profitability: More Than Dollars & Cents

As a Saanich Peninsula resident for 35 years, I've seen a lot of changes which have had both positive and negative effects in our community. Most negative changes are a result of external forces: economic (the high cost of housing), or societal (the opioid crisis), whereas positive change is most often due to the efforts of an individual or group within our community. It was with this perspective that my wife and partner Alice Bacon and I decided to open Brentwood Bay Village Empourium in 2015. The plan was to fill what we perceived as underserved needs at that time: a neighbourhood gathering place, a venue to showcase local art and music along with the opportunity for a little retail therapy.

Looking back at our initial business plan, it's surprising to realize that we've made it as far as we have. Since opening, we've come to understand that the key to starting and operating a successful business largely depends on having access to the resources to pay for all the mistakes you're going to make.

When we moved into what was then known as Trafalgar Square, the mall was nearly half empty. Like most outlying villages and towns, Brentwood Bay's retail trade was in serious decline. Had we more fully understood the challenges that lay ahead we might never have taken the leap, but we were driven by the belief that a healthy business community is essential to the well-being and vibrancy of the community it serves. The support we've had from our community over the past eight years confirms this belief.

It's often said that what doesn't kill us makes us stronger.

Sometimes, however, it simply mutates and keeps trying. Surviving the first year of COVID-19 proved anticlimactic in comparison to what was to follow: labour shortages, the spiralling cost of living and rolling supply chain shortages. These factors continue to exert tremendous strain on small independent service-based businesses in particular and have forced many to reconsider their goals and ultimately their purpose.

At a time when there are fewer opportunities for us to serve our community, we see the value of providing local employment opportunities for people of all ages. Spending formative time in the service of others contributes to a kinder and more tolerant world view. We cherish the relationships we've formed with our ever-changing work family. Watching young students who come to work for us grow into confident and caring adults is a genuine privilege. So is acknowledging the joyful and tearful milestones in our customers' lives. Ours is a front row seat to the ebb and flow of our community.

Everyone has their own definition of success. For us and many other small independent operators, the hospitality business has become much more closely aligned with the values of social enterprise. While the financial rewards may be small, serving our community with the same spirit as others do in their chosen ways generates currency of a different and ultimately greater value.

BRINGING HEAT TO A REMOTE COMMUNITY

A Heartwarming Success

Bella Bella, home of the

Heiltsuk Nation, is a remote coastal community located almost 200 kilometres north of Vancouver Island. Until recently, most of the homes were heated with oil – which was expensive and unpredictable, given the isolation of the island. But the Nation was eager to transition away from fossil fuels and toward clean energy. "We were contacted by

Heiltsuk representatives, who were doing a feasibility study on heat pumps," explains Don Gulevich, owner of local company Coastal Heat Pumps.

"We discussed how they were currently heating, what they wanted to do, and what their budget constraints were – and decided the best value would be a ductless heat pump system."

Don says the community can only be reached by a 12-hour ferry ride, so technicians had to make sure that all the necessary equipment was brought with them. "It was a huge undertaking," he adds. "The parts and components and design work to be done, the number of people involved and the remote nature of the community were all challenges."

According to residents, it's been a life-changing project. "One woman was in her mid-80s," says Don, "and when the technician started up the heat she burst into tears – it was the first time in 20 years that she had heating." Another resident explained that their children were no longer coughing, their colds were gone, and there was money in the hydro account for the first time ever.

"What happens when hydro or oil bills are really high, is that people turn the heat off or turn it down," explains Don. "It brings cold temperatures into the house; we've even seen it so cold that it condensates where the outside wall meets the ceiling and it forms black mold. With the heat pumps, there's air flow and warmth, the mold disappears, and the savings are amazing.

People are just blown away.

"It's absolutely heartwarming; we were changing people's lives," says Don. "It was also an act of reconciliation: we worked side by side with the Heiltsuk Nation.

We couldn't have done it without their help, and they couldn't have done it without ours. We made a lot of friendships and even had a reconciliation ceremony with some of the members," he adds.

"It's been a very special project; we alternated our crews, so each technician had at least two trips going in, and can see the positive impact they're having on people."

One of the technicians, Jordan Caton – now Director of Operations – installed many of the units in Bella Bella and now coordinates the entire project. "It's a complete honour to be a part of it," says Jordan. "The whole coordination team – especially Pam Wilson on the Bella Bella side – it wouldn't be possible without them.

Jordan says it's been especially meaningful to see the health improvements in the residents. "People would be coughing or sick, there was mold in the houses, a lack of air flow and a lack of heating. We've done over 300 homes now, making the houses healthy to live in and preventing illness; it's been extremely rewarding." Jordan is grateful for the dedication of the technicians, who often worked 10- and 12-hour days, into the night, installing the systems in snow, sleet and rain.

"Every heat pump we install has a meaning behind it," he adds.

"When we first started the project, people were heating their homes with the oven door open; there was black mold all throughout the corners of the house, they were using blankets in doorways to corral the heat from the space heater or oven. These were the conditions they'd lived with for so long. Things changed so drastically for the community and the health of the residents – it really hit close to home."

It's also a great case study for future projects: Jordan says they're already in conversation with other Indigenous communities. "It's a really neat model, how it was created," he explains. "Bella Bella even won Clean Energy B.C.'s Community of the Year award, as a result of the project." Altogether, the initiative is responsible for removing 700 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually, the equivalent of taking 220 cars off the road every year. Other communities will no doubt be looking to the Heiltsuk framework as an example of resounding success.

UNIQUE BUSINESSES, UNIQUE CHALLENGES The past few years, as well as the current economic environment, have presented businesses with unique challenges, many of which they have never faced before. The impacts of these challenges vary greatly by industry, location and financial strength.

One of the most common needs business owners face across different types of businesses and industries is access to financial capital. Where can businesses go to obtain financing or other types of funding?

Given my role as a business account manager for a major financial institution, my obvious first answer is going to be go see your business banker. There are circumstances, however, where it is not always possible to qualify for financing from your bank. This will be unique to each business and business owner, and the specific reason or purpose for which the funds are required. Also keep in mind, through your bank, there may be special, segment-specific opportunities.

I would encourage all business owners to explore other opportunities that may be available for their business. Specifically, business owners should make themselves aware of opportunities, such as: 1. BC Employer Training Grant through WorkBC (up to $10,000 per employee and up to $300,000 per year) – check workbc.ca/find-loans-and-grants.

2. Small Business BC's website and the various grant opportunities at www.smallbusinessbc.ca, where there are multiple Provincial grant opportunities and links to Federal Programs.

3. Federal grant programs through the Government of Canada – Business Benefits Finder: https://innovation.ised-isde.canada.ca/innovation 4. The Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) also offers grants in addition to traditional financing options and educational resources for entrepreneurs. Visit www.bdc.ca/en.

Additionally, your business banker may be able to provide you with access to unique resources to access other grant or loan opportunities.

For those business owners who were able to take advantage of the Government of Canada's CEBA (Canada Emergency Business Account) program, they will want to be paying extra attention in the coming weeks and months to ensure they do not miss important deadlines. The Federal Government announced changes to this program on September 14, 2023, extending the repayment deadline to qualify for partial loan forgiveness from December 31, 2023, to January 18, 2024. Missing this repayment deadline could result in the loss of $10,000 or $20,000 in loan forgiveness, depending on the amount your business borrowed. Be sure to discuss your CEBA loan status with your banker.

Simply Pure Ice & Water Mark Unsworth changed careers from liquor to filtered water in 2003.

Mark and his wife Sharon arrived in Victoria in 2016, wandering into Simply Pure for water, which led to opening Simply Pure Water on Hillside Avenue in 2017, and introducing Alkaline water in 5 gallon jugs for water coolers.

On April 16, 2021 Mark suffered a stroke, followed quickly by two more, leaving him almost completely paralyzed on the right side. Five weeks in the hospital with non-stop therapy set him on the road for recovery, and fresh out of the hospital Mark received a call that the water store in Sidney was for sale.

Mark and Sharon have loved Sidney since the first time they visited the town, and declared it’s where they would retire one day. The new venture gives Mark the inspiration to hop on his bike and ride to work every day to try to get back to 100%, while growing the business at the same time.

On October 12, the Charlie White Theatre audience will be treated to the release of Miss Emily’s third studio album, “Defined By Love.” In her upcoming Sidney appearance, Miss Emily – a 2022 Juno nominee - will be joined on stage by a backing band that features some of Canada’s most sought-after blues & soul musicians.

Since 2019, Miss Emily has brought the house down at venues across Canada, the US, the United Kingdom and Europe.

Now she’s coming to Sidney with a show that will include the new album start-to-finish as well as fan favourites and a few special surprises. Your Go-To Guide for Fall Skin Health As the temperatures drop and the days get shorter, it's time to transition your skincare routine to accommodate the fall season. Cooler weather brings its own set of challenges for your skin, including cooler, drier air and potential skin sensitivities. To keep your complexion radiant and healthy, it's essential to adapt your skincare routine accordingly.

One of the most significant challenges our skin faces during the fall is dehydration. Post-summer humidity drops and crisper air can lead to dry, flakey, tight-feeling skin. To combat this, adapt to a more hydrating cleanser rather than a gel and use a moisturizer that's richer and more nourishing, adding a few drops of facial oil to it or layered underneath for added hydration. Look for products with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, nourishing oils and ceramides which will help lock in moisture and avoid trans-epidermal water loss.

Exfoliation is an important skin care step all year, but in the fall, it's essential to be gentle. Switch to a milder exfoliant and reduce the frequency of exfoliation to prevent over-drying and irritation. Adding in a retinol this time of year (with the recommended usage and percentage from your skincare professional of course) is also key for cellular turnover, along with its fabulous anti-aging benefits. Always consult your esthetician before using any active ingredients!

Don't put away your sunscreen just because summer is over! SPF protection is a 365-day-a-year product, and although we spend less time outside, UV rays are still present in the fall and they can damage your skin and cause premature aging just as much as during the summer. Opt for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and apply it daily, even on cloudy days. Bonus if it has blue light

protection, if you're someone who works in front of screens all day.

Consider using a creamy or oil-based cleanser in the fall. These cleansers can help remove makeup and impurities while maintaining your skin's moisture barrier. Avoid harsh, drying cleansers that can strip your skin of its natural oils, and be gentle with your skin, especially if it's sensitive.

Antioxidants, like vitamin C and E, can help protect your skin from environmental damage and free radical damage. Apply your vitamin C serum daily after cleaning and before layering other serums. Not only will it help brighten your skin, but it also aids in preventing future pigmentation issues.

Cooler weather often exacerbates certain skin conditions, such as eczema and rosacea, due to the dry air and temperature fluctuations.

If you have sensitive skin or a specific skin concern, consult your esthetician for personalized advice and treatment options. This time of year is also a good time for in-studio skin procedures such as laser and higher-percentage chemical peels that can't be done during the summer.

Your healthiest skin starts from within. Maintaining a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, anti-inflammatory ingredients and omega-3 fatty acids will nourish your skin from the inside out. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water is also crucial for a glowing complexion, keeping your pillow case freshly washed and making sure all makeup is removed before your nightly routine will boost your skin health and give it what it needs.

Take in the changes of the seasons; it's an opportunity to shift into more self care on the shorter days while staying connected and on top of your routine.

Lessons from a Fallen Woman Just before Halloween on a rainy, dull, Sunday morning, I was rushing to get out the recycling, a bag in each hand. Suddenly my feet slipped and I flew into the air, coming down with a thud. I thought: "This can't be happening to me." I had spent much of my academic life studying falls and how to prevent them!

After being rescued, with a fractured elbow and pelvis, I thought about the many causes of falls and wondered how these factors contributed to mine. My behaviour that day put me at risk. I was hurrying and not paying attention to the wet slippery sidewalk. Other risky behaviors include climbing ladders or standing on kitchen chairs to reach shelves. Drinking alcohol or getting up too fast also puts a person at risk.

The environment was also a major factor in my fall: the walkway was slick with rain, moss, mildew and wet leaves. The lighting was poor because of the dreary day. Other environmental risks can be faulty stairs, the lack of appropriate handrails, and cracks in the sidewalk – especially small ones that aren't clearly visible. Slippery rugs, wires, cords and glare all contribute to falls as well.

Exercise, or lack of it, puts people at greater risk of a fall. Indeed, my attendance at my Aquafit class had petered off and I was not in peak physical shape. Had I been, I might have been able to recover from the fall more easily and could have prevented injury when I fell.

Exercise such as Tai Chi that promotes balance and muscle strength is known to reduce falls and related injuries.

Clothing and footwear also cause falls. I had on a pair of sandals

with a raised heel and a slippery sole, but I knew that the best kind of footwear was firm-fitting shoes with non-skid soles. Others fall because they trip over a lengthy nightgown … we tend to shrink as we age. Taking diuretics (water pills) can cause one's feet to shrink and the comfy bedroom slippers you once wore are now a sloppy hazard.

Health issues also contribute to falls: if you have high or low blood pressure, Parkinson's disease, a stroke or other physical health challenges, you will be more likely to fall. I didn't have any of those but I do have osteoporosis. While it didn't contribute to the fall, it certainly did contribute to my injuries.

After I fell I tried calling for help. For 45 minutes I lay in the rain until a neighbour up the road heard me. An alerting device or even my cell phone would have enabled me to get help sooner.

So: bad choice of shoes, slippery walkway, poor muscle strength and osteoporosis … all factors leading to my injury. How has this changed my life?

I try to match my shoes to the weather. I have my walkway power washed. I exercise regularly. I take Vitamin D and calcium daily to strengthen my bones. I had a handrail put in my shower. I walk more slowly, paying attention to what's ahead. Having had a fall, I am twice as likely to have another one and be seriously injured.

All the knowledge in the world doesn't prevent you from making mistakes –it's only if you put it into practise that you can make a difference.

BUTLER HAZELNUT FARM:

In a Nutshell – Delicious!

Awww, nuts! Just when you think you have hazelnuts all figured out, you discover you might not even have the name right – apparently in Europe they're typically called filberts.

But closer to home, here on the Saanich Peninsula, these mouthwatering morsels are known to many as Butler's hazelnuts.

Adele Crocker of Butler Hazelnut Farm shares: "We have six acres of hazelnut trees. We farm because we love it. Customers ask for our hazelnuts each year. We prepare them in a lot of different ways."

Adele is the daughter of Elizabeth (Liz) Butler and her late father Wilfred (Bud) Stephen Butler III who own the farm. Located along Central Saanich Road, Butler Hazelnut Farm, now in its sixth generation, offers hazelnuts in bulk either raw or dried, roasted, candy coated, beer nut seasoned, ground butter form, and as chocolate hazelnut bark.

Bud Butler purchased the 16-acre property in 1953 and began rotating a variety of berries and vegetables and later, hazelnuts. "We knew that hazelnuts grew well in Washington and Oregon," says Liz. "They also grow well here due to the climate on the Saanich Peninsula. We belonged to the Nut Growers Society of Washington, Oregon and B.C." The farm and the Butler name are well known in the community. There's Butler Crescent in the Keating area and the business Butler Concrete & Aggregate.

Bud grew up on the Butler homestead on Keating Cross Road where the Co-Op Grocery Store stands today. The importance of family history was right in his name, with Bud carrying the Wilfred Stephen name of both his father and grandfather.

He came from a long line of farmers, starting with his great grandfather, Captain George Stephen Butler, who came to Canada from England in 1862.

The farm is a family operation. Bud and Liz raised six children here, all of whom played a role on the farm while growing up.

Adele recalls: "I have good memories of working on the farm with my siblings. When we were in our teens, we'd be out in the fields cutting broccoli."

Starting with 100 trees, the hazelnut orchard expanded over time to the current 600. With more trees came a greater crop, and soon the Butlers realized they had far more than their family needed. "Once we started to have more than 200 pounds, we started to take the product to market," says Adele.

Three varieties are grown, one of which, interestingly enough, is the Butler hazelnut. While there's no connection with the name and this Peninsula family, the serendipitously named nut became a local favourite.

Pollination occurs in January and February when pollen-bearing catkins grow on the trees. "There are tassels that form on the tree. The wind blows them into the air and this pollinates other trees," relates Liz.

250-391-6294 Hazelnut harvesting is labour intensive as tons of matured hazelnuts need to be gathered, washed, dried and sorted. Over the years, family and friends have contributed to this effort. Adele, who is currently the sales manager, has lived on the property with her husband and children for 30 years. Her mom, despite her 87 years, is not slowing down and continues to manage the farm. "Mom will be out by 10 in the morning to eight at night," says Adele. "She still tends about a half-acre vegetable garden in front of the house."

"It's revitalizing watching plants grow and sharing them with others.

It's a great feeling to be able to eat what you grow," Liz enthuses.

During August, the nuts are gradually developing. Starting as green formations, they eventually mature, become brown, and by September, fall out of their husk coverings onto the ground below.

Compared to other nuts like the almond or cashew, the hazelnut can do well even in tough soil, drought or other challenging conditions.

"We have a good water supply here sourced from our deep onsite irrigation pond," comments Adele. "We've never watered the trees.

But the climate is changing, and the trees are showing signs of stress."

Cleaned and ready for distribution, the hazelnuts are then sorted into bulk inventories or made into other products.

Hazelnuts are known for their health benefits. A great source of vitamins B, C and E and other nutrients and minerals, hazelnuts are helpful in promoting heart health, reducing inflammation, strengthening bones, and boosting immunity. As Liz sums up: "Hazelnuts are good for you!"

OUT FOR AN … AUTUMN HIKE story and photos by Scottee Giles

Kanishay Park Dry leaves crunched below our boots and jackets were zipped a little higher against a crisp autumn breeze, the afternoon sun already low in the sky, as we set out for a hike into Kanishay Park. With family in town for a long weekend feast, our group ranged in age from six to 75 and this easygoing adventure was perfect for everyone.

We discovered a little-known stretch of wooded groves on the northernmost tip of the Peninsula marked by alder and arbutus, cedar and fir. Huge ferns, snowberry, wild rose and currant were changing into their red, orange and brown foliage. Birds, rabbits and squirrels darted about, stocking up for the winter months.

We entered from Kanishay Road, where wide sandy trails lined with blackberry bramble and thistle soon gave way to well-maintained gravel paths winding past beautiful horse farms into a thicket of hawthorn and mossy old maples.

We made up a scavenger hunt for the kids. Can you find a spinning spider with a bejewelled web? Or lichen, a mushroom, a burl on a trunk?

Coming out of the bushes onto Lands End Road, we decided to explore the Woodcreek Viewpoint a couple hundred metres to the east. Down another short trail and a set of wooden stairs we found a secret beach. We thought a porpoise was watching us, but it was just a resident stone formation at low tide. Kelp, shale and bone-white shells adorned the shoreline.

The young Métis man in our group gazed out across Satellite Channel to Salt Spring Island, one foot in the present, one in the past. Remembering his journey, I trailed my fingers in the sand, thinking of the third of 94 calls to action. We were quiet on the steep climb back up the hill past fallen logs and vines twisting overhead, thankful to have this time together and call this beautiful place home. Nature has a way of bringing perspective, and a step toward understanding truth and reconciliation can begin anywhere. Will kindness guide our path forward?

An Easy Way to Extend the Growing Season!

Growing food invigorates me. I hope it puts some pep in your step too! The late summer and early fall harvest season on our little 1.5-acre slice of "heaven on earth" in Brentwood Bay has been rewarding and life-giving once again.

As our daylight quota shortens and we anticipate first frost, it's presumed by many gardeners, even on balmy Vancouver Island, that weather dictates they stop growing food until spring rolls around.

I'd like to offer an idea to readers who can't get enough gardening and wish the colder months wouldn't cramp their gardening joy.

Perhaps this is the easiest way to cheat the seasons and create your own mini micro-climate; have you ever tried growing with the use of a hoop house?

The ultimate benefit of using a hoop house in our area is that you can garden a month earlier in the spring and continue a month later into the fall and winter months. Additionally, it's inexpensive to build and you can relocate a hoop house over a new garden bed in a few minutes!

A simple PVC Hoop House has done wonders for me. I'd like to share the benefits and a simple "DIY How To." There are lots of variations on the idea, but the simplest concept is bending PVC pipes, onto rebar sticking out of the soil, to form a skeleton frame and support – the gardener's choice of either Reemay Garden Cloth or clear poly.

Extending the season for everbearing strawberries has been one of the tastiest crops to enjoy with a hoop house. In spring, berries are generally setting in my hoop house before uncovered plants start to flower. On the other end of the season I've pulled back the Reemay Cloth to harvest ripe strawberries in NOVEMBER while it was snowing!

This past year I had another hoop house triumph growing garlic. I had just returned from Quesnel with an abundance of seed garlic in fall. All my outdoor garlic had been planted a month earlier. I decided to try something out on December 1. In about 20 minutes, I built a hoop house over a raised garden bed that's four by two feet in our garden. Then, I planted six rows (about 240 head) of the seed garlic 48 SEASIDEMAGAZINE.CA | OCTOBER 2023

and draped it with clear poly. The garlic in the hoop house easily sprouted in the short, dark days of winter and, by spring, had surpassed the girth and height of my outdoor, uncovered garlic which I'd planted one month earlier.

This was a stunning achievement for the hoop house!

Here's How to Build One Yourself Equipment Needed • Hammer Materials Needed • Pieces of 10 mm rebar – two-foot lengths are best • Pieces of ½" PVC piping – cut a 20-foot length into three even pieces (80 inches each)

Reemay Cloth (aka Row Cover) or clear poly with excess on all four edges to hold down using smoothedged posts/boards

Pound in Rebar pieces with a hammer Every three feet pound in rebar down one side of the bed.

Angle the pieces slightly inward – toward centre of the bed Put 2/3 of it in the ground and leave 1/3 sticking up On the other side of the bed, four to five feet away from the first side, pound in your rebar.

Slide PVC pieces over rebar and bend them to slide over the other side – this creates your structural support.

3.

Cut your Reemay Cover or Clear Poly to have EXTRA on each side of your structure.

Stretch your cover over the PVC pieces

Anchor (hold down) your cover using heavy, smooth-edged posts, lumber or pipes.

THE SWIMMERS: A TRUE STORY OF COURAGE AND RESILIENCE

Being the middle child of five girls, I've always had a soft spot for films that authentically capture the complexities of sibling relationships. This month's cinematic recommendation, The Swimmers, immediately drew me in with its opening scene – a heartfelt portrayal of two sisters playfully submerging each other in a bustling pool. Little did I know that that seemingly innocent moment would pave the way for a poignant and harrowing journey as the sisters embark on a desperate quest to save themselves and their family from the ravages of war-torn Syria.

The Swimmers is a 2022 biographical sports drama that tackles the true story of professional swimming sisters and Syrian refugees, Yusra and Sarah Mardini, whose incredible courage and resilience will leave you deeply moved. Directed by Sally El Hosaini, and co-written with Jack Thorne, The Swimmers stars real-life sisters Nathalie Issa and Manal Issa. Following its world premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, The Swimmers is now available for streaming on Netflix.

The film chronicles the extraordinary journey of two Syrian teenagers, Yusra and Sarah Mardini, whose lives are turned upside down by the relentless conflict in their homeland. Despite the odds, they hold onto their dream of representing Syria in swimming at the Olympics. After fleeing Syria, they find themselves on a refugee-filled dinghy in the Aegean Sea, where they bravely save the other refugees' lives by pulling the boat through rough waters, nearly drowning.

Their path leads them to a refugee camp in Berlin, but Yusra's determination never wavers. Ultimately, she fulfills her Olympic dream as a member of the Refugee Olympic Team at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

The film is an exploration of not just the injustices of war but also the bureaucratic challenges that refugees face. It highlights the indomitable human spirit in the face of adversity, with a charming undercurrent of sisterly rivalry that never cuts too deep. Sally El Hosaini's direction is emotionally charged, perfectly complementing the powerful narrative.

The performances, especially by Nathalie Issa and Manal Issa, are heartfelt and authentic, immersing the audience in the sisters' journey.

If you're looking for a film that will move and inspire you, The Swimmers is a must-watch. Although the film does have a few moments of maudlin music and on-the-nose storytelling, the flaws are few, and forgivable. Dive into this extraordinary story of courage – you won't be disappointed.

Poised to Change the World I'd tell you to imagine, but if you are fortunate you will not be able to – I certainly can't.

So instead, pretend you are watching a movie … you see an eightyear-old Syrian girl fleeing with her family from the only home they have ever known. They're some of the lucky few to get across the border, but they must be careful they don't get into the wrong car or they will, quite literally, be murdered and their body organs sold. They are fortunate: they are "just" robbed of their money. In the next scene, you see the girl wake up at 4 a.m. and work from 5 a.m. until 8 p.m. – still less than 10 years old. Next scene: the girl and her four siblings and parents are refugees in Turkey; they are homeless, living in a park. They don't have the luxury of trusting anyone; they expect that people will be cruel and that no one does anything kind without expecting something in return.

Obviously, these snippets are just the tip of the story-iceberg, but when I sat down for a chat with 18-year-old Reem Al Ibrahim, she was so full of smiles and gratitude and plans for the future, you would never imagine that this was her life not long ago. She has seen more strife in less than a decade than most of us will ever know and still, she is poised to change the world for the better.

What do you remember about your life in Syria?

I barely remember anything. All I remember is playing with my friends and for the last few months, I was not even able to go out on the street.

Can you share some of your experiences of being refugees in Turkey – having escaped from one country but not yet in your new home country?

Being refugees in Turkey was so terrible because you have absolutely no rights at all. We were always so afraid because from any small problem you would be deported back to Syria or go to prison because you left the country without the police knowing.

How do you feel about what your parents risked to bring your family here?

The conflict in Syria has resulted in the loss of our home and belongings. My parents have had to uproot our family, leaving behind the familiarity of our home and the stability of our lives to seek refuge in Turkey. It was a really big step and a huge change for the whole family but I really do appreciate them for this decision. I think it's the best decision they have ever made!

Your family was sponsored by a local church community and I hope we in Sidney have made your family feel welcome. What has been helpful for your family during this huge time of transition?

The most helpful thing for us was having nice people who actually cared for us without expecting anything from us.

You arrived in Canada at age 13 and began eighth grade without speaking or understanding English, but you are now the main translator for your family. What was this like? How has this impacted you?

It was so hard in the beginning for all of us to learn English.

I had some nights where I was crying because I didn't speak the language and couldn't communicate with the people. My siblings and I did pick up the language quite fast, but it was much harder for my parents. (Author note:…Reem's parents are continually taking English classes and working hard to improve their second language.)

What do you do to handle the stress that comes with school, work, family obligations, being a newcomer etc. ? What do you love to do just for fun?

The best way to handle stress, for me, is to be closer to my family.

Spending more time with them relieves my stress. I usually like to play games, bake, watch movies, activities and even just sit as a family.

That's my favourite thing to do.

Having just completed grade 12, you are now heading off to Camosun College to prepare for Nursing School. Congratulations!

Why have your chosen this path?

I have chosen this path because most of the people who helped us were doctors or nurses. I also love to help people and take care of them, and I think the best way for me to help people is to be a doctor, or at least that's what I believe.

Tell us about the process of becoming a Canadian citizen and how it felt?

It feels so good to be Canadian. I can't tell you how proud I am to be Canadian.

What do you want us, as a community, to know about refugees?

How can we help you and others who will follow in your footsteps?

Honestly, I think you guys are amazing; everyone is so welcoming and nice and lovely. Helping me and others who will follow in my footsteps is crucial for our success and personal development. Here are several ways you can help: • offer mentorship and guidance; • share your knowledge and experiences to help them navigate challenges; • share resources, recommend books and suggest educational programs that can enrich their knowledge and skills; • be a source of emotional support and offer a listening ear; • provide encouragement to help them manage stress and anxiety associated with academic and personal challenges; • share insights into different career paths and industries, help them explore their interests and align their education with their career goals.

Retirement Post-Covid: An Impossible Dream?

It used to be that we equated the approach of our senior years with retirement; the two used to go hand in hand. It seems that these days, that simply isn't the case. With the rising cost of living in an already strained province, coupled with today's rather unpredictable economic environment, it seems almost impossible to get ahead, and totally overwhelming to even think of retirement.

As a senior tweenie approaching my 60s, I have been flirting with the idea of retirement lately, but, like many others in my age group, am concerned about pulling the plug on regular paychecks and corporate benefit packages. I know that in my own circle of family and friends, many newly-minted retirees have ended up going back to work in some capacity, after either blowing through their finances at a rate they didn't account for, or inaccurately estimating how much money and assets they would need to live comfortably for the next 25 to 30 years.

But how do you build a viable retirement plan with so many unknown and/or changing variables, such as quality of health, life span and economic factors like rate of inflation, etc.? What if there isn't a "magic number" for retirement?

While the magic number may be elusive, there are certainly formulas for retirement which a qualified financial planning advisor can verify. In my own research, I discovered that in your retirement years you'll need approximately 70% of your pre-retirement household income each year for roughly the next 25 years. Multiply that figure by 25, and that would be your retirement savings goal.

Your financial advisor will most likely want to factor in our rate of inflation in Canada which, currently in 2023, is about three percent, hopefully dropping down to the target of two percent by 2025.

Although the timing of retirement is typically driven by mainly financial considerations, there are other reasons why seniors may choose to work longer, such as social interaction with others, the need to feel useful and productive, a sense of belonging and accomplishment, and providing structure to daily life.

Over the past few decades, Canada has seen a significant increase in the number of senior citizens wanting to remain working or rejoin the workforce. Statistics Canada in 2023 reported that more than half of seniors planning to retire would continue to work if they found suitable part-time work without affecting their pension. Other factors included finding work that paid more, was less stressful, and/or less physically demanding, and if their health allowed them to work longer.

As far as cost of living for potential retirees, this country's rate of inflation and exorbitant rent increases have contributed to Canada being one of the most expensive countries (ranked 17th) in the

world to live in, with our beautiful B.C. a highly-desired but pricey destination for many retirees. While the cities of Vancouver and Victoria may be priced out of range for many seniors, there are certainly more affordable locales in B.C. to consider, where your hard-earned retirement dollars will go farther. According to www.Curiocity.com, more affordable cities in this province include Kamloops, Abbotsford, Nanaimo, Prince George, Vernon, Courtenay, Terrace and others.

Another option to consider if you are a single senior looking to save retirement dollars is to share accommodations with other like-minded single seniors. I personally am a big fan of the "Golden Girls" concept that is starting to really take off as rental prices escalate. To be quite honest, the prospect of sharing wine and eating popcorn for dinner while watching an endless stream of rom-coms is just too blissful to ignore!

Sweet Dreams, Safe Sleep Program Helps Coast Salish Youth In 2011, one of the staff at NIL TU,O (who is now retired) discussed how difficult it was to get free beds for families she was working with. She said the year previous, she could get a free bed from a major bed supplier in as little time as a month.

However, the wait time had greatly increased and was now over a year. I asked why she was concerned about getting free beds; couldn't people just buy their own? She answered no: these are families living below the poverty line, they don't have credit cards or a vehicle, and have minimum-wage jobs. I asked what does that have to do with her work. "Well, if a child or youth doesn't have a clean, safe bed to sleep in," she replied, "it impacts their health, ability to concentrate at school, growth, and it puts them at risk of being removed from their family because it can be considered neglect. Neglect is a reason to remove a child from their home. What we discovered is, it is not neglect but poverty."

It was decided then that NIȽ TU,O would create a program to help address this risk. The "Sweet Dreams, Safe Sleep" Bed Program now provides both physical beds and an educational opportunity for families to learn about the importance of sleep and having a safe place to sleep.

The educational information included in the program covers three elements: bedding care, children and youth, and safe sleep practices.

Bedding Care Bedding care includes information on how mattress covers, sheets and pillowcases improve the hygiene and lifespan of mattresses.

Bedding care also includes guidelines on when to wash and change sheets, duvet covers, pillows and more.

Children and Youth The children and youth portion of the program includes helpful information on bedtimes, routines, and how to get children to go to and stay in bed, no matter what age they are.

Safe Sleep Practices The safe sleep practices component of the program offers a great education on the wonderful benefits of sleep; from heightened immunity to better concentration, moods and even fewer injuries.

NIȽ TU,O's "Sweet Dreams, Safe Sleep" Bed Program provides children and teens under the age of 19 with a safe, clean bed to call their own. This program promotes health and wellness through safe sleep and healthy bed practices.

Through this initiative, NIȽ TU,O physically provides new bed frames, mattresses, sheets, comforters and pillows to children and youth in the community who need them. In addition to a bed and bedding, each family receives a 15-minute presentation by a Family Support Worker. To date, over 140 new beds have been provided to children and youth in the seven Nations we serve. To be eligible for this program, a family must currently receive services through a NIL TU,O Family Support Worker.

Donate, Divert, Create Many of us are guilty of at least one of the following – an abandoned art project, a stalled work in progress or a creative hobby that never really grabbed hold (either our own or that of our kids). Ideas are gathered, pages are bookmarked, supplies are bought and then life happens and those supplies simply take up space. After accepting that you will never complete that project or use those materials, what do you do with those items just gathering dust?

Divert it from your home and divert it from the landfill would be the suggestion of SUPPLY Victoria Creative Reuse Centre. This community arts organization is a registered society, redistributing used art, office and school supplies, out of our closets, away from the landfill and into the hands, homes, studios and classrooms of those who can use them.

On a recent visit to SUPPLY Victoria, I picked up new paint brushes for programs at my workplace – one sustainability nonprofit supporting another. I didn't visit with any particular need in mind; I like the treasure hunt aspect of the space. There is 2,000 square feet to explore – bins and shelves stocked with low-cost goods. Sales support programs, diversion efforts and sustainability initiatives. In 2022, they were the recipient of the EcoStar Award for Greenest Retailer and the founder and Executive Director, Ashley Howe, was a finalist for Ecopreneur of the Year.

My next step will be to rummage through my personal stash of crafty supplies and decide what can be moved along. Due to space

limitations, Supply Victoria has clear donating guidelines, along with a needs/wants list, posted on their website. There are upwards of 100 different types of items they are currently seeking. Acrylic paints, buttons, crochet needles and pipe cleaners are only a few of the supplies on that list.

SUPPLY Victoria isn't solely about the in and out of goods.

They also offer classes and special events using reclaimed materials. My first encounter with SUPPLY Victoria was during the pandemic; they were among the hosts of free outdoor community workshops in a nearby park. These Creative Reuse Workshops are offered at their Centre and offsite through partnerships. Scrappy Last Saturdays is for families with children seven to 12; guest artists engage participants in creating upcycled crafts.

As an organization that supports all things sustainability, inclusion and community, they also have a material grant program.

Fabulous Focaccia October means a bit of a shift in cooking; as the weather starts to change we look to heartier stews and soups to warm us up as it cools down. To go with these types of meals, I highly recommend homemade focaccia. It not only looks glorious: it also tastes amazing.

No matter who is enjoying this bread, whether it's part of a dinner party with friends or for a family night in, I promise that it will disappear very quickly as the toppings add fabulous flavours and make it so appealing to the eye as well as to the palate.

What I've learned about making focaccia (and with cooking in general) is that it's essential to use good olive oil. With this bread, olive oil does two things: it lends a wonderful flavour that is deep, rich and often sort of fruity, and it helps to create a tender crumb and crisp crust. Focaccia is a great recipe for beginner bread makers, as it doesn't require any special equipment as long as you're up for a little bit of a workout as you have to knead the dough thoroughly if you don't use a bread hook and mixer.

The dough is stretched out to fit a standard 9x13 pan, so you don't have to worry about shaping it. What you do have to commit to, however, is the time it takes to prove the dough. Other than that, it's an easy and impressive way to delve into the wonderful world of bread making. It's also so versatile because you can add or omit any toppings that strike your fancy. Not interested in onion? No worries: just throw on more tomatoes or olives. Classic focaccia recipes often just call for oil, salt and rosemary, but feel free to jazz it up with what most appeals to you.

As you get more confident with making focaccia, play around with the toppings. Add thinly-sliced apples along with some blue cheese.

Caramelized onions and chunks of cooked bacon are fantastic, as are chopped grapes with goat cheese. Or try grated mozzarella along with sundried tomatoes and bits of Genoa salami. Yes, indeed.

But whatever you add in terms of toppings, you'll create a golden, crusty, salty bread with a light, chewy texture. With its wonderful sponginess, it will squish in the very best way possible and, I'm sure, become one of your go-to recipes.

Chock-a-Block Focaccia Dough 4 cups flour ¾ tsp salt 3 ¾ tsp instant yeast

2 tbsp olive oil (plus lots more for pan, bowls) 1 ½ cups of water

Toppings (omit the ones you don’t like, or substitute others) ⅓ cup pitted Kalamata olives, cut in half or thirds

1 tsp dried oregano

¼ of a red onion, cut into very slim wedges

⅔ cup (approximately) olive oil

6-8 cherry or grape tomatoes, cut in small chunks

1 tsp dried rosemary

flaky sea salt

Put all of the dough ingredients into a large bowl; stir together to combine. I use a mixer with a dough hook to knead for 2-3 minutes on slow and 6-7 minutes on medium speed. If you don't have a mixer with a dough hook, stir and mix well for a few minutes, then turn dough out onto lightly-oiled surface and knead for 10 minutes, or until it's soft and elastic.

Put dough in bowl and cover with plastic wrap; let rise for about two hours at room temperature. The dough should at least double in size.

Generously oil base of a 9x13 inch baking pan. Tip dough into well-oiled pan; stretch it out to fit pan. Drizzle with lots of olive oil; make indentations in dough with your fingers. Go deep here with the indentations, as the bread is still going to rise again.

Put bread pan into a roomy freezer bag or cover lightly with plastic wrap; proof again for 1½ hours at room temperature.

Heat oven to 450°. Remove pan from bag/plastic wrap. Now add the toppings. Press the cut olives, sliced onion and chopped tomatoes into the indentations made in the dough. Drizzle dough with more olive oil, sprinkle with dried rosemary and oregano, then with a good amount of sea salt.

Bake focaccia for 20-24 minutes or until golden brown. Once you've taken the focaccia from the oven, drizzle on a bit more olive oil. Cool slightly on rack, remove from pan and cool. Cut into chunks and serve!

Art Never Looked So Gourd For most of us, a big spoon and a kitchen knife are all we've ever used to unleash our artistic side when we create our annual Halloween Jack-o'-lanterns. But one local artist's tools of choice in gourd art include a jigsaw, drill and wood burner!

The pumpkin and gourd may come from the same family of fruits, but while the pumpkin can be readily carved with an ordinary kitchen knife, the type of gourds Raven Wyntre-Clarkson uses to create art require more sophisticated tools and techniques to shape their tough woody surface. "There is a lot of work and preparation involved in gourd art," shares Raven. "To begin with, I cut it using a crafting jigsaw which you can hold in your hand. The gourd is a good one or two inches in thickness, and it can be tough to cut through this."

Since stumbling upon this unusual art medium 20 years ago, Raven has been exploring and enjoying this creative activity.

"I met this woman who had gone to a gourd workshop in Arizona and wanted to teach classes in it. She was looking for people to take her class and give her feedback. That's how I got involved," relates Raven.

Initial work with the gourd brought new discoveries about the variety of artistic options possible. "I took a course and ordered some small gourds," says Raven. "I found out that what you can do with wood, you can do with gourds. You can carve, wood burn and paint them. It's endless."

The gourds are sourced from Welburn Gourd Farm, in Fallbrook California, the largest organic grower in the world and also the foremost source for gourd tools and supplies. Gourds come in a wide variety of

shapes, sizes, colours and markings; each has its own unique appearance. As its hard exterior shell dries out, the moisture inside the gourd slowly escapes through the shell and the stem. Eventually, the insides become completely dry and the outer shell in turn hardens. Nature itself can lend a hand in contributing to the artistic appearance of a gourd with the introduction of something as common as the mould that appears on the outside. "The mould on the gourd comes from the liquid that seeps out on the skin as it dehydrates on the vine," comments Raven.

"The mould will be a unique pattern on the gourd."

The gourds are unopened when they arrive, so the first steps involve cleaning and preparing them. Raven describes some of this process: "Cleaning gourds is a lot of work; it is very time consuming. I use a drill that has a round ball shape to help me get a smooth surface inside the gourd. I wear a mask because of the fine particles of dust that all this generates."

The next step is deciding what direction to go with the project in terms of techniques

and the final look of the piece. "I think a lot about what I can do with each gourd," shares Raven. "Do I want to keep the lid on or off? What kind of patterns do I want? Do I want to carve, wood burn, or just paint the gourd?"

Sometimes it's a combination of all these techniques. Raven's Christmas gourd angels are a great example. "The angels are all wood burned," explains Raven. "I bore holes and attach wire for their wings, use tiny brushes to paint them, apply a heat tool to set the paint, and finally spray them at the end."

The work is challenging, requiring attention to precision and safety. "I use the Razertip wood burning tool," says Raven. "It gets very hot, so you need to be very careful."

Over the years, Raven has created a variety of items including bowls, earrings, figurines, lamps and luminaries which are bowls in which you put LED lights. Raven participated in the Coast Collective exhibits as

part of the Arts and Culture Colwood Society, and over the last few years, the annual First Chance Christmas Show and Last Chance Christmas Show at Mary Winspear Centre. The positive feedback from others has been both motivating and gratifying. "I like to create something that brings people joy," shares Raven. "One woman was so moved and said that the gourds reminded her of her homeland."

It takes time and tenacity, but the result is rewarding both artistically and personally. "Each gourd piece represents me, my work, and also the gourd itself," remarks Raven. "It is nature's creation for which I have great respect."

While we might enjoy Jack-o'-lanterns for a few days each Halloween before they make their way into our compost bins, the works of gourd art that Raven creates offer the joy of nature's creation for many years to come.

Where Heritage Meets Hockey: ALEKO SDRAKAS How many people can say that they still love something as passionately as they did when they were four years old?

For Aleko Sdrakas, the answer is easy. At that age his parents put him in hockey, and he has played ever since – as a kid with the Peninsula Eagles, for the Peninsula Panthers and Kerry Park, and most recently as a right-wing with the Greek National team.

Aleko remembers playing in the Little Canucks team with his brother, who is one year older than him, and says that he just fell in love with the sport. His progress has been notable – playing minor-league hockey and travelling around the Island, to playing with the South Island Royals, and finally internationally this past August in Miami.

But to Aleko, hockey is just as much about the players as it is about the sport. He says that his closest friends growing up were the group of guys he played with – "the rink

was our happy place."

When he played with the Panthers, teammate Grant Gilbertson passed away, and Aleko says he felt honoured that their team won the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL) that year in Grant's memory.

His coaches have also made a big difference throughout the years, including connecting him with the Greek National team earlier this summer. Aleko says "I would like to thank Brad Tippet, Brian Passmore, Brandon Cox, Henry Acres, Brad Cook and Wayne Ross."

Ten years ago, the Greek team was shut down because they no longer had a regulation sized skating rink. The team is starting up again for the first time since 2013 and Aleko says that it's "pretty cool to be in the rise of it all." The team's goal is to build the required rink in Greece and play with the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). This means that everyone on the team, including players from across North America and even Sweden, will have to get Greek passports. Aleko's grandparents are from Greece but his father was born in Canada, so in order for Aleko to play on the team, his father will first need to get his citizenship. Aleko says that

his family is so proud that he will be representing their Greek heritage in the sport that he loves best.

"I never thought I'd be able to represent our country on an international scale," Aleko says. He sees a marked difference between playing for a country versus a club. When he joined the team, he says that it felt like "we knew each other before we met," and that the team is like a family. Aleko sees the same passion in the other players that he has always felt in himself while growing up.

The last time Aleko was in Greece was when he was nine years old. He had planned to go in 2020 after he graduated high school, but the pandemic cancelled that. He says that he's lived in Canada his whole life and can't wait to learn more about his heritage in the country itself. His family owns and runs Maria's Souvlaki in Sidney, so he is always surrounded by his culture, but he's looking forward to being able to spend time with his family in Greece.

Aleko sees the benefit that having a rink will give to the community – more opportunities for the country to host events, not only as a hockey rink but for other sports like figure skating, as well as having a space for those who have never skated before.

While the team gains support and sponsorship, and Aleko goes through the process of becoming a citizen, he has started studying at Camosun and playing with the UVic hockey team. His hopes are that after he plays with the Greek National team, he might eventually play pro in Europe. But for now, he dreams of playing in the new rink and in the World Championships for his country. Aleko says that "mixing Greek heritage with hockey is the ultimate combination."

PEMO ESS - A Lifeline When We Need it Most submitted by Peninsula Emergency Measures Organization

What would

you do if your house had a fire, a gas leak, or was flooded? What if there was a forest fire, a major earthquake, a chemical leak or a storm and you had to evacuate your home? What if you had nowhere to go when this happened?

During this year's forest fire season and during other emergencies, you heard about first responders. The B.C. wildfire firefighters, local firefighters, police and ambulance crews were there first to help people. In the following hours, when people were ordered to leave their homes, they may have needed simple things like a place to sleep, food and clothes. Then, another layer of response is activated: Emergency Support Services (ESS).

Whether one person has to leave their home due to a fire or thousands have to leave because of a forest fire or flood, ESS volunteers help people during those first few days.

In B.C., thousands of ESS volunteers train and prepare so that when an emergency or disaster affects their community, they are ready. They establish relationships with local businesses to provide basic needs to people. They determine where Reception Centres could be set up in the event of a large emergency where many people need support.

What does that mean to people on the Peninsula? Did you know that there is an active ESS volunteer team on the Peninsula?

ESS is part of the Peninsula Emergency Measures Organization (PEMO) which serves Peninsula residents. Our three municipalities – Sidney, Central Saanich and North Saanich – work directly with ESS to determine when someone needs support

and when a Reception Centre needs to be established. Sidney Fire oversees the ESS team for all.

ESS Volunteers complete a series of provincially-funded courses through the Justice Institute of BC, participate in regular training and practices, and meet monthly. This province-wide training means that ESS Volunteers can and have been deployed to other places to help with large-scale incidents. On the Peninsula, we have responded to house fires, flooded buildings and gas leaks.

In the past two years, these responses included 68 call outs while helping 81 people and numerous dogs and cats.

When ESS is activated, essential to this support are the local business communities. There are many grocers, restaurants, hotels, motels and clothing stores on the Peninsula that have agreed to be part of this support system. They know what ESS is and are reimbursed for costs by the province.

Providing these essential supports enables people to re-establish themselves as quickly as possible after an emergency or disaster.

tasted hops. Beer is, essentially, water, fermented grain (often but not always barley), and, more often than not, hops: the flowers or "cones" of a plant called humulus lupulus. Lupulus comes from the Latin for "wolf," because this vining plant pounces on its supports like a wolf on sheep, and so it's sometimes referred to as "wolf vine." It's commonly called hops, though, from the Anglo-Saxon hoppan – "to climb."

If you toured the Saanich Peninsula 150 years ago, you would have discovered fields of barley and dozens of hop yards, the hightrellised plantations where hops "bines" (twisting vines) grow to dizzyingly heights of 20 feet or more. On a warm summer day in season, hop vines can scramble upward a foot or more a day, and fun botanical fact: they always twist in a clockwise direction.

Tradition has it that the first hops were brought to the Saanich Peninsula in 1864 from San Francisco by a settler named William Towner, who established a large hop yard on Downey Road in North Saanich. Throughout the 1880s and 1890s, as the number of yards expanded, North Saanich was a renowned site of hop production.

counter-balance the sweetness of the grains. Historically, that bitterness wasn't the goal: hops became ubiquitous in early, traditional beer-making because hops are also natural anti-microbial agents, helping to preserve beer from being spoiled by rogue bacteria.

Today, British Columbia hop yards are returning to the scene, and craft brewers are again increasingly able to source provincially-grown hops, though at the moment those hop yards are primarily clustered in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley. Am I crazy to hope hops will return to the Peninsula?

In some last, few corners, there are the remains of those historic hopyards.

In fields and scrambling up trees in North Saanich, there are the survivors of William Towner's hopyards and the many hopyards that followed.

If you fancy trying a local beer made with some old hop plantings, stop by Howl Brewing on Mills Road in North Saanich (www.howlbrewing.ca). Each autumn, community-sourced hops from local old bines are brought in by neighbours in buckets and brewed to keep a Peninsula beer-making tradition alive until the hopyards return to the Island.

Cycling Without Age

By the turn of the 20th century, British Columbia was the largest producer of hops anywhere in the Commonwealth, and Vancouver Island was among the areas in the province exporting hops internationally. By the 1950s, it was over: local production was no longer profitable. There was the disastrous arrival of a particularly destructive species of hop weevil and increased competition on the mainland. The Peninsula hopyards, with their distinctive trellising and the hop kilns or "oast houses" used to dry the crop, fell into disrepair and have since vanished.

I had the idea three years ago to plant a small hopyard on the farm, and this autumn we were finally rewarded with our first harvest. I wanted to see if hops would flourish, and they did! They grew so high that we had another logistical challenge, new to us but long familiar to hop farmers: how to harvest something 20 feet or more in the sky. Traditionally, English hop growers harvested on stilts. I toyed with the idea of harvesting my own crop this way, but imagined myself, trussed up in traction, having a stunned conversation with WorkSafe … and instead simply dropped the whole deliciously-scented, feather-light crop on my head.

Canadians have always had a strong affinity for home ownership. A decade ago, 69% of Canadian adults owned a home; by 2023, this has fallen to 66%, largely due to increasing levels of unaffordability. This drop in ownership has contributed, significantly, to minimal vacancy rates and skyrocketing rents nationwide.

Only 50% of Canadian homeowners own their home outright. Those with mortgages owe an average of $363,000 ($487,000 in B.C.).

Recent surveys have shown that about 34% of current mortgage holders regret the size of their mortgage, and are fearful to varying degrees.

While officially, the Canada-wide mortgage delinquency rate is still at a miniscule 0.14%, about 4% of mortgage holders are behind on at least one payment.

When mortgage holders struggle, Banks do not want them to become officially delinquent, with foreclosures, and major value write-offs on Balance Sheets, the likely result. Instead, Banks try to work out an acceptable solution – most often by extending amortization periods to moderate payment stress, particularly when mortgages renew at much higher interest rates.

While welcomed, and frequently necessary for homeowners, these amortization-period extensions have added greatly to the longer-term indebtedness of Canadian homeowners. Until a few years ago, few Canadians had mortgage amortizations beyond 25 years; currently, 43% have amortizations that stretch beyond 25 years – some even beyond 30 years.

These trends do not bode well for families hoping to retire debt-free by age 65. A recent survey showed that about half of Canadian homeowners plan to carry a mortgage balance into retirement.

Clearly, these real estate stresses on homeowners are unsustainable in the long term; something will need to change. Discretionary retail spending by homeowners is certain to become severely restricted. GDP growth will slow or reverse, and pressure will emerge on the Bank of Canada to begin lowering interest rates – probably in the first half of 2024.

With that likelihood, today’s mortgage holder with a fixed-rate mortgage coming up for renewal would be wise to limit the renewal term to two years, in the expectation that a future renewal will be at lower rates.

The message to moderate housing appetites may be too late for current, highly-indebted homeowners. However, aspiring first-time buyers should try to purchase at a price well below their current affordability – by reducing size and price expectations. The Federal Stress Test, which calculates a borrower’s ability to afford a proposed mortgage at 2% above then-current rates, also helps to moderate the size of an approved mortgage.

The overriding conclusion to be drawn from the current challenging environment for many mortgage holders is that becoming mortgagefree as soon as possible should take far greater priority in the spending habits of households, than has been the case in the past.

Nothing is more liberating than owning a home with no mortgage. The elimination of a monthly mortgage payment will have a major positive impact on the subsequent lifestyle of the homeowner.

This is part of a rotating series of articles about some of the Saanich Peninsula's unique shops and services.

As I write this, we will soon be officially into fall. We have enjoyed a long and sunny spring/ summer season and I'm hopeful that we will soon get some much-needed rain.

I have recovered and refurbished many outdoor cushions this season, and I thank my amazing clients for keeping their cushions out of the landfill. I know my clients will enjoy their cushions for many, many years. I use only quality outdoor fabric that is sun, water and mold/mildew resistant. I leave my Sunbrella cushions out from May to late fall; I hose them down to keep them clean and I feel confident leaving them out in the rain. Some, that are under cover, I leave out year round! These cushions are zippered to allow removal of the inserts; the covers can then be washed and bleach can be used.

I have added sample books this year that have some florals and many textured samples, and I have stripes in many colours.

Soon, our days will be shorter and inclement weather will force us inside. We all want a home that supports our lifestyle. We moved our young family here from Alberta 30 years ago and our white-upholstered sofa took a beating over our first winter. Three kids and wet dogs took their toll! I have slipcovered that sofa twice in our time here. I recommend 100% cotton for slipcovers, but it has been difficult to source over the last few years. I have 10 oz cotton twill in white, cream and grey; I also have a variety of solid colours. I have been unable to source stripes or patterns. I have some textured, endurable samples in polyester and blends. My slipcovers are generously zippered for easy removal of cushion covers and the body of the furniture piece for washing. I can make generous arm covers, if needed. Please know I will require your furniture piece to be in my shop for patterning.

Leather furniture is not a candidate for slipcovers. For leather pieces, I can recover cushions and offer large arm covers. The body/ back of a leather piece cannot be covered as there is nowhere to attach the covers.

I can also make elasticized "fitted-sheet" style covers for cushions.

These are not only easy to remove for washing, but can be removed when entertaining to offer your guests clean and pet hair free seating.

I can also provide custom-sized under pads that will keep your cushions dry and odour free. These sit under the elasticized covers.

Winter is a great time to refurbish marine cushions. I offer a reduced price this time of year, when I'm not as busy. I am not an upholsterer – I cover cushions that are loose and can be removed and I can also arrange to replace foam inserts.

A Cookie Cutter Home –

We've Made it Ours!

Amy says their new 1,986-square-foot home off John Road in North Saanich was tastefully finished, but "we wanted to add some colour, have some fun and make it ours." Completed in 2021 as a collection of 21 single-family homes beside North Saanich Middle School, the three-bedroom home has an open-concept design with nine-foot ceilings on the main floor.

Quality features include a quartz-topped island in the kitchen, glass doors leading out to a covered patio and a fenced backyard. It is a high-efficiency home with a heat pump, on-demand hot water, a heated garage, and an EV car hook-up. The main bedroom has walk-in closets and an ensuite with a heated floor.

Amy and her husband Moe bought the house in time to have the builder upgrade the electric fireplace to gas.

Because they have a much-loved bloodhound called Maybellene, they requested laminate flooring on the upper level instead of carpet.

This home differed significantly from the Toronto semi-detached home they had lived in for over 10 years in the Leslieville neighbourhood, just east of the Don River. They had renovated their kitchen and particularly liked the floating barn-board shelves highlighted from underneath by LED lights. Two other favourite features included a living green wall and a long wall of custom shelving housing their huge collection of treasured books. Amy said she loved that home's character, and once they had purchased their new home, she asked her husband Moe: "How are we going to change it into something we love?"

Amy's mission focused on transforming their home into an aesthetically-pleasing space for a reasonable budget. The changes included adding white California shutters and soft fabric valances. Light fixtures were upgraded, more dimmer switches were added, and the kitchen backsplash, which was dark brown and shiny, was replaced with much lighter Cuban-style concrete tiles. Faux barn wood in a darker tone was added to the ceiling beam because they wanted some texture and to reduce the room's whiteness. Amy applied peeland-stick wallpaper to liven up walls and ceilings. Higher-quality bathroom and ceiling fans were installed, and even the plastic components in the bathroom sinks were replaced – they had made the sinks look cheap. These were small changes in some ways, but good ones in moving the house's interior to align with the couple’s tastes.

Modern artwork is a predominant feature in their home. Moe, a professional photographer, and Amy feel that you should go as big as possible with photos and other artwork; the large photographs make a statement. Photos by Maureen O'Connor from Toronto show animals – some from local sanctuaries – photographed on-site in crumbling houses or other building locations. According to her website, she wants her photos to "ask questions about how nature and the built environment intersect. She sees these spaces as transformative, evoking memory and showing the beauty and fragility of the animals and the architecture."

Other huge prints include animal photographs by Peter Samuels of San Francisco and Fantastical Feasts by Claire Rosen, including elephants in one and rhinos in another, feasting at a table. A photo of a huge bright-eyed sheep at Amy and Moe's dining table adds to the mood. In the corner is a globe-shaped terrarium, and they have added a partial artificial green wall and candle sconces. The dining table chandelier is airy and evocative of spring blossoms.

Pink is a warming theme: an aquarium with lights sits on the kitchen counter beside a pink-topped light globe, a pink dish towel hangs from the oven door, and some photos have a pink strip in their inner frame. The main bedroom has a vaulted ceiling, pink lamps, a snake photo with a pink background, and a pink-lit "Sweet Dreams" above the cerise headboard. A print of "Jackie" with oversized eyes and sunglasses wearing her pink suit adds another pop of colour on the wall between the builtin closet and the ensuite. (Print by artist Michelle Vella).

Moe's music room is inspiring, with stacked books, nostalgic posters and photos of famous musicians, and a handsome collection of guitars. A grey-and-white star carpet lines the stairs leading down to the main floor. To add contrast to the white railings, Amy painted the handrail a warm brown. In a significant change, the two-storey main wall was transformed from an "oh, so boring beigeness" to a dramatic slat wall that adds texture and reflects the light differently due to the vertical channels.

Outside, Amy has added a comical owl over the front porch, hanging baskets, and a colourful wreath on the front door.

In the backyard, two mint green Adirondack chairs face the flower garden and new dogwood tree. Amy says she loves being outside, and her number-one thing has always been hiking to beautiful places with her dogs. She takes Maybellene for a 10- to 12-kilometre walk each morning, and as most dog owners know, this is a great way to meet new people.

Amy has never applied for a driving licence as she always biked or walked in Toronto. She is glad to leave behind the -20° to -30° mornings and the blizzards she rode through to work; Amy taught children with special needs for 30 years. These mornings, she is up at 4 a.m. to ride her indoor Peloton bike three days a week. Amy has made her exercise room special by adding a lit Buddha fountain and glowing rock lights on the floor. On her "rest" days, Amy bikes into Victoria and back. At 55, she is truly a woman with great energy!

Positive reviews from friends living on Vancouver Island, workplace changes and Covid all had a bearing on their move to Sidney. But before they made any plans to move from Toronto, Amy, in a chat with Moe, said: "One day, we're going to live by the ocean where we can see whales, and we're going to move our favourite plants to our new garden. A couple of months later, this plan just unfolded and wow, here we are, living by the ocean." Amy and Moe have created a colourful, fun, and charming home they love.

In the early 1980s, Suzanne Simard was often the lone female in her workplace. She chose a career in forestry because of the legacy of her family; for generations they had made their living from cutting down trees. She grew up surrounded by trees, had a love for forests and desire to understand the way they grow and regenerate, providing food and fuel and clean air. What she discovered in the forestry industry was different than she expected, and often at cross purposes with what she understood forestry to be about. Simard has made it her life's work not just to understand trees, but to gather unequivocal evidence that could be used to change the modern industrial relationship to trees as a resource.

Finding the Mother Tree – Discovering the Wisdom of the Forest documents Simard's life alongside her scientific research. It details discoveries decades in the making, and a thesis that was readily dismissed when she first presented it: that trees communicate with one another through complex interconnected networks of fungus in the soil. Her research has changed the way that forests are viewed, and this book has become a best seller inspiring activists, writers and filmmakers to spread her ideas.

It was a large group that came to our September meeting to discuss Finding the Mother Tree; everyone agreed that Simard is a tenacious and resilient woman and that her contribution to science is amazing.

We didn't all agree about our enjoyment of her book, however. The science within the book is very detailed – and learning how quickly she was dismissed at the start of her career, it's understandable that she wants to present this work very thoroughly and methodically – but for the lay-person it makes for a challenging and slow read. Interwoven with the detail of hypothesis, experiment and analysis of results is the story of Simard's own life. For some there was too much extraneous detail; for others the personal story was the bit that was interesting.

We felt that we gained an understanding of the way her mind worked and marvelled at her determination to continue in the face of an intimidating and vitriolic response from her colleagues and peers.

Finding the Mother Tree really excelled as an exploration of B.C., its forests, animals and the connection between people and the land. Its central message about the complex relationships that trees have with our ecosystem is essential.

The Peninsula Panthers Organization opened this 2023/24 Regular Season with a whole new look behind the bench as well as a number of wide-eyed rookies. Tyler Stanton was hired late in April and debuts as the new Head Coach and General Manager of the squad. The youngest General Manager in Goaltender Coach Junior Hockey at the age of 27 is a bold move by the Organization but one that Pete and Coreen Zubersky feel entirely comfortable with. Stanton hails out of the Juan de Fuca Minor Hockey Association where last season he guided his U-18 squad to a Provincial berth. His team fell just short in winning a Provincial Championship, ultimately losing in the Gold Medal Game. The young General Manager brings with him Coaches Colin Carter, Connor McClelland and Goaltender Coach Devin Douglas. That group will join incumbents Grayson Vickers and Hans Kossman who finished the year in the Coaching ranks with the Organization.

Evan Crawford was named Captain of the Club just days before they played their Home Opener back on September 8. A packed barn in the friendly confines of the Panorama Recreation Centre witnessed the Cats win over the visiting Westshore Wolves by a 4-2 count. The crowd was the largest in recent memory and certainly was the largest crowd to grace the Panorama for a Panthers opener ever. Joining Crawford in the Leadership Group this time around are Julien Phillips, Reid Fryer and Ethan Lingard. The four will be wearing an ‘A’ for the Club this season.

A significant signing that spearheaded the direction the Club followed this summer in the area of recruiting was the addition of 18-year-old Carson Harris. Harris toiled last season with the Campbell River Storm however returned to Campbell River Minor Hockey Association on January 10. The Panthers capitalized on Harris being a free agent and he came to terms and signed with the Club on June 1 this summer.

Four others from Campbell River followed Harris to the Peninsula including Tanner Ferrill, Ahron Calalay, Gavin Mowat and Jason Sekulich. Three other rookies join the Panthers from Stanton’s U-18 Team including Colton Trotter, Risto Ringma and Ben Swan. Lukas Preweda played ten games with the Panthers last season as a callup from the Peninsula U-18 Team and he too was inked on June 1. Preweda scored his first ever Junior goal in the Home Opener. Zubersky flew out to Alberta and watched Silas Currie play in the Alberta Provincial play downs last February and he was signed to a contract this past summer. Currie joins Ferrill as a pair of 18-yearold rookie stoppers and they will be counted on heavily. Charlie Williams was obtained in a transaction with the Lake Cowichan Kraken. Other veterans who return to the Panthers over and above the Leadership Group are Ryan Grambart who finished 2nd in VIJHL scoring last season, Tristan Rosenblood, Malcolm Fletcher, Luka Jansen van Rensburg, Cameron Sneek, Robson Scott and Brad Bates.

Last Word from the Editor-in-Chief Allison Smith Back in July, we were camping at Cultus Lake near Chilliwack. Two things marred the experience: someone attempted to steal our bike rack, and, in a separate incident, my husband and brother had their bikes stolen (although they were returned later). Sitting around the firepit that night, we said things like "this would have never happened on the Island."

Yes, it was said jokingly, but you have to wonder. I know our beautiful Saanich Peninsula community has crime. But we're also the community where, when I saw an elderly woman struggling to push a stalled e-trike out of the middle of an intersection and pulled over to help, every car that passed me rolled down their window to ask if I needed them to join in the rescue mission. This is the community where, when a local bride had to move her wedding from Kelowna to the Peninsula due to forest fires and find flowers last minute, offers came pouring in.

We are so lucky, and of course, beyond the people who live there, the lifeblood of a community is the businesses that sustain it. In this issue of Seaside Magazine, we celebrate our local small businesses. Without them building the heart of our community, there would be nowhere for us to gather, to connect with one another, to find support for our children's sports teams or school fundraisers. It's an endless loop of shoring each other up.

Never has that been more true than over the past few years. While some businesses closed, others bravely opened their doors. While the threat of the pandemic has passed, these newer businesses, and the long-time fixtures of the Peninsula, still face uncertainty and challenges.

"Ours is a front row seat to the ebb and flow of our community," say Alice Bacon and John Carswell, owners of Brentwood Bay Village Empourium (pg. 17) While Seaside Magazine may not have a physical location, we are a place where the stories of our community are gathered and shared. Sidney All Care Residence: A Small Family Business Success Story.

Casey VanDongen and his daughter Sheila Minten opened Sidney All Care Residence in 2013 with a vision of providing individualized and compassionate care in a loving long-term care home and community.

The VanDongen family have a profound understanding that the care provided to our residents should be what we expect for our own family, having experienced young onset dementia with Marilyn, Sheila’s Mom. Sheila opened Sidney All Care Residence with one resident and, now as our Vice-President, operates a fully occupied home with 87 residents and over 120 employees.

“We take pride in our amazing staff, many who have been with us since opening. Our staff are committed to delivering the highest standards of care to our residents and families,” says Sheila. “This year, we celebrated our 10th anniversary and without our amazing staff, we wouldn’t be where we are today.”
