Food distribution event set for Thursday Sign up for food, sign up to volunteer for event at Coliseum By Darren Dunn
(Seguin) -- Food insecurity was a major issue in 2020, largely because there were so many people who lost jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The year 2021 is off to a similar start when it comes to the pandemic, but fortunately there is again help on the way for those who are hungry. The New Braunfels Food Bank has been teaming up with other local organizations, like the city of Seguin and Guadalupe Regional Medical Center (GRMC) to host what have been called Mega Food Distribution events. The first distribution day of 2021 is slated for this Thursday in the parking lot outside of the Seguin Coliseum. Elaine Bennett, CEO of the Guadalupe Regional Medical Foundation at GRMC, says they are again teaming up with the city and the food bank to host the event. “It does not matter your income or what situation you are in. It’s just whoever needs food at this time. It’s a Mega Food Distribution (event) and it’s at the Coliseum,” said Bennett. See FOOD, Page 3

BBB offers tips for sticking to your New Year’s goals
- Check with health professionals. The best thing to do when considering a supplement or other health product is to consult your doctor. They may be able to provide recommendations or guide you away from potentially harmful products. You can also use FDA resources to learn which products were recalled for using dangerous ingredients. - Don’t believe claims of “miracle” results. Companies advertising weight-loss products often promise extreme results to make quick sales. The CDC suggests one to two pounds lost per week is a healthy and attainable goal, so avoid products that advertise a large amount of weight loss within a short time frame. - Be cautious with free trial offers. Many health product retailers offer monthly subscriptions and free trial periods for first-time customers. If you are interested in a free trial, read the fine print. You may be automatically enrolled in a subscription and charged a monthly fee once the trial ends. Improve finances
(Seguin) -- After much anticipation, 2021 is here. While many used their time at home in 2020 to try new hobbies and bake plenty of sourdough bread, 2021 provides a time to reflect on what you hope to achieve this year. Exercising more, focusing on health and improving finances are among the most common resolutions each year and will likely be the top goals again in the coming year. Officials from the Better Business Bureau are offering tips to help you be more successful keeping your resolutions this year. They sugggest that you use these tips to accomplish your 2021 goals: Exercise more One of the best ways to keep up with your resolution to exercise more is choosing the right gym for your needs. Use these tips from your Better Business Bureau to find your perfect gym: - Determine goals and priorities. Ask yourself these questions as you begin your search: Can this gym help me with my specific fitness goals? Would I rather work out at a smaller,
local gym or one with multiple convenient locations? Would a variety of equipment and classes keep me motivated? - Take a tour. Touring the facility can give you a better idea of the equipment, trainers and classes available. Use this opportunity to learn additional information about the gym, such as busy times or how often showers and equipment are cleaned. Some gyms even offer virtual tours. - Understand the cost. Many gyms use the beginning of the year to promote introductory offers or free trial periods. Be sure to ask when these promotions end and what the regular cost will be moving forward. Get healthy In addition to exercising more, many people want to improve their health by quitting smoking or losing weight. Weight loss supplements and smoking cessation aids often promise quick and easy results, which can be tempting to consumers looking to help accomplish their goals. Before using any health-related products, remember these tips:
The new year is a great time to assess your finances and implement needed changes or improvements. Although improving your finances is often confusing and can be frustrating, there are professionals and services dedicated to helping you. Keep these tips in mind when searching for financial assistance: - Assess your finances. Review your finances to see which areas need improvement. Request a copy of your credit report through one of the three credit reporting agencies: TransUnion, Equifax or Experian. You can also use BBB. org to find reliable financial advisors to help you build your credit and manage your money. - Know the difference. Different financial services, such as credit counseling and credit repair, are available to consumers. The first step to improving your finances is to understand which of these services you need. For example, credit counseling offers a comprehensive solution that focuses on various resources to help you solve your financial issues. Credit repair companies, however, offer to remove inaccurate information from your credit file for a fee. Remember, you have the right to remove incorrect information yourself for free. (Austin) -- Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick is outlining the Texas Senate’s coronavirus rules for the start of the 2021 legislative session. Patrick says all senators will get a coronavirus test on January 12 when the session is supposed to begin.
There will be strict limits on who can be on the Senate floor with no plans for floor seating. The gallery will be limited to less than 100 guests and there are plans to enforce social distancing rules. Patrick did not say if masks would be required on opening day.
City, GRMC team up with NB Food Bank to host Mega Food Distribution Day
FOOD continued from Page 1 Bennett says they want to help as many people as they can. She says the easiest way for you to make that happen is to get signed up online. Those in need of food are encouraged to get signed up by noon on Wednesday. “To register, all you need to do is go to nbfoodbank.org, and it will show you on there a CV response, and you fill in the online information that they require. You do need to be registered online to make the process more effecient,” said Bennett. In order for the food bank to truly be a success, Bennett says they also need some help from the community. She says they are also now signing up volunteers who can help hand out the food on Thursday morning.
“We need, at least, 100 volunteers, but we have done it with (as few as) 70 (volunteers). We do not have the National Guard again this time, so it really is important for people to sign up to help us and volunteer to distribute the food. For people that say ‘I can’t lift anything,’ we definitely can use you in traffic control
and other areas where you do not have to lift. We just ask that you sign up to volunteer on the nbfoodbank.org website. If there are any issues with that, please just show up on that day to volunteer at the gazebo,” said Bennett.
If it seems like there have been more and more of these food distribution events, that’s because there have been. Bennett says people who never thought they would need help feeding their families are suddenly finding themselves in need of assistance. She says that’s why they’ve been working with the New Braunfels Food Bank to try to help support some of those unmet needs. “I would like to thank the New Braunfels Food Bank for allowing us to again have this food distrubition, as well as the city. With all of us working together, it does make it easier for our community to receive these food distributions. This will count for (the) number 10 (food bank distribution event) for our community. Five have been with the city and this will make it six. Two have been at Caterpillar. And two were also at GRMC, with community members who helped to put the others on.
This really is our tenth one. It equates to over a million pounds of food that has been donated to our community,” said Bennett. The food bank normally provides two weeks work of food. Bennett says sometimes they are able to provide up to three weeks, or a month’s worth of food -- if people have the freezer space available. She says she wants everyone who’s worried about having enough food to take a moment and get signed up right now. “This food distribution, like I said (earlier), is for anyone in need of food assistance. We understand that with the (COVID-19) restrictions back in place due to the surge -- it does effect many more people than we know of. And if that is you, please sign up, (and) please come by. We do want to help you,” said Bennett. Again, to sign up to receive food or to volunteer to help distribute the food, go to nbfoodbank. org. You can also call 830-327-6000. That minimum two week supply of food includes things like milk, meat, fruits, vegetables, and dry goods.

After graduating from La Vernia High School at age 17, he moved to San Antonio to attend bookkeeping school. Later while working as a shipping clerk and serving in the U.S. Army Reserves, Donald enrolled in night classes at San Antonio College.
