Local officials say no vacccines for the public yet But they are working together to try to have a plan to distribute them once they arrive By Darren Dunn
(Seguin) -- There are no vaccinations now available for the general public, but at some point -- later this year -that will change. Local officials all week have been stressing that the public needs to remain patient and that the only COVID-19 vaccine doses availabe locally have been going to medical workers and first responders, who the state identifies at Tier 1A recipients. There’s been a limited supply and there’s just not enough to begin to provide vaccinations for those in Tier 1B, which includes those over the age of 65 or those over the age of 16 who have a underlying medical condition. Seguin City Manager Steve Parker again drove this fact home during a COVID-19 pandemic update that he gave Tuesday night to the Seguin City Council. Parker says even though there aren’t doses now avaible for the general public, he says local officials are working together to start trying to come up with a distribution strategy that will work whenever those
doses finally arrived. It could be weeks or months before that happens, but he says they want to be ready to respond. “Over the next couple of weeks, we are working on a plan with the hospital. As
we get in future doses of the COVID vaccine -- we want to come up with a plan of how we administer that with all the other agencies. The main focus at that point will be the 1B type people who are over 65, or who have medical conditions
that we really need to be concerned with. At this point, all vaccines are either being administered to either public safety professionals or they are being administered to medical professionals,” said Parker. See VACCINES, Page 3

Volunteers encouraged to sign, show up for today’s Mega Food Distribution event WWW.SEGUINTODAY.COM
By Darren Dunn
(Seguin) -- Thousands of pounds of food will be distributed for free to people who signed up for this week’s Mega Food Distrubition event. The free event will be held this morning outside the Seguin Coliseum, thanks to a partnership between the city of Seguin, GRMC and the New Braunfels Food Bank. Volunteers are still need to help with the distribution of the food. Seguin City Manager Steve Parker says you can sign up to volunteer online, or you should just show up today and be ready to lend a hand. “Too many of these things we have not had enough people show up. We want people to be able to take breaks, or people have to leave, and that just leaves a lot of work for everybody. So the more volunteers (we have), the better. If you’ve already signed up, great. If you ever go on the website and it says that they are full of volunteers, please show up anyway, because a lot of people don’t show up at certain times. It would really help out. We have a good crew that has gotten a lot of really good experience doing this. This will be our fifth or sixth one (hosted by the city). They do a phoenominal job processing the 700 or 800 families (that will show up, and they will provide) upwards of a 150,000 pounds of food,” said Parker.
You can sign up to volunteer by visiting nbfoodbank.org, or you can just show up at the gazebo next to the coliseum this morning. The Mega Food Distribution event runs
from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. today outside the Coliseum. Those receiving food will receive approximately two weeks worth of food, including milk, meat, fruits, vegetables, and dry goods.
COVID pushes some Texas funeral homes to the brink
(San Antonio) -- The coronavirus death toll continues to rise and that’s taking a toll on funeral homes in some of the state, that have been hardest hit by the spread of the virus. Some funeral directors in those areas have been forced to start a waiting list.
leave,” said Allen. Allen says it’s been a challenge, but they are doing all that they can to take care of families during their time of need.
Gene Allen with the Texas Funeral Directors Association says it’s even hard for some funeral directors to find caskets these days, because of the overall increased number of deaths.
“We had two families in yesterday, and caskets that both families chose were out. We chose a substitute and by the time we called back and gave them the order for the substitutes -- the substitutes were gone,” said Allen.
“Our casket company reps have told us if a family chooses something that’s a model on your display floor, you make sure you call the warehouse and secure it -- if the warehouse has got it -- before you let that family
Allen says some members of the association are reporting that some families are having a funeral and then putting the body in storage for a burial that will happen at a later date, when the casket arrives.

City provides another COVID-19 update
VACCINES continued from Page 1 Just getting enough vaccines to cover the county’s over-65 population is going to be a challenge, but Parker says the cities, the county and the hospital will work together to try to figure all of this out, so that when an adequate number of doses arrive, they can begin putting those shots into the arms of the people that need them most. “There are 23,000 people over the age of 65 in Guadalupe County alone, and (right now) you’re looking at numbers of 100, 200, maybe 500 doses. So to get (doses) distrbuted to all those different people and get all those people over 65 vaccinated -- is going to be a lengthy process. We will try to minimize that as much as possible, but overall our goal is to try to come up with a plan. We don’t have any ability to dictate when the state makes those allocations to us. It’s not as easy as just lining people up and walking down the aisle and giving them a shot and then letting them go home. You have to have staging for the people. You have to have people who are administering (the shots). You have to have people who are, kind of, quality controlling it and making sure that people are eligible for that. You also have to make sure that once they’re given the shot, that you have a place for them to sit for the next 15 to 20 mintues to make sure (that they are okay). You (also) have to keep your social distance. We really need to have a good plan, and that’s what we are doing with our local health providers, GRMC, the city of Schertz and the county to come up with that plan of
WWW.SEGUINTODAY.COM
how we distribute that,” said Parker.
Guadalupe County alone,” said Parker.
Parker says he knows it is not easy being patient when there are national and statewide stories talking about more vaccines coming to Texas. He says it’s going to be difficult to know when they will actually arrive here, but he says they will do all that they can to be prepared and to make sure they are communicating effectively with the public.
The city has put into place more restrictions on restaurants and bars, due to the increased number of COVID-19 patients in the hospital. Parker says it’s just part of the effort to try to slow the spread of the virus.
“I just know that the community is going to hear that there are different people (in other places) getting allocations before us. It doesn’t mean that we are not wanting to serve our community and get those things out there. It just takes a little bit of time and we are going to work on that to make sure that we have a good rollout plan and try to do some type of mass vaccinations as soon as possible,” said Parker. Parker’s update also served as a reminder that people still need to do all that the can to curb the spread of the virus. “In the city of Seguin, we have about 33 cases overall, but the county (recently) got 645 new cases, which they have not been able to go through and sort and allocate those to the various municipalities within Guadalupe County. So those numbers will increase. There’s still a backlog at the state of seven to nine days. In particular, the number of deaths remains at 48. It’s been there for the last two months, while the state’s website shows 107 deaths in
“Last week, the city had to implement (more restrictions) -- based on the state’s mandated guidelines from the governor’s office. Anytime the number of hospital beds available versus the number of hospitalizations hits 15 percent for seven consecutive days, that area is required to implement some new restrictions. That mainly applied to restaurants and bars. Bars are required to close, (and) restaurants are required to go down from 75 percent to 50 percent capcity. Elective surgeries for hospitals are also limited at that point and time. You can see here that we’ve been at 16-days total for over 15 percent and we are currently at 20.52 (percent). We have to hit seven consecutive days of being below 15 percent to go back to the previous restrictions of 75 percent (capacity at restaurants). Hopefully, as we get through this pandemic and we start to get the vaccines administered -- obsviously these numbers will improve, but people in the meantime need to do their part by socially distancing and wearing their masks,” said Parker. Residents are encouraged to stay home if they feel sick, and if you do go out, wear a mask, practice social distancing when you can, and wash your hands frequently.

Seguin boys’ rally falls short in loss to Alamo Heights, Friday game vs. Veterans Memorial to air on KWED (Seguin) - The District 26-5A win column remains elusive for the Seguin boys basketball team after a 67-59 loss to Alamo Heights on Tuesday at Goldie Harris Gym. The Matadors fell behind by as many as 20 points in the second quarter and trailed 36-19 at halftime. Seguin came storming back in the third quarter with an 18-4 run, including 11 straight points to cap it, and the deficit was only three, 40-37, late in period. The Mules responded with a 14-0 surge of their own to push the margin back to 17 early in the fourth quarter, and the Matadors came no closer than eight points the rest of the way. Seguin head coach Guy Nowlin says the third quarter run can be a positive to build on if his young team can learn to play that efficiently for the full 32 minutes. “I always tell these guys, we might be the best defensive team in the district and the stats might not show that right now, but that’s because we’re not doing it for four quarters full,” Nowlin said. “Adjustments were made at halftime, and these guys came out and played their tails off, gave us a chance, got us back in the game. I couldn’t be more proud of their defensive effort in the second half. I just wish it would have started earlier in the first half.” Sophomore guard Devin Mathews led all scorers with 17 points. He scored 15 on five threes in the second half. Michael Cornelius added 11 points, and Nick Matallanes finished with 10. Jacob Andrade contributed seven points, Kaleb McCann six, Johathan Jackson five, and Xander Harrell three. The Matadors drained a season-high 10 three pointers as a team. Nowlin says they were due after a recent offensive dry spell. “We’ve been in a slump here these last couple of games shooting percentage-wise,” the coach said. “So it was good to see shots go in for them, for their confidence. Going back to Saturday (at Dripping Springs) and today’s game, we executed well offensively, we’re getting looks. It’s just a matter of getting the ball to do down for us now, and we were able to do that in the second half especially.” The loss drops Seguin to 0-5 in district play, 2-10 overall. The Matadors host San Antonio-Veterans Memorial in a district game on Friday at 6:45 p.m. The Patriots, coached by Steven Perez, come in with a 2-4 district record and a 7-5 overall mark after defeating Kyle-Lehman 85-66 on Tuesday. Senior guard Jalen Bonds leads Veterans Memorial with 17.1 points per game, and forward Eric Green averages 11 points and a team-high 6.5 rebounds. Nowlin sees Friday as an opportunity to turn the district season around if the Matadors can avoid a big deficit early against a Patriots team that averages 71 points per outing. “These guys are great kids,” Nowlin said. “They keep working their tails off, they’re getting better and better, our chemistry’s improving, and with all of those things, hopefull we can get off to a faster start.” Friday’s Seguin - Veterans Memorial game will air live on KWED 1580-AM and Seguintoday.com. Pre-game coverage from Goldie Harris Gym starts at 6:30 p.m.

coffee thermos in hand, an activity he continued right up until the day of his stroke.
Donald Wayne Reneau, age 80, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away on December 21, 2020, with his wife and children by his side.
Most important to Don was his family, who loved and admired his wit, patience, and kindness. He possessed a wry sense of humor and could instantly deliver funny comments with a twinkle in his eye.
He was born on December 18, 1940 in Guadalupe County, Texas, to Elmer Moore Reneau and Lucille Phillips Reneau.
Papa Don’s grandkids, ages 7 to 25, appreciated his generosity with time. Whether participating in school sessions, supporting the Down Syndrome Association of South Texas, attending sporting events, or teaching them to feed the deer who inhabited their backyard, his grandkids knew Don as a truly good man who always put others before himself.
Don grew up on farms south of Seguin, where he developed a strong work ethic and attended 2 and 3-room schools. After graduating from La Vernia High School at age 17, he moved to San Antonio to attend bookkeeping school. Later while working as a shipping clerk and serving in the U.S. Army Reserves, Donald enrolled in night classes at San Antonio College. On a rare evening out, he met the love of his life, Carolyn, on the dance floor of Gruene Hall. They married, bought a house, and had two children. Donald ultimately graduated from St. Mary’s University with a degree in accounting at age 27, eight years after starting night school. Don worked in public accounting, serving as Comptroller for real estate developer Quincy Lee and then as President and part owner of RC Management, Inc., A position he held until retiring at age 79. He was active in several trade associations, serving twice as President of the San Antonio Apartment Association, as an officer of the Texas Apartment Association, a board member of the National Apartment Association, and President of the Institute for Real Estate Management. Don was a lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan, enjoyed Spurs games, and found himself a sudden fan of Texas A&M when his kids became Aggies. He loved shopping at Sam’s Club, was annoyingly good at Trivial Pursuit, and thought Die Hard was the best action movie of all time. He jogged every morning until a fall from a ladder forced him to take up walking instead. Don was a staple in his neighborhood, known for rising each morning at 4am to walk seven miles with a large
