AJB students get sneak peak at campus upgrades Cindy Aguirre-Herrera & Darren Dunn
(Seguin) -- Students at AJ Briesemeister (AJB) Middle School were greeted with an extra gift following their return from winter break last week. On Thursday, the students were surprised with new amenities, including the school’s new entrance doors and lobby space. The newly completed spaces include the administrative and counseling office, the nurse’s office, the school library and an eighth grade wing. Work continues on the voter approved renovation and construction of the local campus. An open house is slated for sometime in February. A formal announce will be made by the district once that open house date is selected. The total renovation of the AJB campus was approved by voters during a bond election held in 2019. The project had an estimated price tag of $ 39 million and it included a complete renovation of the campus at its current site at 1616 W. Court St.

Completely “Dry January” may NOT be your BEST approach to quit drinking (San Antonio) -- Quitting alcohol is a popular New Year’s Resolution. It’s called Dry January, but experts say there can be a dark side for many people. Dr. Kim Fromme, at the University of Texas Health Center in San Antonio, says going cold turkey may not be a realistic goal. She says that could make it harder for you to work towards your goal if there is a setback. “There’s a phenomenon known as the Abstinence Violation Effect (AVE), this idea that if you have one slip, then you give up completely,” said Fromme. Dr. Fromme says that often leads back to a heavy drinking pattern. It’s the reason she recommends moderation as a goal. “You could break your promise to yourself to abstain and then feel bad about yourself,” said Dr. Fromme. “And
that’s why an alternative to consider is, you know, moderation. (Have a) drier January, versus abstinence.” Instead of a “Dry January,” drinkers should shoot for a “Drier January.” That, she says, leads to longer term health benefits. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Achololism offers tips that can help you to have a more successful Dry January. The tips from the federal program include: - Identify why you choose to drink alcohol—for example, is it to have fun, to deal with stress and anxiety, or to fall asleep? Think about ways you could accomplish those objectives without alcohol, such as doing yoga, taking a walk, meeting friends for a hike, or playing games instead of drinking at a party. - Let friends and family know about your plan to participate in Dry January. Consider asking them
to join you and support each other throughout the month. Make sure alternative nonalcohol-containing beverages are available at parties and gatherings. - Have a polite, assertive “no, thanks” ready for when you are offered a drink. - As the month progresses, pay attention to how you feel. Are you sleeping better? Do you have more energy? When you notice benefits, make note of them. It will help you keep your momentum going. - Have a plan in place for when the month ends. As is the case with dieting, without a long-term plan it’s easy to resume old patterns. They say you should remember that if you feel better when you are not drinking, or when you decrease your drinking, then your body is telling you something, and that you should listen to your body.

(Seguin) -- Happy New Year Seguin! The Seguin Main Street Program has a lot to look forward to in 2024 after an eventful and successful 2023. Here are some of the projects and events that Seguin Main Street is looking forward to in downtown Seguin in 2024. In January, the City of Seguin will close on the purchase of the Wells Fargo building and will start the community input process to create a development plan of the property. The development plan will lead the City in selecting a developer to make the community vision a reality. The process will take a little over a year for the City to create the development plan and solicit proposals from developers who will ultimately purchase the building from the City. Be on the
lookout for more information on public meetings where you will be invited to share your input on the development of the site. Another project Seguin Main Street will be working on in early 2024 is the creation of a downtown tax increment reinvestment zone. This zone will be used to invest in downtown infrastructure, property improvements, and more that will continue the revitalization of the downtown area. The zone’s funding comes from the increased property values as the district’s revitalization grows. Several businesses have announced plans to open in downtown over the next year, including a new café on North River Street, a bar on Court Street, and a distillery on North Camp Street. These businesses will add
to the character of downtown and address some of the most requested businesses to the downtown district. Finally, Main Street is looking forward to beginning the construction of public restrooms downtown. With the completion of the downtown master plan, a location for the restrooms was a large discussion item. The plan recommends that they be located in Central Park. Council has approved funding and now Main Street and the City of Seguin are beginning to work on the design. There will be much more to celebrate in 2024 as the year progresses. We hope the community will continue to come out and support our small, independent businesses throughout all of 2024.

Christian “Chris” Krippner Jr. passed peacefully into the arms of his Savior and eternal rest on December 30, 2023. He met the challenges of his declining health over several years with resilience, dignity, and unwavering faith. Chris was born on August 14, 1947 in Owatonna, Minnesota to Evelyn (Zak) and Christian Henry Krippner Sr. He graduated from Marian High School, Owatonna in 1965 and the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis in 1969 with a Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree. He worked for ALCOA as an engineer in their construction department. Chris worked in the design and development of bauxite processing facilities in Kingston, Jamaica and then Conakry in the Republic of Guinea, Africa. His next assignment was in Swansea, Wales where he and Pam met and were married on October 27, 1975. Chris embraced being a Daddy when Alyson was born in Wales, and in 1978 the family relocated to Davenport, Iowa, where Sarah and Rachel were born. In 1983, Chris changed from the aluminum to the steel industry and with Pam, and their three young daughters moved from Iowa to Seguin, where they put down roots. He worked at SMI, later CMC, from 1983 until his retirement in 2017 and was involved in many expansion projects in Magnolia, Arkansas and Seguin. He thought of himself as Texan by choice, and loved watching Longhorn football. Chris was devoted to his “girls.” He always took such great care of Pam, Alyson, Sarah and Rachel; he was the anchor of the family – their rock. As the years passed, he enjoyed the company of his sons-in-law and was a very loving and proud Pops to his grandchildren. We will all miss his beautiful blue eyes, and wide smile. Outside of family and work, Chris was an avid tennis player and fan, always and wherever he lived; he encouraged and coached his daughters, traveled with them to tournaments, enjoyed playing with his Seguin friends, and attended tennis championships at Wimbledon and the US

Open. Travels back to Wales, an Alaskan cruise, a Canadian vacation, and many closer trips within the USA were always a delight. He was a faithful longtime Rotarian and a Paul Harris Fellow until his declining health impacted attendance. He was a member of Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church and served on the vestry in recent years. Chris’s life always reflected his love, his kindness, his goodness, and his compassion for others. Chris was preceded in death by his parents, Christian and Evelyn Krippner, and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Hedley “Jack” and Ivy Smith. Survivors include his loving wife of 48 years, Pamela Krippner; his devoted children, Drs. Alyson Ryan and husband Robert, Sarah Whitley and husband Zac, Rachel Swerdlow and husband Matthew; grandchildren, Kate Ryan, Madison Kirchner, Jackson Kirchner, Thomas Whitley, David Whitley, Evelyn Swerdlow and Reese Swerdlow; his siblings, Anna (Bob) Mills, Allen Krippner, Linda Krippner, and Doug (Lisa) Krippner; his sister-in-law, Gillian ( John) Abraham; numerous nephews, nieces, and dear friends. Special thanks to Ingrid Moreno, who patiently cared for and loved Chris during his illnesses. Thanks also to the doctors, nurses, therapists, chaplains and Hospice staff at GRMC, Seguin, to his Saint Andrews Episcopal Church family, and to the nursing staff at The Blake in New Braunfels. Team Chris was formidable in its support, supplying hope, dignity, comfort and love. A memorial service celebrating Chris life will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church with the Reverend Stephen Shortess officiating. A reception will follow in McKeough Hall. Private interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 201 E. Masking Policies Return To City Hospitals (New York, NY) -- It’s time to mask up again at New York City-run hospitals. The move to reinstate masks at NYC Health and Hospitals comes after a rise in COVID, RSV and flu cases, which have been on the increase since Thanksgiving. According to recent numbers, hospitalizations from November compared to around the Christmas holiday had gone up by around 36-percent. Health professionals also say if you’re in enclosed spaces to wear a mask and an N95 mask is best, if you have one. Fitness Apps For 2024 (Undated) -- Fitness is reported to be the rage for New Years resolutions so here’s some tech to help. According to Techradar there are three apps for those who want to give running a try. The first is called “Strava”, which has been available for years, and has reportedly been consistently improving and adding new features. The next is aptly called” Runna”, with not as many features, it’s geared for runners who want to up their game and keep their stats and measurements in the forefront. The cost depends on which premium tier you choose. And then there’s “Couch to 5k” which is reported to be ideal for beginners, if the name didn’t already give that away. USDA: $1B to be Spent to Create Green Spaces in Urban Areas, Increase Access (Undated) -- There is a big move from the federal government to provide trees and forested areas to communities that don’t have many greenspaces as a way of saving lives. Brenda Mallory, Chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, says everyone should have access to parks and natural environments. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says the USDA Forest Service will spend $1 billion dollars in federal funds for 385 project to plant trees and increase access to green spaces for millions of Americans living in urban areas. He says a tree canopy can reduce temperatures as much as 19 degrees, lower energy costs, improve mood, and soak up pollutants in the air providing health benefits and relief to the climate crisis. CA Deals With Holiday Surge In COVID Hospitalizations, Deaths (Sacramento, CA) -- The COVID crisis is far from over in California. In fact, the CDC warns the worst is yet to come. The state saw a surge in ER visits last month due to holiday gatherings, travel and a new variant spreading quickly. About 80-percent of hospital beds were full by Christmas and the number of lives lost jumped 31-percent. Some mask mandates have already been reinstated for health care workers and visitors, including in Los Angeles County.
